Ted, Ive done a lot of landscape photography, but only just bought my first drone. Watched lots of vids before buying a DJI, and lots of vids of how to fly/ what to buy etc! Then I came across your channel . Wow! your first guy Ive watched who cuts through the bullshit and makes you realise its really about photography not just flying about! Had my drone less than 2 weeks now , but man, you have opened my eyes to so much, now, rather than flying everytime I can, Im taking time to think and plan where and when to shoot and how to go about things. Ive seen some peoples videos that are very good, but you are the only guy who cuts to the "how to get results. Thank you Ted, you are a great teacher! Steve in the UK
Thanks for this video, Ted! I keep coming back to it as it is full of helpful info. I also just shared it with my brother, who is about to join our drone cinematography family. Take it easy, brother ✌️
The interesting thing about your videos, Ted, is that they are highly "bingeable"! I started a year ago with drone shooting, actually, few years back I wanted to own a drone to document my experience of the world. During the last year I obsessed with all the things you mentioned, filters that make your videos more "cinematic", drone movements that are insta-"cinematic", "cinematic" settings, 180 rule, better "cinematic" LUTs, better editing software, etc... Interestingly enough, of all the youtube "drone experts", close to no-one ever mentioned the true essence of art and creativity which is a meaningful and captivating video in its art and form through composition and small amount of color manipulation. I almost lost my fun and will to fly anymore. The point I want to make here, is a big thank you to you. After watching your channel, it invigorated me again to start looking around for those small things that make a difference. Your simplicity and approach to the content, let alone coaching technique truly shows experience; test-and-trial talking through every advice; truly remarkable. Thank you again.

Very true John, I find the same thing happens to me, I watch heaps of “how to” drone videos and certainly agree with your comments regarding information overload. Another fantastic video Ted 😀It is packed with useful information that will definitely move me a little bit closer to getting my dream shot 😀 When l got my Canon EOS 50 film camera's back in the days, and later my Canon 30D digital camera that l used enthusiastically for year, l spent endless hours getting educated on your rules of composition, and then practicing applying it when taking photos. Since l got my Mini 2 (and now Mini3 pro), l have spent hours and hours watching helpful RUclips videos from guys that mostly are explaining the drone manual to me. They have all been very helpful, so hopefully, l don't sound ungrateful to them, but none of them comes close to do what you do, and that is to combine the two, flying and the art of photography. I bought my first drone 9 years ago just to fly it. I got my Mini 2 that l replaced with a Mini 3 Pro with the main purpose of filming my motorcycle rides. After l found your channel, l feel that l am getting all exited again about my photography hobby that l have been neglecting for years, but now l will replace my Canon DSLR camera with a Dji flying drone camera. Time will only tell where this excitement will take me 🤣🤣 Thanks again, and keep up the good work 👏 🙌
@Ted Nemeth l have a V-Strom adventurebike that l like to take off road in Iceland, but here in Canada I have a Suzuki Boulevard C90 cruiser that l bought new in 2005. I recently had an accident on that bike where l broke my collarbone and a few ribs. I am getting back to normal but now l have to decide if l want to spend my money on repairing my old and reliable bike, that l have made my own with all the possible accessories l could find, or to get another bike 😙
Hi, Ted. I am so glad I found your channel... it makes me think every time I take my Mini 2 out. I might just be blind but I can't find the settings in the comments/description that you mentioned.
yeah buddy! thank you for the kind supportive words my friend. Welcome to the family here. Dude I just checked out your channel. And loved your latest episode. New York? That kinda looks like Catskills area is my guess?!
@@TedNemeth not the Catskills that’s actually just outside of Rochester! And thank you very much I am just starting out have no idea what I’m doing just learning from watching you
Great advices that are sometimes easy to forget! And "Pro" tip ... when you change some settings while shooting, don't forget to press the "record" button again or you might miss some nice stuff (happened to be yesterday 😢).
