  • This is what’s known as a “matchmaking song” in the Irish tradition.
It tells the story of a young woman, Méirí, who’s been eyeing up sailors (and then a piper) over the course of an evening - most likely during a seisiún ceol. The singer may be the woman’s father, teasing her for taking an interest in such men.
    Performed by Celtic Woman

Many years ago in a small village in Ireland near Galway, there was a little girl named Mhéíri. She was a very independent even as a young child. She loved traveling and learning things. She dreamed of traveling far away and exploring the world. Nobody in the village understood her, she often went to the ocean or the forest. She would try to go as far as she could.
Once she reached 14, Mhéíri had come up with a plan to escape her village. That day she packed up her stuff and left to get in her boat. All of the villagers watched as she walked towards the ocean. She was off to Galway and no one could stop her.
The villagers tried to tell her to forget her dreams. She realized they loved her and she decided to stay for the night. She didn't know what tomorrow would bring, but she enjoyed her last night with the village she loved.

I want a life like that . there is always gossiping and people talking about responsibilities and all. where I just want to run away far from the people away and stay happily in a cottage reading books and working or farming .

With Meiri going to the neighboring port city whilest other folks in her village scoff at how she's running off to dance and flirt with the sailors, and the harbor's just glistening with lights as the nightlife sorta takes over. i like to think the chorus of the other girls are Meiri's sisters. They accompany her to town most of the time but sometimes she sneaks off by herself and the sisters go pick her up before dawn so their parents won't notice. The part near the end is when Meiri's sisters get caugth on their way to pick up their sister and so their panrents ground them. Meiri wants to say goodbye to a sailor she meet the day after she gets confiened to her room so her sisters approach her and one of them disguises herself as Meiri while the real one sneaks off. In the instrumental she's running to town to give her sailor one "see you soon" kiss.

I have a little story for you guys, hope you like it.
There once was a lonely siren sitting on a flat rock betwixt a light house and sharp, knife -like stones that pierced every ship it came across. she longed for friends, as her friends in the sea fled the Rocky area, as they were too scared to be seen by the lighthouse keeper, Maria. She waited for months, until a boat came! So she sang. She didn't know any songs other than the one the lighthouse keeper sang, so she opened her mouth and...
*"My heart is pierced by cupid, "*
*"I distain all glittering gold, "*
*" There is nothing can console me, "*
*" But my jolly sailor bold. "*
She closed her mouth. The boat was coming! It kept getting closer... And closer... And... *CRASH!* the boat was smashed up against the sharp stones. she wept. She wept... And wept until she could weep no more. A few more months went by, and another ship passed, and she decided to try again. "This time, this time will be different. I just know it." She thought. But before she could open her mouth, she heard another song coming from the ship.
"... To bring us sugar, and tea, and rum!-"
she interrupted their song and began to sing the lighthouse keeper 's
*"My heart is pierced by cupid, "*
    *" I distain all glittering gold, "*
But she stopped half way through Maria's song. She caught a glimpse of the sailor on the ship. He had black hair, beautiful grey eyes, and a lean, but firm body. He stared at her like no other sailor had stared at her before. He was perfect in her eyes. "But the rocks!" she thought, suddenly going into a state of panic. She frantically pointed at the sharp rocks, trying to warn him. He glanced over, seeing them, and ordered his men around. They had just missed the rocks. But the siren was still thinking about the sailor. And she wished. She wished she could see him again. She wished and she hoped and she dreamt and believed with every fiber of her being. And, she swam all the way to the bottom of the ocean, and saw a glimmering grey shell, and she picked it up, as it reminded her of her sailor's eyes. An nd the next day, she woke up on her rock... But something felt different... She looked down and.... "AHHHHHHH!" she gave out a shrill scream. She tail had been replaced with legs! " who's there?! " she heard a voice out in the fog. It sounded familiar though... A young woman came out and asked again. "Who's there!?" the young woman looked across the beach to see a naked woman sitting on a flat rock, looked just as suprised as she imagined she looked. The former siren began to get into the water, and then swimming over to the young woman. She got out of the water, onto the beach, and began to, stand up next to the woman, and "ouch!" She fell right on the sand. The woman broke the confused trance she was in and tried to help her up. "Are you alright, lass?" The woman asked. " I'm not sure... " "... Well I'm Maria." " Oh, so you're the one I've been hearing from above; in the lighthouse? " "err, I guess..."
A week goes by, as the siren stayed with Maria, telling her about all the tales she's been though, and have herself the name, Méirí. Or, well, Maria gave her the name. She learned to walk, she learned to run she learned to sing different songs, (with the help of Maria of course) and awaited the day she ran into her sailor. But, the one thing she kept from her time at the sea was the grey shell she now called the "wishing shell".
She and Maria were in town, when "Maria!! There he is!!" Méirí frantically pointed to him; the same sailor she had seen that day. So she began to sing. A song about her sailor that her and Maria had made over that week.
"Look how the lights of the town, the lights of the town, are shining now"
And the rest was a blur. She danced and sang with her sailor. It was the most happiest time of her life. As the music stopped, he said "Who are you?" With the happiest smile Méirí had ever seen.
    *" I am Méirí and I love you. "*

