WHO IS BUNCHARTED?
We're Michelle and Alex, an American expat couple living abroad in the Netherlands. 🇳🇱
In 2020, we quit our jobs to travel the world, and... well, that didn't happen. So in 2022, we decided to make an even BIGGER change: to pack up our lives (and our cats 🐈) and move from Austin, Texas, in the United States, to the Netherlands. Subscribe for new videos like this every week!
The Jip en Janneke non alcoholic champagne are a new-years classic! Also in strawberry flavour. I don't drink so it makes for a good substitute.
Anything Jip and Janneke is so Dutch! The illustrations by Fiep Westendorp are truly iconic. She even has her own museum in Zaltbommel (a sprinter train station in between Utrecht and 's-Hertogenbosch)
About the "kip-kerrie salade", Salade literally means "salad", but it's a suffix we use for a lot of chunky spreads usually eaten on bread or crackers.
And when you eat it like a spread on a toast or cracker, you can also call it 'slaatje'. When you say slaatje people will know it is not a salade like with lettuce.
Seeing Michelle transform from a genuine hard boiled egg hater into a happy egg on filet americain consumer feels like a huge personal achievement from a follower POV😁. And thanks for the kind mention Alex, i'm glad that you both now officially belong to the pistoletje ei -filet americain Club🥳
Omg your cat trying to eat the snacks is the cutest thing.
Ik geniet elke week van jullie video's, vooral de humoristische manier waarop jullie dat doen!
dank je wel!
@@bunchartedit actually is “dankjewel” because dank je wel is translated” thank you certainly”
@@bunchartedyup, love the humor in your vids too!
cc captions even added some unintentional extra humor. Rookworst and tompoes are translated as rogor and tomo.😂
@@blexible4894Both are correct, actually
The fizzy applejuice is kinderchampagne (Childernchampagne.) We give it to little kids on new years eve to make them feel they also have a fancy drink.
it certainly made us feel fancy!
@@buncharted lets be honest were all still children at heart ;)
Ever since 1983 Hema has a design contest and that 'winner' will be produced. By far my favorite is an old one, Le Lapin, a kettle produced and sold 1989/1990. Even bought one secondhand when I forgot to turn off the gas. Search le lapin for pictures...
WE MUST FIND THAT KETTLE 😍
I found one too at a secondhand shop. Zo’n mazzel.
Heb de lapin al vanaf dat deze won. Nog altijd verliefd op dat design
I sold mine during the last Koningsdag since we always use the water cooker to make hot water. I did it with a little pain in my heart 😞
The best "stroopwafels" are the ones you buy fresh at the "markt". I miss the Hema rookworst. (I lived in Nederland for 14 years)
Hollandse Eenheidsprijzen Maatschappij Amsterdam (Dutch single unit priced company Amsterdam) offers a good price for quality product range. Personally, i was stoked to see an actual HEMA outlet at the Lowlands festival years ago (i went to a lot of festivals back in the day, and normally shops on the camping grounds weren't that good in general) and i still remember how happy i was when i bought a bottle of shower gel from them.
Imagine being soaked from the rain, trashed from moshing all day long and tired from all them beers, just to lather yourself up with a familiar smell and comforting liquid to get you through another day of musical shenanigans.
And yes, i am talking about a fricking bottle of shower gel but it was one of the best memories i had from a festival. All courtesy of HEMA.
i love that hema was there for you 😄
Did'nt even know HEMA was an acronym until now lol
This video was posted an hour ago and already has 1.3K views. You guys are getting popular! Congratulations on the success 🤛💪
I can recommend boterkoek from the Hema, a fancy bakery often does a better job for a lot more money, but not that much better. In general I can recommend kroepoek, which is a kind of crisps but also an ingredient in Indonesian cuisine so it's usually in the Asian cuisine section of supermarkets. Especially the Krupuk Pedis (hot in Indonesian) is nice. Katjang Pedis is nice too, hot crusted peanuts.
Yeah jip & janneke (famous from a children story book) champagne (non alcohol) is also an iconic hema product. I still sometimes drink it as an adult on new years eve.
Lol the cat was really interested in the bag! 😊until the drop. I would love to see you do a pie comparison from any pie store. As there are so many good pies. 😊
I LOVE the way of presentation! You are fun and pleasantly quirky which spices up the video 🙂 I am fan! The HEMA things are good simple tasty food!
