True story. That’s Allen Woody on bass. I was in the Marriot Hotel at LaGuardia Airport in Queens the night he died. I was with my girlfriend at the time ( now my wife of 19 years). We grew up near there. It was August 2000. EMS and the FDNY were there. I heard from someone that it was a rock musician that died. Someone said the Allman brothers. I’m a huge fan. I ran around frantic to find who it was. I found a fireman I knew from my neighborhood- also a fan. He was very upset. Said to me “ bro it’s Allen Woody “. I went to my knees in grief. My girl didn’t understand. She couldn’t. It’s an Allman Brothers thing.

Would never want anyone to endure the griefs these guys did, though many do.. the soul of hurt loss and resolve is always present in their music

@@stephenedwards5038 They lost Duane Allman and Berry Oakley within a year of eachother in the same town , the same way , in the early 70’s. Two all time greats. They still went on to produce several fantastic albums. When Dickie Betts left the band and Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks became the lead guitarists they were even better.
Phenomenal band. Nobody can make music like that anymore. Nobody knows how.

I saw him play live for the last time at a music festival on the Hudson River in Peekskill/Croton NY area that Gov’t Mule headlined. He died about a week after that. It is possible that Gov’t Mule played another gig after that. Definitely one of his last live gigs.

That Mule show at Croton Point Park on Aug. 19, 2000 was Woody's (and the original Gov't Mule trio's) last show.
After that show, Woody headed to spend what would be the last week of his life on Lake Sunapee, NH, where his wife Jenny's family still has a place. He died in the early morning hours of Aug. 26th, in a NYC hotel room. He was waiting overnight for his flight home to Nashville the next day.

@@jonathanrobinson1544 thank you for setting the record straight Jon. I always wondered if The Mule played any more shows with Woody after the Croton show. I used to enjoy seeing Gov’t Mule play The Chance in Poughkeepsie back in the mid 90’s. Then later starting in 2006 I would see Dickey & Great Southern play there a couple times. Then anywhere Dickey & Great Southern played like the Middletown, the Poconos, Atlantic City, etc…. I wish others would recognize how great Dickey was. I loved Dickey, Warren & Woody in the Bros. but for some reason others must insist that the duo of Warren Haynes & Derek Trucks were the best. Which of course is an opinion. One that I definitely do not share. But I saw the Allman Brothers during the Shades & Back Where it All Begins & HORDE tours. I never saw dick-less Bros. which is what I have to refer to them as without Dickey. But I have listened to & own several Dick-less Bros. recordings which fall short. Why can’t people understand how pivotal Dickey was to the Allman Brothers? All his years of service, the great songs he wrote & his beautiful style of play. Then nephew Derek comes into the band & moves Warren from slide to Dickey’s roll & adds his lame Indian licks which are pretty much out of place, do not enhance the song or music, & gets all these amazing accolades. Wrote virtually no material & yeah cool Uncle Butch has no use for Dickey ever again. I guess you can say I was & will always be on Team Dickey!
