  • At the request of a viewer I am making an update about the hunting idle on my car. It seems to be a lot better, maybe because of the replacement computer? Difficult to say, but the idle sounds good to me now!

    Thanks for the mention! That idling sounds so smooth. Interesting and good to know that finally replacing the ECU was an improvement. I appreciate your response and your well explained videos..... very useful! Once again many thanks!

      Glad you found it useful! Yes it seems that changing the ECU made the big difference. I'm sure the other parts I replaced also made somewhat of a small difference and it is a cumulative effect.
      When I first replaced the ECU it made no difference, it's only after driving for a while that something changed. Isn't that strange? Maybe the ECU had to adapt to my driving style or reset fuel adaptations. Anyway, it's much better!

    Glad to see it running smoother! Have used your thread on bimmerforums and this channel in getting closer to solving running issues on my 1990 520i with an M50 engine, which I'm owning and maintaining myself since March 2021, next step for me is fuel system overhaul. Thanks for the useful content that you're making! I hope that I'll get the time at some point to document what I'm fixing and troubleshooting and hopefully contribute to the community. ✌🏽

    Nice update, thanks for the mention. My car had the same behavior, it was the ICV. I cleaned mine up and it improved, however, the action of the slide inside was still somewhat sticky. So I gambled as the OEM part is NLA. I ordered two known-working OEM ICVs and one new ICV aftermarket with a ton of favorable reviews on Ebay. Upon receiving all of them, the two OEM used parts needed cleaning. One made the idle worse, one improved idle by a fraction, and the brand new aftermarket ICV made a huge difference. I can't stand using non OEM parts, however, in this case the idle is so glass smooth with the aftermarket ICV for $28.00, I bought a second and keep it in the trunk. :) The three OEM pieces have been retired to the "box" (es) on the shelf.
    It's very interesting the DME, it's something I hadn't considered at all. Given the way I horde parts (ha), it's probably worthwhile to find a good working unit BEFORE I need one.
    Thanks for the video update, it's inspiring to those us sharing the same love and passion for these amazing cars.

      Oh yes I remember your thread on bf.com. Hmm this makes me feel like trying an aftermarket ICV too... especially since one guy said his has lasted 16k miles so far. It's funny how many of the listings for aftermarket idle valves look the same. I bet they're all manufactured at the same place.

    • @ClassicBMWFanInQuebec
      @ClassicBMWFanInQuebec  Год назад +1

      So even though I don't usually install aftermarket parts, I ordered an aftermarket ICV. I went with the brand Loewe Automotive. Apparently the brand is good and they last for a while. So we'll see! I might make a video about it to compare the stock valve to the aftermarket unit. Thanks for the tip.

    • @ClassicBMWFanInQuebec
      @ClassicBMWFanInQuebec  Год назад

      I received the aftermarket ICV today and installed it. It makes the idle climb to 1500 RPM upon starting the car. Unfortunately I will have to return it and stick to my old Bosch unit.

      @@ClassicBMWFanInQuebec Oh no! Sorry to hear that... and you verified it was "working" but letting the car idle and then unplugging it? It sounds like a bad unit. Does the mechanism inside move freely?

  • @jameskerherve7487

    Excellent! What a fantastic running M30. I have traced my idle problems to the swiper arm contact strip on the AFM. My original AFM has some defined track marks on the black contact strip and idled ok but not totally smooth. I purchased a used unit and found the car idled much worse. After opening up the AFM cover on the used unit I found the swiper strip had deep wear marks and the idle would become lumpy while the swiper arm made contact at these worn points. I reinstalled my original AFM and aligned the arm to contact on an unused portion of the sweeper strip and my idle is near perfect.

    • @ClassicBMWFanInQuebec
      @ClassicBMWFanInQuebec  Год назад +1

      That's very good to hear, nice work! I also attempted this procedure on my stock AFM but it didn't make a difference. This just goes to show that with these OBD1 cars it can be difficult to pinpoint exactly the source of an issue. There are a lot of variables and they each need to be tested and checked carefully.

    • @jameskerherve7487
      @jameskerherve7487 Год назад

      I agree. These old cars will last forever if you take good care of them but not so easy to pinpoint issues. There are many many variables.

  • @bigjimWA77

    Great to hear. Apparently the ECU has a learning function so with both driving style and parts changes the car (ecu) has to 'learn/re-learn' in some way its timing/fueling maps and how the engine 'behaves'. There is a resetting procedure called the 'stomp test' whereby you work the accelerator pedal in a certain sequence to re-zero the ECU's memory along with the ignition key. Just from research, no real world proof my end. Great to see she's smoothed out and so fresh in that 'bay!

    • @ClassicBMWFanInQuebec
      @ClassicBMWFanInQuebec  Год назад

      Yes the idle is much better, especially when warm. The stomp test is used to display error codes in the cluster, by flashing a light sequence. I think you meant the reset using the battery terminals?

    • @ClassicBMWFanInQuebec
      @ClassicBMWFanInQuebec  Год назад

      Yes I looked at the Miller MAF briefly but thought it was too expensive to get more throttle response. This is an area where I prefer the stock set up.

    Great that your car is running better now! What ECU did u buy? I actually have the same with my E32, it might be the ECU as well.

    • @ClassicBMWFanInQuebec
      @ClassicBMWFanInQuebec  Год назад

      I bought the Bosch ECU that ends in 179. It is the correct one for my 1992 M30 engine.
      The idle is really great now. When the car is cold it's a bit uneven still, but it clears up when the car is at operating temperature.

    Yeh! Good news. It is an annoying issue when it’s there.
    What’s the improvement like with the new springs? Less roll and better straight ahead steering?

    • @ClassicBMWFanInQuebec
      @ClassicBMWFanInQuebec  Год назад

      Good news indeed :)
      The front feels more planted, but I'm not sure technically why. Is it because of the springs or the new shocks and everything else (new springs pads, strut bearing etc)? Hard to say as I'm not an expert on suspension. I still don't know what a truly sorted E32 is supposed to feel like. I had to re-aim my headlights after the front was lowered, I didn't expect that but it makes sense.
      What this change highlights however is that my rear shocks are not doing anything. The rear is incredibly bouncy. I've read up on this issue and apparently it's caused by ruptured accumulators in the SLS/LAD system. I have new accumulators but haven't had the time to replace them yet. I'm really curious to know what the car will feel like after this repair...

      Are you considering adding the factory option sports steering wheel in future? Its smaller than our standard larger wheel and would fit the tighter suspension for a transformative interior change. It is a slightly over sized steering wheel! You can always return thr original in future. Lee

    Ton moteur tourne bien. Le cliquetis qu'on entend : les injecteurs ou les culbuteurs ? J'ai le même.
    Et comment traduirais-tu "hunting" ?

    • @ClassicBMWFanInQuebec
      @ClassicBMWFanInQuebec  Год назад

      Oui le moteur tourne bien, finalement! Le cliquetis ce sont les injecteurs. Les injecteurs d'origine étaient plus silencieux. Le son des nouveaux injecteurs Bosch est plus prononcé mais le son n'est pas perceptible à l'intérieur de la voiture. Hunting... je dirais que le ralenti "cherche" son RPM cible. Le RPM monte et descend d'une façon cyclique.

      Mes injecteurs sont a priori d'origine. Mais bruyants. A mon goût en tout cas. Je ne sais si ce sont des Lucas ou des Bosch ni comment les identifier sans démonter.
      je vois. La mienne cherche un peu son régime au démarrage à froid, mais imperceptible sur l'aiguille du compteur. ça disparaît après une minute quand ça monte en température
