They succeeded because they didnt try to overcomplicate it. The charachters are loveble, the plot is fun, the dialogue is funny, the music is nostalgic. It hit everything it needed to, and its good for all ages. It captured what the games feel like.
@@_ripVanWinkle_ i get that feeling. But i dont agree, i feel like the attention to detail and the sheer amount of effort that has gone into the animation that it isnt just a cash grab. I also feel like they didnt take risks because it would probably not go over well with fans of the original games. I think in future movies, which theyll def make, try more things and hopefully execute it well.
@@feap0d Couldn't see what he said because he deleted it but I was really dissapointed with the movie. To me the plot and history were beyond simple, I hated the dialogue and also felt like it was way too rushed and way too short, I guess that is what I should have expected from a mainly kids movie
The line “there’s a whole big universe out there” by Peach really makes me think that at some point we’ll see Rosalina. Helps that there was also a Luma that was very obviously used for comedic relief, which gives audiences more of a reason to see more of them.
Yeah, I was a little bummed I didn't get a little Rosa in this movie. Figured we would, because of the Luma, but it's a super minor gripe and I loved it regardless. I'm guessing they had a scene but cut it for time, for whatever reason.
That's what I was thinking too!! When she said that line I got excited bc I thought that possibly left it up in the air for a super mario galaxy movie maybe?
@@hermette5947 My guess is that they had a Rosalina scene but cut it for time. I saw somewhere that there were official Mario movie toys and Rosalina was one of them, so maybe it's another case like that Star Wars character Matt Smith was supposed to play that had toys made for him.
I just got back from seeing this, and my main thought was “how are they gonna portray the Mario universe?”. For as quirky and fun as this movie truly was, I was really excited to see how well they integrated some element of most of the Mario franchise games into the movie’s storyline, plot, and visuals. Many were obvious, many felt like easter eggs, all of it was fun. It was very tastefully done. I was pleasantly surprised with this movie, and I’ll definitely see it at least a second time.
Also, I think Mario just landing in the Mushroom Kingdom through a pipe from a seemingly different reality, and the story progressing as it did was delightful. I mean, the dude HAD to try his best to rescue his brother. If it was Peach being captured, what would Mario’s motivation be, to rescue a Princess he had never met? I guess I could see the argument of saying the movie should have been written differently, but a “brother saves brother” story just works for where this movie was going up to that point. So glad the movie just kept delivering. Bro the Kong Kingdom being the bearer of the Karting tech was the funniest.
I think the simple story greatly worked in its favor. The cartoony action, the sounds and music, and the gorgeous animation should absolutely be praised.
@@AntVenom I also agree that the story works much much better with the brother save brother narrative since they did end up going for the classic storyline. They could have dragged it out with setup and such, but they just took the story we all knew and put a spin on it, while Luigi still gets his times to shine. The fact we saw the kongs all also makes the world feel a lot more alive. I wish they had like an extra 15 minutes to explore the world a little bit more, but other than that it was very fun to watch.
My pastor told the other day when he went to go see the movie with his grand children he saw three dudes in their mid 30s sitting in the back of the theatre laughing their asses off the entire time and that they even left a standing ovation. Something about that sentiment tells me that the studio really tapped into what the older mario fans want instead of it just being another kids movie.
The fan service was incredible and I'm definitely not complaining about it. I love that the original Mario voice actor was in the movie right in the beginning and end.
Luigi getting separated gave us the Luigi's Mansion call back which I thought was perfect. Also Jack Black singing really just solidified my love for this film
and that is precisely what pissed me off. Jack Black needs to learn how to play more than just one character. He applies the same personality to every single role he gets casted as, it is exhausting. Bowser was sooo badass in the beginning of the movie and don't get me wrong I love the humor we get from the soft side that Bowser has for Peach, but was the piano scene actually that necessary? they could've kept the post-credit one, but the first one should not have been in the movie. it was so distracting.
@@butexab spoken like someone who has never played a mario game outside of the platformers yet wants to "well acktchully". jack blacks personality is almost 1:1 with how bowser is portrayed within any game where bowser has an actual personality and dialogue. regardless, this is a children's film and kids find it funny, sorry that silly goofiness distracted you from this super serious narrative (please stop stinking up the theater).
I really liked the Bowser piano for a set drop, but the singing was a bit over the top and went on a bit long for my tastes. Bowser is, at least in the RPG spinoffs, a total dork with muscles for brains. He's quirky and weird and silly, but thinks with his fists and is very much one track minded.
@@Mr5ickness He didn't suck as Mario, though. He was perfectly fine. I don't understand why people can't get the fact that he was intentionally doing a Brooklyn accent.
@@Mr5ickness that's not really true tbf. While I am still mixed on his voice personally, he did surprise me at some points in the movie. I thought he would be as bad as the trailers presented but not quite. He was okay, there's still a lot of improving to do though.
