85mm is by far my favorite lens I shoot with and its a 1.8. It's just something about the compression and separation from the background that makes it a dream lens.

One should know that 99% of portrait and fashion photographers are using focal lengths of 85mm or longer. Standard 'portrait" lenses have been produced in 85mm, 105mm, and 135mm focal lengths. A 85mm provides a comfortable working distance and adequate field of view when shooting indoors. A 24-120mm zoom provides full coverage in a single inexpensive (relatively) lens.
Working distance is important when photographing most people as a 50mm lens means getting twice as close and most people will stiffen when their personal space is intruded upon by someone with a camera.

Very interesting. I don't think there is a clear winner: to me, some of the 50mm photos - with more background in them - looked better than the corresponding 85mm: the incorporated background added something that was missing in the 85mm. In others, the 85mm looked better because the background in the 50mm was distracting or ugly. But I guess that's exactly the point you are making. Thanks for the video.

    My current setup is 20mm f2.8, 40mm f2, and 105mm f1.4
The 105 never goes from my main body, I always have a story to tell with compression, but if I want to tell where my talent is the 20mm really tells a story different enough from 24mm hence why I picked it. Thank you for the video!

Thank you for the clear comparison in my opinion. After this, I found the 50 lens allows for shooting more diverse shots, such as depth of field, photography indoors, people in green nature, and photography from below, with sharpness, focus, and appearance, while the 85 gives isolation and a modern look, and for photographing the most beautiful people on the street.

  • @JosefFoti

I also really enjoy shooting with the combination of a 35mm and 85mm. I tend to use 50mm more as the only lens in a photoshoot but yes, sometimes I'm in the mood to shoot with the 50mm as well. The only thing I don't enjoy so much about the current 85mm GMaster is the minimum focusing distance. In a new version a significant improvement in this regard would be the main selling point for me.

The 50mm lenses I use are manual focus lenses. Light lens lab Elcan which weighs just 230 grams, small but solid for its size. It has the sort of analogue or vintage look that I like over the super sharp new 50mm. It is easily the lens that I can take around for street photos. I also use 58mm F1.4. Voitgalander.

@JuliaTrotti Oh, so many thoughts here! You read my mind again. I keep waiting for that amazing 85 1.2, and look longingly at Canon portrait photographers who get one. Supposedly there *is* a new 85 coming out soon, but it's supposed to be a new 1.4, not the 1.2! The 85 was my very favorite lens...until I got the 135 1.8. I still love it, but I find that it can't quite keep up with some of my faster moving subjects like Sony's newer portrait GMs can. One thing I'm really split on is sharpness. Of the 35 1.4, 50 1.2, 85 1.4, and 135 1.8, the 85 is the softest. Sometimes, I love that it is, because that makes for wonderfully soft, dreamy, and easier to retouch portraits. But sometimes, I feel better about the world when my subjects come out super sharp, even when shooting wide open. So where do you stand on soft and dreamy vs. sharp and 3D poppy (the great cultural debate of our time...)? Are you going to get the new 85 1.4 when it comes out, or hold out for the 1.2? And did any penguins sneak into this shoot? :-)

For pure portraits, the 80mm is better but when I'm doing events and I need a fast lens, the 80mm is too tight and I end up having to be too far away especially if I have to use a body mounted flash. So I have a 50mm because of its flexibility. Nice work, thanks for the video.

  • @WilliamJohnston
    @WilliamJohnston 5 месяцев назад

I totally agree with you that 85 is like a 50 but bigger and better in every way, the weird thing is in this video, I almost always preferred the 50mm, I don’t know if it’s due to the 1.2 having more of that slight ‘bokeh swirl’ in the corners that really draw the eye In, or the slight distortion that the 50mm has, kind of makes the 85 look flat from time to time.
    I’m a canon shooter so I love my RF 85 1.2 and 50 1.2, i use an adapter Tamron 35mm 1.4, and an old Ef 135mm f2.
I think 50 is maybe my favourite ‘default lens’, so I wonder if I should get the new RF 135 f1.8 to compliment it more… the solution is almost ALWAYS to buy more gear, right? 😂👍

I heard rumors of the Sony 85mm f1.2 coming soon. Sony might pull it off. But Nikon F mount is also a small mount and they never made a 85mm f1.4 and the F mount is larger then the E mount.
There are a few Sony lens I don't like the bokeh one is the Sony 70-200mm f2.8 at 70mm the bokeh is busy and the 600mm I've seen for wildlife had some bokeh that was not that great.
Most of all the newer Sony lens are really good but Sony does have to work harder in designing lens for a small mount. If you look at the Nikon 135mm f1.8 the lens is perfect and covers the sensor just right. Panasonic has made some very nice smaller lens. There is rumor of a Sony 24-70mm f2.0

Can't you take the exact same perspective with a 85 though? You'd just have to take a few steps back.
I think the difference is more about how close or far you want to be able to shoot your subjects from rather than then end result itself
