I love how they made bowser a mix of an awkward silly guy but also an actual threat that could end mario
By far, my favorite interpretation of the Koopa king.
Bowser is wrote like he is in the mario rpgs (paper mario and mario and luigi rpgs)
@@ariiiiiiiiiiiii7356 Paper Mario 64 is my favorite interpretation of balancing those two sides of him. He has his comedic moments, but he never seemed like a joke and his actual plan was really effective and he was unquestionably a huge threat. I have a soft spot for his Thousand Year Door interpretation too though for how hilarious he was, even though he veered hard into joke territory there lol
That's literally Bowser in the games
You mean like in all the mario rpgs
I'm just impressed with how well they balanced how goofy yet threatening Bowser can be. That could not have been easy
jack black was a perfect casting imo
@@DarthZ01 I can't believe he played Kung Fu Panda bruh
It's never easy balancing things out without ruining it.
he just felt like Lord Hater from Wander Over Yonder
He is simulateously the most powerful guy in the world, and also an idiot.
The plot is expectedly simple, but if you grew up playing all the games and listening to the soundtracks then it’s 90-minutes of pure bliss. Dude I got choked up when Gusty Garden starting playing in the end credits; was not expecting Galaxy ost but it’s definitely my favorite
Btw, the guy sitting next to me in the theater was wearing a bowser costume which was also fun lol
it did feel weird that they had peach do alot of work in the movie but she did have her own videogame once so i guess thats one reason why they had that stuff shown
@@billyhatcher643 Nintendo don't even remember that game.
Exactly this game was made for the people who grew up loving these games it didn't need a complex plot all of the callbacks and Easter eggs were beautiful I loved this movie because it was like watching a smb game this movie made have been advertised as a kids movie but it was made for us the nerds who just love Mario
They didn’t earn the right to use that song absolutely horrendous movie
The movie felt like a love letter to the Mario franchise and it was amazing, I think people forget that not every single movie needs to have some crazy deeper meaning and it’s nice to sit and watch something fun and silly every now and then. I’d say my only issues with the movie is the pacing I would’ve liked more time seeing the world around them or understanding motivations of characters. It would’ve also been better to see more of Luigi , I don’t mean as in he shouldn’t have been kidnapped I just think he should’ve had more screen time as he was my favourite character after bowser
Doesn’t excuse the bad story
@@bb3k761 well how are how much is it supposed to be a good story because if you wouldn't want to be honest Mario is a terrible story anyway literally every other week peaches getting kidnapped in Mario's got to go save her like that's not a good story at all but it's Mario and it's a good way to introduce ur characters and get them seen and the idea of who they are before they go super hard into the story
@@TheKingNight37 there is a difference between a basic story and a bad story. The mario movie could have been more moderately paced, but they had to rush and put a thousand fan service references into it.
@@TheKingNight37 Dude hasn't played the RPGs 💀
Yea.
The fact the Goombas look like Goombas and not seven foot tall dinosaur people is an accomplishment in of itself.
Those were supposed to be Koopa Troopas but the script kept being rewritten.
Supposedly the original Mario Movie was intended (by the director) as an adult comedy that focused on Mario and Luigi dealing with Koopa and no romance subplot.
But the production company forced it to be changed to a family movie halfway through production and the director and actors just gave up trying because they knew it was gonna be shit.
There are goombas?
Yup, they sure did for that exactly ONE scene they were in. But I get it, Bowser is King KOOPA. Of course Koopas would make up the main force.
So, either this is one person posting this all over, or it's a copy paste.
I took my Grandma to see this movie. She was the person who got me into video games in the early 90's. She was practically jumping out of her seat. We both enjoyed it so much.
This is epic.
My heart is meltingggggg
That's so wholesome! ❤
She was jumping like Mario
Same here. My kid and his friends loved it as I did too.
I loved how they made Bowser seem like a petty child outside of fights, but when in combat, he's a serious threat and the complete opposite of a petty child.
I loved how they made Bowser an actual threat and not just a joke
I mean, he was kinda like this in Super Mario Sunshine, and even in Odyssey.
that is the best way to describe him
I'll admit that having grown up on the Paper Mario games I've always had a fondness for Bowser and Mario being frenemies rather than Bowser being the outright villain. In fact, I've always had a suspicion that Bowser was secretly in love with Mario but can't quite admit it, even to himself; he only kidnaps Peach because that's the only way he knows to get Mario's attention. It explains so much...