The caramel stroopwafels are okay, but the honey stroopwafels are to die for :D
HEMA _should_ sponsor you because now I crave for some HEMA stuff and will be going to get some.
You still need to try dutch fish specialties as we are a sea country:
Dutch shrimp (likely in a shrimp salat or similar)
Dutch smoked eel
Dutch smoked mackerel
Dutch plaice as a main course
Kibbeling and/or lekkerbekje (fried white fish)
It's a bit of a fiddly job, but smoked on the bone mackerel is much better than smoked filet. Then there is of course bokking and spekbokking, cold or hot smoked herring.
Pfft you didnt even mention the fresh and pickled herring. Pickled herring is a great natural source of, among others, vitamin A and D in winter. It also tastes great.
Smoked salmon is also a classic, as well as whole sardines. Throw em on the barbecue or in the oven for a bit, peel of the skin and enjoy. Tastes great, a bit salty but not too much, and theyre cheap and have much lower environmental impact than bigger fish like salmon or tuna, or importing pollock all the way from Alaska.
I agree. Get a whole mackerel and rip it open and just pick out the flesh of the fish. It is amazing. Smokey and fatty.@@DenUitvreter
@@Kruiwagenchauffeur And don't throw away the brown flesh.
Beet salad with herring and apple!
As a Hema Employee, I like this 😂
Have you guys tried a Broodje Shoarma yet? When Adam Curry (VJ for MTV, married to Dutch singer Patricia Paay, living in the US at the time) was asked what he missed most about The Netherlands he replied a broodje shoarma. It may not be originally Dutch, but in the nineties Shoarma snackbars were all over the place in the Netherlands. Currently more and more are being replaced by Dönner, which is NOT the same! (but it is cheaper and less hassle). It makes me sad because real lamb shoarma on a piece of Turkish bread with some letuce, chopped up tomatoes and hot / garlic sauce is to die for.
we haven't tried it - just a lot (a lot, haha) of doner. i don't think i've ever had proper shoarma before...
Yeah, I miss broodje shoarma as well. Nowadays if I order shoarma, it's almost identical to the stuff you can buy uncooked at Albert Heijn, which is nothing like the shoarma from the 90s. In NYC, shawarma did exist but it was also nothing like the 90's shoarma. Thinner cut, much leaner, different spices, and worst of all no thick garlic sauce. I think Americans are not as big of a fan of garlic as we are.
Crazy as is sounds HEMA dekbedovertrek made of flanel are the coziest on the bed in wintertime just washed, dried outside..Sleep like a baby.
Not crazy at all!
I got ridiculously excited to see the Space Needle and Kingdome on Alex's shirt. Good memories
Have you tried katjang pedis yet ? Since you are into some more of the hotter chips/nuts/crackers. It's Indonesian and translates to spicy nut which is exactly wat it is. Can be bought at every local AH and other grocery store, probably even at HEMA (not 100% sure about that one) They are mostly packed in plastic trays and can be found at the "fresh" nuts/dried fruits department. They have a bit of that chili hot after taste.
we haven’t but we will try them! they sound good
The Hema has/had them but I didn't like them that much, I preferred those from the Toko and the supermarket, Jack Klein and even AH home brand.
I got a bag Katjang Pedis from Lidl, and damn, those are spicy 🥵
@@DenUitvreter It depends on the supermarket, some are extremely bland but others (from Plusmarkt or LIDL for example) are quite spicy.
@@TheSuperappelflap Yes, but some spicy ones are also too salty or just not nice tasting otherwise. It's not just about hotness.
Glad I rediscovered your channel and binge watched the last few months
glad you’re here!
Great you discoverd the quality of Filet Américaine finally 😊👍
Just found out about your channel today (sick at home) and I love every video so far!
❤️❤️❤️
I absolutely love your g in 'goedemorgen'. It's beautiful. It's so good.
Keep the good spirit. I have enjoyed this video. 🎉
here in Belgium filet americain is often put on a sandwich with vegetables, eggs and some mayo. I've tried some vegan versions too and they're surprisingly good.
Ik kijk altijd uit naar jullie videos. Het valt me wel op dat jullie wel heel grote fan zijn van de HEMA 😂
dank je wel! we vinden het eten bij de hema lekker en het is altijd *vlakbij!
Would love to see you guys test different brands of rookworst!
I love the cat trying to eat the packaging. 😂 I have one of those too.