@BlueBlurBoy I see what you mean. But overall, all you could hear is Chris Pratt being Chris Pratt. Like, it's hard to deny it. He literally over hyped it to then when you watch it. Their isn't anything different. Maybe a few tweaks here and there but there un noticed really.
@@Mr5ickness Trust me, you don't wanna hear a Mario with annoying Italian stereotype voice for about two hours and probably you gonna ask the person sitting next to you inside the cinema what was Mario talking about because you can't understand him because of his fake Italian accent. It was a mistake by Charles(The original voice of Mario) making Mario sound more of an Italian than Brooklyn. Maybe Charles misunderstood it and went to stereotyping an Italian guy which is good for video games, but not ideal for TV and movies.
It also helps we already have a strong connection to these characters. The writing doesn’t have to try hard to make us care about the characters and world.
It's not about a "crazy deep meaning", but it could have sacrificed one or two musical numbers and some jokes to take itself a bit more seriously in the way the first Toy Story did, you know what I mean?
it's sad that luigi didn't get a lot of screentime, but i think him being captured works well. if they were never separated then they wouldn't really have much of a reason to stay there, there was nothing stopping them from just going home. it also gives mario a bigger reason to care if his brother is in danger, he's obviously trying to help because he's a good guy, but it's more urgent to him specifically cuz of luigi being captured
I also really love that, because of Luigi getting captured everything Mario did in the movie was because he decided to do it, not because he had a duty to (well I mean you could see rescuing your brother as something you really should do, but what I love about it is that it was purely out of love and willpower). All of it makes Mario a pretty active hero, and through getting to spend time with Peach, Toad, and Donkey Kong, he get's the will to truly save everyone at the end because they're his friends now.
I didn’t like how they made peach a badass without giving her Perry the parasol. I know Nintendo wants to act like Super Princess Peach didn’t happen, but it did.
I just hope for much more of the Brothers being together in a sequel. Pratt and Day have surprisingly damn good chemistry together as Mario and Luigi and it'd be great to get some more of that M&L teamup that we got for the film's climax.
i die for mario galaxy and new super mario bros wii, the wii era was my life back in the day the ice flower made me so happy to see in the movie this is why nintendo is the best gaming indestry ever
One scene I particularly enjoyed was the training montage where Mario goes through a standard Mario level. The reason I like it so much is because it perfectly captured how it feels to play a Mario game for the first time. You die to the most basic of enemies and in the most embarrassing of ways, and eventually, after so many tries, you actually become decent and can run the level relatively easily and quickly. Seeing that scene reminded me of playing those games years ago, and I am glad they included it in the movie.
I just watched the movie and when this scene came up I was like “yup we’ve all killed Mario this way. Yup that too. Yup that happened” so I completely agree! That was major nostalgia right there. 😄
The fact this movie is actually good shows how far we have come from the dark age of video game movie adaptations. Edit: wow I didn’t even know I got this many likes. Thank you and have a good day.
the problem was that video game adaptation movies never stayed true to the source material, they always wanted to be their own thing and i think after the blow out and absolute success with the sonic movie after fans went ape shit over the designs and acting it showed hollywood to stop fucking with what is established and just give us a movie with roughly the established lore and plots. paramount found out with their halo show being a huge bust that people dont like a Master Chief that wants to fuck every woman he sees and shows his face to everyone. maybe now we can start getting some good movies from games now, but if i may ask... were any of the resident evil movies bad? i know a few of them were pretty good, the silent hill movie based on the games from what i heard had an okay rating or at least good enough to earn a second movie, and one or two of the mortal kombat movies from the 90's were okayish.
I was surprised hearing it, but I think they did fit the scenes they were playing on. Definitely has a bit of a weirdness factor in a movie like this, though.
@@MrBDSaint34 That’s how I read it as well, although it did seem a bit much at times. The Beastie Boys reference felt somehow appropriate because it’s a late 80s New York thing. I gotta admit the timing on the motorcycle Kong pulling down the sunglasses with that part in the Take On Me intro got chortles out of me and the audience, probably cause of the memes (like the one where the girl turns around and she has braces)
I think the whole point of Luigi being captured was to give Mario a motive to help bc when you really think about it he didn't really care about the mushroom kingdom at all his only concern was Luigi. In the sense where mario and peach are trying to get help from cranky Kong he said "this is the only way to save Luigi". He barely cared about peach's motivation at all 😂
Bowser calling Peach ‘Peaches’ and playing the piano has to be the best part of the entire movie, and possibly the best thing illumination ever produced.
I think them splitting Mario and Luigi was kind of cool because Mario never really had a motive besides princess peach in the games and seeing his brother ride or die being captured would make Mario much more of a menace instead of chasing the hoes
