Truly one of the greatest songs ever written. Period.

Hope you get a chance to check Vektor. They are an experimental thrash metal band that incorporates many different elements in their music. It's very melodic and some of the stuff they do will put you in awe. Terminal Redux is one of the most important thrash albums of the last 15-20 years. I think you would really appreciate Recharging the Void.

I’ll be totally honest, I really love everything that Tomb Mold and Blood Incantation have done, I thought the Devil Master album was great, I’ve liked the stuff Revocation and Gorod have put out the last decade, I’ve liked stuff from Gatecreeper, Creeping Death, Spectral Voice, Fleshrot, Phobophilic, etc.... but I still think Terminal Redux is by far the best metal album of any genre to come out in the last decade

    • @longingbydesign
      @longingbydesign 3 года назад

Agreed on Vektor as a band, but unfortunately their releases were never able to keep up with the debut. "Black Future" BY FAR is their best album, "Forests of Legend" and "Accelerating Universe" being by far the best tracks. The followup album "Outer Isolation", has "Venus Project", which is great, too. I'm sad to say, but "Terminal Redux" never did it for me.

wow. i actually wasnt really feeling it at first, but i kept at it. i kept listening with a sort of 'mean mug' on my face staring at the wall just really paying attention. man after like 5 minutes, i was fully immersed and was amazed and all the little textures they toss in. they just like give you a taste of a really sick changup to something you didnt see coming, and it keeps moving, and while your like awww, something new happens so you keep listening. then it hits you and i always just yell 'YES, SICK' and start jamming so hard. then that pattern keeps going untill those ideas start advancing and mixing even more.. man its pretty complex but they pulled off the easy-listening well. its not often i listen to something this complex that i totally 'get it' on the first listen.
your channel is always the best for finding 'obscure' or 'not mainstream' music that is just so fun
sorry for the random thoughts-rant: i dont mind posting them because they give good insight into the emotion of someone. and i try to type them out that way. its more honest emotionally, but makes it a fuckin mess to read lol.

Great analysis! Finally, yes, some Gorod. Probably one of the more underappreciated prog death metal bands. These guys are incredible composers and well-versed in a bunch of Western and non-Western musical genres outside of metal. Their style is very complex and tech-savvy, but they try to keep things super melodic, groovy and, ultimately, fun, ulike some of prog metal bands on the more "tedious and pretentious" end of spectrum.
Btw, their guitarist Mathieu Pascal, who is one of the founding members, has a RUclips channel where he plays the entirety of Transcendence in one take. (He also uploaded a terrific cover of Al Di Meola's classic Egyptian Danza).
P.S. If you'll react to them again, I'd recommend the title track from Aethra LP or something from A Maze of Recycled Creed LP, for example The Mystic Triad of Artistry.

Awesome song! Hadn’t heard of these guys before. Some Stream of conscious thoughts-
Immediately liked the interesting rhythm in the beginning with the organ in the background. The swingy next section was really cool.
The vocalists variability was nice throughout the song. Didn’t get “bored”. It was almost an instrument as the rhythm of the guitarists.
Tha bass was phenomenal throughout. Between laying down some groovy foundation or some tasty riffs. Loved it!
Drumming was super solid throughout and allowed the crazy rhythms and riffs during the song.
Overall loved this song. It felt long but I’m a good way. Felt like a journey I didn’t know I wanted to go on! It reminded me of BTBAM in the genre shifting and technical prowess. I’ll be checking them out. Thanks for the recommendation!

Nice! I'm glad you liked them so much! That's one of the things that make them one of my top 3 bands. The complexity and their technique in their composition isn't the only matter here, the way they use those and other resources to create music, is what makes them unique! The outro in "Syncretic Delirium" still makes me feel goosebumps when I listen to it 5 years after it's release. They are just incredible! Thanks for making me smile after 13h of work bro, this made my day! ♥️

About the vocals: I started from "clean vocals" metal (power/prog) and it took me a while to accept harsh vocals/growls. When i did enjoy a song with harsh vocals, it always came from the instrumental part first. Harsh vocals is like a barrier that won't let you focus on the instrumental part of the song unless you accept it, and once you accept it you'll see that clean vocals wouldn't fit into death metal, so growls is a necessary evil in that sense.
That said, instrumental bands don't get recognition at all... a band MUST have vocals for people to get into them. So yeah, sometimes you'll see a perfectly fine instrumental song in extreme metal that was composed by a band with harsh vocals... Having them is not always the best for the song, but it needs vocals to thrive so let it have vocals

While not among my favorites, Gorod are definitely a rock solid band. I've enjoyed all their albums (and this EP) even if I wouldn't claim any as being a masterpiece. They just know how to make groovy, catchy, proggy tech-death, which is a pretty rare thing. FWIW, the focus on the low-end in metal mostly started with death metal in the late 80s and became massively popular in the wake of Meshuggah and their use of 8-string guitars in the early 00s. Before then, most of the original metal bands used plenty (if not mostly) mids/highs: Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, Mercyful Fate, etc. Part of that was the dominance of Marshall Plexi and JCM amps that were themselves mids/high focus. I agree with you that the emphasis on the low end gets old after a while. I also envy those who can name chords and intervals by ear. I've tried and can't.