You all are missing out on the really good dutch dishes like Hazepeper (stewed Hare, leg meat) or Reepeper (Roe Deer) Reerug (Filet of Roe deer), Wild Duck, Lamb meat from Texel, Paarderookvlees (Smoked horse meat), Filet Americain, Osseworst, Smoked Mackerel, Smoked Eel, Kibbeling, Lekkerbek, Mussels from Zeeland with fries, Oysters from Zeeland, Lobster from Zeeland, Small gray/pink shrimp from the North Sea (they are really really good)
To have the best stroopwafel, you should go visit the town of Gouda. Besides being known for its cheese, the stroopwafel is a local specialty, and you can get them fresh and hot with the syrup dripping out of them from little stands.
Besides that, the town is known for having the oldest town hall in the country, and the leaded glass paintings in the main church, as well as having some nice museums and a very quaint walkable town center with lovely architecture and canals. Definitely worth a visit if you havent been there already.
Your videos never fail to make me hungry
ik hou echt van deze soort videos.
I love these kinds of videos.
Love Hema! I enjoy your video’s! 🎉❤
great video, love your cat
omg Hema broodje rookworst.. had my first this summer in utrecht, so good.
Rookworst en tom pouce zijn mijn favorieten! Leuke video weer!
My fav is the saucijzenbroodje and also the hotdog
Funny thing is i only go to Hema for their Hotdogs, those are straight from heaven !
the peasoup (and other winter soups like f.i. bruine bonensoep ) you should try with a good splash of Maggi or even Maggi Hot, its very common in the Netherlands...
Hema is a store i visit often. I'm a big fan of their T-shirts. Very good quality and nice price. And there's stretchy versions, round- or V-neck. Colour stays good too. Great buy. Boxershorts good too. Food wise they do some interesting flavors. In general good quality/reasonable price.
i just bought a pair of sweatpants from hema and they are so comfortable!
@@buncharted But for some reason i never go there for rookworst. I think i heard Unox bought the company that made the hema rookworst so i guess nowadays the Hema rookworst is a Unox rookworst?
yes i’ve heard that too but i think they’re different, just made in the same facility
@@buncharted Yea and the Hema one you can't keep for a year and the unox one you can so that's probably the difference in taste.
They also sell nice sweaters for about 10 euro, very good quality, I wear them all the time if its cold.
I regularly drive to Hema to get a "broodje rookworst", so I agree with your rating. I think that, like us here in the Netherlands, you must have grown up with licorice as a child to appreciate it more. I never buy ready-made pea soup. None can compete with homemade "snert". Braudsje filet with è and ùi (Hague accent for) broodje filet American , was one of my favorites for lunch when I still worked in construction. It's time for me to make one again. Hema is a great store but I am disappointed with their Tompouce. They don't use real banketbakkersroom (pastry cream) and I think that's essential. Entertaining rating video guys.
By the way, I place the Tompouce on its side and press a sharp knife through it so that I have smaller pieces that I can slide in completely...lol. With a tompouce I just have to have all the ingredients in my mouth at the same time for the ultimate experience.....hahaha😂
Please, try SWEET liquorice... - perhaps two stroopwafels or even three?
Filet americain is great, i also like the steak tartare spread and ossenworst with pepper & salt on pistolet.
Het gebak als geheel is goed bij de Hema. 😊 the broodje rookworst, next time you have it, put as an extra some sauerkraut on it, and a little amount off dijon mustard. Jammie.
16:11 hahahahahaha watch her face, i love you guys.
also kudos for the great editing!
You will come across the names speculaas and speculoos. They are not interchangeable. Speculaas is the more ancient Dutch cookie made with a lot of spices. Speculoos is from the more southern areas including Flanders and even Wallonia (belgium) . Speculoos are the cookies made by Lostus/Biscoff . It is made with brown sugar instead of the spice melange. A lot of people will swear one or the other is better, that's for everyone to decide for themselves. Both have their followings, but remember both are different. There is a whole lot of lore associated to the divide which is worth investigating at some time.
9:02 they have a mix of those at albert hejin also with the classic rice cracker and the noten inside japanese style its the bomb its so tasty
The Coffeebeans of the Hema are Good Too ;-)
haha i was so close to buying them and brewing some coffee in this video - sounds like i should have 😄
Hi Michelle and Alex, it's my birthday today! This day couldn't have gotten any better. Or so i thought because i just saw that you guys uploaded a new video!
gefeliciteerd!!! happy birthday! 🥳
@@buncharted Dankjewel! 😊
My favorite item from the Hema is their coffee beans.
