The 85mm f/1.4 and the 35mm f/1.4 on full-frame are my favorite lens pair for street photography.
6:16 that man is about to go into a full on food coma. That must’ve been a good sandwich 😅
You’ve got very good photos… very inspiring…. Keep it up!…GOD bless.
Thank you very much! Jah bless.
85 mm for street photography is clearly underrated. Great shots by the way.
Thx so much
I liked the the video you did recently of you bike riding and talking about inspiration and getting out and just shooting. Let me know when you come to New York City. I'd love to walk with you and just shoot. While also picking your brain.
I’ll be down there soon.
Can't locate the 100mm macro video you said you'd make - please advise. thanks!
not made yet. soon. crazy busy with work and businesses.
I'm so happy I stumbled upon your content. Beyond the obvious talent you seem like a genuine human, it makes me comfortable. I'm new to photography, I am also in a wheelchair and will be ordering my first "legitimate" camera and lens this month and having it mounted to my wheelchair, as well as other accessibility features. Watching this makes me excited and I thank you for this.
Thanks for this video, thanks from Italy. Great shot :)
I love Italy. I’ve shot there for a client. The best place and people.
Love this so much. My biggest fear is people getting upset that I am taking photos of them. Do you get that a lot? It seems like everyone is a pretty great sport with you on this video.
I always try to engage usually.. I’m a portrait photographer. I do street photography just to help me with my social anxiety. I don’t really show this work anywhere except for on these RUclips videos. You can see my full portfolio here. SteveCarty.com
Enjoyed!!
What are your typical settings, please? Auto ISO? AF or manual focus? Eye detection enabled? AF servo?
Many thanks!
iso 400 ish. Aperture priority. eye tracking on. one shot mode. you're very welcome. i shoot monochrome on camera but raw so i can change afterwards if i feel. watch another. have you watched all three?
@@stevecarty Thanks for your response, will indeed view the others!
When you tapped phones with the truck guy, what did you drop to him? Contact card?
@@DrJLad yes
Very nice!
Thanks for the wisdom fam. Ive only got one lens. Its on a m4/3 camera, and is a prime lens with the equivalentto a 90mm. Im learning every day on this lens. I cant capture too much of a scene,,, but the way it frames subjects is just a thing of beauty. Again, thanks for the video. Much love ❤️
that's a portrait lens. it's why it so good for that. you do need to eventually upgrade to full frame. and get the lens range. if you want to make a living at a thing, you need the right tools. same if you were a carpenter or a plumber. our tools are just that, tools but still, having the right shit makes this process of getting better much faster.
i'm here for you. ask me anything. and consider subscribing.
@@stevecarty thank you for the advice. You're absolutely right. I also have a half frame film camera with 38mm lens that I shoot,,, and I most definitely feel the need to get a 14mm (28mm equivalent) for the m4/3 camera. Although the subjects are great, the photo always feels so squished together.
Again, thank you for the advice. You got a sub for life ❤️
Thank you for this video.
I do street photography. My go to focal lengths are 35&50mm. For parades or demonstrations I’ll use a 28mm lens. I don’t like that focal length as I have to get closer to my subject than I feel comfortable with. In addition, I have to be more aware of the edge of my frame.
Your video is very inspiring. After failing to score a Fuji X100V/VI I purchased a Sony A7C. The body and lenses I own are small and lightweight. I watched Professor Hines and decided to purchase the Sony 85/1.8. I haven’t used it yet. I don’t routinely ask permission for my images. I’m trying to previsualize what I can do with this lens. The focal length isn’t one I’ve worked with before.
You obviously ask permission of your subjects and engage with them. You are a gregarious person. I am an intervert. Vivian Meier like with a short lens & mirrorless body. I approach the 85mm lens with trepidation. This focal length will require me to work my images differently. This will be scary but at the same time exciting. I look forward to setting my camera up and then hitting the streets.
I’m now going to view your 50mm diaries vid. This is more in my comfort zone. I suppose to grow we need to leave our comfort zone.

