The Quartz Crisis of the 1970s sounded the death knell for many iconic Swiss brands that had produced some fantastic watches. One such company was Nivada Grenchen, a brand that had existed since 1926, and produced a wide range of distinctly cool tool watches.
For me, Nivada Grenchen’s demise was one of the great losses of the Quartz Crisis. Which is why I was absolutely thrilled when the brand was revived back in 2018. Whilst I’m not aware of any connection to the original brand besides the name, the new Nivada Grenchen understands the importance of making use of the heritage of that name.
Its models are all near-exact reissues of classic Nivada Grenchen watches. One of my favourites is the Chronomaster Aviator Sea Diver, which is available in a mind-boggling array of dial options, and with the choice of either a manual or automatic movement. So when Nivada got in touch to offer me a watch in exchange for reviewing it, I had a hard time choosing which to go for!
In the end, I opted for the Orange Boy “SL” with a manual-wind movement on a beads of rice bracelet, the retail price for which is CHF1,795. This translates to approximately £1,481 or $,1843 at the time of writing.

For all of us with a smaller wrist this is a delightful proposition if you are into the vintage athletic.
Exactly! A lot of chronographs are too big for me, which puts me off them.
Pleasant and informative review. Looking forward to getting hands on with NG at the Windup Watch Fair in Chicago next month.
I'm glad you enjoyed it! I'm sure you'll like the Nivadas when you see them in person.
I ordered this watch in the orange boy variant. My god I’m so impatient right now. I dislike sellita but seeing that this has a nice manual variant with 68hrs reserve power I felt for it. I’m pretty positive to how this look on my almost 8” wrist
Nice and honest review
Cheers mate! 🙏🏻
I bought all three Nivadas. The Chronomaster came defective (and was not new either). I was supposed to prove this with a video, which I did. Then happened: NOTHING MORE.
The "service center" in Hong Kong was said to be unable to send me a back label, so I had to have the supposedly new watch repaired at my own expense.
I'm not even completely sure whether the watch also contains the specified movement, because two comparison watches react completely differently.
Looks a lot like the Tudor Heritage Chrono. The old one that came in grey or blue.
