I wish there were more reactions on RUclips to this game’s OST. Machine Girl did such a great job with their first video game soundtrack, and it’s such a unique sound for games in general.
Gosh I just love this OST so much, probably overall one of my favorite OSTs in recent years, just such a vibe. In terms of whether the songs were created for the levels/stages, the game creator gave Machine Girl a lot of freedom with making the OST and mostly just gave them vibes and maybe evoking a specific feeling for the song, instead of a specific direction for the OST. And in terms of inspiration, two of the biggest inspirations for Machine Girl are Hideki Naganuma (Jet Set Radio) and Soichi Terada (Ape Escape), the duo are really big fans of both of them, so they've influenced their music plenty
This game is amazing. It's essentially a arcade like speed run game thats a first person shooter. It's a lot of fun and honestly when you get into that rhythm it's pretty much a zen like state.
Yes! Neon White is one of my favorite indie games of all time. The ost is insanely awesome and a big part of why I like it so much. It also helps that the music is good cause you’ll be replaying levels for hours trying to get a good time 💀.
This game is such a modern classic, I don't care what anyone says! The soundtrack only backing this games amazing vibe; its all so addicting, it just gets into my mind!!!
YEAHHHHH LET'S GO. GODSPEED BABY. The second this game got revealed at a Nintendo Direct and I saw the Machine Girl logo in the trailer, I actually freaked out a little. Such a good act, knew the game was gonna have a banger all-timer OST immediately.
Neon White is the GOAT (no bias), and the soundtrack matches the insane quality. If you ever look at more of the OST, Thousand Pound Butterfly is a personal favorite!

It's so, so, so, so good. 【ＧＯＤＳＰＥＥＤ ＢＡＢＹ】 Edit to add extra thoughts: It's a game where speed is important because it *feels good* to casually speedrun, but it can be played entirely casually as a shooter puzzle game. Each weapon is a 'card' that you can pick up with limited ammo, but you can also discard it for different movement types. You have to figure out how to get to the end of the level while destroying all enemies. Each level is relatively short, ~1-2 mins on the first run, then you feel encouraged that "I CAN GO FASTER" even without the game requiring it just to get the basic medals for each stage. That's built on top of a visual novel about a rogue's gallery (with the MC played by Steve Blum) who die and are risen to heaven to fight demons for a chance to stay there. It's so, so, so, so good.
Yeah it's definitely a speedrunning game, it's basically a "first person racing game" you have guns and ennemies but they are more targets you have to shoot on your way to finishing the level and it's almost a puzzle of figuring out the best way to optimize the level. Also every gun can be discarded to provide a movement ability (for exemple the machine gun can throw a grenade that both destroys ennemies and boosts you in the air so the best way to use it would be to destroy a big clump of ennemies while skipping a chunk of the level with the explosion boost). It's a game meant for speedrun, you even have in game hints of shortcut you can find once you've beaten the level with a fast enough time to help you get the harder medals. Also you get a visual novel in between levels =p And the characters and vibe is like, unabashedly edgy early 2000 hot topic kinda stuff, the game is just cool.
Also to answer your question, aside from like "mission complete" type of song that play at specific moments and character theme that play for specific characters, each song is tied to a world, in the game, so not a specific level but more like an environnement. And yeah you end up associating the environnement with the song

Sonic the Hedgehog's official account has been releasing remixes for the upcoming remaster/new campaign of Sonic X Shadow Generations, they're basically releasing 1 track every 1-2 weeks. So far we've gotten Kingdom Valley and Space Colony ARK. Give them a listen, perhaps make it like a miniseries, listening to them as they come out.

Aside from the admittedly cringe dialogue, this game is an absolute banger, an amazing speedrunning fps with some mad trials