Hello. I just discovered your channel, and it is just the inspiration I needed for going out and doing street photography. I am new to photography and the journey has been the medication I needed to re-spark the creative side within me that has been dormant for so long. I have not posted any pics at this time because I am in transition to relocating to another country. But I still jump on RUclips to get inspiring ideas from great artists like yourself. Thank you for sharing your world through your lens.
Let’s go Avl. Glad you’re here.
Thanks for taking us along! I've wanted to try out my 85mm(XF56mm) for street, now you've convinced me! LOL! I also usually shoot with monochrome in the EVF. I think it helps. Nice portraits! Have a great day.
85 was my first lense cause i loved doing portraits. It's still my favorite lens to this day...i dont have the 50 :)
You need to get a 50mm. it’s a more important lens than an 85 if you shoot people. I believe it’s your most valuable lens. ruclips.net/video/nN9NRHhrcRQ/видео.htmlsi=4gj8Oh7yBGKGRxZ0
@@stevecarty ye i got the 35mm 1.4 but honestly i dont use it as much as thought i would
Watching Carty is addictive. These vintage videos tell an even more complete story of this 34 year pro. See how effortless he makes it look. Then like , follow and subscribe. So much to learn.
I'm Waiting for the 135mm f2l
ok ok.. been delaying that one.. it's so hard to use this way... and also my 100mm macro. i live in canada as well so it's brutal up here in the winter months... i'm waiting for some really terrible weather to go out and make some content.
I love how whenever I’m stuck on something the universe points me to an answer and it’s usually always a Carty video!! 4th attempt at ordering an 85mm from amazon hopefully it comes in tomorrow! Thanks Carty for all you do and give!
So glad! It’ll come. It’s a test of your patience. The devil is up to some shit with you girl but guess who always wins in the end. Stay on it. It’ll come.
Have to use the 85 also in future for street. Mostly use the 50 for street. I like your results you showed in this video. Thank you.
Appreciate you. I bought my 50mm first. And then an 85. If you want to shoot people, that should be the route.
Don't know bout you but this black and white feel.....*chef kiss* mastery in its finest
I tend to use a low profile setup for street photogaphy. Hope no one got angry seeing the big lense pointed at them.
B&W, great choice!
Thx cc
thanks for watching my latest lens diaries! make sure you watch the previous ones! 50mm ruclips.net/video/nN9NRHhrcRQ/видео.html | 16mm ruclips.net/video/i1KIb7JeOLA/видео.html watch those next!
Oh I have, and they've got me all excited to go out and shoot when the weather here (Phoenix, AZ) cools down a bit. We just got out of the hot as hell phase 110 degrees and up for over a month and a half. (Somewhere around 35-40+ Celsius )🥵
I will maybe one of these days I'll have the honours of you criticing an old amature.... thanks for your time...I wish you the best on your site...by the way the lenses you use are they canons????...have you ever used the sigma 105 mm bokah master????
@@anthonyharriott3869 i use canons indeed. I had the 105 1.4 sigma in my hands and on camera. A friend of mine had this lens in ownership. That thing is verry heavy, pictures it helps creating are great.
good job there bud
Thx fam
Steve! Man oh man am I glad I came across you here. I think that you maybe the shot in the arm I need for some new inspiration to get back out there. I haven't been out since December of 2022. That's weak-sauce I know. The worst part is I'm new to photography. 😶🌫 Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Let’s go Briggs.
🌹
Thank you Mahmood
I preferred your 16mm and 50mm diaries over the 85mm. I liked the image quality of those lenses better and you're framing with the 16mm seemed more interesting to me. The extra environment of the 16mm gave more context to the main subject I felt. Bokeh is not my thing, especially in street photography. I think it has its place but it is often overused. It takes more skill to consider what's in the background than to just turn it into a blur in my opinion. I think bokeh can make a photographer lazy the same way you feel about zoom lenses which I agree. I think a zoom can be an economical way to experience different focal lengths if you shoot it like a prime by leaving it at one focal length for a complete photo session though. Zooms can be advantages with moving subjects like sports. Different tools for different jobs. Also love your channel, keep doing what you're doing.
thanks so much dwayne
Thank you. Most people are shooting with mirrorless but you created a beautiful body of images with DSLR and 85mm lens. Love all the images. ❤❤❤❤
This is an R5 mirrorless camera.