@@TedNemeth Thanks, Ted. Yes, I saw your comment on the Pecan Grove ride. Is that the one? My latest is from the same trip, but with the Fall color in Arizona's high country. ruclips.net/video/9gk5-w6pzpw/видео.html
And don't think I am not paying to your videos. "I did not get laid that year" almost made me shoot my coffee out of my nose. And the shot with you and your dad on the pier. And Easter Egg at 4:37.
Thank you Ted so much for pointing to one filter which I think will be super helpful since we live in a valley where the sun is brutally strong. Our golden hours are very short and the light changes fast. While flying with the bright light, videos are flickering on 24 fps (30 fps helped). ND64 it is. Always with gratitude for your lessons.
Thanks for this video Ted and all your other awesome and helpful videos. I've been generally using 24fps, but sometimes I notice jitters and wobbling in the video, and more specifically when doing hyperlapses with my DJI Mini 3 Pro. I'm come across many videos on RUclips saying to use 30fps to avoid jitters and wobbling. Do you have any thoughts on this?
Well said Ted!! I think for me the issue is I don't go out and practice enough. Yeah!..I'm the guy that just flies around and hopes to get some decent footage. I have been planing more which does make a big difference. I still have a little anxiety when flying. Things like bringing my gimbal down and not able to see what's around me. Even if I know there is nothing in my way. So I appreciate these videos. BTW It may be a trip for you, but found a great marina to fly over in Babylon. Took off from a venue called The Piermont in Babylon. Was lucky to capture all the channels and boats on the bay. Been going to a few marinas on the Great South Bay. Love it. Thanks for taking the time to help others.
hey Casey! thanks for the kind words ma man. I’m finishing a new episode now which I think is my most valuable tutorial of all. It’s taking me forever to finish this damn gal. Done in a few days….please check it out. Your Stinger is gorgeous. I was just telling a buddy yesterday Kia hired a serious design team a few years ago. Legit.
@@TedNemeth I can’t wait to see the video, my mini 3 pro arrives today. I was laughing when I was watching your one video about getting your first drone. I do appreciate the simple approach that you’re offering. The stinger is an amazing car, I have had a lot of sporty cars in my time, however the stinger is close to the top of the list. It’s discontinued now. It’s to bad people weren’t able to look past the badge. They truly missed out! You’re are correct, they did design the stinger with the designer from BMW and Audi.
If you listen carefully to Ted's lessons, and then watch the cinematic choices he makes in his own videos, you'll understand. He puts his mind into each shot. Look at his clips and you'll see that every shot tells a story. Each choice he makes is intentional, like a good writer who uses honest syntax to craft declarative sentences and engage his audience. He cuts out the BS and isolates the purest essence of the shot. That doesn't mean he skips over technical information, but he really shows how to tell a story with a drone. He's changed the way I shoot and I am so much happier with the results than I used to be. Give his method a shot and I guarantee you'll see improvement in your own results no matter how you've been shooting in the past. Be a drone storyteller, not just a robot with a controller in your lunch hooks.
Excellent Episode Amigo. Even though this is aimed at beginners, you've re-enforced some crucial fundamentals that shouldn't be overlooked. Hey, nothing wrong with a toot toot either 🎺. Really enjoyed this episode as always and appreciate the hard work that goes into it 👍Appreciate comments you've made on my vids too. You've been helping me by asking questions which are not really questions but pointers on what I could do better..... clever el compañero, very clever 👌👏❤️
Great video. I've borrowed a lot of accessories. I bought a better drone. But you're spot on you need to practice slow down. I'm getting better. My brain is starting to see composition. Looking forward to watching more of your videos
hey Fred! Your sentence is priceless: MY BRAIN IS STARTING TO SEE COMPOSITION. Yes. Once you start to grasp it a little you can really start to see progress. And nothing is more motivational than progress.
