That yoseka origin ink is sooo gorgeous. I think 1 notebook & 1 pen for a month is pretty easy (I did it this month & I only begin fountain pen hobby pretty recent), but 1 ink is another story. I often feel sorry for other inks in my drawer for not choosing them to refill my pen (“gaaah they’re not at the same level”). But I made it to not emptying my ink converter before it runs out of ink, woohoo!
To quote someone else, and in a completely different context, you make me want to be a better person -- more focused, more attentive, more awake and aware. After retirement and not having to exercise my brain over things I didn't really care about very much, I have gotten mentally lazy (and physically lazy too). Totally agreed about habits. About 2 years ago I decided I wanted to use my sketchbooks more, so joined in challenges like Inktober - have finished that twice - and made my own and also took part in Inktober 52 for the rest of the year (and I agree - making your own challenges is part of the fun, and adapting it to you will help you stick with it). They say stick to something once a day for 30 days and it stays with you...and that's pretty true. The lockdown knocked a lot of that off-kilter but I do find if I stop for long I need to go draw something now, I feel rather lost. So the habit stayed. I've filled nearly 3 large A4 sketchbooks and 1 A5 one and many A5 watercolour/sketchbooks on the go (another rule: I can't buy other sketchbooks of the same type/size until I nearly finish one, otherwise I just buy loads and fill a bit of each one and then never complete it!) And yes I carry pens in my pockets, my bag, and have travel sketchbooks and carry ink samples and little tins of watercolour, so I can just grab a small sketchbook if I don't want to take the whole lot. That helps. It's a shame I don't work at A6/pocket friendly sizes, otherwise I could carry a small sketchbook all the time. That's the only big barrier to entry left. I don't do one pen one ink, but practically I do use pretty much one ink because of my watercolour work (Sketchink or rarely Hero 234, always black bar my parallel pens) but have many pens for different lines and styles- vintage flex with different sizes, static smooth nibs, fude nibs, pocket pens, refillable rollerballs, etc. Sometimes I need a flex nib for variation of lines, sometimes I need to draw quickly and more linear.
This is so good to hear--it sounds like you structured your habits and environment to meet your needs. Right now I'm doing a 30 day cold bath everyday challenge and I'm telling you--THAT is NOT going to stick hahaha!
My variant of this-one pen and one ink for my planner each month-is still going very well since I started it in November. The choice is something I very much look forward to. Sometimes, it’s “this is new, I really want to use it!” and other times it is “I want something I know very well.” Thanks for introducing me to the concept of deep work. I will investigate that further!
We do One Book July every year and that is one book, one pen for the month of July. I love that concept to help rein in your purchases of papers, notebooks, pens and inks. Of course we say there are no rules but the ones you create and I get to test a differnt size notebook. It was a lot of fun and you learn things about yourself. I watch your videos, and unlike many of the other videos I watch, I have to process things well after they end. Many of the other videos I watch tend to be absorbed (and forgotten) within short order and that's fine. But not with your's and I love it. There is a lot to process because there is a lot to process. LOL I got what you were trying to convey, but it's the manner in which you convey the material that really stands out for me. Your experience has not just been shared, but I feel like it's been lived! I feel like I was part f it, and for that ... I thank you. I could never be satisfied with a similar challenge ... even modified. If you only saw my living and work space, you'd understand why (my workshop is at home). I am surrounded by pens and ink ... not so much that I write that often, but I love pens for the instruments they are, I often restore pens, so it's no unusual as I finish a customer's watch (I'm a watchmaker),I'll immediately grab a pen that needs worked on and minutes, or hours later, I have a functional pen that I can now test and use. It is often on display at my workbench to admire and to write customer correspondence ... until the next pen restoration (or purchase) arrives. Inks???? well, that's another story. The walls of my work area are lined with shelves full of inks. I'm currently on an Omas kick, so acquiring 5+ yo inks has been an adventure. So for me to pick just one ... just one of anything would be futile given that my daily line of sight would be a constant temptation and my main hobby would be set aside. I don't think any of it would be enjoyable. So, I think I'll have to pass. Now, maybe I could take on the "Restore 30 pens in 30 days" challenge. LOL EDIT: Oh ... and then there's the paper. Did I mention in a previous life I was a graphic artist? Paper, paper, paper, I have so much paper about that it would be impossible for me to be aware that I've made a mistake and wrote in/on something I shouldn't have. LOL My Lord, I have papers everywhere!!!! First world problems ,,, 'Grateful I am' said Master Yoda!
That's why you should watch my videos--so you don't have to do it hahaha! There IS something very satisfying by being surrounded by all the things you love and being able to just pluck something up and mess with it. If those things give you joy, why try to fix something that is not broke? I had just got to a weird headspace and I think it's partially that I keep so many things because of this channel. A lot of them have become props and getting the next new thing became too important. Thank you--I'm glad you get something out of my vids.

I now just remembered that I brought with me to Romania in 2019 just the Kaweco Sports Skyline in Beige with the Broad nib and a pack of 12 short midnight blue catridges for 3 weeks and I only had my Hobonichi Mega weeks. It can be done and one just have to be ok with that!! It was great journaling our adventure there! Again, in November I had to make a trip to Malaysia unexpectedly and I automatically grabbed the same pen and catridges with my mega weeks and it was for 2 months this time around!! I did miss my other pens and inks. After I came home, I blissfully surrounded myself with my pens and inks👍
That is awesome! One of the nice things about limiting yourself when you travel is that there is less to keep track of and worry about. It's a nice break from your normal routine of multiple inks and pens!

Interesting how the journey was different for all of us, and the conclusions were similar, I really enjoyed doing the challenge and enjoyed it. Like you said our pens are "happiness sticks", having different nibs and giving us an opportunity to write in different styles.

This would be so hard to do. I suppose I would easily be able to do 1 pen/1 ink, but the 1 notebook would get me - different tools for different purposes. I did enjoy the idea of your one viewer using a vintage pen for the challenge - I feel like my Parker 51 would make a great go-to.
I do agree, different tools for different purposes and that's why the notebook was a bit of a pain. But now I'm looking at all the notebooks I use and wonder if I should slim that down!

