Tell Sarah that Tuomas actually had an idyllic childhood. Dead Boy and Ocean Soul are his alter egos. Whenever Tuomas was troubled, he would remember the happy boy he had been - the child now 'dead'. "Meadows of Heaven" are a reference to the countryside around his childhood home where he spent so much time. It was Tuomas as a young man who failed to find the love he craved. He has said that his songs are from the diary of his life. This song was about how he wanted to be remembered when he died - for his music. It's an apology to all those he felt he'd disappointed in life. The lines "wrote for the eclipse, wrote for the virgin,
died for the beauty, the one in the garden" are references to some of his earlier songs. But he eventually found Johanna , and the love he'd looked for for so long. That's when his music began to look outward towards the stars, instead of inwards to his pain.
Nice explanation with the alter ego perspective. I feel this song is also about growing into adulthood. Where the (innocent) inner boy had to "die" to make room for for an adult Tuomas that had to make tough life decisions where he could no longer please everyone. But the child-Tuomas will still remain in the music he wrote.
@@vogel2280 Yes, I think Tuomas mourned for the boy that was 'dead'.
Perfect. I think that's the best description of this song I've ever read.
@@andyl6742 Thank you.
Thanks for that explanation. Without some background I wouldn't be able to get the meaning of the lyrics except for the idea of them being rather sad. I remember again why I never liked reading Shakespeare.
Like in Shoemaker, Tuomas is quoting Shakespeare: “If you read this line, remember not the hand that wrote it”
That's why I like Sarah so much. She doesn't just say "I don't understand", she also justifies it very comprehensibly.
She wants to understand the whole song and especially the lyrics of Nightwish are not always easy to interpret.
Tom is the typical man in metal..."sounds good" that's it 😁. Of course, all the enthusiasm that is so entertaining for us is still on top. That's why you make a good team together. And so sympathetic. At least I think so.
Btw. The little boy is Tuomas. His story.
Loved your reaction. Short note on Finnish folk lore... Swans are the escorts to an afterlife. The poem is a deep dive into Tuomas' wishes about what he might say to the people he loves (and doesn't love) at his possibly untimely passing... Ciao!
And Tuomas was just over 20 years old when he wrote this song. Your wife is just one of the most amazing woman there is, you are a great couple and I love watching you listening for Nightwish. Yes a few 🪴🌿🪴 would be so nice. A poster of Nightwish behind the plants is just 🙂 👌
'And you, I wish I didn't feel for you anymore' always gets me. So emotional and so beautiful, it's hard to listen to and magnificent at the same time.
Everytime I hear this. Can't help but think how many billions of people lived out their entire life. Never knowing their passion or even what they are good at. To busy just trying to survive day to day.
After all these years, after all the great stuff Tuomas wrote since, this still remains my No. 1 Nightwish song. It hit hard in 2000, and still does today. Particularly this specific performance.
Should be added to the big 3 in my opinion. If this song does not touch your heart and soul YOUR DEAD
The Dead boy and the Poet and the ocean soul are one and the same - he writes 95% of all things Nightwish .
Sarah got it right. It's TUomas.
Simply one of the best of all time for me. Check out the background why this one means so much to Tuomas.
Tuomas is the Dead Boy, he is writing this song, almost like a suicide note or death of his inner child. Things he would like to say if he were to die to his loved ones. The part, "And you, I wish didn't feel for you anymore" I believe was to Tarja. Sing what you can't say, forget what you can't play. Tuomas is a real deep guy, but often keeps his emotions buried deep and lets them out in his music. Tuomas often refers to himself in lyrics as, Songwriter, Poet, Ocean Soul, and in this one The Dead Boy. Everything I (wished for in the Night) Nightwish? He is a deep guy, that often expresses himself through his songs.
I soooooooo love this song, thnx for reacting to it
Beautiful song thankyou for doing this one.
Is Sarah allergic to the cat? She just answered my question. The crane is the mobile camera for filming the concert. That is one possible meaning for this song. Tuomas had a wonderful childhood growing up in remote Kitee Finland. Even if he was somewhat isolated and did not have many childhood friends. It makes more sense coming from Tuomas and also due to the line "The sweet piano writing down my life". This is obviously a song directly about Tuomas. The verses are recalling his songs and the thought process involved in creating them. Here is what I found as far as a probable song meaning.
This is a very emotional and personal song for Tuomas. The small child's voice represents Tuomas' inner child speaking. When asked what this song was about "Tuomas has said about this song, that it's about if he were to die tomorrow, what would he want to say to everyone that he loves, and that love him..."
A theoretical unexpected early death.
