SCREEN BURN ON MY 5 YEAR OLD B7 LG OLED, WILL LG HELP? March update see description below

  • INIUPDATE March 12th
So, after corresponding with LG UK Customer support, was initially offered a new panel swap etc for £250. However, as I live in Jersey(Island between France and the UK) they couldn't do this swap and so have said that if I can find a firm locally they will reimburse(against receipt ) me the cost of the panel and I will just have to pay for the technicians time etc to swap the tv modules from the old panel to the new panel. Local authorised LG TV repair firm contacted and arrangements to be made for collection etc once they give me an approximate costing.
    UPDATE April 3rd
So after contacting the only authorised repair company, I was informed by them that they would charge me £70 to come out and look at the tv to diagnose the fault. After several e mails to LG highlighting my total disbelief to this, as clearly LG and I know the panel is faulty with screen burn etc, I again contacted the repair company ready for a verbal fight, only to be told that they have now contacted lg with my reference number and will arrange for LG to send a new panel directly to them and they will then charge me the labour to swap the modules etc from old tv to new tv. So they have seen sense and won't charge me the £70 diagnostic fee. Just waiting for news on the panel availability now.
    ORIGINAL POST FEBRUARY......The story
I have several LG OLED TV's in my house. I am aware of brightness settings etc and pixel refreshing and all that, BUT, wasn't enough to stop my b7 panel getting the dreaded burn in. I've had Pioneer Plamsa TV's prior to these and after 9 years use never had any issues and the LG's replaced them.
I know the panel is out of warranty but in this day and age I don't expect having to buy a new TV after 5 years.
So folks I have started corresponding with LG to see if they can offer me ,as a loyal customer, something to keep me with the Brand, which I really do like and sort the panel out.
I am happy (kind of!) to even pay for a panel and swap the components across as its a 20 minute job.
The LG experience has been great so far and it was a close call between the Samsung LED or whatever they are called and the LG OLED.
Not sure if I would buy an OLED style TV again due to this problem, but the Blacks are amazing and off centre the viewing quality is very good.

Thank you for sharing. After over 5,200 hours on my B7 oled I also have bad burn in. Other places will have you believe 'extreme' use cases cause it, but these 2017 models seem to be susceptible. I have the exact same problem with the C7 and so do my parents. TVs purchased in 2017 7,000 hours on the TV. LG is offering me close to nothing 20% discount on a new TV. This is the TV that lasted the least amount of time since CRT televisions. I don't play any video games, have a screen saver. I have a plasma TV from Panasonic, purchased in 2007 and it's still working fine. I'm taking legal action against LG, thankfully where I live we have a legal warranty that supersedes their manufacturer warranty.

Lg pays 618 euro and I should pay 575 euro.
I asked friendly if they just want to give me 618 euro’s and I will invest that in a new lg, they wont do that. They only want to pay 618 for repair.

I bought a B7 from newegg 11/2017. After a little over 2 years, a major, major burn in splotch in the bottom right corner appeared and felt very warm. It was a known defect. Even though it was past warranty, I took a chance and contacted LG. Suprisingly, they offered to replace the screen and labor on their dime.😳 They contacted a local repair guy, he came over and did it all within 1 hour on site. 😳😳By the middle of 2021, though, normal burn in set in.
We do watch many shows, but we do not leave our screen on any set pattern for even over an hour. There seems to be a random ‘youtube’ or ‘playstation’ icon that has a prominent, saturated presence that imprints itself at some unforseeable and opportune time. I’ve sat at my TV and seen it happen in real time.

Old OLEDS (4-5y+ ago) are vastly more susceptible to burn in than the new ones.
But exchanging your old OLED for a new one every 3 to 5 years is normal, OLED doesn't last as long as LED but it provides plenty of benefits to make up for it.
The customer has to decide if they're financially able to purchase a new 1000$ OLED every 3 to 5 years or not.