I went to see the movie opening night with my friend, we both dressed up as Mario and Luigi with our real mustaches 😅 We had a lot of families in the theater asking if they could take pictures with us and we were like “Yeah!” We had a really fun time, just us Mario fans watching our favorite characters on the big screen! 😊
Exactly. It’s supposed to be fun and people are way too critical about a movie about a guy who jumps on things. People really have a hard time having fun.
Me and my best friend had the exact same experience. We went into the theatre dressed as Mario and Luigi, and even did the iconic fist bump from the trailer on the way into the theater. We just had so much fun watching. Just laughing, having a good time with our favorite game, just enjoying life. It was the best experience I’ve ever had. Not because it was deep or important. Just because it was the epitome of having a simple joy that makes you very happy and you can have a lot of fun with.
Same here, except my friend and I were both dressed as Mario lol
We got lots of pictures taken and lots of kids going, "Wow it's Mario!" and "Mario you're the best!" It was a really great and wholesome experience :)
@@silhouettoofaman2935 that’s awesome! 👍🏻
@@adzukibean2190 that’s great! 😊👍🏻 Sometimes the simple little moments in life can leave a happy memory!
Most of the critics and reviews low ratings are because of the story, and I was like "if you're expecting a deep, life changing story, I think you're expecting a bit too much". Not because of it being a kids movie, but because it being a Mario movie; not even the games have complex plots, they're fun first and everything else second, and I think the movie does that very well, a fun movie that doesn't need to be the gem of the century
Yeah the plot was pretty basic, but it’s hard not to do it like that with mario
Literally 2 minutes after The Last Wish proved your story doesn't need to be swimming in characters or drowning in depth and the critics are seething at the "Dumb fun" movies.
Hot take: While as a video game nerd I loved the movie, the flaws with the movie are more than just “needs more plot.” It skips very basic items that could use explanation. For example, SPOILERS:
When Mario meets Princess Peach, she asks if he’s a human and then lets him tag along. She doesn’t ask for his name or ask how he got here. A conversation where they get to a mutual understanding would have helped.
Still, it portrays the world, and most of the logic gaps can be bridged by just saying: “It’s the world of the Mushroom Kingdom, there are weird boxes floating in the air because that’s how this world works.” And most of its flaws are hidden underneath a gorgeous world with great, funny characters.
A professional reviewers job is to critique based on a theoretical baseline though, not expectations. It doesn't make sense to give movie a 10/10 because you expected a 03/10 and it turned out to be a 06/10.
@Viewer And I return this back to you into the form of: All the games you mentioned are either spin off, or that storyline is easy to miss in the case of mario galaxy, at best they are neat small snippets of expansion, but the plot is the same: Someone get caputured (Generally peach), Heroes go to the rescue (Generally mario and Co), You have fun with the levels.
I think for an introductory movie, which has to deal with an origin story (Even if almost everyone if not everyone knows who the hell mario is), and the start of all of it. If nothing, it acomplish to be Mario, it went far enough to be a decent to good movie (Heck, I gave it an 8 after watching it, then I went for the latest of Jhon Wick, and still felt like an 8)
It's a good movie, with basic plot, and lots of fun (And neat little details, but this is to be expected for a videogame movie tbh, references on end), the ambience was nice, and the animations was pretty. This is a movie that the plot serves the purpose of being fun, and this aligns with nintendo's policy of Mechanic First, where you start with something Fun, and then you think on the plot.
Mario has depth, but rarely upfront, and I'd love if we got followups with deeper stories, but as far as starts goes, it's a solid one
One thing that stood out to me was in the beginning of the movie when Mario and Luigi are running to their first plumbing job, Mario was jumping over construction obstacles and brute forcing his way through everything, but he also set the path for Luigi by opening gates and setting down planks of wood for him to run across which I thought was a neat little bit of storytelling. I got a good sense of their brother bond and I sorta wish they played into that more throughout the movie while the two are separated. Enjoyable movie though, it was fun
I did like that part, reminded me of playing any kind of co-op game with family. Also set up their bond. I just wish we saw more of that bond through the movie.
@@lemonlebowski1397 SAME
I really saw my brother and I in Mario and Luigi, which I appreciated
Something else is how Player 1 always seems to be getting Player 2 out of a jam whenever the games have co-op.
True dat. It's like someone started a two player game of SMB and player one just never lost a life. Luigi. Caged and forgotten about. At least he got some great action in during the demo scenes. (Before 'the game' began. (Seriously. He went strong to the capture. And it feels like just under an hour went by for his prison arc to re-emerge.))
Bower's song about Peaches was one of the highlights of this movie. It's way better than the critics on Rotten Tomatoes.
When he sang, 'Peaches Peaches PeachesPeachesPeaches
Peaches Peaches

