  • In this video we do our best to explain how Jaco made this hinged ring. He's been making mechanised rings for many years and when this job come through the workshop, we thought we'd share it with you.
It's a longer video than usual so we thought we'd look at the safety catch mechanism in Part Two.
This type of ring is a great solution for those who struggle with large knuckles, arthritis, people who have damaged their fingers, etc that can no longer wear their rings comfortably without them spinning around on the finger once they've made it over the knuckle.
This is one of many styles Jaco has made before and he has chosen this particular clipping style considering the catch he will be adding as well.

Yes! I would love to. At the moment I’m only able to grab footage of what lands on my desk, but I’m making a list. And this one is on it 👍🏻

Who makes your bench pin and saw guide attachment? Really nice design on the opening shank.

It’s a great tool. I made a video on tools which explains all the uses. The company is called GRS tools and this tool you are asking about is the ‘Bench mate’

How do you like the Alex dividers? They made a new version and I think about getting them. I am still working with my first modified pair I got for like 20 bucks haha

What a lovely comment, thank you. 🙏 Also, I’m loving the dividers! They featured in my tool video (I think) and if they didn’t we’ll be doing a follow up soon. 😉

Hi Jaco, great video. I have a question. I'm a goldsmith in the Netherlands and have to make a similair adjustment to a ring. But there are inscriptions in the ring... so I can't saw it in half. Do you have more methods of making a hinged ring?

Great work, as always! Can I do this mechanism in wax and then cast it? Do you have any tips on doing that? Or do you recommend casting the solid ring and then adding the mechanism? Thanks 💓

I know that folk these days do some incredible work in wax so I’m hesitant to say that it’s not an option. I’ve been thinking about how to replicate this mechanism but still think it’s more effective just making it by hand. Just because every one I’ve built has been different as all the rings have been. And as every time I seem to learn something new and improve them in a small way. So in a sense I’m getting better at making them by hand so that would be what I’d recommend. Cast the basic parts and then refine the technical bits.
