    Thanks for the tip on using the white nylon bristle brushes. I'm working on a pendant, my own design there was not much room for any kind of brushes to get in on the silver to polish it. But now I have a new brush to use, and I know it will work and I will be using Red Rouge for the final polish. I'm in my 80's but I always look for a better way of doing things quicker. I love your way of explaining what you are trying to obtain, and the goal is beautiful Ring or Pendant. Thanks for your sharing. Keep up the great work

    Hi Andrew, many thanks for sharing your expertise! Question/comment re polishing: being a beginner, I found that rubber bits for rotary tools do perfect job, without need of polishing paste. The only negative side is that they not always can reach tight corners. Would be most grateful to hear your comments on their advantages/disadvantsges.

Particularly which one is appropriate to use in which instance, and when is the right time to use each one during the stages of polishing? I never know which one is best. Andrew, I've been watching your videos, I wanted to thank you for uploading them, I really enjoy watching them. I've been wanting to get into jewelry making for a long time, and it looks like I am going to be able to start experimenting soon. I currently have NO tools, but I am willing to invest some money to get good equipment. I was wondering if you have any advice for choosing a pendant motor/flex shaft/Dremel. I have hand/arm issues that may be pretty limiting, so I would like to get good equipment that will help me as much as possible. I'm hoping to get something for around/under US $500, though I can spend more if there's anything in particular you can recommend. I don't know anything about the different companies, but I do live in the US if that changes anything.
    Thank you!!

    I use those white wool small wheels. Do you think if i cut out sutch a small wheel from a big swansdown wheel like those small wool wheels. It could be more soft for polishing like thoose two small dremmel wheels? I really want to reach something more soft wheel in sutch a small diameter or size for dremel. I ordered now swansdown wheels just for that project because they seem to me more soft cotton material. I am making plastic models. I polishing the clear coat with those small wheels on painting and swansdown wheel seem to me more soft to achieve more mirror polish i think

    Hi Andrew, I know this is an old vid, but I wanted to comment, Thx , its quite a science finishing and polishing
    and its easy to get bogged down with the all the products, out there, (a multitude of mops for a star)t..so yes, its important develop a system , one feels comfortable with
    .
    Im simular to you, i discovered these nylon wheels in Istanbul, they also had some brown horse
    hair type ones, softer, this is my system, its not perfect......lets take a ring, back from from the casting house, after filling spures,
    limited stick work around the spure area, two 3M wheels harsh then the blue,all over, then inside, hard felt with harsh cut, then nylon wheels harsh cut inside and out side,
    second nylon wheel to polish i use lux,then soft fluff wheel, and lux, all over to finish..its not bad for a simple system, and one ive developed through trying most things

  • @Susanarylander

    The white nylon bristle brush which you used Tripoli on… when you did the inside of the ring your bristle brush was already worn down some. Is it difficult to do the inside w the nylon brush when it’s new and the bristles are longer? Perhaps longer than the inside of the ring? I assume if I keep it at 90• degrees I’ll be ok and not send the ring flying? And not too, too fast or agressive

I have soldering gun aswell, but they used more for electronics an don't heat up the full ring or what ever u are soldering. They only heat up a very small area. Get yourself a dremel with lots of accessories, then just hammer, raw hide mallet, steel ring mandrel, various files an needle files, ruler, calipers and that's all u need to start with really. learn how to make pickle solution which u need to use after each solder if u Makin metal rings. • @Ken_Dalton
      @Ken_Dalton 5 лет назад

      Sandra Turner he is all about saving his time. Would take ages changin heads with all different grits, when u can use one method,..most of the time those companies say u need them all coz they want u to buy loads haha. If u were polishi a metal ring on a lathe a few of the different grits are handy if there's deep work marks on your piece.. But I think his method works fine. But u can use that way if it works for u. Think Andrew just likes to save time by using little tricks he discovered over the years. Cheers

Being a complete beginner, I am trying to cut down the list of necessary equipment to the basic starting items and I was wondering what would be the most economical tool to purchase for polishing. Is there another option apart from buying a polishing motor, please? Buying all these things at once is quite a hit to my monthly budget and just the motor itself costs over £100. And do you believe any protection from the particles (dust, fibers) is necessary when polishing with the brushes & compounds you recommend apart from a respirator? Thanks very much in advance!

      I know this is an old comment but you were in the exact position I am in now. What did you end up doing? I'm conflicted about investing my savings into a foredom flexshaft or just starting out with a Dremel.
      People say a flexshaft is a game changer so it's a hard decision to make. I bought a bench polisher for polishing what did you end up doing and are you still actively making and learning. Thanks.

    • @jamesweedman7953
      @jamesweedman7953 5 лет назад +2

      Bee Bee Dremel has a great flexshaft, and it’s not terribly expensive.
      I’ve got one, and I love it.
      I work with metal, wood, leather, & semiprecious stones (as a hobbyist - not professional YET), and I’ve found it handy with most materials and absolutely indispensable for others.
      There are probably generic alternatives that are even cheaper.
      After all, you only need it to hold and rotate bits appropriate to its size, be easier to use than the main motor-body for detailed work, and not break down.
      They’re very simple tools and I recommend starting off with whatever best fits both your short and long term budget.

      If anyone is still reading this, I was/am in the same position. I went with a very cheap flex shaft. I mean like $25 cheap. It was AWFUL and not worth using. I honestly gave up on polishing for a few years because of it. I just this week bit the bullet and ordered a Foredom quick change flex shaft. It's in the mail to me now. If anyone wants to know, I'll let you know how it goes after I use it.

    This video and series in general helped me a lot on the ring process and I’m trying to refine my “process” as I am the type of man to personally make that ring for his beloved. My first attempt was making a pair of promise rings which turned out fantastic and beautiful. I had done a lot on them. From sanding to polishing and using Rouge on them. But after a couple weeks they lost all luster and became more of a gray. I’m going to assume that this was because of the metal types and oxidation. Since it was my first attempt I had used an extremely cheap metal, Zinc. But I would like to know how to prevent anything like this at the slightest for the future when I work with other metals like silver. And I was aware of a pickle solution beforehand after heating the metal. So maybe I had gotten that solution wrong perhaps. Or zinc just sucks in general. But how would silver fair? Does it lose shine as noticeable and if so what precautions/measures should I take to ensure durability on its precious shine. Thank you.

      Joshua Gamez zinc is great and brilliantly Shiney after u melt it and cast it, like super shiny! Or Maybe u worked solid zinc I'm not sure but up point was that it looses its luster very very quickly, so it was Maybe this.. U could use a resin on your zinc after a polish like a clear Uv resin, like aluma Uv which sets rock hard with uv light.. Or use Silver or platinum an it will retain its a shine alot longer.. Hope these helps u out even a little

    How can i polish my scratched ring at home???

  • @tham2lk
    @tham2lk 6 лет назад +7

    The polishing compound is way too far away. I'd place it about 10 cm from the ring, that way you only have to turn your hand to charge the brush.

    Could you post the name of the company that sells the nylon bristle brush you spoke about? I could not quite catch the name.

    Newbie question: Do you stamp the inside with your initials and/or 'Sterling' etc? If so, when in the process?

      Before you shape the ring, when it is flat, you can you a straight stamp. Once the ring is formed into a ring, you can use a curved stamp.

      As soon as, you can get it lasered on after polishing if needs be but getting it stamped prior is the preferred method
