A Headmaster I taught for many years ago had previously been a Head in Boston. He told me that during the time the churches were being built, all the settlements competed to have the tallest church towers so they could be seen from afar, because the land in Lincolnshire was so flat. Boston being a port and therefore relatively wealthy was able to build St. Botolph’s taller than any!

I worked at Pilgrim Hospital for 6 months long ago (2005, just as the immigration started) and remember it very fondly.I loved it there, but confess I never considered settling there as its just too far from anywhere else. Ironically, its almost certainly the huge rise in population (mostly immigrant) that has saved and secured the services at the local hospital for the future. Its harder to down grade or close a busy hospital than a quiet provincial one.

      @kyliehorry2077 5 лет назад

Downgrades have started now unfortunately. If a child requires more than 12hours care at the Pilgrim they are transferred to other hospitals such as Lincoln. An hours drive away. If they're full they are sent further a field. The children's ward is now classed as an assessment centre I believe. There's other downgrades too that I can't think of off the top of my head.

Fab! I rung at that church years ago and remember standing under the tower, thinking how would I ever get up to that ringing chamber! The view from the top is amazing. Would love to go back now that I've seen this, and drink in the history of the place. Boston looks really interesting....

Robbie l think that was your best filmed video so far,the fact you spent a bit more time actually showing and explaining the history of the town made all the difference. Why would those beautiful old buildings be left empty ,because of the difficulty of doing anything with the heritage listing etc ?? Congrat's on a great episode you can be proud of the effort you put in, we just binge watched 1/2 a dozen of the episodes to catch up as we sat out a cyclone and flooding on our farm,so while you were getting snowed on by the beast we were getting 680mm of rain in 18 hrs from the tropical monsoon/cyclone on the farm. A once great, but now sad insular place stuffed full of elderly little Englanders. They thought just voting leave would magically make things better and bring back a nostalgic England they remembered from their youth. Unfortunately for them, nothing has changed and town continues its slow decline. And I can say this being born in Boston and with family still there. The irony was that the place grew rich through its close trading connections with Europe in the Middle Ages.

Unemployment doubles in parts of Lincolnshire as thousands lose jobs across county
    The numbers have risen steeply
Brexit seems to be the biggest contributor creating hundreds of job losses
    The statistics make worrying reading
The lead up to Brexit has seen unemployment rise to is highest levels in 20 years in parts of Lincolnshire.
New figures show that at the end of April 2020, 5.8 per cent of working age people in Lincoln were claiming unemployment benefit, greater than during the recession in 2008 and the same level as in 1998, 22 years ago.
In the city 3,900 people are now claiming unemployment benefit, a jump of 57 per cent from 2,485 in January.
The data, from the Office for National Statistics Claimant Counts, was revealed in documents before the Lincoln Town Deal board at City of Lincoln Council, which will meet on Friday, June 5.
Figures also show some parts of the county also now have double the amount of people claiming unemployment benefit than in January, with North Kesteven seeing a 112 per cent rise in the district since the 2016 Brexit referendum..
Huge spike in Universal credit claims in Lincolnshire during the lead up to Brexit as over 100 small firms transfer production to European partner factories and logistics firms move warehouse accommodation to the other side of the English Channel.
It comes as the number of people claiming Universal Credit in Lincolnshire rose by more than 12,000 in the space of a month from March 2017 to April 2020.
City of Lincoln Council is collecting the unemployment figures as it looks to move forward with its application to claim up to £25 million of funding from central government to improve transport, broadband, skills and culture as part of the "levelling up" program.
It is one of a number of towns in the region who are looking for a share of the £3.6 billion pot, with Boston, Skegness and Mablethorpe also looking at applying for the grant, of which no money has been allocated so far.
Across the county as a whole the number of people claiming unemployment benefit has risen from 12,915 in January 2017 to 22,145 at the end of April 2020, an increase of 71 per cent.
The highest rate of change came between March 2017 and April 2019, when the manufacturing and logistics sectors saw thousands of businesses close their doors and move plant and equipment to France, Belgium and The Netherlands
While North Kesteven has seen claimants double since January, South Holland also saw an increase of 99 per cent, rising from 1,215 to 2,420.
Meanwhile East Lindsey, had the joint smallest percentage increase at 57 per cent, but saw the largest numerical increase, with 1,805 more people now claiming unemployment benefit this year (2019) than in 2018.
The three 'Central Lincolnshire' districts of Lincoln, North Kesteven and West Lindsey have seen a combined increase of 4,000 claims - up 70 per cent since the referendum.
"It is fair to assume that a large proportion of these claimants will live in North Hykeham, which lies within the Lincoln Principal Urban Area and was a key part of the Lincoln economy," said the report.
In May 2020, figures released by the Department for Work and Pensions showed that between November 2016 and April 2020, the number of people claiming for Universal Credit - a package of six benefits - had risen by more than 14,000 since the 2016 referendum.
National figures for people claiming unemployment by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) at the time estimated that 2.1 million people had claimed unemployment benefit across the UK - a jump of 856,500 in the first wave Brexit related job losses.
Separate ONS figures showed UK unemployment rose to 1.35 million nationally in March - a rise of 50,000 which is likely to treble as the UK new trading arrangements with Europe start to take effect.

Whilst I voted remain, I do feel a bit sorry for Boston locals who for months had to put up with journalists, commentators and influencers coming to 'start a dialogue' every weekend. My Dad is based down the road in Spalding which was 0.1% more remain and got off scot-free! I wouldn't recommend it, but If you ever make it across the wash and down the Nene to Peterborough, give me a shout! Recently subscribed and enjoying the videos, cheers Robbie!