Happy Sticks...happy tools. I so relate. I'm a disciplined person so not much of a challenge for me. What I would end up doing is walking away from using fountain pens and find a new way to write. Ooh what a timely video! I'm gearing up for my own challenge: one pen, one ink for July. I picked a vintage Swan and I'm looking forward to getting to know it very very well. I'll be allowing myself to use other inks with dip pens and brushes, because I use those for sketching. I could never do one notebook though! My hobonichi is too precious. The stuff you saw was things I had ordered before I did my 30 days (I almost always have something coming in the mail). One pen I had ordered a year ago! It strangely turned up right as I started my 30 days--can you believe it?! hahaha!
I am going to try to do this 30 Days One Pen One Ink challenge after I clean up my current 11 inked pens. Normally, I don't like to have more than 3 at any given time. Mostly because I am afraid they might dry up. And cleaning them always stresses me out as I constantly think I have not done a good enough job and am leaving some ink to build up in there with every use. I can't wait to be able to focus on just one pen and one ink. Thank you so much for this update!

What a fun and interesting video! Thank you. I admire your self-control... I tried my own version of the 30 day tests which involved using only the pens I had currently inked up, but did not realise that most of them were almost empty. So, after about two weeks, having used up or drained about 10 pens, my resolution cracked and I went and cleaned and then filled up half a dozen gorgeous Pelikan M800, Sailor 1911 Large and one Twsbi Eco with a 1.1 stub. It felt wonderful. Maybe next time, I will organise myself properly and decide on 5 or so fountain pens, fully filled with my favourite colours and see if I can be disciplined enough to use only these 5 pens... The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak, however.
Thank you! I don't know that you even need to do a 30 day challenge. If you are happy using your pens, then I really see no purpose in it. Maybe you could even do a "as soon as a pen is empty, I need to fill it or clean it out by the end of the day" kind of thing for 30 days as it seems like you really enjoyed freshly inked pens! I always have way too many pens inked up and half of them dried out. I've learned to live with it hahaha!
@@InkyRocks I think your suggestion of always cleaning a pen when it becomes empty is excellent. I must try that. Yesterday I had to clean a pen that had a residue of ink for about 10-15 minutes, before I could fill it up again- and only because there was ancient and deeply dried up ink somewhere in it... : )
I love the lessons you took away from this, Alesa, and I admire that you stuck to your guns the way you did. I probably would have used a sticky note for my grocery list without feeling like I'd cheated. You're a woman of principles! I watched this video, thinking, "wow, I could never do that." Then I remembered that I already did. It was out of necessity though. Two years ago, I bikepacked through Georgia (the country, not the state) for a month. Every night, I sat in my tent and wrote about my day in a pocket notebook with --in hindsight-- really crappy paper. I used an old Pelikan Pelikano because a) it had a fine nib, allowing me to write really small, b) I wouldn't be devastated if I lost it, and c) because it used ink cartridges. I didn't run out of ink but I did almost run out of paper, forcing me to write smaller and smaller every day. Not a lot of stationery stores up in the Caucasus mountains, lemme tell ya. Luckily I didn't have to write any grocery lists or letters ;) I did almost lose the notebook while trying to cross a river up in the mountains. It was in a little shoulder bag that I used to carry my essentials, my wallet and ID. Losing them would have been a pain but not nearly as frustrating as losing the notebook, as I needed it to write my blog when I got back home. Good times.

@@darkchocolate4643 It looks like you are a real adventurer (is that a word?) I think you have some really interesting stories to tell (your English is excellent and the F bombs don't detract). I think the best way to encourage more readers is to break down your adventures into bite size pieces around a theme within your travels. Kind of like Bill Bryson. On his trips, he singles out one thing ( i.e. weird roadside stops on American highways) and brings you along into his world. Then feed these bits out on your blog in intervals (like once a week or something.) Seeing a huge block of text that takes an hour and a half long to read doesn't allow your reader to sample you first, and then continue with other posts. You are asking them to basically commit to a book. But if you want to keep it as one long post, you may try having sub-titles, dividing by day, or area, or adventure. I love hearing from women who go out and have interesting and unusual experiences. It would be wonderful if you could reach more people. I have never biked in the Caucasus mountains and probably never will, but it sounds so exciting and I think you have a real story to tell. I am in the process of following you but I'm having some problem with Medium.
@@InkyRocks Thank you, Alesa, for the encouraging words! I realize that the posts are very long. That's partly due to the fact that it initially started out as a mere travelogue for a handful of friends abroad who wanted a full report on my trip. They told me they really enjoyed it and it kind of snowballed from there. I put the story up on Medium without giving it too much thought, especially when it came to layout. I suppose I assumed that if people found the story interesting enough, they'd continue reading. I had no expectations.
I will definitely consider cutting it up into smaller pieces. Perhaps I could end every part with a bit of a cliffhanger or I could at least allude to the next adventure to keep it interesting. You've certainly given me food for thought, which is much appreciated!

Thanks for the thorough feedback of your challenge. It was great to hear the results. I am currently trying to go back to basics also, making the most of my pens, inks and paper to create every day and not waste time. I agree, limiting time on devices is far more productive.
I did the same pen and ink for most of my second semester of school with my Diamond 580ALR Prussian Blue and DIamine Aurora Borealis due to only having two pens at the time, I now picked up a bronze Al-Star with Diamine Honey Burst. This is why I use a binder notebook or discbound notebook. I can use the same notebook but different pages and I can move the pages around if I need to.
You are so right. One of the reasons I migrated to journals many years ago was because all the binders were plain plastic. Now they make so many beautiful binders, it's a good reason to return. I have, to some extent, with my Plotter binder, but it may be too thin.
My friend and I are doing writing challenges this month and at the start of it I thought I'd kick it off by using one pen and one ink (I have multiple projects going so one notebook wasn't going to work.) I chose an ink that worked well with all kinds of paper that I like to use, Sailor Tokiwa Matsu. And I chose my Benu Skulls and Roses in Gamma Green because it's a momento mori but in the green meant to symbolize new beginnings and acceptance... and I know those are some seriously unusual choices. Most people would not be like "Yeah I'm gonna write for as long as I feel like it with the green ink in the stabby pen" but I'm going through some stuff and wanted to address that in a contemplative way. I admit that I only made it about ten days before a different pen said it missed me and wanted to work on what I was doing, and this was for myself and not a million dollars or something, so I accepted that, and used the pen that was calling to me. (A blue Aurora Talentum containing Diamine Seize the Night.) And if I got anything out of my abbreviated challenge, it's that these are my friends, and they all have their strengths. And it's best to spend quality time with each of them to really appreciate them, before getting distracted by something else that is shiny. So yes, happy sticks. (Still doing the writing challenge though. I've done about 18k words in cursive today. Getting through some writers block.)
Wow! That’s a lot of words-glad you’re working your way out of the block! It’s interesting that we all get something different from this exercise (or some form of it.). Lately I’ve been kind of burned out on he sheer number of inks coming out, I may see this challenge as more of a palate cleanser!
@@InkyRocks Ah! I mistyped, 1.8k words, which is still a lot of words for me these days, and I will take it. I know what you mean about the ink burnout. I want all of it, I love all of it, but I'm finding that a million wrong inks aren't as precious as three or four of the right ones.
Well done for sticking with it, and finding it helped you focus. I think for me the one notebook would be a rule too far, just because I like to keep my diary separate to all else but otherwise I’d likely cope. As to field notes for a fountain pen? hahaha! That is exactly what I wanted to do! That way you can see if it's something you would even want to bother with. I think there is no reason to do this for many people. And yes, the paper thing was a step too far.

