Interesting video. As the owner of both a 17hmr and a 22wmr, my conclusions are the same as yours. Both are good. The hmr is a great rabbit cartridge. I have shot a red fox with mine and it dropped like a rock. I think the 22 wmr is a better bet though for larger animals.
Good to see you back and in good health. A very interesting and honest evaluation of the 17 rimfire. I looked at the 17 Remington centerfire when it first came out back in the late 70's early 80's. Just couldn't get interested in such a diminutive caliber with such a small, tight bore. Now the 17 rimfire has been established and still being used for quite some time, but I just haven't been bitten by the bug. I already own a good number of 22LR/22M firearms and just can't see adding another, smaller caliber, with ample amounts of ammunition, to my stable. Just the thought of cleaning that tiny bore is a deterrent to me. The performance of the 17 HMR is however impressive, but not enough to peak my interest. Thanks for another great video.
I have a 17 hmr and don’t use it often but where I live I hunt rabbits and hares in reasonably close proximity to roads, houses and especially farm stock. The 17 HMR in 17 grain has a safety advantage IMO in that the 17 grain projectiles tend to disintegrate on impact so appears to be less danger of ricochet. As you know the 22 LR is a shocker for ricochet 🇺🇸 🇳🇿
Proof is in the pudding or gel this time. Some 17HMRs are more accurate with the 20gr but it looses velocity/energy quickly past 75yds. The heavier 22wmr is good to 125-150yds usually. Good info & glad youre better. 😷🤧👍🙏
Glad to see you back. I will agree with you that the 22 mag. has a lot more to it then the 17 HMR. But, with that being said, I have taken down 2 120-130 lb. wild hogs with my 17 HMR. 1 was out at about 85 yards out. The biggest thing is shot placement and being able to make that shot. But I believe that holds true for any size caliber on any size game. I am curious about that 20 Hornady though, I'll look for some of that. Hadn't seen it until now.
You weren't "unfair". You posted something that they didn't want to hear. Therefore, it must be "rigged" and "unfair". Maybe "unconstitutional" or even "TREASON!" 🤣 Good review, George. Remember, the price of admission to the RUclips comments section is very, very low. Knowledge is optional. 😜
Hi George. Sorry to hear you were under the weather, but I'm glad you're feeling better. My wife and I both had that same bug. I had a cough that lasted about 2 weeks. Great to see your side-by-side comparisons. I don't have a .17 HMR, but I have a .22 WMR Savage bolt-action rifle that is great fun to shoot. I'd still like to see some .22LR comparisons, and I'm sure your other fans would tool.
Thanks for the video. Man those shots on steel were nice at over 100 yards. I was shocked that the 17 at 100 yards did little to no expansion. I have a 17 HMR, but like you I like my 22 WMR. Thanks again for sharing and glad you are doing better.
Thanks mark! You know it seems like it was just a few weeks ago that we were talking about getting back in the gym and getting healthy so we could go on a moose hunt next year. Right now I'm just hoping to make it😄😄
I, for one, never doubted your test results on and in, the first round of testing. They are both great rounds, BUT there's is no substitute for mass and power in cases like these. I too have both caliber rifles my 22WMR is the Henry and the others are not :)
Hi George, glad your feeling better. I remember my son had a 17hmr. I think it was a Ruger don't remember. But a year before he went to Afghanistan we would shoot the erasers off pencils at around 100 yards. It was pretty cool on some of them you could see the round shape of the bullet in the wood. You have been very busy around the farm the last couple of days. Well that's a good thing, keeps you out of trouble lol Thanks for all your hard work and time. You are appreciated.
George, thanks for the mention and thank you for an excellent test on the 20 grainers. It's funny, I asked for the 20 gr test but also have that same exact Henry you're using in .22 WMR. Rimfires are fun. 🙂 I enjoy all your videos. Keep up the great work and get well soon.