Ok I need to aknowledge the person who requested this composition, thanks who ever you are, this is a gem! Whenever you come to Paris I pay you a beer haha! Gorod are so unique, even in the very niche of tech death. They never forget to swing or groove on a regular basis in their songs in order to not lose the listener, while being absolute masters in the tension/resolution principle. They are in my very favorite bands, along Death, Coroner and a few others.
Note for the channel's host (great channel by the way!) : they are two guitarists. Seen them live numerous times, they play as tight live as on studio records ;)
Edit : From Gorod I'd recommend next "Disavow Your God" (personal favorite!), "Elements and Spirit", "Here Die Your Gods" (older but yet excellent). cheers!

As for the vocals: For me, something would be missing without them. In general, yes, instrumentals can be cool, but there is something about adding the human voice, in some form or other. Its almost like it becomes a movie score without, and you have to add the story visually (through film) or add it with your imagination.
Anyway other songs, these are not like this song though:
    disillusion - wintertide
    Wilderun - garden of fire

Very good reaction. Gojira isn't the best metal band from France.
Usually their songs are around 5 minutes and without clean vocals but it's easy to recognize their style. There are 2 guitarists live.
I will always be grateful to the band Necrophagist for starting this subgenre of death metal.
In the same vein but slowlier, there is also Carcariass from France. It is more focused on lead guitars than riffs with a lot of sweeping and tapping. You should enjoy the bass a lot.
This is the 1st min of 1 song on bass to give you an idea:

Other songs that you should like as much as this one:
"Apparition" from the band Spawn of Possession.
"The warrior's Infinite Opus" (instrumental) - Inferi
"Dualis Flamel" or "Cast Into Exile" - Equipoise
"Ancient Gods Genesis" - Dark Secret Matter (this band is an instrumental clone of Gorod)
The bands Shadow of Intent, Inanimate Existence, First Fragment and more.....

Best metal band from France is probably Deathspell Omega IMO. Not a big fan of Gojira, tbh, and I do prefer Gorod. Alcest would be up there too, though a very different thing than any of the others. I wouldn't say Necrophagist "invented" this sub-genre either. Presuming we're talking about tech-death, I see that genre as mostly an evolution starting from the proggy DM of Death, Cynic, Atheist, and Suffocation, then Cryptopsy, then Gorguts, then Necrophagist. Also, Bryan did react to Spawn of Possession, though I don't recall if it was The Apparition.

@@jonathanhenderson9422 Benighted, Scarve, Aephanemer, Hacride, Hectic Patterns, Furia, No Return, Trepalium, Fairyland, Mercyless, Mortuary, Pitbulls in the Nursery, Yyrkoon... are also better, like many bands composing songs with more than 3 guitar riffs. Gojira is good but too boring. I didn't say that Gorod was the best, it depends on everyone taste.
Brian reacted to the songs from Spawn of Possession and Inferi so I apologize and I'm gonna watch them.
I still think that Necrophagist was the first to combine very brutal death metal with so much melody and groove most of the time. The bands you mentionned are rather brutal or very melodic, not both (Suffocation and Cryptopsy are close though) but I like them all, no question about that. Some of them included jazzy stuffs in their music, Necrophagist didn't but brought something "new" IMO, rather from classical music.
Almost all death metal bands are influenced by Death :)

At 5:45 so that’s called a hoquet? French word for hiccup... I’ve always associated this rhythmic pattern with crazy nintendo music when the composer wants to add complexity within the confines of 4 audio channels :)

Yup, though it's spelled 'hocket.' That's a pretty cool association there with older video game music and it's a pretty accurate one at that. Limitation breed creativity, they say, and older VG composers were definitely limited.

Please react to Kauan - "Sorni Nai". Kauan is Russian/Ukrainian post rock/doom metal band who sings finnish. The album is a dedication to the infamous Djatlov Pass Incident.
    ruclips.net/video/dO02VJEYYEk/видео.html
Wiki: The Dyatlov Pass incident (Russian: Гибель тургруппы Дятлова) was an event in which nine Russian hikers died in the northern Ural Mountains between 1 and 2 February 1959, in uncertain circumstances. The experienced trekking group, who were all from the Ural Polytechnical Institute, had established a camp on the slopes of Kholat Syakhl, in an area now named in honor of the group's leader, Igor Dyatlov. During the night, something caused them to tear their way out of their tents and flee the campsite, all while inadequately dressed for the heavy snowfall and sub-zero temperatures.
After the group's bodies were discovered, an investigation by Soviet authorities determined that six had died from hypothermia while the other three showed signs of physical trauma. One victim had a fractured skull; two others had major chest fractures and the body of one of the group was missing both its eyes. One of the victims was missing a tongue. The investigation concluded that a "compelling natural force" had caused the deaths.
Numerous theories have been put forward to account for the unexplained deaths, including animal attacks, hypothermia, avalanche, katabatic winds, infrasound-induced panic, military involvement, or some combination of these.
If the reaction of an entire album from an unknown artist feels too risky. So alternatively a single song from another album: Kauan - Tähtien Hiljainen Laulu (Silent Song Of The Stars) ruclips.net/video/HfZOwzLOROs/видео.html