Heaps of kudos for successfully completing your very own 30-day challenge. You threw down the gauntlet to the rest of us, which I gladly, if nervously accepted as a true test of will and perseverance. Only that I started on the 26th of May, and achieved this feat by finishing yesterday. Made it a 31- day affair, if that doesn’t disqualify me for violating the stipulated rules. Lol Anyway, I decided to pick my favorite fountain pen of all time - the Aurora 88. I have eight of them. Had trouble deciding which one to pick. I finally went for the Satin Black w/Rose Gold, with the uniquely wonderful Goccia nib. I also chose one of my firm favorites in inks; Montegrappa Bordeaux (sadly, no longer in production). And I was very afraid I’d run out of my precious stock (I luckily averted that with some to spare). Also, I wrote with my pen for 27/31 days. For paper, I went with my B5 Apica C.D. 80 gsm Notebook. I had two new pen deliveries arrive during this 30-day adventure. I abided by the rules, and only opened the packages early this morning. I reckon I became more convinced than ever that I have an excessive amount and variety of ink. I had realized this last year. But this 30-day regime left me in no doubt that I need to offload several of my inks (especially some of the blues). And that I should have NEVER bought so many inks. I could happily live with just a dozen different inks, instead of the more than fifty I currently own. Next, I realize acutely how I’ve made a common ‘mistake’ of sometimes buying the same pen in different colors/finishes that has needlessly swelled my collection and made me spend somewhat whimsically and imprudently on expensive pens of which I could easily have done with only one. This realization hit home hard while writing solely with my wonderful Aurora 88 through the whole month. Not that I suddenly regret buying all my 88s. Only that I could have possibly been just as content buying only one. On the contrary, I’m more convinced than ever before that having the option, liberty and pleasure of using many different nib sizes and specialty grinds is very important to me. So, that made this 30-day challenge very daunting and instructive to me. I couldn’t live with using just the Goccia nib, as fantastic as it really is. Ditto, paper, that sometimes overlooked but no less important and appealing third of the traditional triad of fine writing. I really do need to use more than one type of paper to fully enjoy my writing experience. There’s more that I could say but clearly forgetting at the moment. But I cannot end before conceding that the 30-day challenge revealed to me ever more starkly the myriad digital distractions keeping me from doing more deeper work daily. And how otherwise naturally wired I am for analog instruments and modes of work that I should happily adopt more of that into my life. I’ve always instinctively hated (and sucked at) multi-tasking anyway. I use social media quite selectively. And email just as sparingly. The unceasing joys of reading printed paper books and writing with my beloved fountain pens and prized inks almost daily is one among sundry other pastimes that make life worth living. I’m so glad to have taken up this challenge. It’s got to be one of the more interesting, enjoyable, if trying things I’ve done this year, so far. Many thanks for showing the way and sharing your own illuminating insights on the same.
Wow! It sounds like you wrung every drop of usefulness out of this exercise--congratulations! I had remembered you wrote that you might do this but had no way of contacting you on the Tube. I have the same problem with multiple colors of the 3776. I've decided that I am going to have to cull it some and also all the inks I have. There is certainly a level of mental burden re-incorporating all my stuff. Thanks for you feedback--I think you got more out of this than I did!

1. I would be leery of syringing a converter for fear of wearing out its opening with all the taking of it on and off. 2. I just acquired my grail, a Pilot 743 (FA). I haven't taken it out of the box yet. My intent is to use it every day, drawing in a small sketchbook, till I fill it, to get really familiar and skilled with it. Waiting till I finish my current drawing, which will be later today. I imagine this task could take 30 days, but don't really know.
Congratulations! That sounds like a great plan--filling the book instead of making it a time thing. I don't think it really matters how long it takes--it might be a better parameter.

While studying, I developed the habit to change the writing tool when I got stuck in solving a problem. The new tool symbolizes that I need to approach the problem from a new direction. I still use this technique today, writing several pages each day with at least three different fountain pens (3 out of about 20, all loaded with a few different inks) on my desk. So I will not take your very interesting but somewhat masochistic challenge.
Hahaha! It WAS masochistic! That is such a great idea. My problem is I have like 20 pens inked and that’s because I’m trying to cut down. If I don’t pay attention, I would have a lot more inked up and drying out all over the place. Perhaps I’m trying to go in “new directions” too often.

fyi the touch bar volume control is slideable, put your finger on it and slide left or right instead of the tapping, it is sometimes quicker than using headphone controls depending on your set.
Thank you! I've had a few people point that out but when I try it, you have to momentarily hold the volume button then slide. For me just clicking the volume button on my headset seems faster and easier. I'm probably just more used to that hahaha!
Very interesting project/challenge. I think I may attempt this as well. I have a new pen arriving in a day, so I will wait till that arrives before I start. Mine will probably be; Leuctturm1917 120g A5 notebook, DeAtramentis Document Black Ink, and N9 fountain pen.
It was something that I found to be useful. Your combo sounds good as that Document Black ink is a nice all around useful ink. Good luck--I hope you get some useful insights!
I only use a Hobonichi diary and I have a Custom 74 with a soft fine nib. I can definitely limit myself to a bottle of Iroshizuku Shin Kai, so I'll try this experiment during July! Thanks for the great video !
Well done, and good choice on the pen! And you can't go wrong with blue-black for an everyday all around ink, my go to choice is Noodlers Midnight blue, it's not bullet proof, but it doesn't want to wash off my hands either lol.

