Overpressure Is A Great Mechanic

When seeing the South African G6 Rhino self-propelled gun on the dev stream, I had two thoughts. First I thought it looked like a vehicle straight out of Command and Conquer. Funnily enough, there is a C&C vehicle based on it. Second, I thought it would be a lot of fun to play. I think I was wrong on that last part. With how inconsistent the overpressure mechanic is in War Thunder, I did not have a great experience. Even light vehicles survived direct hits from the 155mm cannon. I would Gaijin would do a significant overpressure rework, but that can be said for a lot of things in War Thunder.

Yea, I did figure out that the proxy round does fuze against tanks after a certain distance, the inconsistency I was talking about was in reference to shooting light vehicles at point blank.
Yeah if 50 cal can pen a vehicles armor, I'm sure 155 HE should completely shred it
You are not supposed to use that VT against aircraft because it fuses circa at 3m from the ground (irl they use the VT to make the shell airburst and spray the area with shrapnel) or any other surface, so that's why it fuses on tanks
They've done something to BMPs, my Lord. A while ago I discovered the wonders of 105mm HESH against the scourge of the BMPs. Took a break for a few weeks, came back, was suddenly getting no kills with it, most I could hope for was blowing a track off. Fucking ridiculous lol.
HE-VT is less consistent with same stats for some reason, try using HE, it blasts everything.
Could be hull-break by means of the size of the shell on light vehicles, not the explosive mass, killing them.
South Africa: Wheeled vehicles are better in soft sand so they don't bottom out and get stuck.
Gaijin: SAND AND MUD GO SMOOSH hehehe
certified gaijin moment
According to Gaijin, South African vehicles are the worst to drive in South Africa
Odd, they usually underinflate, ie: deflate the tires when going in sand. More traction that way. Most military wheeled vehicles has a air inflation/deflation system just for this purpose. I'm guessing gaijin doesn't think people can fully inflate tires after doing that, for you know, every other surface on the planet.
hey odd
I’ve seen these things drive around irl and the haul ass
The AH-1 continuing to absolutely and mercilessly shred enemies on the ground after being hit with a 155mm high explosive perfectly encompasses the experience of this game. Golden 10/10
CAS keyboard commandos and their busted ass DM's and third person air spawn murder mouse pointer UFO's: "THIS IS FINE."
**50cal sets their engine on fire** "QQQQ, NERF NOW. It's a CAS genocide."