Time stamp 13:05 filet american resembles beef tartaar wich is raw (and we are editing it by adding mayonaise to it ,the dutch way)
I had actually just eat the Rookworst and the hotdog from HEMA. Its really good, they have the best smoke sausage I know
My favourite thing from HEMA is the rookworst, without the bun tho.
You can wake me at night for a tompouce. However ... not these ones with creme in the middle. I would always go for the ones with the yellow stuff. looks like custard but with a jelly-like consistency. We call it "pudding". Not sure if the English pudding is the same ( because "christmas pudding", for instance, is totally different).
De stroopwafels van de Aldi zijn echt de beste, de duurdere variant in ieder geval, heerlijk❤
Broodje HEMA rookworst with mosterd real Dutch haute cuisine,,,,, love it
Broodje rookworst is my favorite. Your cat was very interested in some of the snacks, almost eating it. If you are spitting out cat hair you know why 😉. ❤❤❤
De worst word gemaakt bij Unox dat weet ik omdat een oudcollega daar gewerkt heeft.
@@haviksklauw idd en daar voor was het Zwan
You should try kokkindjes as a licourice they're soft and some what sweet, but still the salmiak flavor.
Alex, are we channeling some Seattle (again?) 😃. We noticed your King Dome shirt. Great video! We want to try some of these snacks.
always have to represent!
To an American, I describe Hema as Target but with Marshall's vibes and the cafeteria from IKEA or Costco
you’ve nailed it
Goedenmorgen! Groeten vanuit Maastricht, waar ik jullie denk te hebben gezien! Leuk om jullie fimpjes te zien. Ga zo door!
ja we zijn nu in maastricht :)
Ik ben benieuwd naar jullie ervaring!
New sub!😄 Try the ‘banketstaaf’ next time around Sinterklaas or Christmas! I love it😋.
For me personally, Hema to the Netherlands is like Target to America. Only Hema is much cheaper!
The fizzy apple juice is generally for kids at parties and new years eve. We call it kids champagne. But its also useful as a non-alcoholic alternative for people who dont drink, or if you have to drive home after a party, or just to cut down on alcohol consumption in general.
yeah, sadly, the last hema restaurant in Belgium just closed i though...
no idea why hema decided to close ALL of them.. the Gent location was REALLY popular, i think they even would have gotten away highering their prices 20% there!
but it must have been some general management decision , closing all of them in Belgium...
if anyone knows why, i'd like to know..
rookworst was never too popular here, the salty drop of course not either..
even the sweat drop i never really liked, i renember being desappointed as a kid if a candy blend has some drop in between them... i aways read the details for candy at AH, to be sure not to accidentally buy a candy that's half drop that i won't like for sure :).
I actually tried to gave away drop at work in Brussels some 8 years ago, after 10 refusals i decided to gave it away to a collage that came from the netherlands but moved to belgium :).
We volgen jullie al lang en jullie Nederlands klinkt steeds beter. Het leukste blijft wanneer de kat mee wil snoepen van jullie snacks.
de kat vindt de verpakking lekker 😅
When a friend of mine came over from Canada I made sure to let her taste a broodje rookworst. I knew I couldn't let her leave without letting her have one of those. Luckily she liked it.
I missed the HEMA Saucijzenbroodje, which is lovely too!
we tried it during our "who has the best saucijzenbroodje" video -- spoiler: it won :)
Maybe a tip for next time : What we do when we buy stroopwafels is put 1 on our coffee-cup (or thee) for a few minutes so the stroop melt a little bit
The "kaasbroodjes" from the hema are the best.
kip kerrie tip: Next time you get the kip kerrie salad than try it on a sandwich either with a boiled egg (medium boiled so not to hard) and then cut the egg and put it on top of the kipkerrie with some salt and pepper Or you get the kip kerrie salad on bread and put some cucumber on it. Both taste great.
My Grandma made erwtensoep/snert the original way, with pigs feet.
HEMA worst is da bomb! I used to get it so often as a kid.
I need to get one again soon. So yummy.
After Sinterklaas, the 5th of December, you can get good deals on Sinterklaas chocolate letters. We sometimes buy a lot for cooking purposes. Lekker goedkoop! Dutchies love their aanbiedingen and can be cheapskates.
For cooking its generally cheaper to just buy cocoa butter and cocoa seperately, you can also mix the amount of cocoa depending on the dish.
