    I’m the guy from Alpena. I really appreciate that you took the time to thoroughly answer my question about shrubs for shade. I have most of the perennials that you mentioned. I actually prefer my shade gardeners because they have forced me to focus on foliage instead of flowers. You gave me some great ideas for shrubs. I’m heading to the nursery tomorrow to do some shopping. I just found out that my favorite nursery is open by appointment with lots of safety precautions. Thanks again!

    I'm a Landscape Designer with 30+ yrs experience. College was great but my first couple of jobs in the field learning and working with crews as a Horticulturist prepared me 100% more than just learning plant names in college. Getting down and dirty is essential! I went on to design and it has been the most wonderful career!! Now I'm 55, retired and since I'm old school (all drawings by hand, no CAD) enjoy freelancing, working in my own yard and traveling to places like Mackinac to soak in the gorgeous flower beds that people like yourself have designed. :)

    Thank you for emphasizing years of hard work, experience, and study before eventual mastery in landscape design. It's the answer to how to become great at anything, and it would be nice if more people gave that kind of sincerity, humility, and dedication to their vocations, themselves, and to the world via their offerings. The ''death of expertise'' is the death of full-hearted devotion and the heights of art and wisdom such devotion can produce.

    Hi Jack, I am new to your channel, thank you for these Q&A's! I have a question about hard, wet clay in my landscape. My husband and I recently moved into our new build home 3 years ago and of course we have tons of clay lying only 4 inches below our top soil. Every time we plant something new, we remove tons of clay from the hole, and do a 50/50 mix of the already existing top soil with potting soil. I also add some bone meal before I plant. We also have a thick layer of cedar mulch across all of our flower beds. I'm wondering if we should be adding gypsum now also to that soil mixture? How would you tackle all the clay underneath the top soil of a newly constructed lot? Thanks a bunch

    Vole maintenance in our yard is led by our Red Heeler, Rat Terrier, and Jack Russell who find them under the snow and then commit Vole-icide which usually occurs at the most inconvenient times to include bringing the corpses into the house!

    A week ago I bought 9 begonia plants from Lowe's Hardware in my town in North Carolina. I laid them out still in their pot on the dirt. When I lifted the pots to plant them the next day, I found land planarian flatworms under three pots. I didn't know what it was so I planted the begonias. I researched them; they're evil and grotesque. Any advice going forward in finding and eradicating these disgusting worms?

    Jack, how do you deal with rabbits in the garden if you don't have a dog? As you know, they multiply like ...rabbits! They do lots of damage to spring blooms and new shrubs and trees. My worst garden pests are rabbits, squirrels, and once in a while, voles. Any helpful advice you can give me would be much appreciated. Thanks. ~Margie

    When you do your hydrangea video, please include whether or not to trim down the bushes in the fall. I live in upstate New York and have two beautiful old wood bushes and keep hearing different views. Some years they are just beautiful and other years they’re not. I was told not to cut them back and to actually leave the flowers on through the winter instead of pinching them off. It looks awful, but it is suppose to protect them through the winter. Have you ever heard of this?

    Would love to hear a comparison of what you love and use in Florida, in place of your favorite Michigan plants. What ground covers do you love in Florida--instead of Sweet Woodruff? How do supertunias perform in Florida--are they just a spring annual? Etc. Live in Texas and would love to hear how you plant differently in Florida.

    I love these q&a’s. Darke Co Ohio here. I have a czechmark weigela. Last year it put off 4 stems and I left them to grow. The 4 stems leafed out but no flowers. Now those 4 stems have no buds and new leaves are forming at the ground level. I am afraid these new leaves will form into a few branches and nothing more. Can you tell me anything else about this plant. I feel guilty ripping it out, but I am tired of it not doing anything. Thank you! 💚🌿

    I have a question for your next Q&A if you can. I'm tired of mowing my small sloped front lawn which is incredibly green and thick, and is a beast to get through with my reel mower (works just fine on my flat back yard). My idea is just to use lots of plants. I'm in zone 7a. Any groundcover and low shrub ideas that won't block the view of the current back flower beds would be really appreciated. I don't want to use ivy or anything that would provide a haven to rodents. Thanks!

    • @JackBarnwellDesign
      @JackBarnwellDesign  4 года назад

      How high could the planting be, so as not to block the view of those back beds?

    • @gardeningjunkie2267
      @gardeningjunkie2267 4 года назад

      @@JackBarnwellDesign Well, I guess that would depend on if I wanted to switch over to purely taller plants a the back. Right now I use alot of dahlias, hollyhocks, roses, geraniums, asters, fountaingrass, celosia, gladiolus, gardenias... the list goes on. I really like the way it looks from the road. I'm afraid if I went over two or three feet max on the slope, I would lose alot of that.