Without context it sounds like OP has ranked the song as more important to the universe than the critics 😂

My only complaint about Peach was that she was missing her signature sweetness. She was one of my idols growing up, and I just wish she had a little more of her signature fluffy, playful attitude showing.
DEFINITELY wish we saw more Luigi. If Luigi wasn't even captured, would the movie have happened? I wish Luigi did something while he was captured, like learned from the penguin king that Bowser's weak spot is is head, or that the Super Star is the super ultimate weapon, anything to give Luigi a bigger purpose than being the one thing driving Mario to defeat Bowser.
Really, really wish they had more orchestral music. It bugged me so much we had all those 80s, 90s songs when we could've had banging instrumental game soundtracks. Give the Kong city a grunge guitar style of a song from the DK games! It was just unfulfilling in that regard.
I did enjoy the sound effects from the old games. I didn't grow up with every single Mario game, but I did love this movie and I'm pretty excited to see what else Nintendo decides to cook up.
It woulda been cool if Luigi was trapped in that castle for full "Luigi's mansion"
A whole sidestory where he bravened up in the haunted castle woulda been dope.
@@lonecolamarine I thought the same thing, they missed the opportunity to make Luigi's Mansion references or a whole side story as you all said, would've been cool
If movie peach tasted like something she’d taste like gum after the flavor is sucked out.
She’s bland as hell!
She spent too much time in Smash Bros Ultimate
That is the result of the writer, the old script was actually about Peach more than Mario and Luigi
Nintendo basicly held Illumination at gun point and basicly were like "You will listen to our demands with no complaints or else you will die"
Given the quality of most recent hollywood releases baring a rare exception here or there, they were wise to do so.

Honestly, that scene with Mario's family was effing brutal.
"You're a LOSER and you're dragging your brother down with you!" Like, that was uncalled for...

After many of us saw Puss in Boots, I think all of us had unreasonably high expectations. Super Mario Bros was serviceable. It didn’t add any head-turning, universe blown ideas where you start sobbing after exiting the theater but it was good fun.
Better than anything Marvel or Disney makes these days and it shows especially at the box office.
I saw Puss in Boots a week before Mario…
I like The Super Mario Bros. Movie more. I’m not saying I didn’t like Puss in Boots, because I did, but I had a better time watching Mario.
@@JayStack5 I like both. It’s just Puss in Boots was such a marvel in storytelling, CGI and humor. I would have been one of those girls lol. I love getting to see bowser's soft side once in a while, like that promotional video that nintendo did for the launch of the switch for the parental controls, showing bowser being a good dad. also I love the occaisional take that shows bowser wanting to kidnap peach because he thinks shes the perfect mother figure for his kid(s?)

He didn't because it's supposed to show Mario's growth without Luigi or something. I hope the next movie has Birdo, Yoshi, and Daisy as well as focus on Luigi like you said (LUIGI'S HAUNTED MANSION MOVIEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!)