The voice acting from all the characters grew on me INSTANTLY. I didn't think I was going to care for the voice acting at first but I like it a lot. SPOILER: I like how in the beginning when they made the super Mario commercial they spoke in the accents and basically talked about how the accent was maybe too much lol. But I overall thought the movie was pretty good.
I was also pleasantly surprised about the voice acting. Kinda wish Mario had a New Yorker accent cuz that would've been sooo funny, but overall it was pretty decent.
Oh, guess I wasn't the only one who felt that way. The pacing feels a little rushed throughout almost the whole movie, but I still had a great time. It definitely could've been worse, movies based on videogames are rarely this good.
A little bit younger, 16, and exact same feeling. Mom loved 64 and most of the Mario series, so I experienced a lot of those when I was really young. It's great to see all the references.
the animation was stunning, the music was great, the easter eggs were fun, and the characters were enjoyable. it's a fun film and really feels like a love letter to fans. charles martinet (the voice of mario in the games) playing mario's dad in the movie was a really nice touch.
@Greenkiddd not to mention wrecking crew, the Cafe being called "punch out !!" Toadsworth (although he was blue not brown) cranky Kong, Diddy and Dixie Kong I think even funky was there (or a character like him at least) also the dk vs mario scene had red steel beams and barrels
The music was not great at you crazy. They had such a huge selection of fantastic mario music to work with (Mario galaxy? hello why was this delegated to the credits?!?!) but they chose to go with the same opening theme over and over and included a bunch of random pop songs for no reason. plus they did bowser's song twice? whyyyyyy
Would love to see a Luigis mansion movie done with the same love and passion as they did with this film. Edit: yooo thanks for all the positive feedback on this idea glad so many people enjoyed Luigis mansion as much as I did.
I think Luigi was captured to give Mario the instant motivation to help with no questions asked instead of the movie having to spend 30 minutes trying to convince the audience that Mario and Luigi got attached and stayed in the mushroom kingdom instead of just getting on the fastest pipe back to Brooklyn before the plot is even uncovered. It also fits his more cowardly/skittish personality. If there is a second movie then that is where he will get his time to shine, I think. That'll be fun.
I agree, if it was Peach that was captured, the brothers wouldn't have a reason to save her because they didn't know her but I would've liked to see some luigi's mansion references before he got captured.
Yes! You hit the nail on the head, the 80s music was confusing but the DK rap was hype. It didn't have to be deep or spend a ton of time building things up because that's not what we came for. It was just a good fun time. It had everything it should have, It was a good watch for kids and for adults we had nostalgia and moments like the nihilist star.
I actually like the decision to make Luigi the damsel in distress. While he has less to do, I feel like it's a better motivation for Mario since they got magically transported to a new world with people Mario has no reason to want to save. Having Luigi in danger not only motivates Mario to save him, but also motivates him to help the mushroom kingdom.
Also Nintendo did say that if this movie is successful, they do want a universe of their IP's at some point. They specifically mentioned Luigi's Mansion so he will return the favor.
The lady behind us in the theatre tonight, actually spoke the words out loud, "Mario should sue the old lady, it's her fault the dog got in." I was completely mind blown.
@@Looker0 bro stop hating on mario, if it's in your words main audience is kids, cool. But let people have an opinion like jeez bro. Can't wait for the oh you play this which Is aimed at kids argument coming can't wait 😀
The 54% Critics score vs 96% Audience score is insane. It's so rare you see a movie so hated by reviewers but universally loved by audiences. The theaters must've showed them the 1993 version by mistake because nothing else makes sense.
I love how they included the 3d pixel hologram thing in the throne room. It was the ultimate show-don't-tell for explaining why there's floating blocks everywhere, it seems to just be the basis of the mushroom kingdom's technology
@@musicdz8135honestly, does it matter if it's magic or crazy advanced technology? it's super mario, just accept it like we accept dragon ball characters fly and throw energy beams out of their hands
@@irasac1 those are explored and explained in the series, flight is a technique developed by the crane school and requires ki. You dont remember Gohan teaching Videl to fly? These are pretty well explored... idk why you're saying it like they just threw the concepts at us.
I agree, also what motivated Mario to save everyone in this strange world he didn't know at all was saving his brother, so I think Luigi getting captured was ok :)
yea he can still been captured but there still could’ve been more interactions dialogue something? more character depth? he could’ve been captured alongside bowser or smth for more comedic moments idk???
It could have been that it could have been the Beatdown that happens at the end of the film before the epic hero moment or it could have been those absolutely goddamn terrifying Drybones, sniffits and Shyguys that "surprise motherf*ker" ed Luigi when he arrives in dark land.
I honestly thought luigi getting split was good for showing him and mario are really there for each other. And honestly is the right motivation for Mario
Yeah it makes sense. If he had just shown up to the kingdom and heard that Peach was captured I doubt he would’ve cared nearly as much compared to Luigi getting captured.
