These are Tasmanian giant freshwater crayfish from Australia. They are a highly threatened and vulnerable species that are among some of the most protected crustacean species in the world. We also have a number of blue freshwater crustaceans in Australia, particularly over on our Western Coast it's rare but we can encounter cobalt blue marron (part of what is named the 'Cherax' species), similar to the Tasmanian freshwater crayfish but significantly smaller.

As a kid I played in the creek by my grandparents house. Therenwas a bridge crossing the creek and underneath was a giant blue crayfish a little bigger than the first one Jeremy caught. I am amazed how big they get
I remember in the 1980's in California as a kid I used to see giant crayfish that must have been 12" or larger (including tail). They were massive. And a bit frightening to a small kid. The creeks were teaming with life. But after the 1982 - 1983 great floods everything was washed away and never came back. And I think just to many people fishing and just to many people all over the place. Probably never see creek life like that again or of the sizes and quantities again. There was so much going on in the creeks back then.
It's still there. We have them here in NW VA up in the mountains where people don't go. Not as big as this, but there still big, and plenty of them. That's why I love the country. Less people, and PLENTY of wildlife..

I am from a ranch deep in the mountain in Jalisco Mexico and many of these crayfish used to be found in the river that passed through the ranch. They are very rare now but I have seen shells as proof of these extremely large cray fish.

@@tom11zz884 Possibly, but conservation only works if there is a population left to conserve, and the only way to find out if there is, is through investigation. At least that’s my humble opinion.

One of my favorite episodes and there were many was his trek to the Congo River in search of the Goliath Tiger Fish. Beautiful creatures but at the same time....terrifying.
Yep.. And crawdads love murkey.. as a rule they don't get big in clear waters. I grew up on the California delta. It's much like the bayou.. minus the gators. But it's thousands of nautical miles of black water.. And we had as many or.more crawdads than Louisiana. Our town had a giant crawdads fest every year. You can throw a trap down in in 3 hours pull up a hundred crawdads.. I'm not kidding.. a hundred per trap.
I was born in a farm in the jungles of Guatemala. As a child, I caught crayfish that size in the rivers and streams in that region. Sadly, when all the farms there started to plant sugar cane, all the creatures living in those rivers died as the rivers and streams became polluted with chemicals from the sugar cane mills.

Same! The ones I caught as a kid and catch with my kid now are literal child's play. I was especially taken aback when he said it could take finger off or crush your hand... that's some serious stuff there.
@Janis1526 Same here in Connecticut.

12 What?
Still remember as a kid seeing how much more snow use to fall than nowadays, helped that i was about the height of a coffee table.
In the hills of New York, we would catch 8-10" ones head to tail. Scared us all as kids lol
I've seen them at a creek in San Diego
Those would've been extinct a long time if they lived here in Louisiana.

I am from a ranch deep in the mountain in Jalisco Mexico and many of these crayfish used to be found in the river that passed through the ranch. They are very rare now but I have seen shells as proof of these extremely large cray fish.

Being from Louisiana I scratch my head hearing him complain about “murky water” that’s the clearest stream I’ve ever seen in my life
Yeah same hahaha
The stories, memories and experiences Jeremy has man. Lucky dude
As a cajun I would love to eat one, but at the same time I would be okay with not eating one. What amazing creatures! It is kinda like when you catch a 100+ year old alligator snapping turtle. You marvel at the size and beauty and let it go.

I think, that It could probably-eventualy break the bone, but couldnt cleanly chop off finger...
Coyote has let a giant salt water lobster pinch his finger and he said it didn't even hurt it just pushed in his skin and I think made him bleed a tiny bit. So that thing definitely wouldn't chop off a finger that guy has no idea what he's talking about.