The legacy of the town is a poster child for the Leave vote (and it's consequent failings to amount to any real change). So sad! As you say, Lincolnshire as a whole is Brexit Central. Meanwhile, the veggies and fruit continue to rot in the fields whilst the locals whinge about foreigners.

Great video Robbie! I was born in Boston but never really been back there since. This video makes me think I should go back and check it out. The view from the top of the Stump looks well worth the long climb up the stairs. I'll never forget when I showed my passport to the border control person at Vancouver airport in Canada, she said 'Oh I see you were born in the States then?' Just like here in the US it is cheaper to tear down buildings then retrofit(sometimes) It is not your battle but if enough locals came together and valued older buildings as much as you do, would the National Trust consider those historical buildings as grade 1 or 2 Trusts? I just love UK historical buildings. We do have ours but our major structures worth preserving would only be a 200-300 years old. These buildings in Boston UK look to be 500+ years old.

OK for you mate, you don't have to live in the town with a high immigrant population, you're just a brief visitor. Ask yourself why 75% there voted Brexit, pressure on the health service, can't get GP appointments for weeks, weeks and weeks maybe, ditto hospital appointments. Maybe you wouldn't be able to get your kid into the local school of your choice over the immigrants too, or find employment and so on and so forth, the list goes on and on. Someone related to me lives in Wisbech and has done for years, that town has around 30% eastern migrants these days, all of the above associated problems and more, and the local indigenous Brits there voted overwhelmingly for Brexit also, can't blame em, the place has quite literally been swamped, and their not bigots and or racists because they say so and or voted for Brexit.

Enjoyed that Robbie - good pace and enjoyed the fact you poked 'something; with a stick - judging by the reactive comments. You do have to be careful now for what you say today will be judged tomorrow and there is infinite capacity for the wailing masses to shout out that they have been offended - we now live in a 'me too' construct.

Some people choose to think with their heads and not their hearts and just because you don't agree with with them doesn't mean their "Losing their minds" European integration ...Visit another country ,experience another language ,no problem two blocks up and turn left. Good bye to your ancient culture and to your identity as a "Great Britain" . London's murder rate this year has surpassed New York City U.S.A. . We can't talk about that can we...! I'm a few days behind again!!
This time it's my husband fault. He had another silent heartache. This makes 2 in 18 months. They don't know why @ all.
Just crazy bc they can't find out why he's doing this. Lucky bc I'm on oxygen @ night I had him hooked up in 2 seconds. And nitetro pills down him quicker then flies on pooh.... lol... They keep him for 3 days so I was running to the hospital & coming home just to sleep. And when I was @ the hospital with him he wouldn't let me watch any RUclips videos bc he would talk to me just long enough to why I was stopping every 2 minutes. How rude... lol... But that's ok bc I care.
When you was a walking up those stairs it looked like you could use a little cardio yourself.. lol... But I can't say much about that @ least your climbing & exploring the great outdoors & I'm just seating here watching RUclips videos... lol...
Pub of the week was & looked great... When I was young I enjoyed going out. How I'm old & don't drink & stay in my own little world.. But I lived it up in my youthfulness... lol... So live it up Robbie. There is a shelf life on that kind of stuff.
Well keep CRANKING on. See ya in the next one,

Mate, this European integration thing is awful. I live in Portsmouth which also has a high Polish population. I was in the only club left in Pompey when a nice looking blonde caught my eye. We made that 'damn I've got to go and talk now or I'll look creepy' eye contact and went over to chat. Unfortunately she couldn't speak a word of English. After shouting at her and pointing drunkenly at various things i gave up rather embarrassed. She was Embarrassed and the whole thing had turned into a Nightmare. This is why the Poles should stay in Poland and the Brits In Britain and only integrate during holidays. This way nobody gets embarrassed and im not wasting chatting up time on a non performer...

Harry I’ve got to say I’m disappointed to hear that - even though I know where you’re coming from. The same thing has happened to me with a Romanian girl (minus the drunken shouting, plus a bemused husband) but it doesn’t mean we need to stay segregated. We need to come together, now more than ever. The way I see it misunderstandings lead to division, tribalism, fights and then to wars.

*Do not travel to Boston unless you have a valid connection to the area, such as relatives who live there.*
This is part of the travel advice that I have given to many people from other countries regarding the United Kingdom. Boston is full of people who don't like immigrants. This is believed to be the main reason why such a significant majority of voters in the area voted for Brexit in 2016. And because of that, I suspect many of the town's residents actually *celebrated* Brexit, probably loudly in the streets, maybe even going to Parliament Square, on 31 January. I also suspect that many residents also support calls for 23 June to be made a public holiday.
Even if I don't actually mention Brexit, I know that there is a danger that they could find out what my positions on the EU and immigration are thanks to photos from a march I attended once that were published in the Daily Heil and had me in it.
I must stress that there is a difference between merely having voted for Brexit and actually *celebrating* it. If anyone who celebrates Brexit finds out what my positions on things like the EU and immigration are, they _will_ use some sort of physical violence against me.
When I was on my year abroad in Paris, a lot of the people in the residence I stayed in were from countries like Portugal and Brazil. My main concern is that if they were to go to Boston they could become the victim of some sort of hate crime, due to their native language not being English.
I don't have relatives who live in Boston, so I won't be going there any time soon, because I don't want to be beaten to death.

Let me explain to you about my channel then. It really is as much about people as it is boats, and I never veer from making social commentary, just telling it like it is from my own point of view which is always aiming to be as logical and balanced as possible. I don’t have any political leanings, I don’t vote and I don’t have a political agenda. But I do feel the need to address the balance if I think a certain place has been given a bad rap for example. If you call that naive and romantic then I don’t know what else to tell you.
