Dónal agus Mórag - LYRICS + Translation

- Dónal agus Mórag is a pretty famous wedding song and there are many different versions in both Irish and Scottish Gaelic.
This version by Altan is from Rathlin Island (off the coast of Co. Antrim) the first two verses of which survived the death of the dialect on the Island to be published in Mary Campbell's "Rathlin Stories" (1936). Proinsias Ó Maonaigh, the father of Altan's Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh, composed the last two verses.
The Irish spoken is a combination of Ulster Irish and Scottish Gaelic.
Performed by Altan
Album: Harvest Storm (1992)
Imagine your wedding being so dope they sing of it forever later
Everyone who was anyone was there ;)
My sister’s wedding was legendary. She married a fiddler. I think every Irish musician in Michigan was there. After the venue kicked us out, most of us went down to the Gaelic League and danced the rest of the night away
Mate, I've been obsessing over your channel for the past 90 minutes. You are truly a blessing sent from the divines to bring joy and life into our otherwise bleak and boring days. Bless you.
I heard this song 15 years ago i knew the title but i didnt know how to spell it.
I burned though many iterations of the title
I lucked out 3 minutes ago.
My reward?
This exceeds the beauty of the memory that ive kept in my heart of this haunting and panoramic song.
Finding your channel has been the highlight of isolation. I want to learn all the Gaelic languages and all these gorgeous songs ASAP! A dear friend of mine has played the Celtic harp for decades and one day I hope to sing in Gaelic with her instead of just translations, or English folk. The languages are as gorgeous as the music.
That sounds lovely! I wish I had more friends who would make music with me!
@@NiennaFan1 it's a joy, for sure. We were very lucky that we had days off synced up, so we could make a day of it and have a big dinner at the end of rehearsal. I'm sure you'll find a friend or a group to jam with at some point. :)
I didn't expect mixing of the two languages that's pretty cool
Superb musicianship 👏👏👏 Bravo! Reminds me of my cousin's wedding, we had Scottish country dancing, and my cousin Richard, who's an excellent dancer, whirled me round so fast he nearly hurled me out into the street!
I’ve been searching this song for 20 years! I’ve always had it on my mind since I was a child ! I found it 🤍
I've been transported by this, feeling the joy of the ancestors and the suffering. Just love it. It fills me with longing. Gorgeous.
I've loved this song for years, ever since I was a little girl. Thank you for the translation!
I initially found this song on a CD I borrowed from a public library of Waltham, Massachusetts, and immediately fell in love! ❤
Cheers to your library for having it!
The chorus reminds me a bit the one from the song Dulaman.
Yeah, Dulaman gealach!
I agree
@@gilbertofustagni8348 this is a scottsh wedding sang. as is dulaman, taken from the scottish song...cutting ferns. as is suill a ruin a scottish song taken from a poem in the 1800s.
I love this song. I could hear it all day.
I know, right? I found it yesterday and I can't stop listening to it!
I have sang this song since I was a little girl and now I finally know what I am singing! Thank you for the translation!
I've waited 12 years for this
I've never been happier to subscribe to someone
So basically the whole song is about food
Straizo Sure why not? Lol. What a feast it must have been
MOOD
Preferably with a lot of meat.
Its really about the prestige and character of the hosts. Generous, well known, wealthy, respected and liked.
There was no greater shame amongst the Gaels of old than to be considered a poor host. And perhaps no greater esteem than to be thought an exceptional one.
Thank you so much for the translation and background info on the dialect. I adore this song & have long wished we would have used it at our own wedding (although I see now that it is perhaps not appropriate for vegetarians! :-) )
Aw! An Irish and Scottish wedding 😀💝💖 👰 🎩 💒 💍 song!
What degenerate disliked this beautiful piece of history?
Degenerates There's four of them
They weren't invited to the wedding
Either that or they did go and never got cake.

Will be going to sleep to this song, perfect posting time!
Thank you for sharing this treasure with us!
Oh, is breá liom an t-amhrán seo! Níl a fhios agam cén fáth...
Ní gá duit cúis i ndáirire. Is leor éisteacht leis na focail agus taitneamh a bhaint as na foinn chun do chuid boitáille a ardú isteach i ngné eile.
Is maith liom an t-amhrán seo agus Is breá liom do channel ach ní táim an gaeilgeoir maith ach tá labhraith Gaeilge uaim.
Sorry, I barely speak Irish, but I'm learning, event thought I am from Slovakia, I really love those songs and your channel. :)
Can I ask, what resources do you use to learn the language?
@@lyramorales2020 I use Duolingo and I chat with the Irish in their language if they can speak it of course :) I hope this will help u at least a bit
@Agáta Komanová it does, except that I'm in Texas US, so there aren't many Irish native speakers over here😂 thank you!
Tá Gaeilge maithe agat! Sílim go bhfuil sé éachtach atá tú in ann an teanga a fhoghlaim cé nach bhuil tú in Éirinn!! Grá ó hÉirinn go Slóvaic!
I'VE BEEN TRYING TO FIND THIS SO FOR MONTHS!! OMG!!!
Lived in Cape Breton for a time - love the similarities in the last minute of the song! Bualadh bos, folks!
My grandparents came down to Boston from Cape Breton. We would visit often when I was a child, spending a lot of time in Port Hood and Inverness. My grandmother played this song for me when I was young and it is one of my absolute favorites to this day.

I swear the most difficult languages to learn are languages from Wales, Ireland and Scotland.
1:12 when Sidney the sailboat is on sprout
There were many noble people there
The country folk from Scotland and
The school master, the minister
And the bold McAuley there.
Dónal, ‘sé Dónal, ‘sé Dónal a rinne an bhainis.
Dónal agus Mórag a rinne an bhainis ainmeall.
With hens and geese in number there
And sea birds by the dozen
Of all of it, the favorite feast
It was the chickens they preferred
Salmon, trout, from the Erne,
Abundancy of game and birds.
Beef and veal the tastiest
Roasted lamb and venison
The drinks were full and generous
With wine and Spanish brandy
Still potcheen and honey mead
From Ireland there was ale and beer
We say carc too in gilaki
Go hionach ar fad. Go raibh maith agaibh!

This is fabulous! I realize your to-do list is probably already packed, but could you translate Ní Ag Gur I gCéill at some point?