Plus because of that they showed us the flashback as kids which was pretty nice. And why would mario save the mushroom kingdom if it wasn't to save his brother? He needed the motivation.
My only issue is that there isn't a central theme for the story. No one really has a character arc, especially Peach who's actually a Mary sue. An extra half hour with more screentime for Luigi would of made this perfect for me. It could about both their journeys converging to that spectacular final sequence
As a Mario&Luigi and Luigi's Mansion enjoyer, it was lame that Luigi was the one that got kidnapped. They wanted to keep the damsel in distress trope that is so emblematic to the series, but needed it to be political correct. It's not a deal breaker, but wack regardless.
Hands down my favorite thing about the movie. Jack Black outdid himself. It was also the perfect way to show how obsessed/enamored Bowser was with Peaches. They played that shit perfectly.
I just wanna say I think the best part about this movie is how they portrayed Mario and Luigi’s brotherly relationship. Quick history/info: In the past games Mario and Luigi’s relationship as brothers is what you’d expect. They’re not rivals but they are competitive with each other and seem to be on different paths. The biggest thing is a Tennis(?) game where if you win as Luigi and win the trophy, Mario teases him by stepping on his shoe. They’re brothers but not friends. In the movie they very genuinely love and care for each other. The way they hug, fist bump, held hands and (spoilers) reunite left a strong impact on me. The way Mario touched Luigi’s face when they reunited because he was so relieved to see him again was incredible to me. He didn’t like cup his cheeks but for a brief moment (blink and you’ll miss it-) he reached up. I feel like we don’t see that too often in media where men publicly display even platonic affection between friends, family, or even lovers like that. It’s so so so small but truly means a lot to me and I hope the way Mario and Luigi love each other leave an impact on my brothers too.
I’ve loved their brotherly relationship so much in the games, the portrayal of it on the big screen was even more wholesome and precious, cried a little bit during their tough times when they split up, missed each other, then reunited
(Spoilers) You’re talking about when Tanooki Mario reunited with Luigi right? That looked like a genuine “OH MY GOODNESS IM GLAD MY BROTHER IS OKAY!” hug. You could feel the brotherly love.
@@amberarzuaga6426 The movie is too safe. The characters (Mario especially) have no personality nor development. The dialogue falls flat every time and kids laughed like once in my cinema. I blame Nintendo for that. And they don't explore the world enough. Why would they turn the whole travel to Bowser into a montage? There's like 3+ montages in the movie, all with mainstream licensed music playing. It is too rushed. I blame Illumination for that.
I think it makes the most sense for Luigi to be kidnapped in this movie's context. If you were all of a sudden transported to some random ass place where a fire-breathing, talking, turtle dragon monster and his army were taking over, and he had apparently gotten a power that would make him invincible, most people wouldn't be selfless enough to be like "Yeah Imma help these mushroom people because it's what I do as a plumber." That doesn't make sense, he has no attachments to them, and it would be dumb. Since his brother is also trapped in this world by said monster, it gives him a reason to care and want to help because he is in trouble and alone. His caring for a princess that he didn't know prior wouldn't make sense, but maybe if they make another movie, they could go that route now that they know each other.
I mean you’re not wrong, but almost all decisions and motivations of the characters in this film are very weak, so they might as well let Mario join them and save the kingdom “just because.” It isn’t the focus of the film anyways.
Not even a massive Mario fan. Loved it, theater was filled with people of all ages, folks were laughing and having fun and, for the first time in a decade, the theater applauded at the end. It was awesome.
Having Luigi being captured makes sense in the context of this story. If peach were captured, why would mario care to save her? He wants to save his brother. Not some random girl in a random world he got transported in 15 minutes ago.
Yeah Charlie misses that point completely and Luigi needs to be Brave cause he’s scared always lol idk Moist will look too deep sometimes it’s not the first time he misses things like that
@@Myfanwy4 what? Why would he literally go save a random person a whole random kingdom and a whole random world? For what? Him and Luigi can just leave in the green pipe makes no sense if didn’t have Luigi captured
@@Jurico_Noes The writers would have had to make a romance-subplot for "Mario rescuing the Princess" to work, which requires the characterization which Charlie praised them for not having. Personally, I think to prove Luigi is brave we should have had a scene where Luigi breaks out of jail himself.... or do ANYTHING besides waiting in a jail cell.
What I most love about the movie is the genuine brotherly bond between Mario and Luigi-- all too often the games use Luigi as a punching bag, so it's nice to see him in a better light (especially regarding how close he is with Mario) in the film. :) Very happy people like this film, it definitely made me happy.
The sound track for this movie was great using the classic sounds and mixing them with orchestral, it was visually stunning and the references it made to the game was also cool honestly one of the best video game movie adaptations imo
Loved this movie. They got so many little details from the games like the double and triple jump animations, donkey kong twitchy movements, and even how they sprint with their hands behind their back.