How many truths there are in these 28 minutes of video! 😀It would be very nice to have the time and the opportunity to always have a slow intentional workflow, but unfortunately for me it is not always possible, because in my travels I usually manage to fly the drone during small breaks, while family and friends are waiting for me, so I have to do everything quickly and effectively. I have to say that flying under that pressure, while still trying to keep the perspective of the landscape photographer, has helped me to improve my qualities anyway, but the real problem is that sometimes in the excitement I forget to press the rec button! 😅🤣🥴
hey Andrea! I totally know what you mean about sometimes having to throw the drone up real quick to grab a shot. That’s when you have to rely on the instincts that have been built up from slow deliberate practice,….when there’s time. Yup done that too where you capture a great scene then realize forgot to hit the record button. Dang.
I really appreciate all the time & effort you put into this very helpful video. I watch all your content and think this “back to basics” tutorial is one of your best. Many thanks.
Hey Jimmy! Thanks for watching. Yup. Some guys think shutter speed in drones will make-or-break a shot. But this is an art (not a science), so I say everyone is correct. We can all still have a beer together.
Saudações do Brasil , Ted !
Excellent summary of the basics! Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience. You covered some really important concepts in a way that is easy to understand. One thing I would add to the flying part is don't become so hyper-focused on the shot on the screen that you lose track of where your drone is. If that level of focus is necessary, bring a friend to specifically watch the drone's position so you can avoid flying into the top of that 90 foot white spruce. (Don't ask how I learned that lesson! lol)
Another great vid Ted! Do you use AE-Lock in Auto Mode or have you tried it? One would think using the AE-Lock would keep your exposure the same throughout any drone maneuvering, like if your using spotlight, helix, etc.
hey my friend! AE lock defeats the purpose of me using auto exposure mode. Every time the drone makes a tiny change toward & away from the sun, the exposure changes. That’s why its important to use auto exposure. You’ll always have dead perfect exposure. THAT is the most important thing.
Great stuff! Thanks! Just a tiny suggestion, Ted: Please set your video camera to fixed focus. The way this video flips from focusing on your face, then to your moving hands, then back to your face, every few seconds, makes your face keep going into and out of focus, which is visually distracting. Thanks again!
Hey Joseph. I have the Canon R6 which has amazing auto focus. That issue never happened before. Normally it locks onto my eyes (face recognition) so it will ignore my hands in the scene.
great question. There is a difference. I AM NOT an expert at color grading. But this article demonstrates the difference quite nicely: blenderartists.org/t/what-difference-beetween-gamma-exposure-settings-and-ambiant-occlusion/679864/2
"Gear doesn't matter" It's true, but sometimes new gear have features, that you really need(. So for me this feature is active track. I bought my mini 2 year ago and it's really great drone for me small, cheap, and powerful. It seems to me that I have not revealed even half of it's potential. But when the mini 3 was introduced, i felt that my drone is missing a part and this parts were an active track, and sensors (I crashed my mini 2 while flying backwards p.s it is alive). So I think you need to upgrade your gear only when it's unavoidable, and you just can't get active track on mini 2( like you can't get optical zoom on your phone.
hey Andrew! That old Greek saying: “gear doesn’t matter” pertains to some things but not others. For example: a wildlife photographer MUST have a telephoto lens so they don’t scare off the animals. I would say that is specialty gear that is required. But what is implied in that saying “gear doesn’t matter” and I’m applying to the drone community here: is that I don’t want beginners with a Mini 2 ….to think they need to spend $1000 for the new Mini 3 because it has a 1.7 aputure while the Mini 2 only has a 2.8 aputure. I’ve taken astounding low-light images with the Mini 2. Just like consumers are conditioned to think they must upgrade their iPhone 12 to iPhone 13. It’s all marketing. I just want beginners to go out in nature and enjoy the hobby & not fall into the gear marketing hypnosis. Just my opinion. Besides, ….the DJI Mini 4 SuperDuperPro is coming. I can’t wait!
ahh man thank you for acknowledging that. Yeah I gotta figure out how to do this faster/easier but still provide the value. This is my whole life is creating these videos. Need a little variety! Thanks for watching my friend.
