    One of my biggest problem with music nowadays is it sounds so barren and minimalist. QOTSA is my favorite band and I can not say that about any of their songs. Some of my favorites are Turnin On The Screw, Go With The Flow, Fairweather Friends, I Appear Missing and 3s and 7s.

    • @LieLikesMusic
      @LieLikesMusic  5 лет назад +3

      That's true. It is very minimalist and repetitive. Qotsa is fucking awesome.

      Now there is queens stuff that is very minimal and simple. Those things are fine to be, they just have to be done right and tasteful. Queens of the Stone Age songs aren’t anything super complicated and confusing, but they are full of soul, passion and creativity that gets busy. Qotsa just have the magic and are amazing!!

  • @zerovian1089
    @zerovian1089 Год назад +6

    …Like clockwork is the best album imo, the reason why there’s so much great people only in the background was because Josh Homme was in a state of depression after getting an infection and had to reignite his love for music, this is why he made it this way, to tell the story of how he was getting through this depression. Also the tracks are just badass

    • @STARK0181
      @STARK0181 6 месяцев назад

      I get where you're coming. For me SFTD is untouchable.
      For me, SFTD is a pure showcase is to what makes this band so great which is their versatility, skill, edge, sharp lyricism, and unorthodox song style. And to put the cherry on top, it ties all of that together through a brilliantly conceived concept with potent broader themes
      While it does come close at certain points, like clockwork just doesn't reach the same highs that SFTD does for me. That's just my opinion though.

  • @MatiasDypala

    I really like "Like Clockwork", it is dark af, but not in the way as Songs for the deaf. Take for example "keep your eyes peeled" or "I appear missing" or "If i had a tail", it is like deep self darkness.
    "Songs for the deaf" is driving in the day to the sunset. Like clockwork is driving in the night to the dawn.
    Btw Songs for the deaf is my all time favourite album.

    Fantastic video over all but just a few things, Elton played piano on track 7, fairweather friends, not track 8 (i don't think smooth sailing as any piano and if it does it's not elton playing it). He also sings on it and you quite clearly hear him singing the title of the song in the chorus. Also I can see why you may have been disappointing with the lack of obvious input from collaborators but I feel that's missing the point of the QOTSA way of doing it, it's not supposed to be QOTSA FEATURING ELTON JOHN!!!!! and bring in the big bucks and attention, it's a genuine musical collaboration that may be a small input or a big one but they never sing or dance about it as they let the music do the talking. It took me ages to figure out where alex turners part was on the album but was very rewarding when i did.
    PS. it's spelt VampYre with a Y on the album ;) and also a very goood video nonetheless and deserves many more views.

    • @LieLikesMusic
      @LieLikesMusic  7 лет назад +2

      Mystery Season Ah alright. Thank you for correcting me 😊 What i had in mind in terms of collaborations was Songs For The Deaf. Nick and Lanegan added such a magnitude of versatility and value to the album with their voices. Each of them had the leading role of a song. It was the first album i experienced with 3 vastly different vocalists. And still they made it so great!
      I know. I'm fan-boying over SFTD. But i thought they might be capable of doing something along that recipe again. ...Like Clockwork teased people with that promise long before the release.
      Anyway. Now that i know Josh's relationship with music a bit better, i think it was stupid of me to expect anything to begin with haha 😂 Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

      I do agree that they sorta bigged up the collabs on LC but was also kinda expecting them to not be that big in the album, also don't apologise for fan-boying over SFTD, it's my favourite too, i have the pitchfork tatoo'd on my wrist

    Great video, I feel that QOTSA are going in the same direction as another band I love, Deftones. They started out strong with heavy, kind of angry songs, but slowly began to transition more to softer, more evolved sound. They grew from where they were and now want to tell a different story, one of tranquility but of course still parts of their former selves poke out

    • @LieLikesMusic

      Falafel Boi SWEEET!! Deftones is another one of my favorite bands too. Didn't like Gore sadly. Koi No Yokan, Diamond Eyes, White Pony and most of the other ones were sooo good! I definately agreed. Deftones and Queens have become softer by the time.

    Great video, one thing to note is that Josh's guitar teacher taught him polka tunes. So because of that the rhythm he plays is very influenced by this - No One Knows is a very clear example of this.