By which you mean it's not realistic at all like the fervent claims of devs and fanbois?
Whether or not the pilot was dead, as soon as that tail came off the rotor torque would have spun that helicopter straight into the ground.
When you get "Aircraft destroyed" it should just lock the controls and guns. Such a simple fix for this.
@@radarradarovic2076 no gaijin should just model helicopters correctly so that when the tail rotor pops off, the main rotors torque should spin the heli repeatedly in circles as it spirals out of control into the ground, rather than allow the pilot to have near total authority over the aircraft while it is missing its second most major component
@@fatshit88715 I was thinking about air vehicles generally. Many times I shot down a plane with "Aircraft destroyed" message only for it to turn on me and blast me away without a problem.
Funny story - the main gun on the G6 is a modified variant of the GC-45 howitzer, which was designed and produced for apartheid South Africa by a Canadian man named Gerald Bull. After the mild success of this venture Bull would then work with Saddam Hussein's Iraq on a 39 inch gun known as Big Babylon, which if constructed would be able to either launch satellites into orbit or lob rocket-assisted artillery shells onto a maximum range of 8000 kilometers.
In the end, the gun was never finished as Bull was assasinated, most likely by Mossad agents, in 1990.
Did anyone, in the present century, anyhow severely sanction Israel?
@@worldoftancraft For Richard Bulls death? No. Because while Israel was the chief suspect, it wasn’t the only one. Iran was also a leading contender. And it wasn’t just those two. There were about half a dozen other governments who wouldn’t have objected to his untimely demise.
The G-6 Rhino, during that same era, from what i've been told, did indeed shoot directly into space, prompting a quick query from US representatives // (lowkey) communications channels, to wonder, what weapon system the South Aftican's just launched into space
fuckers ruining everything again reeeee
Honestly I think Iran is a more likely suspect since they had just fought a life or death war with 10’s of thousands killed including child soldiers if I remember correctly.
That little bit at 6:04 highlights everything wrong with Helicopters and how they are still so broken. Not even mentioning the fact his pilot still survived after the explosion but that his helicopter was still controllable enough (while he was still getting shot by another machine gun) he can go on to get 3 free kills is just disgusting.
He just had a good gaming chair chill
Well I firmly believe that aircraft should be able to spawn at the start of games without anything mounted to counter helicopters. I reckon if they did that helicopters would regret trying to go for the early game kills or at least make it like planes and eliminate start game spawn for helicopters.
It’s really stupid that they can spawn with missiles at the start of games when tanks games only last 3 minutes at top tier already, and a single helicopter can make it last less.
@@superbattledroid1862 heli can only first spawn with rockets.
@@TheStalinator255 well even planes are still mostly controllable after their pilot gets "knocked out". I've had planes where the fuselage is engulfed in fire but itz still controllable and the pilot is able to put shots on target.
@@julienrooknizan5711 still beside my point, Planes are not allowed to spawn at the start of games with or without secondary weapons, so why are helicopters?? It also doesn’t help that most maps have the enemy helicopters spawn on the SAME side as your spawn, making easier for enemy helicopters to spawn camp seconds into the match, Rockets are enough to set the few who might not have FPE and/or parts unlocked on fire and die 30 seconds into the game..
You see Spookston, the AH-1G pilots at 6:03 were wearing their flak vests, so therefore are invulnerable to proxy HE rounds :)))
"Ah, but you can't hang me! I put on my anti-rope neck cream!"
1:26 Actually much the dirt in SA isn't like normal dirt, but rather it's got hard rock close to the surface, which is great for wheeled vehicles.
today i learned
Also, it really depends on how far north you go, it's a large place
So, it's caliche
ever seen our sand,?
@@user-gx6tu3mf4k further south is more deserty. North is more bush.
5:03 there’s a glitch for most wheeled vehicles where the roads made of rocks cannot be driven on and will slow down your vehicle tremendously
probably their patch to counter vehicles getting into places they shouldn't be is not really working well since i read somewhere that it works on the elements of the terrain such as rocks and such but not on the locations themselves.
Its literally only in breslau, a bunch of "paved" roads on that map are actually modeled as mud for some reason
@@singlehotmominyourarea926 yeah and it’s very annoying
It also happens in ice
Had this happen today while using the Concept 3. Using a Sherman Firefly in reverse was faster.
Seeing spookstons reaction to the HE negating M48 was priceless
HE-VT doesnt fuse properly on ground targets. I wanted to take just all HEVT since its the same properties as HE for pen. But it doesnt fuse properly. That and traction makes no sense for this thing as well. Also mud on paved roads acts as a full mud modifier
wheeled vehicles problems
I wanted to say this, as an addition in my experience it seems like it can fuze on ground targets but not consistantly, sometimes its almost like it proxes right before impact resulting in less damage or something. Either way HE is substantially more consistsant.
it does fuse properly phly literally made a video on using only he-vt and it has a 300m arming range.
Despite not properly, it, for some reason, does fuse on ground targets. My guess is the game calculates the closest point to target along the trajectory of the shell or something crazy like that. This though, can be abused to INSANE levels in AB (and if your aim is good then also in RB). If your enemy is hidden behind a ridge and you lob the shell above a hatch or a cupola, itll shrapnel straight into the tank. That is when the tank is properly armored (Tiger I/II, Panther, Sherman/Jumbo, IS-*), if its either an open top or "armored" like a PT-76, itll get blown up basically every time the prox fuse activates around it. If you see someone capping a point early, just aim a distance shot at it and let the poor hellcat player explain to you how big of a "hacker cunt" you are for the rest of the battle. Type 75 SPH is probably best for this garbage because lowest br but all of them work. Would say pls fix gaijin but its too much fun for that lol.
It has an activation range of 300m
HEVT shells can't tell the difference between a tank and a aircraft, so it isn't a good idea to bring proxy rounds against a tank unless you can get it to detonate exactly above the turret
Holy shit it's Bruce Leeroy
oh hey bruce
or shoot it like a normal HE at close range
@@loganwalker8537 Since it has 300 metres activation range, I assume it works exactly like HE closer than 300?
@@EPE77U it should yes, the 2s3m has a activation range of 500m i believe
The roads on the Prague(?) map are actually infuriating, I think they accidentally gave them mud physics because I get that map in my Concept 3 all the time and I'm just stuck trundling around at like 20km/h the entire game, its not just this vehicle.
Also, I know this thing has a much faster reload, but the FV-4005 exists at a lower BR and besides lacking the proxy fuse the ammo just feels so infinitely more reliable than this did for me.
Breslau
Ive noticed that it seems like they put mud at the cubside and it basically makes it so that if you arent right in the middle of the road (or are just too wide of a wheeled vehicle), say hello to 5-7mph top speed :)
that first clip already cracked me up lmao
5:00 the roads on breslau are bugged. for example the ratelts can only do 29kph on it which is equal to snow
Yeah, I played the Contract 3 and it suffers too
That AH-1 Cobra being unfazed by a 155m shell and going on to get 3 more kills is amazing. GG Gaijin
should have aimed for the cockpit
I find it funny that SA vehicles are wheeled so that they can deal with African terrain well, then in game if you drive off the pavement you're done.
The fused HE shells are bugged, its better to use the stock ones - at least for spg
its not bugged. haha
For me, it was End War, I was absolutely fascinated by the odd looking artillery
Also, 2:47 that made me laugh hard, because I know the feeling as that happens to me at times lmao
Ah, fellow endwar fan