Notice the small boy on the screen reaching out to the flying swans on the screen. The swan is the guide to the afterlife in Finnish mythology. He is reaching out to implore them to take him with to the other side. A beautiful song filled with sadness from an unfulfilled destiny.
These are the spoken words by the small boy (The Dead Boy's Poem)
"If you read this line, remember not the hand that wrote it - don't remember Tuomas - Just his poetry
Remember only the verse, songmaker's cry the one without tears
For I've given this its strength and it has become my only strength. - His relationship with music and words
Comforting home, mother's lap, chance for immortality - Rural Finland, loving parents, will his music live on?
where being wanted became a thrill I never knew - finding fulfillment from appreciation for his music
The sweet piano writing down my life" - Tuomas put himself into his music and lyrics
"Teach me passion for I fear it's gone
Show me love, hold the lorn
So much more I wanted to give to the ones who love me - His family and the fans who loved him and his music
I'm sorry - sorry he will no longer give us fans his musical creations
Time will tell (this bitter farewell)
I live no more to shame nor me nor you
And you... I wish I didn't feel for you anymore..." - The pain and disappointment he feels for letting us down
A lonely soul
An ocean soul
I have been waiting for this reaction XD Extremely good song and so deep... A touching song that only Nightwish can present like this :)
Goosebumps every damn time, and never a regret :)
All the best to you guys!
Maybe for Sarah you could find lyrics for the song and she could read them BEFORE you react to the song since it is very important for her. I would personally not recommend looking at lyrics separately at the same time as watching the video. People tend to miss things going on or the emotion in the video when they spend too much time analyzing the lyrics at the same time. Just my thoughts, great reaction guys!
Exactly, i noticed that when people started to do this (reading lyrics) they hardly watching the actual video anymore. It's distracting.
You are correct! Great tip! I need to start doing that also. :)
That backdrop shows little boy reaching for swans. In Finnish mythology swans delivers souls to Tuonela (Death's Domain)
Top couple…very nice wife…appreciate very much your reaction..and top song!!!!!
Great reaction. I see you survived watching Devil And The Deep Dark Ocean without Sarah. Or doesn't she know yet? 😉 Stay safe 🤘✌
It’s never wrong to follow the lyrics of Nightwish songs while listening. Tuomas writes so multilayered lyrics that everyone gets something out of them. Yes, have some plants in the background, Tuomas loves nature, plants fits perfectly with theme Nightwish.
The lyrics 4 Sarah
I live no more to shame, nor me, nor you
I'm sorry
Born from silence, silence full of it
A perfect concert, my best friend
So much to live for, so much to die for
If only my heart had a home
Sing what you can't say
Forget what you can't play
Hasten to drown into beautiful eyes
Walk within my poetry, this dying music
My love letter to nobody
Never sigh for better world
It's already composed, played and told
Every thought, the music I write
Everything, a wish for the night
Wrote for the eclipse, wrote for the virgin
Died for the beauty, the one in the garden
Created a kingdom, reached for the wisdom
Failed in becoming a god
Never sigh for better world
It's already composed, played and told
Every thought, the music I write
Everything, a wish for the night
If you read this line
Remember not the hand that wrote it
Remember only the verse
Songmaker's cry, the one without tears
For I've given this its strength
And it has become my only strength
Comforting home, mother's lap, chance for immortality
Where being wanted became a thrill I never knew
The sweet piano writing down my life
Teach me passion, for I fear it's gone
Show me love, hold the lorn
So much more I wanted to give to the ones who love me
I'm sorry
Time will tell, this bitter farewell
I live no more to shame, nor me, nor you
And you
I wish I didn't feel for you anymore
A lonely soul
An ocean soul
A lonely soul
An ocean soul
So much more I wanted to give to the ones who love me
Time will tell
A lonely soul
An ocean soul
A lonely soul
An ocean soul
floor was very sick , the flu
The studio version really makes you feel the dark tone of this song. It’s the best version. I never say that about a Nightwish song.
This is sad song but at the same time strangely uplifting .... That was beautiful !!!!! NWSU
Arrived too late to watch the Wacken full show reaction, I was watching Floors Football National Team at the European Championships, unfortunately didn't get well :(
And now only a little part is available. Luckely you posted this amazing song.
Yes, I would have prefered the Netherlands to win today and be kicked out later by us germans. ;-)
@@HWaii Looks like die britische got the last laugh
@@jerrychance3909 Yes, seems so. 😅
"The sweet piano writing down my life"....Now: who writes music for Nightwish?Who is the maker and creator of all things that are great?Who is the composer?Who plays the piano and is writing down his life? Many clues for you. That's TUOMAS who made this song. His letter to everyone after he is dead. His own very personal thoughts. If you listen carefully, not hard to figure out. Also camera shows A LOT of him in this song. Also: Not Thomas, it's Tuomas but you were close enough. 😃 I know it's hard for Americans.