Okay mate how would you use your drone to make a beautiful couple minute video of your local church on a hill I have done some filming I have put it into LumaFusion but as you know my mum died three months ago and haven’t been remotely interested in editing flying etc it’s hard enough for me to get through the day without crying uncontrollably at least two or three times a day but I guess it’s time to try and get myself out of bed and do something to live life.
yessssssss! Let’s get back to emailing my friend. Its GREAT to hear you want to get back to creating. The single most motivational human state is the feeling of forward PROGRESS. You MUST return to creating, sharing and connecting with people. That is the core of the human condition brother. LumaFusion is amazing. That’s what I use. I am giving you an assignment my friend! You have 3 days to create that church video and upload it to RUclips and send me the link. You can put the video on private or unlisted if you want. Keep it super simple & just get it completed. This is exciting! Looking forward to it.
@@TedNemeth I will do my best brother weather has been very very windy in Sydney for weeks. Hopefully we have a calm day tomorrow very hard in the wind with the mini three and I don’t like getting the air 2S out it’s too bloody noisy LOL I can try and edit what I’ve got though that would be a baby step. I have absolutely done nothing since mum died to flat to heartbroken to everything to even face the world. I have been going to church that if it wasn’t for Church. I know you don’t wanna hear this, but I probably wouldn’t be here right now.
I enjoy filming with a drone as much as anyone, but I've come to two conclusions about it: 1. 99% of all the footage taken with a drone, should really only be used as B-roll 2. Most clips in the best videos (taken with any type of camera) produce the best results when they're only about 5 -10 seconds in length - longer than that tends to be boring

Time will only tell where this excitement will take me 🤣🤣 Thanks again, and keep up the good work 👏 🙌
ha this is amazing ma man. Thank you for sharing. What type of motorcycle are you currently riding?
Thank you so much Ted, very useful for me👍👍👍
selamat pagi. Glad to hear you’re getting value from my little tutorials. Many thanks.
Hola Ted, very good video man, 😎
I'm not new to drones but I really enjoy watching your content. You make them fun and interesting. Thank you again
hey buddy! I’m super grateful for your support. I try to have fun on these goofy tutorials. Have a great New Year.
Thanks for the drone tips definitely will use them soon
Thank you Connor. Hey I loved your Fall shorts.
Thank you!
Un excelente tutorial con magníficas explicaciones. Aprendemos todos contigo. Buen trabajo dronero. Like 27. Saludos.
gracias Jose! El Castillo de Alhambra = beautiful.
"I did not get laid that year" you're hilarious! love your videos. just got a DJI mini 3 pro. you and captain drone are my go to's on youtube!
yeah buddy! thank you for the kind supportive words my friend. Welcome to the family here. Dude I just checked out your channel. And loved your latest episode. New York? That kinda looks like Catskills area is my guess?!
@@TedNemeth not the Catskills that’s actually just outside of Rochester! And thank you very much I am just starting out have no idea what I’m doing just learning from watching you
Great tutorial Ted 🙌
hey Juan. Many thanks for watching my friend. Please let me know if you have any questions. Have a great New Years!
Great advices that are sometimes easy to forget! And "Pro" tip ... when you change some settings while shooting, don't forget to press the "record" button again or you might miss some nice stuff (happened to be yesterday 😢).
ha! dude you are so right. I do it frequently.
Nice work
I am going to try it out ted, like your stuff.thanks
Hey Hans. Thank you for watching. Please let me know who it goes. And I love your recent Amsterdam shots. Beautiful. I miss it there!
I changed my joystick settings to match my PlayStation controller settings lol so I got some skills with that part ha dope video bro
love that! Hey I loved your 88 Chevy RC in the hurricane. I used to race RC off-road competitively for many years. LOVE IT.
