  • After the Nintendo 64 came out, Nintendo decided to fix every single hardware flaw they noted on their next console. Seemingly, the Mini-DVD disc format and controller were not on that list, which kept this great console from selling. In this video, I'll explain why the Gamecube was well designed and overall great, but was SEVERELY bogged down by the two flaws it had.

    The controller is possibly one of the most comfortable controllers ever made

    Only controller issue was the dpad was too small, c stick shouldve been bigger, and maybe another z button. Nintendos fear of piracy which led to mini discs also didnt help (spoiler, pirates will always figure a way around it)

    I love how you called it and immediately got the super nerds defending the controller. Look, I SUBJECTIVELY, love the Dreamcast controller. OBJECTIVELY it was a bad controller design for that generation. Nothing made after the Dualshock should ever have a single analog stick. Just terrible terrible idea. That's just a fact you can't get around. Forget it being an exclusive for Sony but hypothetically God of War could have looked and played better on a GameCube...... Except you can't put a game that big on the mini dvd... Poor choice.
    Both controller and format were definite downsides no matter what, even if with rose tinted glasses you like them.

    Agreed about the micro DVDs and controller being bad. Great console but just "Why?" on both fronts.

    Great contoller shape overall but yeah...that button layout was goofy. The mini disc was probably one of the dumbest moves in all of video game history.

    if nintendo had made gamecube able to play dvds or even cds there wouldn't be room left for all the FUN.

    I thought the controller was great until I unlocked the original Metroid on Metroid prime. I was excited to play it for the first time, then I realized the D-pad was one of the worst ever. Making the controller only good

    The wavebird was sick and the small disc was cool

      the small disc size is why developers abandoned the system

    • @Carsonj13
      @Carsonj13 4 дня назад

      @dancarthen3634 no it was due to their games not selling well on the platform. If they were that much of a problem the xbox 360 would have had limited third party support, instead devs bent over backwards to squeeze open world games onto DVD. Rockstar, square Enix, even sonic team are just a few devs I can think of where the lack of space on 360 was a hinderence.

    was any company at the time before GC's launch manufacturing DVDs that were slightly bigger to fit nintendo's anti-piracy criteria?
    would that even matter in the end if the GC launched without a proper mainline mario/zelda title? or a killer app like wii sports?

    People I know decided on the console of choice based on the controller.
    I recall a conversation with my friend when I bought a GameCube he said the controller is no good for every kind of game.
    I told him yeah but it'll be fine for Nintendo games.
    I think I only saw one 2D fighting game from Capcom .
    But otherwise the entire genre of 2D was missing from the console entirely.
    All of Snks output and all of Capcoms.
    Games like Metal Slug 3, Samurai Shodown, Street Fighter Anniversary, Street Fighter 3rd strike that made an appearance on the other two consoles but not GameCube.
    I am guessing down to the controller because even my friends said wow I don't want to play Capcom vs Snk 2 on the GameCube controller.
    Also as someone that had Soul Calibur 2 on all 3 consoles it came out on at the time.
    The GameCube was the only console I had to adjust my play style completely on as the button layout was kinda confusing if you had just come off playing the PS2 or Xbox.
    I understand completely why the N64 controller was designed the way it was it was the first controller designed for 3D analogue movement and that was its niche.
    But I really have no idea why they created that monstrosity.
    I mean it had some good things like avery accurate analogue stick and analogue triggers but the overall layout was terrible as evidenced by the fact the standard layout today is 4 face and 4 shoulder.
    There's one thing though games designed for the GameCube controller like Mario Sunshine don't play quite right on other controllers.
    Also people today still love to play Smash Bros on yhe GameCube controller.

    The Controller was the best of that Gen. It's design is still used to this day.

    The ONLY downside to the GC controller was that it wasn't built for shooters. In literally every other aspect it was PEAK controller design.

      And honestly, the only reason the GC "failed" was because Nintendo tried to stick to their "only kids play games" philosophy and because of just how goddamn insane the PS2 was. What really helped the PS2 along was the fact that it cost as much as the average DvD player at the time; so why the hell WOULDN'T you buy it? You get a DvD player, the kids get a video game console. It's a win/win. Xbox was only in the conversation because of Halo. No Halo = No Xbox.

      The button layout and the ergonomics were pretty lack luster and the C toggle was unnecessarily small for legit no reason

    I dont think discs were the problem... were that the case wouldn't the xbox 360 have sold poorly as well?

    • @Kurriochi
      @Kurriochi  3 дня назад +1

      The 360 was leading early on so it didn't matter as much, cause most games would be made for it first, then ported to PS3. Meanwhile most PS2 games would be ported to GameCube, and had to go down to around 1/3rd of their size, because the playstation had far more games and momentum.

    Gurrrl controller wasnt that terrible hahah, (the d-pad was), but yeah the mini dvd thing was very stupid, specially when nintendo was trying to make a more "adult" console and everyone wanted a dvd player....sigh....

    Gamecube didn't sell well because it came out during the edgy era at the time and it lacked edgy games for teens to look forward to,it was deemed lame because of that. i don't think any kid gave a fuck about disk size or the controller they just wanted dark and edgy/mature games.

    • @BeefLettuceAndPotato
      @BeefLettuceAndPotato 3 месяца назад +2

      Yeah.. and you can't fit a large edgy game like GTA San Andreas (4gb) on a 1.5gb mini dvd..

    • @zk0rned
      @zk0rned Месяц назад

      Yeah it's totally not because 7.9 GBs of storage was the new norm or anything it was those damn edgy teens and their dog!