While you always make great videos, I have often wondered about the ‚using only x for n amount of time‘-challenges. I did that kind of challenge when I was a young girl at a boarding school where wearing the same clothes every weekday for almost a year came with the territory. In the decades after that I learned to celebrate abundance and still am exploring the border between abundance and clutter. The only ink restriction I ever put myself under was only using black ink for a year after my mother died. I don‘t think I ever used black ink since. If I want to find out anything about my habits I‘d much rather change only one variable. What I learned from this video is that I don‘t write enough, because it takes me weeks rather than hours to empty a small converter let alone something like a TWSBI.
I like your "exploring the border between abundance and clutter". It's all relative. I felt like I was getting too close to the "clutter" and the "I need to get the next new thing" side of life. I'm sorry about your mother. Using only black ink for a year was a wonderful gesture.

Interesting and insightful, thank you for sharing your thoughts. I don't write enough on a daily basis and use my fountain pens for letters only. I am a sucker for colorful inks and will sometimes write a letter with multiple colors so I probably won't be trying this but I enjoyed your point of view on it.

The intro reminds me of the story of the Korean monk who was gifted a fountain pen, he loved the pen and used it a lot. One day his friend got him another fountain pen. Soon he realised he wasn’t using the first one as much as he used to, so he gave away the second one to someone so that he would cherish the first one again. It’s a story I admire but always end up telling myself, I’m excused to be greedy as I’m no monk. 😂
Another great video! I think notebooks are fundamentally different than pens and ink because they're the *artifact* that's left when it's over. You could borrow a pen and ink for a challenge like this, but presumably you'd want to own/keep the paper. 😜 So if the structure or organization of the paper is important to you (e.g., this notebook for those purpose, that for another), giving that up would be more disruptive. Of course the same could be true for pens and inks, but probably less dramatically. I use certain pens with larger nibs mostly for titles and headers and labels, and I'd miss that with one pen (unless it has something cool like a cross point nib), but I'd survive. Now I'll try to get off my phone and do some deep work with my joy sticks. 😀🎉😀
In Dec 2020 I set a goal of no new pens in 2021, six months in and am good. Then in June, after stocking up on nibs, inks and paper I decided no pen related purchases for the remainder of 2021. I am enjoying the pens, inks, nibs and papers I own without chasing the next must have item. We will see what happens in 2022.
To tell you the truth, if I could get rid of most of my ink and about half my pens, I would enjoy my pen hobby more. But now doing RUclips videos, they have become props. I still may want to streamline. Good luck on your "no-buy" for the rest of the year. I think it will be enjoyable and to some extent "free-ing".

Yay for challenge! I liked the note about how it's all up to us when it comes to rules, I played with the thought of the challenge but I use different pens for different situations (thick nibs for hobonichi, EF nib and a zebra pen for work...) that it seemed difficult. But I can change those rules for myself after all, and maybe after I finish the challenge of reducing inked pens, I will get to it, I think. Messups will happen, but if mistakes are non-consequential I don't believe they need to be sweated over much... Interesting point about buttons thing but I have a thought about it - there is also a difference between sliding a thing on a screen vs physical act of touching a button. The second one will always feel faster and reaction will be more instinctive, no?
There may be some truth to that. The model before had a plain button for volume up and one for volume down--both physical buttons. It was so much easier to use, and yes, it seemed faster. This one is just silly, but I have to give it to them, they only have one mute button, so maybe I should use that more! I definitely thing people should construct their rules to get what they want out of the challenge. Just suffering seems pretty silly if you don't get anything out of it. I hear you about reducing the number of inked pens--I have not been able to successfully do that!
Congratulations on the challenge. I was going to do this when you first talked about it but got sidetracked and forgot about it. Well I think July is the month for me to try this. Maybe I'll sucker a few friends into it with me. My modifications would be to have 2 notebooks, one for work and one for personal. Also I am going to include 1 pencil.
I don't see myself doing this challenge anytime soon for various reasons, but I'd definitely pick my Pilot Kakuno Fine with Graf von Faber Castell Deep Sea Green or Pilot Iroshizuku Tsuyu-kusa (I wonder if those are considered "office friendly" if anyone wants to pitch their thoughts) and that way I'd actually use my con-70 (I have a shimmer ink in there right now in a cartridge and I suspect it would be a pain to clean despite the volume). :) I have a lot to say, but during the interim between your announcement and this release, I've gotten a new pen and summer really is a time when your ink usage drops unless you're super deliberate with drawing and writing. Maybe I'll need to focus in a handful of colors at a time in light of what I want to be prepared for come summer's end.
That's actually and interesting approach. Like over the summer, concentrate on a selection of colors, or a family of colors. See how that goes. Sometimes restricting your choices give you more creativity.

I always adored them and I look forward to the day I can afford to get one but the mark up in the US makes that undoable for me unfortunately. This was so interesting!! I like the idea of carrying a pen and notebook everywhere. It helps that’s it was the same notebook, I sometimes forget where I write things down. :) This video more than any other has increased my admiration for you! I spent an hour today working on the train, with my pen and notebook and it was so satisfying. When I’m in the computer I definitely get distracted very easily.

I tried this challenge too, and I am ashamed to say I failed after a week. After that point I cracked 😩 I used a pelikan m600 with a fine nib, diamine ancient copper since its one of my favorite inks and a leuchtturm 1917 notebook. I tried 😩

I ordered it from India I think. If you are asking where to go for shopping check out Itoya (I believe there is one in Yokohama) and then in Tokyo: Itoya, Kingdom Note, Loft and Tokyu Hands (and just about any major department store's stationery floor).
It’s a cool idea, but I could never do one pen for 30 days. I’m 72 with arthritis in my wrists. I write 4 or 5 letters almost every day. I change pens, and most times paper, with every letter. I can’t be positive, but it seems to me that the variation of pen size, nibs, and paper lessons my hand discomfort. I can write for 3 hours comfortably, most days. 😁
I think you are on to something. You are not constricting your hand in the same position for long periods of time when you change pens and I think you are right about the paper too. I think those subtle changes in grip and pressure can make a big difference. Congrats on your letter writing--that is a LOT of letters!
It is the Toos "Ribbon" and currently has a waiting list here in Japan of about 4 months. I think Shigure inks carried a couple but sold out right away. A couple of other glass makers are starting to do more "italic" nib type glass pens but they are still rare. I may do another glass pen video as the popularity seems to be growing more than I had imagined!
😊I hear you. That was definitely one of my worries making this video. When I told my husband that people had a hard time not buying anything for a month, he was truly puzzled. "Why would you need more than one pen, ink and journal?" is what he thinks. It feels frivolous.

