    Damn, this is certainly unexpected. One of my favorite death metal songs ever! It was such a shame, that you never checked out Alkaloid, very underrated band. It's one of those bands I'd really love to request myself.
    Now you just need to check out Vektor - "Recharging the void" for another proggy masterpiece and I'll be happy :D

    Alkaloid is led by Florian Magnus Maier, aka Morean, who spent the early part of his musical career as a classical composer. He's a pretty unbelievable musician.

    • @wolverine669
      @wolverine669 2 года назад +6

      Morean also handles the vocal duties in Dark Fortress and Noneuclid (+guitar), has done orchestrations in Devin Townsend Project albums Deconstruction and Ziltoid 2, etc etc. I believe he has four classical albums out by his own name.

      i'm not sure if he leads the band since Hannes is the main songwriter, but it's arguable since he is the lyric writer(i think) and composes too

    This song is sort of like an epic. The music mimics the 'rise'/evolution of the cephalopods from ocean, to land, to sky, to outer space... The sense of urgency or bizarreness in the music is tightly entwined to the narrative in the lyrics.
    I appreciate that they make the instrumental melodies harmonize with the vocals as co-story tellers!

    This is kind of a sequel to a song on their earlier album called Funeral for a Continent and it reprises some of the themes in that song. However i wouldn't say it is required to listen Funeral for a Continent but if you like this song, you'll probably like that too. also that solo section around 16:00 minute mark is perfect

    Hannes, the bands drummer, is the main songwriter and composer of this song so it makes sense that he plays around with meter and rhythm a lot when he writes :) As far as him using a lot of oddtime it's just because he likes and is comfortable playing in oddtime haha. And is influenced by bands that abuse it. Also PROGGGG
    Oh I should also mention the two guitarists came up with their own solos and thus the melodic elements in them (although Hannes has written solos before as well. Just not in this case)
    Pretty sure the tapping you heard in the solo in the outro was from one of Chris's solos. He has to play with tapping instead of sweeping since the past decade or so because of his focal dystonia.
    Honestly solos that shred like this are so commonplace in progressive death metal that I guess I'm just desensitized to it and it doesn't take me out of the vibe at all haha.
    Song structure/arrangement and dynamics is VERY important to Hannes's writing and I think he's a genius when it comes to this
    Important thing to note also
    Hannes as far as I can tell isn't the type of guy who writes "technical for technicals sake". He didn't even like the term tech death for the longest time. He's sort of embraced the term tech death to describe his music nowadays, but if one has been closelyyyyyy following him since Obscura it can maybe become clear that he maybe only did this just because the term is ubiquitous and inescapably applied by others when one naturally writes music this demanding and complex. What I mean by this is that there's a really interesting interview snippet where he talks about how he feels about the term
    It's his response to the first question as well as the bit at 5:43 - 6:15 if you search Obscura interview dailymotion Hannes on Google or Duckduckgo. It's the video uploaded by Metal Chroniques (Id just link it but RUclips is a bitch with links)
    Also… yeah theres a distinct harmonic language here and in Hannes's music in general. :)
    Honestly he's probably my favorite death metal composer still
    But yeah really cool video man
    Relaxing to watch as I'm winding down for bed haha
    Subbed!

      Dude, thank for all of that. Lots of great info here, like Chris' use of tapping due to focal dystonia. Huge props to him for continuing to push his craft and become a better musician in spite of that. I'll have to check out that Hannes interview too.

    Dyson sphere from the first album has so much going on. Two tempos, circular modulation, and it continues on each album.
    The newest album has a song that brings backs riffs from other albums if you listen very closely.

    Just finished your Spawn Of Posession vid and saw you talking about how you felt some variance in vocal delivery and tempo would have made the song hit different and IMMEDIATELY thought of Alkaloid, so glad to see you've given them a spin before. Both of their records are absolutely phenomenal pieces of art telling a grand sci-fi story about the self-evolution of humanity and their journey through the cosmos. Putting "Brian Reacts To Alkaloid - The Malkuth Grimoire FULL ALBUM" on my Christmas list this year for sure!
    PS - I love that you laugh every time they bust out the death metal OÜGH, makes me smile every time I hear it in any song too. Just a fun n goofy lil genre trope :~)

  • @GregsWhiskyGuide
    @GregsWhiskyGuide 2 года назад

    it seems this kind of songs were written to be dissected by Bryan... I didn't knew this band but enjoyed say 2/3 of the song but I have to regret some choices like too brutal contrasts at several times & some rythmic passages that for some make it less complex & appealing as the rest is, because the potential of the rest is huge & I enjoyed it...It is also the kind of things that annoy me a bit also about a band like Enslaved, which I also like but not always...One would argue you can't be satisfied all the time as a specific listener who would like specific directions/choices while other listeners won't complain the same or at all...Thanks for your analysis anyway...and yeah the duet solo in which the guitars went each one their way at some point was gorgeous.

    • @jeannettesimpson9778

      @@Zyborggian I'd find that difficult to explain as it's just an instinctive reaction. It's like looking at a landscape and thinking, that reminds me of the Scottish highlands. My brain simply makes an association. (Just a few notes in Earthside's "All We Knew and Ever Loved" made me think Uriah Heep's "Salisbury". So much so that I had to check it out.) If pushed, I'd say the drumming reminds me of Kai Hahto, though with less use of the double bass, and the words "rise up", which immediately switched my brain to the growled "rise" in "Sons of Winter and Stars".

    I guess it's ok to like Lovecraft, or at least to be inspired by the notion of cosmic horror (though I think actual cosmology is a lot more hostile to human beings than anything that anxious old racist dreamt up). Myself, I'm at a bit of loss to really understand how that fascination could be deep enough to drive this amount of effort, but good on them for doing their thing. It's still hard not to giggle, though.

      Pausing a song ruins momentum, atmosphere, tension, chord progression, and pacing; it's not something I'm going to do on my channel as it irrevocably changes the experience of a song. As for having me talk over the song, I'm assuming that most people are coming to my videos having already heard the song. If not then I provide a link in the description to check it out without my commentary. My videos are not designed to replace the original video in any way and I make no claims that this should be any intended way to listen to the song