Other than helicopter models needing a complete overhaul to fix, a quick solution (which also applies to planes) is to immediately kick the player out once the game classifies them as 'dead'. If you're in a tank and your gunner is the only crew member left alive, you're not allowed to keep firing because the game rules say you've been killed. Same logic should apply to helicopters and planes. Would literally take a few days to implement,
I love HE meme vehicles and Type 75 is my favorite one. I havent been able to play a lot since update dropped, but I will grind for G6 and see what does it look like. I guess you would have done better if you had HE
I have over 3000 h and started playing on early 2013. Type 75 SPH was by far the most fun i have ever had in War Thunder, that is until they fixed the proximity fuses 😭
My first impression was an End War game artillery piece.
The few times I've seen this thing are when I'm spawning in a TFB and the only G6 in the game gets it's first and last kill of the day.
The shell has a fuse distance so for longer shots you need normal HE
you dont it wont fuze when getting direct hits only if you miss
This format of video is pretty good, I hope you do more like this in the future in addition to your regular content
Gotta say I'm liking the far more candid videos. It's nice to know that you guys have plenty of wtf moments too.
This thing is like sniping with a shotgun. It either oneshots across the map or it tickles them for 3 damage at a distance of 3 meters.
So it is the sound of gravel that I've been hearing constantly. Makes it really hard to hear enemy tanks coming sometimes. I've also had more visual bugs since Danger Zone released than my other 400+ hours combined.
The gravel noise bug is a huge distraction. You can be stopped with engine off and have loud gravel crunching noise nonstop. I am amazed at the minor things they fix and leave massive sound bugs unfixed.
The G6 Rhino is also exactly what is the Basis for the Padilla Artillery in the Wizkids Clix game Mechwarrior; AOD.
Also, Overpressure and any mechanics that magic their way through armor is not a good mechanic....