Good stuff. Thanks for the lesson, Ted.
Thank you my friend. Ride safe. I enjoyed your latest video.
Thanks again for the useful lessons, Ted.
Pierre thank you for watching and supporting the channel my friend
Thank you Ted so much for pointing to one filter which I think will be super helpful since we live in a valley where the sun is brutally strong. Our golden hours are very short and the light changes fast. While flying with the bright light, videos are flickering on 24 fps (30 fps helped). ND64 it is. Always with gratitude for your lessons.
glad to hear! I bow to your good graces. Loved your flower carpet episode.
Nice one Ted.
Hey Mike! Thanks for the support my friend.
Great videos my man, I’m a beginner and trying to weed out all the noise. As you say there is a lot of 🐇 🕳️ to go down. I appreciate the help.
hey Casey! thanks for the kind words ma man.
Thanks for debunking the ND craziness all over YT.
You've been helping me by asking questions which are not really questions but pointers on what I could do better..... clever el compañero, very clever 👌👏❤️
hey Chris. Thanks for watching. Dude it means everything to me to hear that my little tips are helping. That’s the juice.
Thanks
thank you for watching Maqbool. If you have any specific questions i would love to help.
Hi Ted
Thank you for amazing class.
Just wanna ask you about ND filter.(mini 3pro)
What is the best setting on bright sunny day?
Thank you
Great video.
Ian that means everything to know its valuable & appreciated. Thank you sir.
shutter speed lutites?....hahahaha 🤣couldn't say it any better great video 🤙
Hey Jimmy! Thanks for watching. Yup. Some guys think shutter speed in drones will make-or-break a shot. But this is an art (not a science), so I say everyone is correct. We can all still have a beer together.
@@TedNemeth yes sir im having a local brewery beer now "DEVICE " brewery here in Sacramento,ca...cheers 🍻

thank you Magia! Hope it was valuable to you.
(Don't ask how I learned that lesson! lol)
that spruce jumped out & got you. I seen it. I’m surprised the “Spruce Avoidance System” didn’t catch it.
I was flying sideways, of course!
When using auto exposure, are you adjusting the exposure compensation to get the exposure where you want it?
toot toot....Great advice
Another great vid Ted! Do you use AE-Lock in Auto Mode or have you tried it? One would think using the AE-Lock would keep your exposure the same throughout any drone maneuvering, like if your using spotlight, helix, etc.
hey my friend! AE lock defeats the purpose of me using auto exposure mode. Every time the drone makes a tiny change toward & away from the sun, the exposure changes. That’s why its important to use auto exposure. You’ll always have dead perfect exposure. THAT is the most important thing.
Useful info 👍
Dziękuję, przyjacielu! - wow that beach shot at the Baltic Sea is beautiful.
@@TedNemeth Indeed. Thank you My Friend 💪
Dude- love your work. One question: why jump to gamma rather than just exposure?- in post
great question. There is a difference. I AM NOT an expert at color grading. But this article demonstrates the difference quite nicely:

What about racing stripes? I heard it adds 20Mpixels and 15 minutes of flight time
yes exactly! thanks Chris
Hi buddy and well done, this vid must have taken up a lot of your time.
ahh man thank you for acknowledging that.
😂😂😂 “I did not get laid that year”😂😂😂
yeah buddy!
I enjoy filming with a drone as much as anyone, but I've come to two conclusions about it:
1. 99% of all the footage taken with a drone, should really only be used as B-roll
2. Most clips in the best videos (taken with any type of camera) produce the best results when they're only about 5 -10 seconds in length - longer than that tends to be boring
hey Tom. Agreed. Thats why I like to fly very low to the ground most of the time. Its more like a Hollywood boom shot.
@@TedNemeth I'm with you all the way
Auto focus while waving your hands around in front of the camera was annoying as hell.
yup I agree. Thank you.