      Advantage:
-each pixels is own light, thus same blacklevels as oled
      -brighter
-faulty pixels/panels can be swapped by swapping a panel
-tv can be expanded by adding panels

I have the same burn in the middle and the netflix logo and the natgeographic rectangle and the cnn bottom news ticker. Faces, sand and yellow background images all have a green tint in the center. Thanks , LG wanted me to pay £800 to buy a new replacement panel from them , then once my authorised repairer had swapped over the modules on the back from old tv to new tv(£200 to repairer) then LG said they would refund the cost of the panel , £800. With my previous correspondence to them , I can’t risk them not coughing up after I’ve forked out the panel money for them to change their mind . A new 55” OLED can be got for £800. I am
Not convinced of future burn in from OLED. I’ve swapped my tvs over and now my 65 B7 is where the 55 was . That has very little use due to it being in my lounge which we use about 5 times a year !! As I have 2 German shepherds who leave hair everywhere , so we live in the family room/kitchen! No doubt the 65” will go the same way but it’s only had about 2 months of use in 4 years !! Maybe when that goes I’ll change both to Samsung or something , but no one should have to change their high end tv after 5 years . I previously had Pioneers and they were rock solid . One is even in my man cave and that’s 14 years old !! The OLED is brilliant but at this time I will stay away from OLED as simply will not fork out money every 4-5 years . Shame as I really do like LG and how it works etc . LG UK 🇬🇧 could have simply sent the panel free of charge to my dealer and I would have happily paid the dealer for his time to swap things over . Oddly enough, I literally have the EXACT burn in as displayed in your video. "BREAKING NEWS" in the lower left corner, "NETFLIX" in the lower right corner (there's also a faint RUclips logo in the middle bottom of the screen). I use an Apple TV connected by HDMI exclusively, we hardly ever watch the news, and the Netflix icon on our TV would be in a different spot. I can't help but think after seeing your burn in that it was an image or video clip used by LG during the quality control phase prior to shipping the TVs out as new-in-box. Seems like these older OLEDs were pre-staged to fail. I'll be contacting LG Direct and see what they can do.

I am considering an LG OLED TV snd stumbled upon this video.
Your Pioneer appears to be an Elite model? I have a Pioneer Elite 50” plasma, 15 years old and, like your TV, mine is still rock solid and working great. It has side speakers mounted on it, so it provides a great picture and solid sound, all in one unit. Like you, if I got a new TV and would have to keep my old dinosaur plasma.
The new bright TVs keep grabbing my attention, and I’m thiiis close to bringing one home. Your video is very useful, as an LG C2 is in my short list.
Curious, if the plasma was working great, why did you replace it? I’m looking for justification for me to buy a new TV…the practical side of me says I don’t need one when the Pioneer works so well, but the emotional part of me keeps telling me, what the heck, go for it.
Your input and comments will be appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Hi . Thanks . After 10+ years with the Pioneer ( I had 3 around the house they were that good when they came out !)I wanted a smart tv with 4K which is a step up in quality. The LG is a great tv with great blacks but so frustrated with the break down of picture quality. Will have to research again when I renew these but for now the old vintage Pioneer will hang proudly on my man-cave wall continuing to give a great picture .

LG's OLED pannels have other lesser known issues along with DSE( dirty screen effect ) and pink tint. It really is a good, bad or ugly pannel lottery! "Maybe" QD-OLED will be better?!! But as you said zero guarantees there either. Maybe its just that after coughing up a sizeable lump of between 2>4K£ we all start to care that bit too much about a plastic rectangle...

Based on my research, apparently the long pixel clean is meant to be used manually very rarely, mostly if there is stuff like visible image retention. The TV will do it by itself after MANY hours of use (at least in LGs) Using it too often can (again, from what I've read and heard) lead to shorter panel life.
Sony's website for example says that you shouldn't run the long panel refresh more than like once a year on their OLEDs.
LG TVs (don't know how other brands handle this) run an automatic short pixel clean after every 4 hours of combined TV usage after you turn off the TV.