That yoseka origin ink is sooo gorgeous. I think 1 notebook & 1 pen for a month is pretty easy (I did it this month & I only begin fountain pen hobby pretty recent), but 1 ink is another story. I often feel sorry for other inks in my drawer for not choosing them to refill my pen (“gaaah they’re not at the same level”). But I made it to not emptying my ink converter before it runs out of ink, woohoo!
To quote someone else, and in a completely different context, you make me want to be a better person -- more focused, more attentive, more awake and aware. After retirement and not having to exercise my brain over things I didn't really care about very much, I have gotten mentally lazy (and physically lazy too). Your narration and comments in this video may help me to rise up and be again. Thank you.

Totally agreed about habits. About 2 years ago I decided I wanted to use my sketchbooks more, so joined in challenges like Inktober - have finished that twice - and made my own and also took part in Inktober 52 for the rest of the year (and I agree - making your own challenges is part of the fun, and adapting it to you will help you stick with it).
They say stick to something once a day for 30 days and it stays with you...and that's pretty true. The lockdown knocked a lot of that off-kilter but I do find if I stop for long I need to go draw something now, I feel rather lost. So the habit stayed. I've filled nearly 3 large A4 sketchbooks and 1 A5 one and many A5 watercolour/sketchbooks on the go (another rule: I can't buy other sketchbooks of the same type/size until I nearly finish one, otherwise I just buy loads and fill a bit of each one and then never complete it!)
And yes I carry pens in my pockets, my bag, and have travel sketchbooks and carry ink samples and little tins of watercolour, so I can just grab a small sketchbook if I don't want to take the whole lot. That helps. It's a shame I don't work at A6/pocket friendly sizes, otherwise I could carry a small sketchbook all the time. That's the only big barrier to entry left.
I don't do one pen one ink, but practically I do use pretty much one ink because of my watercolour work (Sketchink or rarely Hero 234, always black bar my parallel pens) but have many pens for different lines and styles- vintage flex with different sizes, static smooth nibs, fude nibs, pocket pens, refillable rollerballs, etc. Sometimes I need a flex nib for variation of lines, sometimes I need to draw quickly and more linear.
This is so good to hear--it sounds like you structured your habits and environment to meet your needs. Right now I'm doing a 30 day cold bath everyday challenge and I'm telling you--THAT is NOT going to stick hahaha!

We do One Book July every year and that is one book, one pen for the month of July. I love that concept to help rein in your purchases of papers, notebooks, pens and inks. Of course we say there are no rules but the ones you create and I get to test a differnt size notebook. It was a lot of fun and you learn things about yourself. I watch your videos, and unlike many of the other videos I watch, I have to process things well after they end. Many of the other videos I watch tend to be absorbed (and forgotten) within short order and that's fine. But not with your's and I love it. There is a lot to process because there is a lot to process. LOL I got what you were trying to convey, but it's the manner in which you convey the material that really stands out for me. Your experience has not just been shared, but I feel like it's been lived! I feel like I was part f it, and for that ... I thank you. I could never be satisfied with a similar challenge ... even modified. If you only saw my living and work space, you'd understand why (my workshop is at home). I am surrounded by pens and ink ... not so much that I write that often, but I love pens for the instruments they are, I often restore pens, so it's no unusual as I finish a customer's watch (I'm a watchmaker),I'll immediately grab a pen that needs worked on and minutes, or hours later, I have a functional pen that I can now test and use. It is often on display at my workbench to admire and to write customer correspondence ... until the next pen restoration (or purchase) arrives. Inks???? well, that's another story. The walls of my work area are lined with shelves full of inks. I'm currently on an Omas kick, so acquiring 5+ yo inks has been an adventure. So for me to pick just one ... just one of anything would be futile given that my daily line of sight would be a constant temptation and my main hobby would be set aside. I don't think any of it would be enjoyable. So, I think I'll have to pass. Now, maybe I could take on the "Restore 30 pens in 30 days" challenge. LOL EDIT: Oh ... and then there's the paper. Did I mention in a previous life I was a graphic artist? Paper, paper, paper, I have so much paper about that it would be impossible for me to be aware that I've made a mistake and wrote in/on something I shouldn't have. LOL My Lord, I have papers everywhere!!!! First world problems ,,, 'Grateful I am' said Master Yoda!
That's why you should watch my videos--so you don't have to do it hahaha! There IS something very satisfying by being surrounded by all the things you love and being able to just pluck something up and mess with it. If those things give you joy, why try to fix something that is not broke? I had just got to a weird headspace and I think it's partially that I keep so many things because of this channel. I now just remembered that I brought with me to Romania in 2019 just the Kaweco Sports Skyline in Beige with the Broad nib and a pack of 12 short midnight blue catridges for 3 weeks and I only had my Hobonichi Mega weeks. It can be done and one just have to be ok with that!! It was great journaling our adventure there! Again, in November I had to make a trip to Malaysia unexpectedly and I automatically grabbed the same pen and catridges with my mega weeks and it was for 2 months this time around!! I did miss my other pens and inks. After I came home, I blissfully surrounded myself with my pens and inks👍
That is awesome! One of the nice things about limiting yourself when you travel is that there is less to keep track of and worry about. It's a nice break from your normal routine of multiple inks and pens!
I'll be going on a No-Buy next month, but will be using and appreciate all the pens, inks and journals that I currently have. I stumbled across this video which gave me inspiration. Thanks!

Interesting how the journey was different for all of us, and the conclusions were similar, I really enjoyed doing the challenge and enjoyed it. Like you said our pens are "happiness sticks", having different nibs and giving us an opportunity to write in different styles.

This would be so hard to do. I suppose I would easily be able to do 1 pen/1 ink, but the 1 notebook would get me - different tools for different purposes. I did enjoy the idea of your one viewer using a vintage pen for the challenge - I feel like my Parker 51 would make a great go-to.
I do agree, different tools for different purposes and that's why the notebook was a bit of a pain. But now I'm looking at all the notebooks I use and wonder if I should slim that down!