      @LieLikesMusic  6 лет назад +1

      Yeah i forgot to mention that in here. Thanks for highlighting it. I don't know if he's using it
      in that many songs though. The Way You Used To Do and No One Knows as you mentioned, are
      some examples. But i can't seem to think of any other songs.

    After binge watching more QOTSA videos, I figured I might as well rank their albums. Keep in mind this is only my personal opinion and it's just a fun thing to do (not to be taken seriously), so I encourage anyone who sees this to do the same.
    7. Villians
    Their only mediocre album imo. I wouldn't come back to anything besides the first two tracks on here.
    6. Self Titled
    Not as memorable for me, but still a really solid album. Especially the opening track.
    5. Lullubys To Paralyze
    The heavy guitar riffs make for some of the best songs they've ever crafted, but to me its still not all memorable.
    4. Era Vulgaris
    For obvious reasons not their best album, but it is criminally underrated. Almost all of the risks they took with the experimental guitar sounded good in such a wacky way, I loved it. Its slowly wearing out on me though.
    3. Rated R
    This is the first album that I love and frequently come back to. It has so many cleverly portrayed ideas, and the only thing keeping me from putting it at #2 is the production, which is still really good, it just doesn't stand out. I also love the vibrant drums and transitions from song to song.
    2. ...Like Clockwork
    This album is their most tense album, with the most attention to details in melody and guitar. Listening to this front to back gives me chills and can still get me moving. If I had a tail is a decent song, the rest is all worth giving multiple listens.
    1. Songs For The Deaf
    This was their "breakout record", and I still see it as underrated. The production from the beginning is jaw dropping especially for a project set to release in 2002. There is not a single song that I would skip, and there is no denying that you can find their most flawless songs on here: Millionaire, No One Knows, Song For The Dead, Go With The Flow, and literally every song on here represents my musical tastes in the best way possible

    Forever thankful Josh created Kyuss and pushed 'desert rock' as he did. Josh himself said that he wanted to create music that no one else had ever created, and that he actually listens to his own music because it's like, why create the best music you've ever created and then _not_ listen to it??? While I'm a huge Kyuss fan (and desert/stoner rock fan in general, which, thanks to YT's AI, turned me onto a myriad of other related musical tangents), I'm just now getting into QOTSA, too.

    I can't say any Qotsa album is bad and there is nothing on this video about Villains as it was yet to be released, but I can surely say Like clockwork is my least favourite one. It has some great songs but overall I'd say I listened to it way less than the other albums.
    Also I was quite surprised that the author didn't quite get Songs for the Deaf at first. I'm not native english speaker but damn, those tracks instantly get you onto the journey with the intro... Thae sounds of open door beeper, shutting door, FM tuning and C.L.O.N.E. radio intro. Just WOW.

    Great documentary, but what is your favourite qotsa album. I am a bit sentimental about Rated R, but that was really the first album I listened to in full, so it always has a soft spot for me. I also found SFTD my least favourite. But I love them all and that includes Villians as well. I still have to listen to Villians a lot more because its only new.

      Carolyn Lozan Hahaha i love how you just mentioned 4 of their albums as their best. They don't even have that many albums yet haha. I think there's a quality all the way through their discography. That's why they're one of my favorite bands 🎶

  •  6 лет назад

    I am an overthinker and I come from poetry and literary critics so that's definitely made me a lot more critic about the stuff I listened to when I decided to commit more to how I enjoyed music. I'm saying this because QOTSA is a band that really shifted my perception about what I thought I liked about rock, and showed me how much I appreciated heavier sounds, and all that robot mechanical stuff, combined with their striking lows. You mentioned not being particularly fond of Era Vulgaris. It's an album I replay with minimum effort, so good, entertaining and interesting. ...Like Clockwork was also their first release that I had the chance of anticipating and I was also a bit disappointed. On the other hand, "Villains" gave me their first ever song that I keep close to my heart, emotionally - "Fortress". They had always been a bit shallow on causing emotional reactions, but I adore that one.
    Rated R is perhaps my favourite of their albums. The extremely smooth transitions that go from Leg of Lamb to Auto Pilot to Better Living Through Chemistry is something I keep coming back to and every single time I reach the end of BLTC I have to go back to Leg of Lamb and give it another listen, until I am overwhelmed by how GOOD this is.

