Hello RUclips friends, and welcome to another wonderful video from Paddy's DIY
In this video I'm going to show you how I shelve / rack out my new van. It's a 2021 Ford Transit 350 Trend. It's front wheel drive, L3H2 (Length 3, Height 2). The inside headroom is 1886mm. This gives an extra 4 inches head room in the back over the rear wheel drive version. Which means I can stand up without hitting my head. My previous van was a Ford Transit 350 L3 H3, Length 3 Height 3. The headroom in this van was 2125mm. Loads of space, but on a lot of occasions I've scraped the top of the van with low hanging branches. Also it's really difficult to reach up there to wash the top. Seriously, the top of my old van was green with moss.
This is the 6th or 7th van of mine that I've racked out. I was never a fan of the metal racking systems. They could never offer exactly what I wanted. I prefer to make it myself exactly as I want. Having racked out a lot of vans, I've learned what works for me, and what doesn't. And with most things the simpler the better.
So a little bit of background on what I actually need the van racking for. I have a locksmith and window and door repair business. As part of the window and door repair business I also do replacement double glazing. So in the van I need a glass rack for transporting glazing. A bench to work at and a place to mount my bench vice and key cutting machine. The bench will also double as a storage unit for the many many replacement window and door parts. Lastly, storage at the side door for tools.
The first part of the build is the glass rack. I'm using 3 inch by 2 inch planed all over (as opposed to rough unplanned timber) for the base frame, and 4 inch by 1 inch for the cross supports. I'm using tec screws to fix the frame to the van. I then use regular wood screws to fix the cross supports.
The glazing is held securely in place using a ratchet strap. Very simple system, fast and very secure.
So that's it for this video, stay tuned for the next video in this van racking series, which will be about ladder storage.

I used tec screw on the head and floor timbers to screw into the steel. Just regular wood screws all around after that
