We actually recorded our EP album 5 days before they recorded Cowboys From Hell, for Atco Records, at their studio in Pantego, Texas. While we were mixing, they were setting up the studio. Darrell and Vinnie hung out several times to give their 2 cents on the mix. Their dad, Jerry, was doing our recording and mixing. Jerry Abbott "The Elden" was GREAT! We had to come back to the studio many times for all kinds of paperwork and art work approval. Jerry showed us the contracts they had sign, cover art ideas and the guys let us sit in while they recorded. At the time nobody had any idea what was about to happen next. They were just 4 cool guys who wanted to be rock stars and they did it! RIP Darrell and Vinnie.

Al Jourgensen says that he and his band Ministry were playing a gig down the street from where Dimebag was shot on the same night. In the middle of the gig a group of about 15 bodyguards suddenly surrounded the Ministry stage, and with that he knew something bad had happened. He went straight from the gig to the local hospital to see Dimebag but it was too late, as stated in his biography 'Ministry: The Lost Gospels According to Al Jourgensen'.
I wore my Dimebag tribute shirt into a random pizza shop one day and a cook walking around the back walked to the counter and said, "Sir that is an AMAZING fucking shirt". i think he desperately wants Vinnie Paul to forgive him. It wasn't his fault that lunatic shot Dimebag, but somehow everyone blames him. In life we try to balance good and evil, we need someone to blame for a tragedy because it is hard to imagine such evil acts exist within itself. So we look for someone to say, "it was you who did this". Vinnie Paul lost a lot, but no matter how much of an asshole Phil might have been, it isnt his fault. It is the guy who shot Dimebag's fault. But he is dead, so Vinnie needs a living/breathing person to hate. It is all psychology.

Dimebag came at the right time when Metallica's sound was fizzling out in the early 90s.. It was not only refreshing to hear Dimebag's different and killer solos and riffs but also helped to pull lot of attitude against bullshitters in day to day life. No wonder he was voted by the fans as the best metal guitarist in the world for 4 times.

I couldn't agree with Phil more here about having soul as a guitarist. Lately, I've been running into shit here on youtube that sounds like 100% programmed midi, robotic trash - no depth, no shape, no human element, no emotion.... just flat runs of sweeping notes. It gets old and boring after the first couple times you hear it. I got over it very quickly. That style has no personal impact on somebody like us. Technicality means nothing without feeling. Dimebag is the reference that I feel every metal guitar player should use to make sure they don't forget to keep those important characteristics of their playing alive and strong. Thank you Phil... RIP DImebag.

I am 31, I was the dude that was wearing the metallica shirt at the place me and some friends went out to, and imagine this, i was so young that I never heard about Megadeth, Anthrax nor slayer, and the first song after i requested the DJ to play "Enter sandman" (brutal metal, right?! atleast when your 14 and have no clue about what the hell is up, except Voivod, because Jason happend) was NOT walk, NOR was it Cowboys from hell, but it was Mouth for war. the first song after I requested Enter sandman was Mouth for war, and my jaw dropped, my friend (now a singer in a 70's hardrock coverband) looked at me and said "what the fuck is this?!" and I said "Heaven." Pantera was the band that made me wanna create a Groove metal band (with a bit more hardcore influence due to singer and drummer, and myself secretly) so hard that my band Blazkowicz is kinda like this Cult phenomena we had in the area I grew up in, there was Death metal, Thrash, Black, Heavy, Hardcore punk, Grindcore, anything really, but noone started a Groove metal band like Pantera, every groove band just went for that Messugah tone and we acctually had that tone that Pantera sounded like, Yeah, my guitar sounds OFF like hell, and the bass is WAY deeper, and our second guitar players volume was shit (cuz we turned him down abit too much, he was more for grind) but we did what we tought Pantera did, and I think we might have been the first in Europe to atleast come close to the sound of them. Blazkowicz - 0316 is a good example, I can even offer a bit more to our old stuff, bands dead now and I turned death metal but Blazkowicz was something special to me..

