      I am not sure that the argument is compelling. Is there even a single Trump voter anywhere who thought to their self, "Trump is going to destroy the integrity of the American republic and damage the fairness of subsequent elections, but he really is a rational and competent economic manager, so I will vote for him"? There is of course a hierarchy of priorities for each voter, but the implication seems to be that Trump voters are engaging in exceptional cognitive dissonance in both seeing Trump as a reckless monster and as a rational technocrat.

    • @smugdug
      @smugdug Месяц назад

      @@stefanklietsch5500 Typical echo chamber misunderstanding of the average Trump voter. Trump voters don't see him as a monster. They see him as a hero to bring back what once was. Not even Obama had that kind of devotion and admiration in 2008.

      @stefanklietsch5500 Месяц назад +1

      @@smugdug You have just confirmed my point. Trump supporters did not believe or process the argument that he is a threat to democracy, therefore the results are not explainable in terms of Maslow’s hierarchy.
      *Why* they did not believe the criticisms is a different matter. But this is a case of competing worldviews between the two halves of the electorate on what constitutes reliable information and what does not; it's not a case of two different sets of voters making different conclusions from the same set of facts.

      @@stefanklietsch5500 Keep telling yourself that.
      Trump voters voted for him because they love him. Swing voters gave him the presidency because they're broke and sick of insane progressive policies.

      @@stefanklietsch5500So true. It’s been evident for a long time that with the move away from mainstream media (tv and newspapers) as the source of reliable, vetted information (think Walter Cronkite era) to 24-hour news opinion networks more interested in ratings and worse, highly biased social media sources (RUclips and podcasts), that people can no longer agree on the facts.
      Trump voters may in fact see him as a threat to democratic norms but they like that. We also know that the average American voter is woefully ignorant about civics having been fed a steady diet of corporate propaganda all their lives.

    You also forgot to talk about immigration, it was the top concern for voters in the US after the economy. Latinos who were voting for Trump said that they were sick of the Dems handling of immigration, and that Latinos were taking the blow back from those poor decisions. They were more against immigration than white voters were, and I suspect something similar is happening with East Indian voters in Canada.

    Just watched the show a little later in the day. I think it important if you are looking for lessons from the US election to stop using the word progressive incessantly would be a good one.. I am progressive and wholistic in my thinking but I don’t need to use she/her in my signature block or support DEI hiring when unwarranted etc. etc. I am a conservative. When you say progressive to me I am reminded of the CBC radio comedy show wherein the comedian used to mimic Adrienne Clarkson and say “ I’m Adrienne Clarkson and you’re not”. I don’ believe liberals or NDP are progressive. They are liberals or NDP. I was an advisor to sr. bureaucrats and a cabinet Minister and when you think and act like you’re better than others by dubbing yourself progressive there is a put down in that and Trump voters gave the “Dems” the dirty back door.

    I don't believe that abortion is the most pressing issue for women, but it's presented as the main issue that concerns women. It's certainly important. As someone who has had an abortion, miscarriage and two live births, I would not vote for someone based on that issue.. I may consider taking more responsibility for my sexual encounters. This reminds me of a time when I marched for peace beside someone who angrily yelled, 'What do we want, when do we want it?' Upon seeing the anger in this person's face, I didn't participate in another peace march/protest. However, I did march in Toronto for Henry Morgentaler before I gave birth to children whom I raised on my own.

    Part of the issue with speaking to men.... Women dominate culture/social issues. They make the overwhelming majority of consumer decisions and thus are marketed and catered to. (Companies have figured out that women enjoy themselves some sexism, and that stuff sells.) Misandrist attitudes can be seen everywhere, and are so accepted. Meanwhile, our PM was elected by women on policies that would largely benefit women, and a carbon tax(that disproportionately negatively impacts men). Then men have to turn around and listen to some lady complaining about how the A/C at her office being too cold is part of the patriarchy, and about how all men are trash all day.(Meanwhile he's outside in the blazing heat on top of a building). This then get's attached to the left as women and women's issues are usually associated with the left. The problem isn't with identity politics, it's with identity reductionist politics that intentionally omit class. Identity reductionist politics simply don't reflect the real world. The use and belief in them has lead to left parties being perceived as constantly demonizing men, and/or working against them. Even when the strategy blows up in their face. It's, what's wrong with men? Men need to change and do better?
    Actually, if you're a leftist activist it's YOU that has to do better. You cannot run around for 364 days a year talking about how crappy a group of people are, and then expect them to vote for you on the 365th

    The shift manifested in the US election isn't going to be understood by former comms staffers trading in vibes and feelings. People don't want "messages" reframed in economic terms; they want economic problems *fixed*, and soon. Rent. Inflation. Precarious, poorly paid work. No retirement security. Student debt. Real estate prices. Skyrocketing inequality. This pod dropped the ball. Same old. The discussion should have been about what bold policy, specifically, Dems should have run on, and that should be contemplated now by Canadian politicians. You sounded like a demonstration of the thing you were trying to unpack.

    Sex polarization is deeply toxic for a polity. It should be a cross-partisan imperative to avoid splitting into The Party Of Men and The Party of Women, which means that Conservatives should look into how to appeal to women as much as Liberals/Dippers try to appeal to men.

    House prices grew by 25% since Biden took office. Young voters can't vote for that without giving up on any hope of owning a home, let alone comfortable retirement. Give a young man a choice between the hope of owning a home with Trump or protecting abortion with Harris, and you won't be surprised by how the demo breaks.

    • @stefanklietsch5500
      @stefanklietsch5500 Месяц назад +1

      But that begs the question: how did any young man anywhere get the idea in their head that a Trump presidency is the way to get housing prices back down?

    • @itcamefromthedeep
      @itcamefromthedeep Месяц назад

      @stefanklietsch5500 Cutting illegal migration cuts population growth, which reduces pressure on housing.
      An end to the flood of new labor at the bottom of the economic ladder puts upward pressure on wages at thd bottom, and wage inflation exceeding shelter cost inflation makes housing more affordable.
      Up here in Canada these issues are too acute for anyone but the aristocracy to ignore, though up here a lot of it is non-permanent residents rather than people here illegally (though there is also a lot of that).
      Trump won't make building easier. Nobody in the Euro-Anglosphere seems to have decisively cracked that nut.

    I don’t know the Preston Manning of whom Kory speaks. The Preston Manning who lives in Alberta has had his nose in the public trough to the tune of almost $250,00 to write a report on COVID that he had already written and that largely reflected his personal views.