Happy Sticks...happy tools. I so relate. I'm a disciplined person so not much of a challenge for me. What I would end up doing is walking away from using fountain pens and find a new way to write. Ooh what a timely video! I'm gearing up for my own challenge: one pen, one ink for July. I picked a vintage Swan and I'm looking forward to getting to know it very very well. I'll be allowing myself to use other inks with dip pens and brushes, because I use those for sketching. I could never do one notebook though! My hobonichi is too precious. The stuff you saw was things I had ordered before I did my 30 days (I almost always have something coming in the mail). One pen I had ordered a year ago! It strangely turned up right as I started my 30 days--can you believe it?! hahaha!

I am going to try to do this 30 Days One Pen One Ink challenge after I clean up my current 11 inked pens. Normally, I don't like to have more than 3 at any given time. Mostly because I am afraid they might dry up. And cleaning them always stresses me out as I constantly think I have not done a good enough job and am leaving some ink to build up in there with every use. I can't wait to be able to focus on just one pen and one ink. Thank you so much for this update!

What a fun and interesting video! Thank you. I admire your self-control... I tried my own version of the 30 day tests which involved using only the pens I had currently inked up, but did not realise that most of them were almost empty. So, after about two weeks, having used up or drained about 10 pens, my resolution cracked and I went and cleaned and then filled up half a dozen gorgeous Pelikan M800, Sailor 1911 Large and one Twsbi Eco with a 1.1 stub. It felt wonderful.
Maybe next time, I will organise myself properly and decide on 5 or so fountain pens, fully filled with my favourite colours and see if I can be disciplined enough to use only these 5 pens... The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak, however.

Maybe you could even do a "as soon as a pen is empty, I need to fill it or clean it out by the end of the day" kind of thing for 30 days as it seems like you really enjoyed freshly inked pens! I always have way too many pens inked up and half of them dried out. I've learned to live with it hahaha!

Yesterday I had to clean a pen that had a residue of ink for about 10-15 minutes, before I could fill it up again- and only because there was ancient and deeply dried up ink somewhere in it... : )

I watched this video, thinking, "wow, I could never do that." Then I remembered that I already did. It was out of necessity though. Two years ago, I bikepacked through Georgia (the country, not the state) for a month. Every night, I sat in my tent and wrote about my day in a pocket notebook with --in hindsight-- really crappy paper. I used an old Pelikan Pelikano because a) it had a fine nib, allowing me to write really small, b) I wouldn't be devastated if I lost it, and c) because it used ink cartridges. I didn't run out of ink but I did almost run out of paper, forcing me to write smaller and smaller every day. Not a lot of stationery stores up in the Caucasus mountains, lemme tell ya. Luckily I didn't have to write any grocery lists or letters ;)
I did almost lose the notebook while trying to cross a river up in the mountains. It was in a little shoulder bag that I used to carry my essentials, my wallet and ID. Losing them would have been a pain but not nearly as frustrating as losing the notebook, as I needed it to write my blog when I got back home. Good times.

@@darkchocolate4643 It looks like you are a real adventurer (is that a word?) I think you have some really interesting stories to tell (your English is excellent and the F bombs don't detract).
I think the best way to encourage more readers is to break down your adventures into bite size pieces around a theme within your travels. Kind of like Bill Bryson. On his trips, he singles out one thing ( i.e. weird roadside stops on American highways) and brings you along into his world.
Then feed these bits out on your blog in intervals (like once a week or something.) Seeing a huge block of text that takes an hour and a half long to read doesn't allow your reader to sample you first, and then continue with other posts. You are asking them to basically commit to a book.
But if you want to keep it as one long post, you may try having sub-titles, dividing by day, or area, or adventure.
I love hearing from women who go out and have interesting and unusual experiences. It would be wonderful if you could reach more people. I have never biked in the Caucasus mountains and probably never will, but it sounds so exciting and I think you have a real story to tell. I am in the process of following you but I'm having some problem with Medium.

I realize that the posts are very long. That's partly due to the fact that it initially started out as a mere travelogue for a handful of friends abroad who wanted a full report on my trip. They told me they really enjoyed it and it kind of snowballed from there. I put the story up on Medium without giving it too much thought, especially when it came to layout. I suppose I assumed that if people found the story interesting enough, they'd continue reading. I had no expectations.
I will definitely consider cutting it up into smaller pieces. Perhaps I could end every part with a bit of a cliffhanger or I could at least allude to the next adventure to keep it interesting. You've certainly given me food for thought, which is much appreciated!

I did the same pen and ink for most of my second semester of school with my Diamond 580ALR Prussian Blue and DIamine Aurora Borealis due to only having two pens at the time, I now picked up a bronze Al-Star with Diamine Honey Burst. Now I've found myself trying to find excuses to write in different colors lol. On an unrelated note: That Spoke Icon is a color combo I hadn't thought of but it looks great

Hey there. Just wanted to point out about the mac touchbar control, @13:52 you can hold and drag in the same motion for the volume and brightness control. Think like a physical slider. Press and slide in the direction you want. Disregard if it has already been pointed out.
Someone had pointed it out, but I'm still pretty clumsy with it haha! It takes a conscious decision on my part to do that where just clicking on the appropriate button on my headset is still easier. Thanks!

Good results. I keep my pen in my pocket and ink bottle in the car and never worry about having a pen or if it’s empty.