Wraps up this interview pretty damn well. I always enjoy watching interviews with Phil, man!
Damn, that's wild. I always thought Dime wouldve been the funnest guy to hang out with. Don't get me wrong Phil was my hero growing up. I ended up being the front man for a metal band while in high-school, cut My hair just like his was, my first tattoo was a pantera tattoo on my back. But, I always felt DimeBags laid back nature would've made for Alot of great times and classic humor.

@@vanhattfield8292 too bad Gene Simmons is kind of a POS.
Whatever you perceive his character to be he is still a Rock -n- Roll legend and coming forward and offering it out of respect for Darrell is a pretty stand up kind of thing. He did the same thing for Darrells brother, Vinnie Paul, after he died. There are definitely things Gene has done "bad" but these two things don't fall into that category and there is nothing to be gained by throwing shade on the "good" things.

Al Jourgensen says that he and his band Ministry were playing a gig down the street from where Dimebag was shot on the same night. In the middle of the gig a group of about 15 bodyguards suddenly surrounded the Ministry stage, and with that he knew something bad had happened. He went straight from the gig to the local hospital to see Dimebag but it was too late, as stated in his biography 'Ministry: The Lost Gospels According to Al Jourgensen'.
not down the street. It was several miles away.
So Dimebag didn't die instantly?
Al Jourgensen and Mike Scaccia also drank Vinnie and Dime under the table on a different occasion. Always thought that was funny.
Hey RUclips stop hiding my comments. 🖕
I wore my Dimebag tribute shirt into a random pizza shop one day and a cook walking around the back walked to the counter and said, "Sir that is an AMAZING fucking shirt". We then started up a convo on how we miss the hell out of him.
Even when you're passed on, you're bringing people together. We love you, Dime.
I had my pantera albums on random when walking home from practice a while back. "The Sleep" came on and I got goosebumps. That solo is so great. What a talented man Dimebag was. Rest in Peace.
+Simon Carlsson the solo that makes everyone fall in love with dimebag, even people who don't even listen to metal...
Such a damn good solo. Not sure if your privy to a little jewel by the name of "We'll Meet Again"...if not, it was a tune from the seminal PanterA album dubbed 'Power Metal'. Anyways, that solo is another goosebump-inducing endeavor.

You Can feel the love and respect for him in his word . .
i think he desperately wants Vinnie Paul to forgive him.
Chad Hero do you know why the guy shot dime?
Zebra With One Chromosome he said, "someone should beat the shit out of Dimebag". He never said kill
Luis Lopez he shot dime because he wanted pantera everyone wasn't very fond of damageplan because vin and dime wanted a break
Phil is one of the cockiest assholes out there, but he is not responsible for Dimes death.

I'm 24 and agree 42 and after
I am 31, I was the dude that was wearing the metallica shirt at the place me and some friends went out to, and imagine this, i was so young that I never heard about Megadeth, Anthrax nor slayer, and the first song after i requested the DJ to play "Enter sandman" (brutal metal, right?! atleast when your 14 and have no clue about what the hell is up, except Voivod, because Jason happend) was NOT walk, NOR was it Cowboys from hell, but it was Mouth for war. the first song after I requested Enter sandman was Mouth for war, and my jaw dropped, my friend (now a singer in a 70's hardrock coverband) looked at me and said "what the fuck is this?!" and I said "Heaven."
Pantera was the band that made me wanna create a Groove metal band (with a bit more hardcore influence due to singer and drummer, and myself secretly) so hard that my band Blazkowicz is kinda like this Cult phenomena we had in the area I grew up in, there was Death metal, Thrash, Black, Heavy, Hardcore punk, Grindcore, anything really, but noone started a Groove metal band like Pantera, every groove band just went for that Messugah tone and we acctually had that tone that Pantera sounded like, Yeah, my guitar sounds OFF like hell, and the bass is WAY deeper, and our second guitar players volume was shit (cuz we turned him down abit too much, he was more for grind) but we did what we tought Pantera did, and I think we might have been the first in Europe to atleast come close to the sound of them.
Blazkowicz - 0316 is a good example, I can even offer a bit more to our old stuff, bands dead now and I turned death metal but Blazkowicz was something special to me..
I'm 50, and still loving their music.
Im 27 and i never liked them, sorry i dont get the hype