Tom probably cant grip the word Nuances Sarah ..lol...j/k
Plants or Nightwish stuff? How about some Nightwish tulips? Floor showed them in her last Storytime ;)
ruclips.net/video/dnFMn-P6cn4/видео.html
U need NW In the Wall maybe Emppu poster and Floor of Course
When Floor jumps up an octave near the end of this song, it gives me chills ever single time. It may be my favorite moment of her time in Nightwish.
"
Also, it's Buey-nos Aye-race. Okay, not quite. But that's closer than what you said. You're killing me, Smalls!
Oh my gosh. You're killing me, Smalls! I love that. I say that sometimes and no one know what the heck I'm talking about!
They are swans in the background picture. In Finnish mythology swans carry the souls of the dead to the afterworld. Tuomas is the child. Tuomas is Oceanborn. Tuomas said "This is the most personal song I've ever written. My
testimony for the whole world. With this song I want to apologise
everyone who deserves my apology. It also makes an "I don't care"
-statement to them who deserve it. The song is also about what Nightwish
means and has meant to me. It's all, without it I'm dead. I have
created it and it has created me. When I pass away, this song's lyrics are of what I wish to be remembered. An Ocean Soul." - before he wrote The Poet and The Pendulum.... Did Tarja ever understand that? (edit: Sarah, for Tuomas headbanging see "Fantasmic Part 3" !!!!)ruclips.net/video/L08l0QbOQ78/видео.html
....and you can also see HOW YOUNG they are in that one! This always "takes me back" to my young and rebellious days...he,he...
this one and meadows of heaven are the best nightwish ballads.
Thank you for doing my favorite Nightwish song. 🙏🏻
It’s so beautiful and Tuomas’ most personal song.
To truly appreciate Tuomas and Floor it's time to listen to The Poet and the Pendulum but Sarah must be there to hold your hand.
One of the most beautiful and haunting Nightwish songs, served up with the lovely goddess Floor. What more can you ask for?
Nightwish merch 100%
This is so beautiful 💕 💫 FLOOR Is always AMAZING THANK YOU SO MUCH. Love from the Netherlands 🇳🇱 💫 🇳🇱 🙋🏼 😘
Incredible Nightwish song even for Nightwish. I have taken my time over these last years in listening to new Nightwish songs. Didn't actually hear this until a few months ago. It has become one of my favorites.
There are very deep and precise explanations in the comments - but keep in mind that Tuomas want the listener to make his/hers own thoughts, based on the individual memories and life experiences. And it's here (imho) Tuomas's real genius shines - being able to write poetry in ways the are open to individual interpretation. And it simultaneously opens for Floor's coloring of the lyrics, and her interpretation - and she gets the freedom to do it from Tuomas....
That's pure geniusity - from both!!
Here are the lyrics to Dead Boy's Poem
Born from silence, silence full of it

A lonely soul... An ocean soul...
Hi Tom and Sarah. Loved your reaction....again. Hope you're both well.
My favorite song.
Tuomas is pronounced Too-aw-mass
I’m curious as to why one allergic to cats would have one. 🙀 I have two. Great commentary. I believe a compromise is in order. One plant for each piece of Nightwish memorabilia. Welcome to the jungle. 😜🤘
My partner is allergic too! We had two Norwegian Forestcats. They were not allowed in his office room and in the bedroom. His allergy symptoms are depending on the breed. Heavier symptoms by British Shorthair!😀
@@JaneDoe-ge5di My Son is allergic so I got a pair of Siberian Forest Cats, which are as close to hypoallergenic as you can get. They don't bother him at all. 😀😻😻
@@skeezesmith7954 it s really weird that it is so different from breed to breed! Perhaps they are not so allergy-inducing because the furr and skin of the forestcats is more oily? Hope your son s symptoms aren t worse?
@@JaneDoe-ge5di That's just it. My Son has no symptoms because of this breed. Most, not all, people are allergic to the 'Fel D 1' protein in the cat's saliva. When they groom it gets on their fur. Siberians Fel D 1 levels are extremely low.
That s great to know! Loved my boys! They were so gentle by looking so wild! Stay well and all the best👍😺Good Night!
Especially for Sarah, listen to the NW song Swanheart I would recommend to find out what the lyrical link is with this song. Tuomas is struggling with his being, his earth existence and alter ego more than once in his life and you can find it in several of his compositions. Also the tension in his earlier relationship with the first vocalist Tarja is interesting to figure out in some of his songs.