What I love about Peach’s character in this movie is that yeah she’s a “girl boss” but she also has a personality and is allowed to show emotions and show interest Mario rather than take a “I don’t need no man” attitude you see everywhere nowadays. It was just so refreshing to see a female lead written like an actual person.
Yeah, she supported Mario while he was training and cared about his feelings and didn't made fun or made him less for his abilities, and wasn't shy to let him know how impressed she was when he fought donkey, she was very nice to him.
And peach was giving up with the kongs, Mario was the one that didn't gave up. Attacking bowser head on surrounded by all his friends was a bad idea that got her kingdom nuked. I feel like they might've done that simply because EVERYONE was complaining, so they tried to draw as little attention to it as possible
I think they actually got only the first batch of audio. The second one clearly has better takes and the final product had the best ones.
The French dub is the best Mario ever, voiced by Pierre Tessier, we can thank him for following the source material which Chris Pratt ignores.
There's a theory floating around that they got Chris to redo his lines, or else they edited the movie in post to make him sound a bit more Mario-y. I'm not too sure about it myself.
My farts are better than Saberspark’s farts
For me, this movie made me feel 8 years old again. I always dreamed of a faithful Mario movie and I got to see one in theaters. I had a blast seeing this with my bro.
I ate what's on my plate. I enjoyed it and I'm not gonna nitpick. It's a Mario movie and it was fun and didn't suck. That's enough for me.
I love this take lol👍👍👍
I'm pretty sure that there will be a movie based on Luigi's Mansion if I'm not mistaken! I also have a small theory that the second movie will have some inspiration from the Super Mario Adventures comic.
My favorite scene is when Mario and Luigi saw each other for the first time after believing that one of them is dead, and hugged. I think how they hugged and their faces were so real and genuine and it made me happy haha. In the Mario and Luigi series, Mario had always shown his love for his brother. It's also odd that they have many other family members considering that it was only implied that they only have their parents. I don't think I mind seeing more of their family.
Charlie Day said he'd love to be in a Luigi's Mansion movie, but nothing's been confirmed yet.
Tbh, I was thinking the whole plot was kinda based on the plot from the comic, but except modified a bit to fit into a movie.
Still a really good movie though
I like how they managed to make the goofy Shy-guys kind of creepy.
I saw the movie in theaters and enjoyed it. I think it came out significantly better than the internet expected. Of course, we all knew Jack Black's performance as Bowser was gonna be perfect. My favorite references include (but are not limited to):
> Giuseppe (voiced by Charles Martinet), a cameo character wearing an outfit that resembles Mario's outfit from _Donkey Kong_
> Pauline appears as a newscaster
> The _Super Mario Bros Super Show_ theme in the Bros' TV commercial
> Charles Martinet as the voice of Mario's dad
> The DK Rap
> DK himself quoting Ice Cube with "It's On like Donkey Kong" (a phrase now copyrighted by Nintendo)
> Pessimistic Lumalee
> The SM64 Penguins utterly failing to repel the Koopa Army
> Blue Shell origins explained
> Koopa Troopa getting incinerated into a Dry Bone
I wouldn't call the Luma pessimistic.

I liked the film. Like most people my only gripe i have is the pacing. In the beginning was paced well but literally as soon as they get too the mushroom kingdom they just introduce a character and move onto next scene. Outside of that peach backstory moment there was hardly any moment too breathe and take in the surroundings or whatever. It is definitely getting a sequel but I hope they make it longer and make time to develop these characters and let them interact more as people whether than moving scene to scene rapidly. Loved this film.
Toad was important in like two scenes at the beginning and does nothing literally nothing afterwards, thats my biggest problem with the movie honestly

Less donkey kong time and more peach and mario time woulda been good. Was hoping for a cliche kiss at the end but in the games he gets a kiss anyways so it would be canon

He took pictures with the kids and many going up to him telling him how they love Mario and wanting a hug or high five. It was adorable and kids were so excited to see Mario!

Me and my friend did something similar to this. We dressed up as Mario and Luigi on premiere day and tons of kids, adults and even a couple of elders would want to take pictures and give us high fives and whatnot. We were both in character and doing the voices all day; I was Mario so my go-to phrases were "you're number one!" and "you're a superstar!", which kids seemed to like a lot. I thought the part when Luigi saves Mario from Bowser's fire was appropriate because he said "when we are TOGETHER we are nothing bad is going to happen to us". That seem to be the norm of MOST families in different countries except western ones. I hate it whe the US make it seem like we're the unusual one. They do the same crap with TP vs Bidets too!
And even then, some families live together even if married, specially in Hispanic/Catholic cultures. Remember ''Encanto''. The family diner /lunch scene is really common here on every Sunday and grandparents tend to live together with the rest of the family. We don't have that ''get married, forget old people, focus on your spouse and change your surname'' mentality on Hispanic countries. We keep our surnames and we have two for each parent.