As someone else allready commented, the sparkling apple juice is advertised as "kinderchampagne"
While you had the hema housebrand, the original brand is called Kidibul. It was invented in 1994 by a ciderbrewery from Liège (Luik in het nederlands) called Stassen.
For a while Stassen was owned by Heineken, but then the Stassen Family bought it back only to sell it off again, this time to a french liquor brewery.
My personal favorite kidibul flavor is apple-cherry. As someone who doesn't drink alcohol, i still open up a bottle of kidibul on festive ocasions.
Watching this while wearing my takkie christmas sweather 😂❤
gezellig :)
Ik heb jullie pas net ontdekt, wat een leuke videos! Hebben jullie in Groningen de eierbal al geprobeerd? En o ja, bij erwtensoep hoort een stukje roggebrood met spek!
i would recommend the saucijzenbroodje from the Hema. By far the best you can get in the netherlands.
gotta agree with you there
Most local bakers have better quality but the ones from Hema definitely taste less like ground up cow rectum than the ones you get in the supermarkets
Thank you that you buy at de Hema in Rotterdam. You gave me a few very good ideas what I'm going to eat at Sinterklaas!
The trick with cheap stroopwafels is that you place it on top of the coffee mug for a minute so that the heat softens it up.
If you ever get a chance you guys should try "stroopsoldaatje" which is an old Dutch candy (could be hard to find), and maybe you guys also like "balkenbrei" which is an old Dutch meat product but rather regional.
Rademaker hopjes are also a delicious old fashioned Dutch treat that tastes like nothing else.
Mijn favoriet is het broodje rookworst. Er zit zo veel smaak aan, echt heerlijk! En de mosterd maakt het alleen maar beter 😋
Altijd extra mosterd :)
Liked bc after working for HEMA for seven years I still crave them
that's always a good sign!
For the filet American, add some mustard, chili ketchup, a few drops of tabasco and if you like it some capers, replace the cucumber with pickles then you will have a Martino sandwich, that is in my opinion the best way to eat this.
dankjewel
I like broodje surinaamse kip, which called dese days broodje Hema kip!
Hi guys, loving your foody vids. Have you already tried a "Bossche bol"?
yep - in our den bosch vlog! very yummy
As a Dutchie living in Berlin, I miss the Hema Rookworst the most. Other brands of rookworst are really not the same. Hema has that intense smoke flavour. Try oieces of Hema Rookworst in The Peasoep,..... HEAVEN!!!! Snert with slises of Hema worst. You guys will love it. Microwave the stroopwafels for a short time so the syrup melts. if it the best
guilty pleasure: When first snow falls.... make a HEMA run and get a rookworst.... Been doing that from childhood.... unfortunately ... not a lot of snow in the netherlands
As for the licorice, you should try the extra hard double or tripls salted variants. There is one called Bisal that has enough salt content to keep you going through a hot summer day no problem and they are delicious. Can be hard to find though, you will probably have to go to a candy store or a candy stand on a farmers market to find it, but its so good.
Oh and all the quality licorice is made with sea salt, the ones you got were cheap and probably didnt taste very good.
Njammie, ik krijg er honger van!! In Belgiê hebben we ook Hema, maar ze zijn hebben een kleiner assortiment.
Puddingbroodje is my fav hema food. I wil crawl trough broken glass for it.
i've seen these but haven't tried one yet - but wow, they look so good
OK, so I've lived all of my 40 years of life in the Netherlands, and I've eaten many a tompoes/tompouce. I've always split the top and eaten it separately and never even considered the option of stacking it after splitting it. You, my friends, have blown my friggen' mind. This, henceforth, will be the only way I'll ever eat a tompoes anymore!
I wish the HEMA in Leidsche Rijn was bigger. There’s very little food and mostly housewares . I will travel further to find some of these yummy things.
The second stroopwafels have caramel filling, the others just have regular stroop filling.
ah HA! i saw the caramel on the package but i thought that’s just what they called the filling.
we’re such newbs 🙈
@@buncharteddon't be hard on yourselves! (only when appropriate)
Lol, got a HEMA midroll ad.
Leuke HEMA video. Jammer dat jullie drop niet zo lekker vinden. Misschien vinden jullie drop met kokos wel lekker. Bijvoorbeeld: Haribo Konfektstaven Of Engelse drop. Dat is ook met kokos. En de AH Dropfruit duo's zijn ook lekker. En de Katja Apekoppen. Haha eet smakelijk! 😊😋