Loved the interaction with truck guy ❤
This was awesome, Steve! Really great photography here! Love the approach👌
Thanks for watching Hugo! There are a couple others in the series I’d love your opinion on! My 50mm and my 16mm lens diaries. Lmk your thoughts
@@stevecarty Nice! let me check them out👌
I like this guy i have an 85mm lens that shoots crisp images of anything i point it towards ,thanks for this video i loved it excellent inspiration "thank you.
Thanks for watching!
Maybe family, brother & sister
I just love this series. Stumbled across your YT page and I'm so glad I did!!
Glad we found each other.
Carty getting bold out there. Love it! I enjoy seeing the difference between the various single lenses. Thank you!
i'm so happy you're here absorbing my content. so much more to come.
85mm is old school portrait focal length if your subject is people it make sense to me to use in street photography
Old school. lol. Nothing old school about an 85. Who’s giving you information?
New sub , always good to find photographers that look like me!!
Thanks for the sub!
Dammm I’m so happy I found you. Big inspiration man, thanks for that.
Welcome aboard!
Pro tip, Use a 50mm 1.4 on a crop sensor camera for 75mm framing, gets a good middle ground between 50mm-85mm, its a whole lot cheaper too ;)
Not my recommendation but ok. SteveCarty.com/archive look and see who you’re commenting on. It’s not my first rodeo. I’ve been doing this for 3 1/2 decades.
@@stevecarty congrats got me beat by 9 years. Im a 20+ year college art and photography teacher. My comment was for any new people coming through, not directed at you. Photography doesn't have to be expensive and there are no set rules, this is better than that or vice versa, its all preference. I get new channels recommended on my front page every single hour, I'm not going to research every single person on every single channel, that's ridiculous lol. Here today , gone tomorrow, don't take it personal.
I like the idea of a theme when you go out shooting
it's the only way to do it. if not your lost as a boss in a forest.
Like your thoughts on street portraits and the respect you show towards the people you shoot. Good work.
Thx so very much. Glad you found me
Coooool))) Thanks a lot! Really looking forward to another episode.
More to come!
Can totally relate to the 50&85 relationship. Love em both 😍
Right?
Hi from Germany. Cool Video. Would Love to see more from you.
welcome! appreciate you... lots of new content.. i go live 3x a week.
I love my EF 135mm f2 L. Can't wait to see what you're going to do with it. This is beautiful.
Awesome, thank you! its coming! it's high summer.. slammed with commercial work
@@stevecarty are you saying that making money is more important than testing old lenses? I'm confused 😊
Love this man, great to choose a theme and roll with it. Good stuff
thanks so much mark for watching and all your insights!
Thank you for this video, it is really inspiring! It's interesting to see the next part too, how it is to shoot architecture with 85 mm lens :))
Thanks for watching Julie❤️
@@stevecarty it’s a great video ❤️

This is real good stuff my man.
appreciate you leonard.
Love the framing at 6:40. Wow!
Thx for watching me!
Great video Steve. I started doing street photography as a teen in the 70’s but strayed away from it over the years. I’m feeling stagnant with my nature and landscape and decided to jump back into it. I’m going to go out with my 85mm to get “comfortable” with shooting strangers again. I found your 10 minute video inspiring, Thanks man🤙🏼
Happy to be here for you stebo
Super love all angles, all shots!!!
Thanks a ton!
Like it keep it up. Ahmad❤
Thanks Ahmad!❤️

Honestly this video is a pretty bad advertisement for 85mm lens.
Haha. Your attitude reflects in your comment! SteveCarty.com/archive why not look at my real work. ruclips.net/video/XuuniBtesWA/видео.htmlsi=nJyVBwwu0DTAMpM1 your turn.