Eh, I think that's the basics of adapting a videogame character to a movie: take the simple traits they have & use those as a foundation.
Now was the structure strong? Not that much. I'd like to see Luigi following the arc his type usually does by learning to hold his own as the younger brother, instead of being a damsel in distress. I loved how the creators didn't go with the stereotypical "princess needed to be saved by the bad guy trope" (kinda like how it is in almost all of the Mario games. And how it was in general). I liked how Peach stood up for herself and was actually useful. I wasn't expecting Luigi to be the one needed to be saved, but you know what it fits because Luigi is someone dearest to Mario (someone who has known for his whole life) instead of saving a random princess from a different dimension. I'll admit I wasn't expecting that outcome, but I at the same time I was satisfied by it. Peach in this movie is like the Mario Luigi and Paper Mario Peach. Elegant and feminine but very much competent with a little sass I loved her so much this movie Anya Taylor Joy’s voice did play a role in that but she was great. Bowser Toad and Donkey Kong also really stood out Jack Black really embraced it
I like her personality in the movie, but my only real issue with Movie Peach was that she knew the solution to nearly every situation she was in almost immediately. I don't want her to just be an airheaded damsel in distress, but I do wish they showed her to be a bit more vulnerable. It would've been a good way to showcase her ability to improvise and keep a cool head despite being a in a bad situation. That was always one of my favourite traits of Peach in the RPGs.
I wasn't too fond of her when she was cocky and trying to be "I got this right on my first try yes I'm just that cool" kinda character. It was more so like how daisy acts, I just felt like daisy could of fit way better for how peach was scripted to act. It was nice how it started to calm down midway into the movie, and she acted more like canon peach while bonding with Mario and toad. Also during the arena battle her trying to help him and cheer him on along with toad was pretty in character. The ice fight scene was mostly out of character but somewhat in character, it was simply just unlikely she'd be able to handle taking out as many as she did. It just felt like they wanted that strong female role with a cocky attitude. Still a good movie but could improved with peach and to an extent Luigi since he overtime in the Mario series has become less helpless and able to fend for himself to a decent extent, they made him a bit too clumsy.
I JUST watched the Mario movie, and honestly I loved it. The characters were great, the story was funny and serviceable, and the action was cool. Everyone except for Toad and maybe Luigi had such a good spotlight put on them. And the music especially was incredible. I've never heard such great remixes and orchestral scores for Mario.
The Chris Pratt being Mario was honestly good. The italian accent would honestly be too much if it was there for the entire movie.
watched it too in 4D and it was amazing
I actually really liked the movie because of all the little references and the genuine relationships between the characters. I see it as a separate timeline from the games, and in that way it's a good story. It gives an alternate origin to the characters we know and love, and their arcs may have been simple but they fit the franchise.

Plumber collects stars, saves Princess from turtle, gets cake has been the plot of the majority of Mario games since the 80's. I agree that this is a great adaptation and is simple and fun, like the games. You said it perfectly.
It was the most authentic game adaptation I've ever seen. It had platforming, bosses, it made proper use of game mechanics like power ups or pipes and blocks. It didn't need to bother explaining how it all worked, it did a good job introducing it all properly so the audience knew what it needed to know to understand them. The tone fit the franchise, not stupid but not too serious either. It was always colorful and full of fun. The music from the games was adapted into a cinematic format, tons of references. Just perfect.
but if we talking about an animated movie this movie is a 6/10. mid movie
@@jacobg6628 ok um deep is referring to character arc and development here😅 there’s nothing wrong with that. I mean they hint that Peach is from a different world which is cool 😊
@@jacobg6628 If you don't think the Mario RPGs with deep stories exist, then you clearly know nothing about the Mario franchise.
This movie made me so dang happy. You knew that the people who made it loved the source material, and it made me fall in love with characters that I’d only really seen from playing Mario Kart and Smash Brothers.
I smiled nearly the entire time with my sister last night and near the end of the film as the credits were about to roll the audience were literally applauding! No joke!
Right? One of the few times I've seen the audience clap at the end of the movie.

