Do you make custom pieces for customers or just create pieces for fun? I am wanting a men’s ring made hoping I can put a black opal in it that I am going to purchase soon. Is that something you could do?
@@jacothejeweller I had only one success making settings so far, out of 5 or 6 attempts. Though I have used a few stock settings. I think I'll stick to gem cutting for now.
I absolutely LOVE and THANK YOU SO MUCH for explaining along the way! ❤❤❤ This is a GORGEOUS piece and I have been able to learn a few new things like the outside ring band adjustments, lining up facets, all the little tweaks to make me a better jeweler for my clients!!! Thank you so much! You are GREATLY appreciated!!!❤❤❤
And so are you 😊 so glad the explanation helps. I keep saying that I make these videos for my younger - trying to explain things how I would have understood it. We are all the same tribe here and I’m so glad it all adds value 🙏🏻
How do you stick the three settings together while you solder/fuse them? They seems fairly solidly connected before you even heat it up. Im attempting to learn enough to be able to make an engagement ring for my girlfriend, these videos help a lot!
What a cool thing to do. Good luck and I’m happy that these videos are helping. I tack the settings together using a laser but before that, I used to tack it together with a tiny pin prick of solder to position it before I commit. Hope this helps - Jaco
Why this kind of fusing with thin sheet is made on platinum but I've never seen it made with silver or gold? Because of firescale? Platinum does not tarnish?
It just reacts better. The nature of the metal allows for this method - it creates a seamless joint which makes it stand out. Today with laser technology however, the principle applies in much the same way. It allows to fill joints without solder in just about every metal which is ideal
You know how much the pocket gathers? First place to look for small stones too - I wear mine all day now. Plus all the tweezers are right there. Try it 👍🏻
Contray to how it may look in the video, theres really not much in the way of 'waste'. Filings are all reclaimable and easily cleaned and re-melted back into stock metal. Wax models and casting definately have their place though.
You still need extra metal and finishing in casting and you can end up with porosity which isn’t a problem with a hand made shank. Also even though casting is custom, it isn’t hand made.
Good point Chris, casting is always an option but quick answer is that I enjoy shaping the ring this way. It’s much quicker for me than carving and casting and the metal is more compressed too.
Thank you for the very educational content, congratulations on your work🙌
Thank you. I am very fortunate to have people believing in what I get up to. And the sharing is a gift to my younger self. It’s such a pleasure.
First.
Love following to learn. You have a great way of teaching.
Thank you, 😊
I appreciate it. We just love doing this for just that reason and I’m glad that the explanations help.
@@jacothejeweller Im a youngish goldsmith myself. After apprenticeship I left the industry. Planning to come back next year.
@@shelterskelter it’s a virus this thing. You are obviously infected like the rest of us. Good luck - it only gets better.

It’s a pleasure. Changed my life that. Happy to share it and glad it helps 👍🏻
The square punch for the prong dents GENIUS 😭🙏💓
Looks awesome,
It was a great one to make. I loved every minute of it. Thanks
"I've decided to to it this way because... well no reason really." This should be on every artist's t-shirt 🤣 I love the look of this ring.
Thanks for that 😂 yeah - I didn’t think that comment was going to make the cut.

Awesome video jaco
Cheers - Damia makes the videos awesome. I’m only like a prop really 😂
Love watching your videos to learn. I tried making a few settings for the stones we cut. It is not easy. Your channel is very helpful!
Wow. Cutting stones? That’s another language all together - I’m glad it has value for you. Thanks for being here 🙏🏻

The gas burning that you see is the torch on pilot gas propane. Jewelers do that so they don’t have to keep lighting the torch as you keep working.
True story 👍🏻

I am a jeweler of 30 years and i never wore an apron like that. Good for show.

A lot of waste in Platinum in making the shank, wouldn’t it been better to make a wax shank then get it cast, just a thought.😊

The entire time he was filming this video, the gas was burning behind him. The gas was just burning.
It’s like the Olympic flame 🔥 if it goes out the videos stop 😂
