Canned cat food in a stocking works so good. Trick I leaned as a kids. I'm an Aussie, I remember times as a kid we would go as a family catch and gather yabbies from an out of town dam. 15 family members pulling sting baits and putting our catch in wet heshen sacks. We would then go back home and put the yabbies in a kiddie pool, while the adults drank and we would pull the dead ones and put aside for friends pet fish "Oscar's and angel fish". After a couple of hours they would start the boiler. Time for us kids to catch them all again for dinner time. Good old memories and I'm only 35 lol. Freshwater lobster lol, so good dipping Tails in garlic butter...

Well done guys. That first dam was off the charts. It’s hard to find a good yabbie dam in Victoria. I’m surprised you didn’t catch any marron. Marron are listed as an invasive pest in Victoria but there are only a couple of dams on the Mornington peninsula that actually have any which I didn’t find out about until a few days after I was there. I’ll definitely give the bacon and snags a try, I usually use goodos dog food in the pissy bait catcher nets we’re allowed to use.
Thanks is mate! Yeah Marron are everywhere else except these small inland dams! Think the water isn’t clean enough for the old Marron! Bloody good eating tho! 🤤🤟🏾
@@BushRats yep , did that once and the stupid brother tied it to the front of the car , i told him not to do it , but he did it anyway , fucken putrid, got a shot of the old man dry retching FAF
I saw the comment about using a bale of hay in the dam, that will work somewhat, but fisheries farming teaches using a bale of “Lucerne”. This provides food, the hay as it breaks down depletes oxygen from the water, Lucerne does not. For structure for them to hide in, use a lot of short 7 to 10inch sections of different diameter scrap pvc plumbing pipe glued or bundled together like a pyramid, and loose pieces. The smaller yabbies hide from bigger ones in these for growth in numbers and as food resources reduce. Feed them Lucerne as the water level drops, and seed the banks with grass seed so when the water comes back the young ones eat the grass around the edges because they are actually more herbivore but will take any protein. If a dam has a defined cut edge at the water line to grasses growing on the dam wall, you know it holds a good number of yabbies. Grasses into the water are either recent increased storage or no yabbies. 👍
I always enjoy learning new ways of cooking. Where I'm from, would have purged in saltwater then added garlic ,lemon, onion, and cayenne. If you pinch the middle flipper of the tail you can pull out the poop shoot all in one split. 🤙
@@carolinelloyd1858urging in fresh would do nothing. If you put salt in the water it purges them and also removes the parasites. They don't like the salt water but it won't kill them overnight.

An old timing man once told me that if you place bails of hay in a dam , it helps the Yabby population by providing food shelter and deters algae from blooming = healthier water .I have never tried this ,have you heard any thing like this?
