Can't wait for the low power mode battery drain test so curious how much the difference will be! Would also be very interesting for the 14 inch base model :)
For the Xcode tests - since the M2 Pro and M2 Max have the same number of cores, they will complete the build around the same time, but there will always be a slight variance of a few seconds, just like the the other benchmark scores that vary with every run. Looks like a nice bump over the M1 Max for either of the new machines.
It needed to be 10°C cooler than the M1 not hotter. I was considering working in nice locations, especially in the sun to boost health/circadian rhythm. But will M2 throttle even whilst idling on a hot day? I need a hot day at the beach review and benchmarks.
Love that you guys include tests for the professional tasks that one will use these computers for. Probably the best channel to get extremely detailed analysis/comparison with these new macs. Thank you guys.
I think the smaller heat sink is so that the CPU SoC doesn't actually HEAT UP the DRAM chips. My guess is that the DRAM chips run generally cooler than the SoC, so they reduced the size of the heat sink to cover exactly the SoC and left the DRAM chips "on their own." This also increases the ability of the heat sink to cool the SoC. If anyone knows for sure, is like to know. Thx.
Spot on observation this is exactly the reason. If you notice, the heat pipe is thicker the _other_ way so that it can retain _almost_ the same surface area (though not quite).
If I’m understanding your reviews correctly, the M2 Pro/Max series advantages over their M1 counterparts has much to do with overclocking/extra energy use. My ideal would be to optimize a balance performance with heat control. My goal would be to keep those fans OFF and the computer (relatively) cool as much as possible.
Hi Guys, great comparison, again! I have a suggestion. When doing the test, it might be better to separate the computers just a little more so that there's more fresh air running between the two. As you can see the air inlet for the fans are on the sides and so when they are too close to each other only the air inlets at the far ends would pull fresh air. This may be shown in the minute ~ 12:38 where the the temp for the M1 Max is higher on the right hand side (side closer to the other laptop) than on the left. (Of course once the temperature increases substantially it is more difficult to notice it).
These laptops are crazy. Regardless of the issues the M2 has it is next level. Can’t wait to see the changes when they move to 3mn. Thanks for the great content!

We can’t expect every new chip to double the performance of the previous (even though it does for 3D modelling) 20% gain on something that was already fast is impressive. Especially if a project is taking hours to compile. Great Video.
The Blender performance is crazy on the M2! This would feel like a Hyperdrive Millennium Falcon compared to my 2012 mbp I'm currently running 🥲. Another great job at not only opening up the inside and looking at the bits and pieces but also all the various tests you've done here, Max Tech always comes through. I think its going to be a really tricky decision between the M1 and M2 for lots of people such as myself who don't have a newer machine as it looks like the performance on 3D is such a large jump... after all the twists and turns we have had leading up to this, it may actually be worth it in the end!
Well like you said earlier, these M2 SoC are a stop gap for apple before the arrival of the M3 SoC which would be built on 3nm technology. So I feel the M3 SoC is where we will see the big leap in performance and all other benefits that may come with it. However, I love what apple is doing with there laptops so far ❤️
Please make more vids like these even tho these are not new machines anymore. For example, you guys said you’d make a vid on putting thermal pads in the 15” MBA but you never did… why not change that 😁? Also try thermal pads in the 14” MBP (especially with the M2 Max) and see if it helps thermal throttling at all. I know it has fans, but ofc Apple hates to spin those up! I watch this exact vid at least once a month bc it’s so good. For a stop-gap chip Apple really cranked a heck of a lot of performance out of the M2 series, particularly the Pro and Max. It’s a way bigger difference compared to something like the A17 Pro vs the A16 Bionic despite the A17 being on a new process node!
So far M1 Max seems to be the best in terms of price for performance for music producers. As nice as the 2 extra cores are for the overall system, they don't seem to provide any benefit when it comes to audio production. At least the battery life is good for when you have to produce on the go, but I think saving money on an M1 Max MacBook would be better. Still looking forward to M3 Max to see if how well 3nm improves audio production! 😁
Would be interesting to see if a therma padl mod like on the M2 Air helps to reduce max temps by using the chassis as additionl thermal mass. Especially on the 14" M2 Max.
Great comparison. It's great to see some improvements from one generation to the next. Since I do mostly video editing with Final Cut, there it's not worth to upgrade yet. Maybe after 1-2 more generations.
An enormous thank you for bringing to life a captivating comparison of the Macbooks. The M2 Max raises the bar with its outstanding microphone and impeccable image quality, but upgrading from the M1 solely based on these features may not be necessary. As you mentioned, the 1TB upgrade is a smart choice that provides lightning fast read and write speeds.