    • @LieLikesMusic
      @LieLikesMusic  6 лет назад

      I'm glad we have the same passion for qotsa. So you didn't like heavy music until you heard them? I guess they were
      my first introduction to heavy music too. But it depends on what you regard as heavy. Some of their songs do land on
      the border of metal i feel. Like a lot of the songs from Songs For The Deaf (and their first 4 records in general). Personally
      i really loved Like Clockwork. When Villains came out, that was my first big dissapointment... But what can you expect from
      a band that's had such a great streak of albums. Many thanks for sharing Luisa.

      I have to disagree. Personally i think SFTD and Nick Oliveri were the best album and bassist.

      I agree tbh. SFTD is a brilliant record, but there's just something about Like Clockwork I can't get over, the theme of falling into madness, the constant talk of fear, it's so magnificent. My favourite album ever.

    I can somewhat agree for ...Like Clockwork with your opinions on collaborators, but Jake Shears nailed his part on Keep Your Eyes Peeled and if I'm not mistaken Dave Grohl drummed on 7 of the 10 tracks and left a pretty obvious mark in my opinion, especially on songs like My God is the Sun and I Appear Missing.

    • @LieLikesMusic
      @LieLikesMusic  6 лет назад

      He left a much more evident mark as a drummer on Songs for the Deaf though. Thanks for seeing what i mean.
      Qotsa was always better when they let more people come through. Nowadays it seems like Homme is more
      confident doing things his own way - but for the worse.

    I kinda accidentally stumbled into this band. I did know no ones knows. By the radio and it flew under my musicradar for a lot of years.
    Until I was doing a song facts or genius search for lyrics and it did a top 10 misunderstood lyrics.
    So I checked it out and one of the songs was QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE SICK SICK SICK.
    Which everybody thought it was six six six but not.
    So I checked out the corresponding video and it's good so I checked out there discography on my music streaming service.
    Fuck why was I not paying attention to this band back in the day.
    There good it's like hard rock/punk
    With this and that thrown in for the mix.
    I love PRIMUS and FAITH NO MORE.
    AND QOTSA itches that scratch.
    For good weird music.

    • @LieLikesMusic
      @LieLikesMusic  6 лет назад

      Yeah that's a really good description. Much of Songs For The Deaf is really heavy
      hard rock/punk music in my opinon. Blended together with the quirky custom scale
      that Homme plays with his guitar. This is my all-time favorite band :) And i can really
      see why you draw comparisons to Primus and Faith No More. They have the same authenticity.
      Hope you check out all of their albums, cus they're all so good! Except for the newest one haha.

    I've heard is said that Era Vulgaris is their worst album and when I first heard it I didn't like it much but I've recently given it another go and it's actually not bad at all, it's just very angular with a very distinct sound in it's production. Plus Run, Pig, Run is one of my all-time favourite songs ever (by any band). As far as albums go, Songs For the Deaf will be hard for them to top. Looking forward to your review of the latest album, I just went out and bought it.

    Amazing análisis. I agree in everything and i'd like to add a few ideas: first, to me, the par albums (2, 4 and 6) are more "solid" than the other. The others are more experimental, less cohesive, more diverse among the tracks. That diferent between albums is another way to express the snake skin idea in music. This central idea also makes the diference between Josh and Brant-Garcia. The late two, great musicians, seems to wanna make the same record again and again, and Josh was boring after "Sky valley". So they break up kyuss. Greetings

    I gave their first 3 albums 5/5, Lullabies to Paralyze 3.5/5 and Era Vulgaris 4/5. The rest I haven't heard. The hiatus was too long and it had become a bit too much Josh Homme the Band so I kinda lost interest. They were one of the best live bands ever during their earlier stuff and one of the last truly great rock bands.

      I'll add the self titled album in that list too (although I've run my course with it). Because from start to finish they are the most listenable to me. Era and Clockwork are 'clunky' to me, and SFTD gives me ear fatigue. Rated R is.. well.. Rated R haha. I do think Lullabies is really underrated and there's no song I skip on the record. Villains I do think about skipping a couple tracks but it's NEW so maybe that's why I'm digging it!