OMG, Love the C&C Generals music in the background! Took me down the memory lane right into my childhood years. Loved that game so much.
On the 2S3M, I take primarily regular HE. The proxy round isn't very reliable as you found. It is nice for killing light tanks behind cover though.

Another great video!
The Command and Conquer game he showed in the video is Command and Conquer: Renegade and over the past few years Totem Arts, a fan team, has been making not one, but two fan games based upon it.
The first one being essentially a remaster of the original game (Renegade X) and the second one is exploring the Second Tiberium war though it is not released as of yet. (Renegade X: Firestorm)
Both are free to play and are at least worth a try.

I like the Cobra keeping stabilized flight w/o the tail rotor...amazing.

Makes the game feel more modern
Music is from command and conquer generals, USA side for those who are wondering
With such massive size and such gun, this must be some wheeled artillery piece
"Funny big boom vehicles" great way to put it.
I am gonna serve the hot take - last version of hullbreak (where they turned it off for solid shells and degradation of thin armor plates) was more fun than what we currently have
Every time bmp's eat up side shots from 150+mm HE because they got 4 mm skirts - I cry.
Command and conquer music in the background love it
The absolute suffering in Spook's voice xD
This probably some of the funniest war thunder content i have ever seen
there is also the heavy artillery in endwar that is based of the G6 but with twin barrels which make it looks even cooler :)
that m48 surviving all that shit just made me think "im fucking invincible!". Would a great meme specially with your response.
A Spookston video on my birthday, perfect.
I played C&C Renegade for years and years on n00bstories & Exodus. That was a game, Way ahead of its time. Its gameplay was unique and incredibly addictive and also spawned 2 standalone mods that were just as fun (A path beyond-red alert). But yeah, the G6 Rhino is the Mobile artillery of Renegade(even tough it was an M107/m110 in C&C). It was also overpowered as heck.
Try out renegade x fan made command conquer renegade with better graphics
I am Marine Corps artillery by trade, and I can assure you that this is the most unrealistic video in the game by far. They aren't even in the realm of realistic with how you are able to deploy this, however: it does look fun. For context, you could take a towed artillery piece like the M777, and strap it down to a flat bed truck, use it as a recon platform, and probably be a more realistic representation of real life. Maybe Call of Duty can start using mortar tubes as hip fire rocker launchers, or do what the Russians like to do and gripe a bunch of tanks down to the flight deck of an aircraft carrier and use it as a battleship. Maybe a transport chopper can start slinging howitzers, and they can fire them while flying as close fire support air-to-ground platforms. After you run out of ammo, you can then fly directly over the enemy and drop the howitzer directly on the target as a parting shot or something. Actually, I would totally play whatever game did that.
that heli had full yaw authority without a tail lol
"This thing is just making me sad"
*BRITAIN IN A NUTSHELL*
So fun fact, Breslau (the map) is coated in a thin layer of mud, found that out the hard way when I spawned a Striker and was the slowest vehicle on the battlefield.
the little bird in the beginning lol.
The G6 has became one of if not my favorite tank with the kv 2
this video is my entire war thunder experience in one video
Gaijin: "Okay so this vehicle was developed in a country with a lot of sand and was made for driving on it. Clearly it should have a top speed of 2km/h in sand!"
I tend to forget Spook uses C&C Generals music, often. Which is more amusing to me since the video with the newer Chinese MBT was a proper Generals reference.
God I need to replay that series.
Yo devs can you rework overpressure system so this shit can actually kill?
you can take 17 ammo (16 ready rack, 1 in breech)
Also the proximity fuse is actually for shooting at tanks behind cover, and not at planes
I personally don't see why we don't just get an artillery auxillery slot for vehicles already in the game were we can use the vehicles properly instead of some akward direct fire stuff.
lol I love hearing Spookston slowly going insane
The moment I heard the sentence I never really played command and conquer generals I wanted to we you suffer in any inhumane way possible . I still love your vids , keep up the good work .

