Hey Robbie love your videos mate. A tip if you have more time let them sit in a bucket of fresh water and a couple of handfuls of salt and they will spew and crap out a heap of mud gives them a much cleaner taste once you cook them.👍
Going fishing and doing a bit of yabbying this long weekend here in NSW. Your videos have proven super helpful mate, can't wait to serve up some Yabbies for tea!
Definitely the best way to cook them I reckon. The meat in the claws tastes the best in my opinion! You've inspired me to go yabbying this week, I haven't tasted one since last summer and that's far too long haha.
Likes the shoe recovery at 6:04 lol, very subtle! I'm amazed you fitted 2 lemons in the eski, my last 2 vehicles would have been far too big...... This batch of yabbies looked way better than the last lot you showed us!
I eat the claws also, normally it would be annoying, but I use a nutcracker on the claw, and it makes it very quick to remove the shell off it. I first ate Yabbies as a kid, I was impressed by how they became the red or orange type colour when cooking. To me they taste similar to a prawn, meaning pretty damn good. Catching is also very easy, using nets like you have is the best way to go. When I was a kid and teen, I used to catch them by hand however, using fishing line and meat, and then grabbing them with my hand, this was only possible because the water was very clear where I lived, so I could see easily 60cm into the water, so it was easy to sneak my hand over the Yabby, a friend of mine that lived in the area taught me how to do it, essentially you kind of fold your hand lengthwise while grabbing them, and their front arms end up being caught in that folding at the base of your hand, it means they can't pinch you. While this is fun to do, in your typical Australian waterway it's not too visible, and using nets is far easier for catching a large amount of Yabbies, that's why I own 2 nets myself. I do exactly what you have done, in boiling water. I eat mine with a small amount of salted butter, and it's perfect. I live around the Peel river, so sadly we don't get the huge spikey Murray crayfish. We just get these more typical ones like you catch, that are smoother and about half the size of the Murray crayfish. Still decent however, a large typical Yabby is still as good as a proper sized prawn. Where as I would relate the Murray crayfish's size more the equivalent of a lobster.
I reckon yabby is the nicest of them all. I have caught a lot using meat and string and my bare hands as well, but prefer a nets simply because I don't miss as many. Haha
Great video bud 👍 In eastern North Carolina we cook ours in equal parts water beer and vinegar with a couple tablespoons of Old Bay👍👍👍 Try it out if you have a chance It’s really good
I'd love to be doing this. I'm not sure if it's legal in the south west of WA. Here yabbies used to be known as Gilgies (pronounced Jilgies), the local Noongar peoples name for them. Yabbies has been popularized here unfortunately and no one young these days knows what Gilgies is. Happy hunting and eat a few yabbies for me :) Cheers. Bob.
Hey Robbie today I went fishing on a bridge on a dirt road in a creek that’s ran off the Murray river. I put net in for about 30 minutes and got 1 yabbie and 17 shrimp so I decided to bring the home and start a shrimp farm. So I maybe thought you could start a little shrimp farm at your house. Just a thought for a video.
Robbie should do a video on where are good spots to drop your yabbie nets, not giving your spots away just for people who have never done it to know what to look for
Hey Robbie. Did you know that those little Coleman gas bottles are refillable? I got an adapter on eBay a few years ago which allows you to fill them from a full sized gas bottle.
Hey mate I just throw them out. When I'm in the bush I throw them in the bush for the scavengers to feed on. At Gome I put them in the freezer until bin day then put them in my bin.
Darker colour pots you will get more. Light refracts off more lighter colours than darker ones .they live in dark environments imitate that water colour with pots it works brother 👍💯
Btw, if you just cook them for 1 minute in the boiling water, then take them out, removed heads, shells, poo shoot and the skewer them (a few per skewer), and fry in pan or over open coals they are yum with a great sauce and salad
A old fella from outback nsw showed me the best way ,you just removed the tails then twist the middle fin on there tail from side to side and the poop vein comes straight out
Hey - what would happen if you cooked the yabbies for say 30 minutes ? - like you said you can't burn them - next time cook them for 30 minutes to let everyone know why you shouldn't cook them for that long - OR maybe its fine.
Musta bin a number of People who either love to let yabbies live - OR a number of yabbie loving people who aren't happy with you chuckin' a fresh live yabby into a pot of boiling water - most people would prefer you put the live yabbies in an ice slurry prior to boling - this practice may lead to less dislikes
The optimum time you should leave a net in for is 4 hours. Otherwise the yabbies may start eating each other, depending on how many you catch. Also, You’re always on about snakes 😂 you must be very scared of them
Two days ago in a comment I said: "cant wait for another yabbying video". Then BOOM! Robbie delivers the goods! Perfection.
Haha I have a strong of yabbying videos this week mate. 👍👍👍
Fantastic video. I dribbled all over my keyboard watching this. Thanks for sharing mate

The farm dams are good but have you sused the lagoons around the Murray river ! Awesome video
Thanks mate. No haven't tried the Murray River lagoons. I've caught them in the Ovens River lagoons such as this one though.

@@Gazman152 hahaha not likely with me Gaz. LOL
Hey, Robbie what is that water hole? It looks to me as though it is an old rubbish dump. I hope not, but that's what it looks like.
Hi mate I think it is just an old lagoon that has had concrete dumped into it to prevent erosion when thew river floods as this floods from the river.
@@robbiefishing, that is a great relief for me. Thanks mate.
Geez you sound exactly like Huey off hueys cooking adventures 😅😂
robbie what do u do with the yabby scraps ie heads. do u have another use for them or just throw them out