TBH the Mario games aren't exactly known for being very cinematic or complexly plot/story driven, so on paper adapting Mario into a full cinematic film would be rather challenging considering the limitations of the source material they have to work with (which was even more of the case with the original 90's Super Mario Bros movie), so when taken that into account, I'd say this film pretty much did the best that it could, and hit the right marks where it needed to.
Yeah it was good for what little they had to work with when comes to "lore" of Mario games.
Tbh...this movie wasn't mid for me tbh. It was fun af. It is a perfect Mario movie and a love letter to Nintendo itself.
Great Movie! I am happy and I like your review. Love goes out to you ❤
The biggest thing about peach that I'm surprised by is the they actually made her a character, not just a pretty face. She has an actual personality and CONTRIBUTES to the movie. I think we were all sick of her being useless for the last what? 20-30 years?
She has such a distinct personality too! It's really refreshing to see her as an actual person with thoughts and uniqueness that isnt all just "omg i love mario so much!" and i hope future films keep that
No no I totally agree. I actually loved Peach in this movie. She was not only pretty but had a strong personality and skills of her own
I was never a big fan of her, I prefer Daisy and Rosalina, but this movie made me like Peach a little more
I really wanted a princess scene of her on the Throne
@@aiiiia9971 I think Daisy should have been peach she's supposed to be the tomboy of the two so she may be insanely tomboyish to keep up the difference or tone her down
True, I like her personality, it makes me loving her. She was so amazing.

This movie was just fun. The VA's fit the characters a lot, even with Chris Pratt as Mario. All in all, seeingMario, Bowser, and the TF2 Pyro on the big screen was such a blast!
TF2???
I really loved the approach to Bowser. It's actually perfect if they ever want to do a Mario Party movie far in the future. He's evil, but just goofy and soft enough that he would partake in a Mario Party scenario.
My favorite part about critics with this movie is they can’t decide whether the movie is woke enough to complain about or not
Same goes for people on Facebook, especially the guys who complained about The Little Mermaid
I personally liked Peach's characterization in this film. Her being a "girl-boss" makes sense in the context of the backstory she is given in the film, which I won't spoil in this comment. What I will say is that them taking a route where Peach is made into a "girl-boss" (more accurately, a competent, skilled, and strong-willed female character) still makes sense when you take into account how she is portrayed in games. While Peach is most known for being a damsel in distress, she is never portrayed as cowardly, weak, or incompetent. In fact, in the games where she is playable she is a very powerful character: From the mainline platformers where playing as her is "easy mode" (because of her floating ability), to the RPG spin-offs where she is given very useful (and sometimes exploitable) abilities, to her appearances in Smash Bros where she is top-tier in high-level competitive play, Peach is in fact consistently a very strong character in gameplay. Additionally, in the appearances where she gets to have more screentime as a non-playable character (like the RPG spin-offs), the strong side of her character is shown, such as her sassy personality from the RPG games. So all in all, I very much liked how Peach was portrayed in the movie, as I find it to be consistent with how she is portrayed in the games.
I think the secret to writing a “girl boss” characters is for the character to RESPECT others around them, and for the character to be happy. Not all the time sassy, but genuinely happy with life. That is the secret to not making an annoying cow.
I mean i liked it and i hate when they do this forced diversity thing even though ik this was semi forced they wrote her character pretty well so i wasn't complaining i just wish she failed a little more so as to not make her like rey from star wars who never failed but she did a couple of times so at least shes not a marry sue
I think people were fearing that girl boss would mean a woman who would be disrespectful to a man and would be stubborn and kinda of a b. Luckily peach portrayed a girl boss who is kind respectful and being a leader who is not afraid to ask for help if she needs it
in the games, peach is pretty competent and willful, but she's not hotheaded like she is in the movie; she's calculating and proper, she's less energetic, she's playful and girly
it's definitely not consistent with the games; she's written more like daisy than game peach even though daisy is less polite than movie peach
it's not a bad take on the character and she's still peach, but it's important to recognize that she is different
One of my favorite incarnations of Peach is the Super Mario Adventures one. She's a friggin war machine in that. She saw Bowser turning Toads into stone and essentially went the "I'm sodomizing your sorry ass with a stainless steel dildo" way and didn't stop her pursue of him for days, she upstaged all the Koopalings and even managed to save Mario once by almost going suicide bomber on an entire castle. They had to brainwash her just to stop her murderous rage when she was actually captured. It was amazing.