That smile ha ha ha, great reaction
When you lose a child you feel everything.
i don't think anyone would crucify Ms Sarah if she had the lyrics pulled up on her phone so she could follow along. you won't be "spoiled" on anything from just reading the words.
Hi! It's not always easy to understand what Tuomas really means in his songs, some songs have double or more meanings, some songs can be interpreted by you, what you understand or what you feel or think about or what it says to you but most songs are clear. I hear Nightwish since 1997 and there are some songs i don't know what he would say or what he really means til today. But it's not so importand for me. You can found many answers in the net or when you talk with other fans, what they understand, what they feel or what a song means to them. Sometimes he only will make people think about some problems in the world. But anyway, i like that when it's a little poetic and not clear in the first moment or after first time hearing. But i like this song, you two have right, they always sounds great. I would wish my english where better, it's sometimes hard for me writing what i really would say. Thanks for another nice reaction. Greetings to you two!
There are no words for Floor, she is not of this world.. beyond the stars.
There isn't a language barrier: it is written and sung in English.
"My favorite thing in life is to play Devils Advocate," What a lucky guy....
Nightwish don't just feel the beat.......they are so close they feel each other's heartbeat
Tom, since Sarah is very analytical (like my wife) I think she would really benefit from studying the lyrics of a song a couple times right before actually listening to the music. That way she would not feel she was missing out on the context of the song.. Free to enjoy the music with its context already fairly understood. Just a thought. Long term NW fans already know the plots and sub-plots of every song. They don't have to try to keep up. Frustrating for people we both know.
Kitty! The last part of this song always gives me goosebumps on my goosebumps.
well I don't know about feeling "down" but it doesn't look like you've reacted to "The Poet and The Pendulum" yet and it's pretty much guaranteed you will feel something, but as with this one Nightwish might have some dark things to say but they will never leave you down there like with this one offering hope at the end. And as with this one I really recommend (if you haven't done it already) that you research and check the backstory on Poet before watching, it's very personal and they do have a lyric video so you can more closely follow the story.
Hiya. Floor LOVES plants. Stay safe. All the best to you.
The discussion at the end was the best part 😂😂😂 kidding 😎🤟🏼
Love it
💜
You have to please let Sarah react with you to every Nightwish song.
As she accurately pointed out, their songs are complex and filled with nuances. She brings a lot of analytical divges into the songs and you the very raw emotional connections .......same as me
Great team guys
You need to get one of those fake palm trees that dance to music !🌴
For me, it is not so much the words.
It's the way Floor sings, with so much emotion, that gets me and when
you link it with her graceful movements...
Wow...😥😥😥😥 the Goddess of Empathy gets you....good
One of the Epic 4..for me that is..
You could always get some Nightwish tulips :)
Floor is majestic once again...no hyperbole
How many times does she have to mention not having lyrics before this guy reacts to videos with lyrics 😂 What a smooth brain.
You could have the lyrics pulled up on a cellphone to glance at during reactions :)
Such a beautiful song.
But then everyone would think that she's busy texting!
"I don't think I can feel down when listening to this band." Oh... oooh...
'Poet and the pendulum' will teach you better, dude.
If at some point you want to react to Poet and the pendulum as well, make sure you read up on the background to this song before - knowing about it will help you understand the deep meaning of this song. I recommend the Wembley 2016 video with the lyrics in it.
Love your reactions, thanks man!
Nice cameo!🐱🐈
Hard to get lyrics from a first listen, especially a live show.. But, you don't want to get distracted from the performance video trying to figure out the lyrics.. I watch a live videos because there's a lot going on. Seeing a reactor looking off to the side, or not making an expression when something in the video is going on.. kind of bums me out, because I can kind of tell they didn't notice because they were busy reading lyrics..
Floor is so mesmerizing! Her dance moves and hair being blown by the "Floor" fan are fantastic.
Hi it steve in uk again hope u both good im huge nightwish fan .got all cds dvds rareities.what a great songthis is.it amazing powerful .glad u both like it .how do i become your patreon

Nightwish merch... Show her who's boss lmao. Great Reaction.
You need a big LED screen 😂😍
The best version is live in Tampere year 2000. Most genuine and great. This is also good though.
You should react to Tarja's version. If you haven't you should react to Meadows of Heaven with Anette. You should have Sarah with you. It's a Beautiful song..
Someone had commented on another reactors video that this is the only song where Emppu doesn't smile.