The interpretation in the description is cool, but I think of the voices of the other people toward Meiri are actually her dwelling on the opposition people have told herself. I think this is most apparent when it says "The sailors they come and they go, but listen to what's reminding you." Meiri is full of second thoughts about this, remembering her responsibilities (You've got work to do in the morning) and remembering her betrothed. Eventually she decides to turn back away from Galway and goes back home to stay with her betrothed (I'm falling for the flow of home) and decides to dance with him instead, which is very beautiful.
Either way, a really great song.

Look how the light of the town
The lights of the town are shining now
    Tonight I'll be dancing around
I'm off on the road to Galway now
Look how she's off on the town
She's off on a search for sailors though
There's fine fellas here to be found
She's never been one to stay at home
Home you'll go and it's there you'll stay
And you've work to do in the morning
Give up your dream of going away
    Forget your sailors in Galway
Téir abhaile riú, téir abhaile riú
    Téir abhaile riú Mhearai
Téir abhail gus fan sa bhaile
    Mar tá do mhargadh déanta
Come now and follow me down
Down to the lights of Galway where
There's fine sailors walking the town
And waiting to meet the ladies there
Watch now he'll soon be along
He's finer than any sailor so
Come on now pick up your spoons
He's waiting to hear you play them WHOOO!
Here today and she's gone tomorrow
And next she's going to Galway
Jiggin' around and off to town
And won't be back until morning
Téir abhaile riú, téir abhaile riú
    Téir abhaile riú Mhearai
Téir abhail gus fan sa bhaile
    Mar tá do mhargadh déanta
Off with a spring in my step
The sailors are searching Galway for
A young lady such as myself
For reels and jigs and maybe more
Stay here and never you mind
The lights of the town are blinding you
The sailors they come and they go
But listen to what's reminding you
    Handsome men surrounding you
    Dancing a reel around you
Home you'll go and it's there you'll stay
And you've work to do in the morning
Give up your dream of going away
    Forget your sailors in Galway
Téir abhaile riú, téir abhaile riú
    Téir abhaile riú Mhearai
Téir abhail gus fan sa bhaile
    Mar tá do mhargadh déanta
    Listen to the music flow
I'm falling for the flow of home
I'm home to dance till dawning
Téir abhaile riú, téir abhaile riú
    Téir abhaile riú Mhearai
Téir abhail gus fan sa bhaile
    Mar tá do mhargadh déanta
Stay a while and we'll dance together now
    As the light is falling
We'll reel away till the break of day
    And dance together till morning
Téir abhaile riú, téir abhaile riú
    Téir abhaile riú Mhearai
Téir abhail gus fan sa bhaile
    Mar tá do mhargadh déanta
