Tip: add a pinch or two of corn starch to your acrylic paint and it will thicken it up AND make the color so much more bold! It will also adhere better :) you can do the same thing with the inks….
@@margaretmathis4775 I use the bottled kind too… if they are too watery, just add a pinch, or a teaspoon of cornstarch… start with small amounts and add more if you need to… the only problem with this is that it will dry out quicker but you can add a drop or two of water or more paint if need be… good luck!!!
I use acrylic paint. One time i forgot to let it dry before pouring the resin. Funny enough you mentioned Alice in Wonderland, because it was Alice i did. Anyway, because I didnt let it dry Alice had no face 😱 because only the skin colour transferred. It looks super creepy 😳 I can tell you. I only use mica powder directly in the moulds if it's chameleon powder because in my option it looks better instead of mixing it into the resin ☺️
Hay just found you on RUclips. I wanted to thank you for your tip about micro brushes. I just got them today and I love them. P.S. don't pay any attention to the bad things people say.. You are a great teacher. THANK YOU. I'm from America and I feel you shouldn't pay attention to the BAD people. Keep up the good work.😀✨🇺🇸🍓🍑🍎
I started following you because I want to start my own resin crafts business. You are super helpful and informative, so thank you for posting. So far, every question I've Googled, one of your videos has come up as an answer 😂
That was a great experiment! I have been wondering if I could use acrylic paint on a mold before pouring and if it would ruin the mold. I'm very glad I found this video!
I've used the resin pigments mixed into resin, and that way they work brilliantly, I'm surprised the one you made with the magenta worked even that well. It might be a useful effect in some projects. Oil paint takes forever to dry, no wonder it was all messy still. I wonder how it would do, if you left it to dry for two weeks - then again, no-one has time to wait that long. Acrylics are the way to go!
Just saw your same comment on Krei's channel... Although she (they) do brilliant designs, it's disappointing that they don't care enough to answer questions!
I kept hearing about micro brushes... but Steve was the first person (channel) to actually list where I could get them. Now ... What did we ever do without them?!
That was useful info Steve. I love acrylic paints, they can be used for so many crafts to decorate or add details like on those cards. The card you used the resin pigment liquid on was lovely in its own way. A whole pack done like that would look really amazing I think. With a gilded edge it would look pretty impressive. What do you think?
oh my goodness!! thank you so much for this! I got the notebook cover molds and am looking at painting mandala's on them before I pour in black resin. now I know my plan to paint the lines in black and the colors in mica will work!
1) Thank you for using the micro brushes. I was unaware of their existence and I immediately paused your video and put some in my "shopping cart". 2) "Cleaning molds with tape?💡Genius. I've been struggling with using baby wipes because they they seem to just smudge the mess vs cleaning it. 3) You covered the variety of coloring options I planned on testing myself. You saved me time and money. Thank you. Sincerely, ~A new subscriber~ 🥳
I just found this video and im so thankful! I just ordered microbrushes ready! I have lots of different Mica so I'll be using those. I plan on making earrings, bracelets, necklaces, keyrings and magnets and hopefully start a small local business from home. I'm quite disabled physically and suffer from a heart condition also, so its not something I'll be able to do every day of the week but sit at a desk I bought ready, put my safety gear on, and see what in physically able to do 😀 I'm very excited! Even if i manage one thing at a time it's exciting to think ive found something I might actually be able to do! I have all the info I need written down and ill be starting next week. Thank you for your craft videos!!!
What if you mixed a little teeny bit of the resin (colored or uncolored?) with each type of colorant used? I wonder if the oil and ink would have behaved better?
I love your experiments, Steve! Thank you for taking the time to do them, and making videos for us. 😊 Considering how much JDiction UV resin I've got (thanks to you for that! Lol!), I would probably just use use opaque colorants with that and fill up the indentations with that, or use mica powders. I don't have any acrylic paints...maybe I should get some!
On the mica powder one. Use tape to clean it before the baby wipe to prevent accidental staining. Wait till the acrylic paint is fully cured before cleanings you can just peel it out.
Just love your experiments and learnd a lot from you 😊 But now I have a question: do you, or someone else know, if JDiction would ship to Germany, because I can't find some shipping notes. Maybe I just overlooked it...
Hi I tried dusting my mold with mica powder and and it stuck to the mold and didn’t transfer to my resin piece. What is the solution to this? Thank you in advance you are very inspirational.
Oil paints take a long time to cure. I wouldn't have poured resin on it for at least 24 hours. Longer if it's been applied thickly. Some oils take years to fully cure all the way through.
Questions for Anyone bc I need Help, lol I'm trying to use acrulic paint markers on my mold, but the paint won't stick to silicone. Anybody have any suggestions? primer? i've also seen on google a few resources saying don't use acrylic paint on your molds? anybody had any bad experiences with acrylic damaging their molds? What order would you do the mold release spray, if possible to still use with the acrylic paint pens? Thanks for the great video!
Steve, could you do a color fastness test of different color methods? Not all dyes, paints, inks are created equal & Ive been told the color of alcohol inks especially change & fade over time. Especially when exposed to UV light (sunlight) maybe you could make up a bunch of these cards using all different coloring methods, either making two of each or just taking before & after phots? But plop one of each outside in full sunlight & see what happens week to week to determine which are best to use in items that will be exposed to sunlight.
@@SteveMcDonaldArtsandCrafts Did you post a video in it yet? I’ll have to go take a look! I love all your little experiments & trial & errors. It really does help all of us learn & I appreciate it so much!
Steve, where do you get your micro brushes from. I looked in your USA Amazon store list and didn't see them. Was just wondering cause I like to order things I want especially if it can help the artist
The oil paint didn’t work because it takes a lot longer to dry than acrylic. With a layer of oil paint that thick it would take about 48 hours , give or take, to dry. I do paintings with oil, so I can tell you that the purpose behind this is to give an extended amount of time for workability and for blending.
Those resin inks are meant to be mixed into the resin first for details like that. You only put it directly on the mold if your detail is to allow it to spread
there's no way you let the oil pain dry - it takes weeks to fuly solidify unless you use somekind of speed drying medium (like liquin for exmpl) and than it also takes days... Nevertheless - interesting test.