Glad you are back and doing better. When the 17 came out the gunshop I was worki n g at traded for a lot of 22 mags and guys were taking 17s. One trip out shooting pairrie dogs and they were back and traded for 22 mags. I have done a fair amount of business with vintage scopes and am happy with them.
It's been a long time since I have really done any hunting for small game . I buy a license every year but only end up using it for fishing . Most of the small game I have hunted was less than 50 yds . Where we live it's not often you have to make a shot longer than that . But one day I still plan on getting a lever gun and it will either be 17 or .22 mag . I have more than enough .22lr in pistol and rifle so a lever is next . I would trust your recommendation for a lever rifle over anyone else I know for sure . I had a Weaver scope 3-9 on a Remington Model 788 .308 it was a great scope . Great video as always you have a blessed one my friend .
Glad you are feeling better. I'm trying to catch up on things around here before winter. Trying to catch up on some videos I have been neglecting. Sorry! Seems like nothing but work and lack of sleep lately. Hope you and all the family enjoy the upcoming holidays. Be safe!
Way back when, Remington came out with a "5mm" rimfire round (feel free to correct me if I am misremembering the caliber designation) all the same comparisons were made between the new round and the "old" .22 Magnum. The two camps battled it out for a few years, but the .22 Magnum camp won the war for only two reasons that I ever heard of or read about. Remington was the only firearms manufacturer that produced rifles for the 5mm and they were both bolt actions. And secondly, 5mm ammo was more expensive and much harder to find than .22 Magnum ammo. I developed a bit of an itch for the 5mm and found a couple of rifles on a local gun store rack, but no ammo was available. It was "on order" but to my knowledge it never arrived. As quickly as it appeared on the market the 5mm and the rifles it was chambered for were dropped by Remington. I keep hopping the .17 HMR won't suffer the same fate and with more than one rifle brand and action type to choose from I think there is hope for it. If I were to develop an itch for a rifle in .17 HMR I would make darn sure I stocked up on ammo and purchased a good rifle to hunt cayotes with as I think .17 HMR would be an excellent choice at longer ranges. Great video as usual! Keep 'em comin'!! And I hope you are feeling better soon.
@@chainbenwa2713 My memory may be taking a rutted dirt road on this one, but I think the round was called the 5mm Remington Rimfire (Magnum?...Not sure about the magnum part). I don’t think you were unfair to the rifle or the load. I don’t own a Henry but those I’ve handled are fine guns. If I were to buy one, I think I’d go 22 mag. Might even trade my Marlin 17 for one. I bought into the hype of the 17 HMR early but just not really a fan.
One thing about the 22 magnum is that it extends the range of the 22 long rifle without sacrificing the short game. But the long range ballistics and accuracy have been questioned. I plan to compare that between the 17 HMR and the 22 WMR soon.
.17 HMR is quite powerful and probably, if ammunition costs aren't a problem,is certainly better than .22 LR.I don't know how it compares with things like .17 Hornet but i suspect not so well as some of those .17's send the bullets downwind around 4000 fps (!) and the HMR is only about half that.
Thanks George, glad you're feeling better.
Kind of crazy how quickly the expansion fell off when you tried it in the gel at 100 yards, it seemed to hit the plates quite well at 100-130 and 150.
Great video sir as usual , glad to see you posting again

Wow. Posted this only five minutes ago.
Yep. And you are the first comment😉
I've been up early today studying my CAS videos on tips to improve my stage times.
I really enjoy your vidios
Hey George, where are you? Hope all is well.
🙂👍
You should do voice work, you have a great voice!
Maybe one day!😄
👍😃✌️🇺🇸💪
I stopped the vid 1:54, & haven't read any comments. At the risk of sounding ignorant or stupid I guessing 3 gr will make little difference.
Huge difference!
You can't be unfair to a 17HMR because it ain't as good a a 22magnum. 17HMR is only good for crows.
Might as well delete youtube subsciptions
They all should be turned in to scrap.
Second haha
👍👍
The 17hmr is worthless not good at any range.