I'll keep hold of my M1 MacBook Pro for now. The extra speed is nice, but I'll wait for the M3 versions, which hopefully are more efficient and run cooler. Thanks for all the detailed testing guys, so much more detail than many other reviewers.
When I ran a commercial photo lab here in NYC, a 20% difference would have been a reason to get the new machines. Of course, we didn’t use laptops, but with 32 Macs, the time savings would have been considered to be significant. A 20% average difference means that work that took 5 hours, would now take 4 hours. At several hundred bucks per hour, that’s significant. It means that work the couldn’t be done in one shift, could now be done in one shift. That’s major.
It makes sense that it would be quite a big difference, I didn’t realize at first but because pros and maxs are just doubled base models, which meant that the smaller difference add up- except Wi-Fi 6 and the other internet upgrades.
The fact they delivered on 15-20% year to year performance improvement is crazy good, especially considering they aren’t even on A16 cores yet and aren’t even on 3nm yet. I still want, however, a 14-15in pro that is aimed at business pros. Give me a mini-LED panel with pro-motion, upgraded webcam and mics, good speakers, the standard M2, and make it as thin as the air. Basically an upgraded air.
Really enjoying all of these comparisons you guys do. Not sure why apple is letting the new m2 chips run hotter than previous models. The extra spec bumps are nice though.
As a side note: If you live in the US or can go there quite easily, there are certified refurbished stores that you can buy that APPLE HERSELF is reselling. Like a 64 gb Ram and 1TB SSD M1 Max for 3000$ (A lot cheaper than the 32 gig version pointed out in this video).

Tiny error spotted for Figma Web Design test slide @8:57, M1 Max and M2 Max labels are switched, but looks like video editing performance is still encoder-limited. Another great informational video, Max!
I have a 2017 MacBook Pro, is it worth upgrading to the M2 Max, or wait rather for the M3, or try to get a refurbished M1 Max? As you can't order a new M1 MBP anymore.
I’ve been debating between the base M1 Pro 14 (on sale) or waiting for the M2 Pro for a while, but went for the M1 Air instead. No need to upgrade any time soon. Thank you so much for the in-depth comparison!
the level of details and information on each video is amazing. the only video that you'll need to buy the MacBook pro m2 is this one. Great job. Keep it up.
Regarding Music Benchmark - launching a bunch of samples and Stock plugins(meaning those that already come with logic) is not benchmarking , those plugins are already designed to have low load on cpu and thats why they are loaded . Making music is not about having the most tracks in a project. If you want to do a benchmark for music ppl and actually stand out from other creators - get a copy of Omnisphere - a plugin that most music makers use and has a pretty heavy load on the cpu and see how many of those it can handle. Thats gon be a real benchmark

Thanks for the In-depth Videos! I think your the only RUclipsrs, who test Apple Produkt so thoroughly!
You are doing an awesome job! This is the first place I turn to for Mac news!

Your reviews and narratives are great! I appreciate the thorough information.
Is it worth to buy the studio or the new MacBook pro or wait for any updates soon?
I love the detail of your tests. Great work as usual!
I’ve been debating between the base M1 Pro 14 (on sale) or waiting for the M2 Pro for a while, but went for the M1 Air instead. No need to upgrade any time soon. Thank you so much for the in-depth comparison!