Thanks so much for the tip. Tried acrylic paint before and hated how it came out
Will have to try that! But, my acrylic paints are the bottled kind, so very watery compared to the tube type.

Bullies abound everywhere anymore. Especially when they can sit, anonymously, behind their computers!
You could also use nail art dotting tools. They are forever reusable

Informative as always.
Another option is using the alcohol (or liquid) color in uv resin (or just using colored uv resin) in the recesses.
Great tips
So very helpful! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I’m glad I found your channel recently!👍
Thank you very much!❤️
You could also use a fine tipped marker.
This was so helpful! I am new to resin and your videos have given me so many tips. I am so grateful.
I like to use mica and paints in my molds too but I usually use nail polish! It works great and is fast-drying! Thanks Steve! ❤
As always, wonderful info! Will check out your video on making your colorants 😀. Thanks for all your great experiments. Keep them coming😀
Thanks for this! I’ve been wondering what is the best paint use. You just saved me a lot of time!
great video new follower!
Might be interesting to revisit the dye but poor it while it is still wet.
If you mixed the mica with alcohol and let it evaporate, would that work and be less messy?

What about cleaning up the micro powder using the tape? that seems like it would be more efficient and faster than acrylic.

Watercolor ground. Can be painted on most any thing. Then paint over with watercolor paints
i love your accent

I started making my own pastes but then was like well crap what do I do with other part of resin. It's expensive to waste
❤️❤️❤️
Maybe with the resin dye the indentations should be filled with the dye? Instead of painting it on.

The oil paint needed more time to dry
This was relaxing to watch. Especially after wasting money on Dr. Crafty epoxy resin more like Dr. Crappy. Stuff sets like rubber. ☹
Mix it in with your resin before using
