    He points out something a lot of musicians don’t get. The music overall is what constitutes the heaviness. A heavy rhythm and bass can fool you into thinking a guitar part is cranked with distortion when more than likely it’s cleaner than you think. Queens, SOAD, and even Zeppelin are great examples

      This is often the case when trying to match the tone of recordings. Hard for a riff to sound as big with the same amount of saturation/gain when it hasn't been compressed/eq'ed/layered to fit in the mix with other instruments supporting, such as bass and drums.

Overall the video did a great job getting close to the vibe & tone of the original but when you really analyze it side by side there's often too much gain & treble

I've been searching for about 15 years and in that time I've discovered one of the biggest things you can do to get it is in playing technique. I think that's what LRGD has more of than this reverb guy. The nuances of Josh's and/or Troy's playing.

      They're a master volume, thickness of 3 guitars band....I mean the heaviness of the bass is what seals it. Mexicola sounds so big because the bass acts as a bass and a 3rd guitar.

    • @cstimko
      @cstimko 7 лет назад +14

      Homme's sound centers around those old Ampeg SVT amps that just don't ever distort. On top of that, he uses medium/low/vintage powered pickups. While his old rig had those DiMazrio's in an Ovation Ultra (LP style guitar), most of his newer stuff is semi hollow or full hollow. That's going to lend itself to an "airier" sound.
      He has some pretty gnarly pedals (that PDF is on his board, along with an Ultimate Octave/Foxx Tone Machine), but his sound is much cleaner than most expect.

    • @chadgrov
      @chadgrov 7 лет назад +4

      Carlo Von Sexron it's common because they're legit masters of building a soundscape that is "heavy" overall

    • @cstimko
      @cstimko 7 лет назад +5

      For the most part though, the Queens sound is a combination of Josh's pedals driving a high headroom amp (that's what those Ampegs were famous for) with Troy's AC30 tone. Dean also uses some pretty clean amps (Twin Reverb and a Magnatone). They use all sorts of crazy stuff in the studio to get their unique sounds for albums, but they're live rigs are a lot simpler than people give them credit for.

    Yamaha G100 > Buffered Boss Tuner >Gokko Octave Fuzz > Source Audio EQ (with 4 separate presets loaded in) > Boss SD-1 > EHX Canyon > Mosky Silver Horse (then either a tele or a Revelation Jazzmaster with P90's, depending on the song / bit I'm doing) will get you everywhere with a lot of tweaking of the guitars volume and tone pots - I am that soldier and I have been down this rabbit hole for as long as this video has been on RUclips ;) Troy Van Rental - Kings of the Stone Age

    I find the remark about using single coil guitars very interesting. On stage you do see him playing single coils mostly, whilst Josh is on the humbucker side of things. However, I wonder if that's the same in the studio. Given that single coils usually can be fitted in a mix easier, I wouldn't be surprised if they were using them mostly when recording.