This is why I use a binder notebook or discbound notebook. I can use the same notebook but different pages and I can move the pages around if I need to.
You are so right. One of the reasons I migrated to journals many years ago was because all the binders were plain plastic. Now they make so many beautiful binders, it's a good reason to return. I have, to some extent, with my Plotter binder, but it may be too thin.
My friend and I are doing writing challenges this month and at the start of it I thought I'd kick it off by using one pen and one ink (I have multiple projects going so one notebook wasn't going to work.) I chose an ink that worked well with all kinds of paper that I like to use, Sailor Tokiwa Matsu. And I chose my Benu Skulls and Roses in Gamma Green because it's a momento mori but in the green meant to symbolize new beginnings and acceptance... and I know those are some seriously unusual choices. Most people would not be like "Yeah I'm gonna write for as long as I feel like it with the green ink in the stabby pen" but I'm going through some stuff and wanted to address that in a contemplative way.
I admit that I only made it about ten days before a different pen said it missed me and wanted to work on what I was doing, and this was for myself and not a million dollars or something, so I accepted that, and used the pen that was calling to me. (A blue Aurora Talentum containing Diamine Seize the Night.)
And if I got anything out of my abbreviated challenge, it's that these are my friends, and they all have their strengths. And it's best to spend quality time with each of them to really appreciate them, before getting distracted by something else that is shiny. So yes, happy sticks.
(Still doing the writing challenge though. I've done about 18k words in cursive today. Getting through some writers block.)
Wow! That’s a lot of words-glad you’re working your way out of the block! It’s interesting that we all get something different from this exercise (or some form of it.). Lately I’ve been kind of burned out on he sheer number of inks coming out, I may see this challenge as more of a palate cleanser!
@@InkyRocks Ah! I mistyped, 1.8k words, which is still a lot of words for me these days, and I will take it. I know what you mean about the ink burnout. I want all of it, I love all of it, but I'm finding that a million wrong inks aren't as precious as three or four of the right ones.
Well done for sticking with it, and finding it helped you focus. I think for me the one notebook would be a rule too far, just because I like to keep my diary separate to all else but otherwise I’d likely cope. As to field notes for a fountain pen? Heaps of kudos for successfully completing your very own 30-day challenge. You threw down the gauntlet to the rest of us, which I gladly, if nervously accepted as a true test of will and perseverance. Only that I started on the 26th of May, and achieved this feat by finishing yesterday. Made it a 31- day affair, if that doesn’t disqualify me for violating the stipulated rules. Lol
Anyway, I decided to pick my favorite fountain pen of all time - the Aurora 88. I have eight of them. Had trouble deciding which one to pick. I finally went for the Satin Black w/Rose Gold, with the uniquely wonderful Goccia nib. I also chose one of my firm favorites in inks; Montegrappa Bordeaux (sadly, no longer in production). And I was very afraid I’d run out of my precious stock (I luckily averted that with some to spare). Also, I wrote with my pen for 27/31 days. For paper, I went with my B5 Apica C.D. 80 gsm Notebook.
I had two new pen deliveries arrive during this 30-day adventure. I abided by the rules, and only opened the packages early this morning.
I reckon I became more convinced than ever that I have an excessive amount and variety of ink. I had realized this last year. But this 30-day regime left me in no doubt that I need to offload several of my inks (especially some of the blues). And that I should have NEVER bought so many inks. I could happily live with just a dozen different inks, instead of the more than fifty I currently own.
Next, I realize acutely how I’ve made a common ‘mistake’ of sometimes buying the same pen in different colors/finishes that has needlessly swelled my collection and made me spend somewhat whimsically and imprudently on expensive pens of which I could easily have done with only one. This realization hit home hard while writing solely with my wonderful Aurora 88 through the whole month. Not that I suddenly regret buying all my 88s. Only that I could have possibly been just as content buying only one. On the contrary, I’m more convinced than ever before that having the option, liberty and pleasure of using many different nib sizes and specialty grinds is very important to me. So, that made this 30-day challenge very daunting and instructive to me. I couldn’t live with using just the Goccia nib, as fantastic as it really is. Ditto, paper, that sometimes overlooked but no less important and appealing third of the traditional triad of fine writing. I really do need to use more than one type of paper to fully enjoy my writing experience.
There’s more that I could say but clearly forgetting at the moment. But I cannot end before conceding that the 30-day challenge revealed to me ever more starkly the myriad digital distractions keeping me from doing more deeper work daily. And how otherwise naturally wired I am for analog instruments and modes of work that I should happily adopt more of that into my life. I’ve always instinctively hated (and sucked at) multi-tasking anyway. I use social media quite selectively. And email just as sparingly. The unceasing joys of reading printed paper books and writing with my beloved fountain pens and prized inks almost daily is one among sundry other pastimes that make life worth living.
I’m so glad to have taken up this challenge. It’s got to be one of the more interesting, enjoyable, if trying things I’ve done this year, so far. Many thanks for showing the way and sharing your own illuminating insights on the same.
Wow! It sounds like you wrung every drop of usefulness out of this exercise--congratulations! I had remembered you wrote that you might do this but had no way of contacting you on the Tube. I have the same problem with multiple colors of the 3776. I've decided that I am going to have to cull it some and also all the inks I have. There is certainly a level of mental burden re-incorporating all my stuff. Thanks for you feedback--I think you got more out of this than I did!

1. I would be leery of syringing a converter for fear of wearing out its opening with all the taking of it on and off.
2. I just acquired my grail, a Pilot 743 (FA). I haven't taken it out of the box yet. My intent is to use it every day, drawing in a small sketchbook, till I fill it, to get really familiar and skilled with it. Waiting till I finish my current drawing, which will be later today. I imagine this task could take 30 days, but don't really know.
Congratulations! That sounds like a great plan--filling the book instead of making it a time thing. I don't think it really matters how long it takes--it might be a better parameter.

While studying, I developed the habit to change the writing tool when I got stuck in solving a problem. The new tool symbolizes that I need to approach the problem from a new direction. I still use this technique today, writing several pages each day with at least three different fountain pens (3 out of about 20, all loaded with a few different inks) on my desk. So I will not take your very interesting but somewhat masochistic challenge.
Hahaha! It WAS masochistic! That is such a great idea. My problem is I have like 20 pens inked and that’s because I’m trying to cut down. If I don’t pay attention, I would have a lot more inked up and drying out all over the place. Perhaps I’m trying to go in “new directions” too often.

fyi the touch bar volume control is slideable, put your finger on it and slide left or right instead of the tapping, it is sometimes quicker than using headphone controls depending on your set.
Thank you! I've had a few people point that out but when I try it, you have to momentarily hold the volume button then slide. For me just clicking the volume button on my headset seems faster and easier. I'm probably just more used to that hahaha!
I'd have chosen the same pen, same nib, & same ink. My C74 is nearly always inked anyway & is versatile. Pilot blue-black is a favorite.
I definitely have a greater appreciation for all three. I'm currently still using them!

Very interesting project/challenge. I think I may attempt this as well. I have a new pen arriving in a day, so I will wait till that arrives before I start. Mine will probably be; Leuctturm1917 120g A5 notebook, DeAtramentis Document Black Ink, and N9 fountain pen.
It was something that I found to be useful. Your combo sounds good as that Document Black ink is a nice all around useful ink. Good luck--I hope you get some useful insights!
I only use a Hobonichi diary and I have a Custom 74 with a soft fine nib. I can definitely limit myself to a bottle of Iroshizuku Shin Kai, so I'll try this experiment during July!