That fucking "AAAAAAUUUUGGGGHHHHH" at the beginning xD
I feel your pain Spook, I can't hit any plane with my M19A1 when they are not looking straight at me.
Those bombs were the cherry on top 😂
When I played this vehicle, the HE rounds were consistent 95% of the time. The prox rounds are the problem.
glad you know command and conquer
I can hear Spookston losing more and more of his sanity with each video
the goofy ahh sound at the start vids gotta be a banger then
Fun fact: at 5 minutes when you got slowed down on a paved road it wasnt actually normal roads. That map had shitty meshes even on release so some roads were counted as soft terrain. Now they did fix it more or less completely but ig there still are a few spots
this video is me trying to grind out the ZTZ99A using its HE-FRAG rounds. Sometimes you kill something by hitting the wall behind it, sometimes you give it a direct hit and it only yellows the tracks.
wow, post more videos like these
When I started playing WT some years ago I remember HE as useless, now at least it does something.... sometimes
HE on anything small was always designed for infantry or unarmored vehicles, because they are high explosive fragmentation (a grenade), however on larger calibers, (typically 120mm or more, except for a couple of exceptions) the way the HE round is built is instead like an explosive charge or bomb- it is the pressure wave that kills.
It's been a while since I've heard Spookston this confused and frustrated lmao
that first 155mm round on the bmp should've mangled it beyond recognition
Oddly enough, as a former Field Artillery crewmember, most of our HE rounds were PD fused. When they weren't PD fused, we used a mechanical timed fuse. I cant speak for any shell types, only the US 155mm. We had 4 or 5 types of fuzes, but they all fell into one of two categories: proximity/ point detonating, and Mechanical, Time, Super Quick or MTSQ. With PD rounds, we had the option of point detonating or proximity detonation. Just a matter of flipping a switch. Almost always, we ran proximity as this would cause the round to detonate above ground, greatly increasing the kill range against soft and unarmored target. We only ran PD if we were directly engaging a target or if the FDC directed PD fusing.
That is the standard for most of the modern (1970s and younger) artillery projectile fuse.
It's chassis was also the base for Russian apc in Endwar, It looked awesomee
I can 100% agree on hating planes, I say just take them out of ground battles completely, it's enough that I have to keep a lookout for the camper who spent 30$ to put bushes all over his tank and hide in the woods, but then half the time your AA vehicles don't even focus on the aircraft, they just use there speed to rush onto a point so they can get killed 1 minute later trying to fight heavy tanks and crap
Generals soundtrack was a nice touch
The G6: I don’t like sand spookston it’s course and it’s rough and it gets everywhere
Spookston: wasn’t you design for sand T____T
My experience with the G6 has been very different. I'll admit the overpressure on light vehicles is a bit wonky but if you keep it at range (> 300m) you can top down almost any light/ifv/mbt with the proxy fuze shells, I've even taken it to top tier and killed M1s over ridges with it.
I'd recommend not using it in the front lines/middle of the map, you either want to sit back or try and get around the sides of things, that's how I've found it to be effective.
Side note: It is incredibly survivable against anything without autocannons. I've rarely found that it dies to overpressure from HEAT very rarely and the lack of armour + great number of crew makes it absorb a lot more hits than it should.
Fully agree with this guy, my experience with the G6 has been amazing, cupola shooting at close range is paramount to killing heavily armoured targets, past 300 meters you can devastate anything if you aim the shell correctly.
yeah kinda the same for me, even so when it's stock and you don't know how to handle it yet, it's quite painful to play
my friend: casually gets kills with the G6 without even trying.
yes consistency would make this game much better (mainly for ground vehicles and helis)
I like how it works for aircraft atm