If my opinion Mario would probably be more motivated to rescue his brother than some random woman he just met or hasn’t met, for the Mario series that’s a really good subversion and I think it works well enough even if I haven’t seen the film yet.
I actually like how they played on the surface level of characters with that scene where they leave the castle and the toads ask who the hell Mario even is and peach just says it doesn't matter; it's efficient, they don't even ignore it they joke along with it
I found myself crying at the theatre. I was not expecting to see so many of the characters from the other Super Mario’s. So much nostalgia, so much happiness . I loved it, I will definitely see it again, but by myself next time. ♥️
As a early 30s gamer couple with toddler children , we are just happy and excited to finally sit down at a movie for a something we all could enjoy!! Can’t wait to see it!
Same here! Took my 3 year old son to watch it and he loved it! There was a reference for every generation. The only sour moment was trying to get some mario merch for my son at gamestop. Usually it's filled with mario plushies and toys no one buys but nearly all there displays were barron. You would think they'd wanna stock up heavily on mario merch for the movie but i guess that would be to hood an idea. I find myself less inclined to go to gamestop with each visit
Throughout the whole movie I had a smile on my face, I loved it so much. Growing up with the Super Mario Bros games, and seeing him on screen was so cool for me. My favorite part had to be where Bowser was singing about peach 😂
The Super Mario Movie was pretty great. At first, I thought the 30-minute sex scene between Toad and Bowser was gonna be too much, but it ended up being done very tastefully
I think they included the 80s rock segments because that is around the time this story takes place. This is Mario’s origin story, and his first game ((Mario Bros) The game where they kill crabs and turtles) Came out early 1980. So they used music related to that time period. That’s what I think anyway
i went with my dad yesterday (he's 41 and im 16)! he grew up with og nintendo video games and 8-bit games and i grew up with them too and it was such a great experience! the movie was great too :,)
I love that you said this feels like a family movie, because that's what mario was aimed to be I always felt like mario is aimed to be a household name
I'm really happy how everything turned out, espescially animation. Illumination is known for freakishly proportioning their characters so, Miyamoto holding them at gunpoint to make them look good made for a really good result.
This is exactly what I was expecting from this film. I have no idea what the professional critics were expecting, high art with a mind blowing plot? It's just a family film.
My main issue with critics is that they rarely, if ever, review a film from the perspective of if it does what it's trying to accomplish. Also, they have a hate boner for Chris Pratt for some reason
Loved the dry bones. I remember the first time running into them as a kid in super mario bros 3 and always being a little tense around them for some reason. The movie captured that childlike spookyness for me.
I saw the film today, I loved every detail of it, and it left me wanting more I also loved that Luigi was Mario's driving force. Luigi and Mario mean a lot to one another, hence why Luigi quit his job working for Spike with Mario, and why he stuck with Mario. He felt ashamed of himself not being able to stand up for himself, and it shows how much of a driving force it was for Mario, he never gave up, and he even fought DK, and won. The movie was batshit nutty and I loved it. The best line in my opinion was, "Kamek... Come jam with me."
@@Tylericous it was pretty good in a simplified way. I just loved catching every reference, and easter egg the movie had to offer. and they had quite a bit that were surprising once you caught it. Jack Black, had a huge impact on how I viewed the movie. The way he brought Bowser to life with his sense of humor, and entertaining lyrics for, "Peaches"...amazing! :) Literal creative genius.
Honestly, sitting and watching this movie was the most fun I've had watching a movie in a while. I just went and saw the Mario Movie. I thought it was exactly what I wanted it to be: a fun adventure with some humor and packed with great references. @@Looker0 I'm really glad she didn't. Aside from being very cliched, why would Mario want to save some random person in a world he's unfamiliar with? In fact, it's a billion times more heartwarming to see how greatly Mario cares for his brother, and will do ANYTHING in his power to keep him safe. Not to mention Peach was one of the best characters in the whole film. i'd argue that having her earning her title as royalty by being brave, caring, and standing up against Bowser because of how much she cares for her subjects is much better than just having her sit behind bars the whole time. Going off of that last bit, Peach is implied to have lived in the Mushroom Kingdom all her life in various trailers. Mario, and by extension Luigi, just got there. which characters sound like they'd be LESS experienced in how the mushroom world works, and end up getting captured by the hostile inhabitants?
Not only was the movie a lot of fun, but the amount of references both to other games and songs from across the Mario series made me so happy. The plot is simple, but also so full of heart and love for the source material
Saw the movie tonight. The references to all the games in the music was incredible. Hearing stuff from Mario 1, 3, Galaxy, and Odyssey was great. Also, the movie is just beautiful.
Having little character development and quick fast cuts to each scene was perfect made it feel like levels in the game. Also got a feeling all that rock music was added in through Jack Blacks request bloke loves his classics.