While you always make great videos, I have often wondered about the ‚using only x for n amount of time‘-challenges. I did that kind of challenge when I was a young girl at a boarding school where wearing the same clothes every weekday for almost a year came with the territory. In the decades after that I learned to celebrate abundance and still am exploring the border between abundance and clutter. The only ink restriction I ever put myself under was only using black ink for a year after my mother died. I don‘t think I ever used black ink since. If I want to find out anything about my habits I‘d much rather change only one variable. What I learned from this video is that I don‘t write enough, because it takes me weeks rather than hours to empty a small converter let alone something like a TWSBI.
I like your "exploring the border between abundance and clutter". It's all relative. I felt like I was getting too close to the "clutter" and the "I need to get the next new thing" side of life. I'm sorry about your mother. Using only black ink for a year was a wonderful gesture.

I am a sucker for colorful inks and will sometimes write a letter with multiple colors so I probably won't be trying this but I enjoyed your point of view on it.

The intro reminds me of the story of the Korean monk who was gifted a fountain pen, he loved the pen and used it a lot. One day his friend got him another fountain pen. Soon he realised he wasn’t using the first one as much as he used to, so he gave away the second one to someone so that he would cherish the first one again.
It’s a story I admire but always end up telling myself, I’m excused to be greedy as I’m no monk. 😂

Another great video! I think notebooks are fundamentally different than pens and ink because they're the *artifact* that's left when it's over. You could borrow a pen and ink for a challenge like this, but presumably you'd want to own/keep the paper. 😜 So if the structure or organization of the paper is important to you (e.g., this notebook for those purpose, that for another), giving that up would be more disruptive.
Of course the same could be true for pens and inks, but probably less dramatically. I use certain pens with larger nibs mostly for titles and headers and labels, and I'd miss that with one pen (unless it has something cool like a cross point nib), but I'd survive.
Now I'll try to get off my phone and do some deep work with my joy sticks. 😀🎉😀

In Dec 2020 I set a goal of no new pens in 2021, six months in and am good. Then in June, after stocking up on nibs, inks and paper I decided no pen related purchases for the remainder of 2021.
I am enjoying the pens, inks, nibs and papers I own without chasing the next must have item. We will see what happens in 2022.
To tell you the truth, if I could get rid of most of my ink and about half my pens, I would enjoy my pen hobby more. But now doing RUclips videos, they have become props. I still may want to streamline. Good luck on your "no-buy" for the rest of the year. I think it will be enjoyable and to some extent "free-ing".

Yay for challenge! I liked the note about how it's all up to us when it comes to rules, I played with the thought of the challenge but I use different pens for different situations (thick nibs for hobonichi, EF nib and a zebra pen for work...) that it seemed difficult. But I can change those rules for myself after all, and maybe after I finish the challenge of reducing inked pens, I will get to it, I think. Messups will happen, but if mistakes are non-consequential I don't believe they need to be sweated over much... Interesting point about buttons thing but I have a thought about it - there is also a difference between sliding a thing on a screen vs physical act of touching a button. The second one will always feel faster and reaction will be more instinctive, no?
There may be some truth to that. The model before had a plain button for volume up and one for volume down--both physical buttons. It was so much easier to use, and yes, it seemed faster. This one is just silly, but I have to give it to them, they only have one mute button, so maybe I should use that more! I definitely thing people should construct their rules to get what they want out of the challenge. Just suffering seems pretty silly if you don't get anything out of it. I hear you about reducing the number of inked pens--I have not been able to successfully do that!

Congratulations on the challenge. I was going to do this when you first talked about it but got sidetracked and forgot about it. Well I think July is the month for me to try this. Maybe I'll sucker a few friends into it with me. My modifications would be to have 2 notebooks, one for work and one for personal. Also I am going to include 1 pencil.

I don't see myself doing this challenge anytime soon for various reasons, but I'd definitely pick my Pilot Kakuno Fine with Graf von Faber Castell Deep Sea Green or Pilot Iroshizuku Tsuyu-kusa (I wonder if those are considered "office friendly" if anyone wants to pitch their thoughts) and that way I'd actually use my con-70 (I have a shimmer ink in there right now in a cartridge and I suspect it would be a pain to clean despite the volume). :)
I have a lot to say, but during the interim between your announcement and this release, I've gotten a new pen and summer really is a time when your ink usage drops unless you're super deliberate with drawing and writing. Maybe I'll need to focus in a handful of colors at a time in light of what I want to be prepared for come summer's end.

That's actually and interesting approach. Like over the summer, concentrate on a selection of colors, or a family of colors. See how that goes. Sometimes restricting your choices give you more creativity.

OMG these cheap Japanese prices on pen and ink are killing me 😂. Another option would be to put the extraneous types of writings such as the grocery list on your phone. Thereby consolidating everything in just two locations

Yes, its and A5! My only gripe is that I wish I could carry more papers in it (like if it was thicker). But it is such a lovely notebook!

I ordered it from India I think. If you are asking where to go for shopping check out Itoya (I believe there is one in Yokohama) and then in Tokyo: Itoya, Kingdom Note, Loft and Tokyu Hands (and just about any major department store's stationery floor).
It’s a cool idea, but I could never do one pen for 30 days. I’m 72 with arthritis in my wrists. I write 4 or 5 letters almost every day. I change pens, and most times paper, with every letter. I can’t be positive, but it seems to me that the variation of pen size, nibs, and paper lessons my hand discomfort. I can write for 3 hours comfortably, most days. 😁
I think you are on to something. You are not constricting your hand in the same position for long periods of time when you change pens and I think you are right about the paper too. I think those subtle changes in grip and pressure can make a big difference. Congrats on your letter writing--that is a LOT of letters!

Yes, I think they work really well for people who enjoy the finer nibs. They are also OK with Japanese F's too!

It is the Toos "Ribbon" and currently has a waiting list here in Japan of about 4 months. I think Shigure inks carried a couple but sold out right away. A couple of other glass makers are starting to do more "italic" nib type glass pens but they are still rare. I may do another glass pen video as the popularity seems to be growing more than I had imagined!
I’m going to have to make this a one year or possibly lifetime challenge so I can afford eggs and potatoes. Poverty sucks.

😊I hear you. That was definitely one of my worries making this video. When I told my husband that people had a hard time not buying anything for a month, he was truly puzzled. "Why would you need more than one pen, ink and journal?" is what he thinks. It feels frivolous.