Yeahhhhhh 🔥⚡🔥⚡ lyric Monitor 👌😅👌🎸🥁🎤🎻🎹.....Great Great.......and what about ..AND/ AND ........yeahh green plant too. .. think about it !!! 😉......btw...love You both .....huge 💪💜🦁💪💜🦁💪💜🦁💪💜
"comforting home, mother's lap, chance for immortality, where being wanted became a thrill i never knew"
Every note, every key change and every drum beat of this song is designed to make you make you weep. This is Tuomas' summary of the song:
"This is the most personal song I've ever written. My testimony for the whole world. With this song I want to apologise everyone who deserves my apology. It also makes an "I don't care" statement to them who deserve it. The song is also about what Nightwish means and has meant to me. It's all, without it I'm dead. I have created it and it has created me".
Tuomas is the child...
You can pull up the lyrics as subtitles on many nightwish videos. They are quite helpful. I think there is lyrics on this particular video.
Check out creek mary's blood with Tarja and John two-hawks 😉
Man just do it for your wifeee!! It REALY DOES help with Nightwish to have lyrics, she's actualy right. It's out there, videos with captions.
the ''Human Nature'' sign for the background....
Hey Tom! I like a lot of your reactions, especially Nightwish reactions. I suggest you a great Finnish band you should make a reactionvideo. That is Sonata Arctica. Here are some good pieces: Raven and Wolf, Full Moon or Tallulah. I am sure that you like them. Please!
This song was my intro to Nightwish. The album version, in 2012, not this version with Floor. This version has so much more emotion in it for me.
Maybe search for the lyrics online and read them before or have it available during your reaction. I'm the same way that I don't hear the words clearly in a song especially Tuomas writes them in a poetry format. It really helps to look it up first. Good work guys!
I love how Floor starts quietly, gradually ramping it up through the song.
Up to 20% of the population are "Highly sensitive", mostly artists, musicians, writers, etc.
Tuomas and Floor definitely are,
from the way the others react and produce such amazing unified sound, I guess they are too.
It might have been difficult for Tuomas as a child,
feeling things differently from others, being misunderstood,
even though happy in the family with loving parents.
He has said it is up to us to interpret how we want, and get a relevance to us.
Love how Marco was jamming with Troy after the quite bit.
Floor ramping up again.
Cave plants?
Floor is totally from another dimension... ❤
Let your wife have two side shelves of plants and you can have the center wall/area for NW gear/mural. Compromise is a wonderful thing.
Plants!
Tom, you know this by now, boy, poet, dreamer, writer or anything connected with the ocean, are all Tuomas pseudonyms. Nothing is ever wasted with Tuomas lyrics or backdrops, but you have to really dig deep. The song is his self-written epitaph/obituary. Tuomas has always said he is a man with a boys heart, it's fairly obvious he was a gifted and therefore isolated child. It seems his parents did not recognise his character either, but I have struggled with "failed at becoming a God", maybe the full recognition by his parents, I don't know.
Tuomas has said he does not explain lyrics, you have to decide, just like a master work painting, you have to see in it what you believe, he likened it to interviewing Da Vinci about the Mona Lisa, if we knew everything behind that, he says, the magic and attraction would be lost.
"Walk within my poetry, this dying music. . . . . . . . . ." Yes?
The boy imploring the swans in the backdrop is Tuomas and swans, in Finnish culture, carry you off to the afterlife. You can look at The Swan of Tuonela by Sibelius too.
There's two bits of Shakespeare in it, Sonnet 71 and 72, you can find them here:
If you read these lines remember not the hand that wrote them. is from Sonnet 71
I Live no more to shame, nor me, nor you is from Sonnet 72.
Tuomas said it's the Mother of all Nightwish songs. He said "This is the most personal song I’ve ever written. My testimony for the whole world. With this song I want to apologise everyone who deserves my apology. It also makes an “I don’t care” -statement to them who deserve it. The song is also about what Nightwish means and has meant to me. It’s all, without it I’m dead. I have created it and it has created me. When I pass away, this song’s lyrics are of what I wish to be remembered. An Ocean Soul."
A great reaction to a very poignant and beautiful song Tom, thank you.
Come on Girl wake Up The first time you lost out and Tom got it
They didn't understand the meaning of the song, it's LITTLE THUOMAS always composes dreams, feelings beyond what can be explained, it's a beautiful ballad that moves me to tears. Nightwish's lyrics are not read, they are felt (without speaking fluent English) I understand their meaning. Read with your ears, dream about music and you will understand each song.
Still my favorite song from Nightwish
You don't want to say Buenos Aires correctly? The place where I am from? HOW DARE YOU. Lol.