4:09 It gives Mario a personal reason to want to fight Bowser. If Peach was the one captured, it'd be a stranger, and Mario wouldn't be as invested in training as he is when it's his own brother.
I understand that.. but, I wish they gave luigi something to do besides just rot in a cage until the final battle. Like have him break out of the cage with a wrench he had under his hat or something and have him face his fears sneaking through the castle, learning how to fight against Bowser's army along the way, show off his higher jump, his slippery boots.
Also, The game debut in 1985 and thus it would be appropriate to have 80s rock music to show the decade that the Super Mario Brothers game was created into.
At first I thought the needle drops were weird too but by the end I actually thought it was fitting because they chose songs from the era that Mario was created in. If they had picked modern songs for example I don't think it would've worked at all but because they were 80's songs I think it works well.

I think the reason behind Luigi being captured motivates Mario not to just immediately jump back in the pipe and leave. Although you could get around this by having toad tell them princess peach can explain how to use the pipes and then she tells them if they help her she'll help them
That’s not how it would work either though, as Peach did not think that she would need the help of Mario. So Mario needed the motivation to convince Peach.

The line “there’s a whole big universe out there” by Peach really makes me think that at some point we’ll see Rosalina. Helps that there was also a Luma that was very obviously used for comedic relief, which gives audiences more of a reason to see more of them.

Dam thas crazy
I wish they had like an extra 15 minutes to explore the world a little bit more, but other than that it was very fun to watch.

he did the final version in a few days i think
lol yeah definitely thought the same
and that is precisely what pissed me off.

It was a fun movie, and breathtakingly beautiful. Not everything needs to have a crazy deep meaning
It also helps we already have a strong connection to these characters. The writing doesn’t have to try hard to make us care about the characters and world.
Facts people really be expecting every movie to have mad layers
It's not about a "crazy deep meaning", but it could have sacrificed one or two musical numbers and some jokes to take itself a bit more seriously in the way the first Toy Story did, you know what I mean?
I'd agree but it tried to add deep meaning to certain characters then skipped over it. Why even bring it up?
Totally, not everything has to be essential or releant
it's sad that luigi didn't get a lot of screentime, but i think him being captured works well. if they were never separated then they wouldn't really have much of a reason to stay there, there was nothing stopping them from just going home. it also gives mario a bigger reason to care if his brother is in danger, he's obviously trying to help because he's a good guy, but it's more urgent to him specifically cuz of luigi being captured

The trombones playing the theme made that scene much more powerful
probably because the entire thing was copyright music💀
One scene I particularly enjoyed was the training montage where Mario goes through a standard Mario level. The reason I like it so much is because it perfectly captured how it feels to play a Mario game for the first time. You die to the most basic of enemies and in the most embarrassing of ways, and eventually, after so many tries, you actually become decent and can run the level relatively easily and quickly. Seeing that scene reminded me of playing those games years ago, and I am glad they included it in the movie.

I hope we get more, even if they're just beautiful disasters
And there are also movies that came out after the 90s
Hopefully one day the same can be said about episodic shows based off games.. My god I just thought about Master Cheeks again..
the problem was that video game adaptation movies never stayed true to the source material, they always wanted to be their own thing and i think after the blow out and absolute success with the sonic movie after fans went ape shit over the designs and acting it showed hollywood to stop fucking with what is established and just give us a movie with roughly the established lore and plots. paramount found out with their halo show being a huge bust that people dont like a Master Chief that wants to fuck every woman he sees and shows his face to everyone. maybe now we can start getting some good movies from games now, but if i may ask... were any of the resident evil movies bad? i know a few of them were pretty good, the silent hill movie based on the games from what i heard had an okay rating or at least good enough to earn a second movie, and one or two of the mortal kombat movies from the 90's were okayish.
The 80s rock song in the movie is definetely entirely an illumination thing, i don’t know why they do it but it’s basically in every movie of theirs

Isn’t the Luma voiced by the same girl who voices Ike in South Park?
Nintendo said Mario will no longer SIMP lmao
Bowser singing peaches was HILARIOUS
I agree 😢 men are scared to do this because of fears of being seen as homosexual.
I’ve loved their brotherly relationship so much in the games, the portrayal of it on the big screen was even more wholesome and precious, cried a little bit during their tough times when they split up, missed each other, then reunited
I agree! The affection between them is wholesome and nice to see

His caring for a princess that he didn't know prior wouldn't make sense, but maybe if they make another movie, they could go that route now that they know each other.
good point
I mean you’re not wrong, but almost all decisions and motivations of the characters in this film are very weak, so they might as well let Mario join them and save the kingdom “just because.” It isn’t the focus of the film anyways.

Having Luigi being captured makes sense in the context of this story. If peach were captured, why would mario care to save her? He wants to save his brother. Not some random girl in a random world he got transported in 15 minutes ago.
Yeah Charlie misses that point completely and Luigi needs to be Brave cause he’s scared always lol idk Moist will look too deep sometimes it’s not the first time he misses things like that
Not really, they could have made it a thing where they couldn't go home without peaches help. They just did it to avoid backlash

@@Myfanwy4 what? Why would he literally go save a random person a whole random kingdom and a whole random world? For what? Him and Luigi can just leave in the green pipe makes no sense if didn’t have Luigi captured

What I most love about the movie is the genuine brotherly bond between Mario and Luigi-- all too often the games use Luigi as a punching bag, so it's nice to see him in a better light (especially regarding how close he is with Mario) in the film. :) Very happy people like this film, it definitely made me happy.

I think they included the 80s rock segments because that is around the time this story takes place. This is Mario’s origin story, and his first game ((Mario Bros) The game where they kill crabs and turtles) Came out early 1980. So they used music related to that time period. That’s what I think anyway

I'm really happy how everything turned out, espescially animation. Illumination is known for freakishly proportioning their characters so, Miyamoto holding them at gunpoint to make them look good made for a really good result.
The animation was alright for the most part but it still felt off, especially with Peach's facial expression

I saw the film today, I loved every detail of it, and it left me wanting more
I also loved that Luigi was Mario's driving force.

Luigi being captured is probably a homage to "Luigi wins by doing absolutely nothing". He saves the day by being a damsel in distress
That was bad and there's no excuse for it peach should've taken that role
