    cbilton.creator-spring.com A subject I should have covered sooner as its an essential part of finishing jewellery... polishing!
    I have a lot of experience polishing jewellery and it would simply be impossible to cover everything I know in one video so this upload will be the first of regular videos covering the art of polishing.
    I cover the basics here, talking about the polishing motor, the mops plus other utensils needed to polish different parts of jewellery and while Im showing how I polish a ring shank I explain a few things about how to hold and move it against the mop.
    / @diamondmounterbites8861
    Check out the new Diamond Mounter side channel!
    Its called 'Diamond Mounter Clips'
    Its compiled of short clips taken from previous videos to
    highlight useful techniques and information I was teaching.
    No intros, no outros just straight to the essence of what
    was useful in the video!
    I am now on Patreon!
    Im really enjoying making the these educational videos but each one takes a great deal of time and effort.
    To help support the channels continuation and growth I would be extremely grateful if you'd consider becoming a patron!
    With nearly 25 years of knowledge gained in the jewellery trade working with some of the best diamond mounters in the UK I can train practitioners of jewellery making, up to and far beyond the skill level found in normal High Street jewellers workshops.
    There are 3 tiers to choose from,
    Supporter, Classic and Official.
    Become a classic patron you will not only be able to view part 2 of full instructional guides but also be thanked personally on the next RUclips upload! You will also have access to all future uploads 2 weeks before they go public on RUclips.
    Official patrons have all the benefits of a classic patron but also gain access to regular exclusive content. Behind the scenes, personal jewellery projects I'm working on, I share ideas for future videos, photos and stories from throughout my career as a professional jeweller.
    Also Official patrons are welcome to suggest ideas for future videos and contact me anytime if they need advice for their own jewellery making endeavors.
    Classic patronage is just £5 a month and to become Official costs only £10 a month making Diamond Mounter patronage by far the best value way to gain access to online jewellery making courses.
    As the number of full instructional guides continues to grow the value will be even more considerable.

    There is now an entry level tier which costs just £1 a month.
    Its named the supporter tier which allows you to support the channel with out any substantial financial obligation. I will thank you personally on the next Diamond Mounter video uploaded.
    I have been lucky enough to have been taught by some of the UKs most accomplished diamond mounters and my ambition is to share what I have learned through out my career to as many people as possible.
    My vehicle to do this is the Diamond Mounter RUclips channel.

    Scratched safety goggles: you can use cleaner/polishing liquid for motorcycle windshields to clear the scratches out and get rid of the "fog" that forms. Also good for your car's headlight lenses. It takes some rubbing with a cotton cloth, like an old tee shirt, so it takes a bit of work, but it is very effective on clear plastic.

    My hard and fast is based on material.
    In silver, 400 800 1200 sanding then green rouge and then red rouge.
    White gold file, 400 grit, 800, 1500, green rouge, black rouge.
    Yellow. Same as silver but you can just do 400 800 and then green and red rouge.

      I do wash jewelry between the different grits of polish - I was taught that if you polish with tripoli, then polish with rouge without washing the tripoli off, the tripoli residue will contaminate your rouge buff, and the tripoli will scratch your rouge polishing job, making kind of a "satin" finish, rather than a mirror finish. I also wash it again thoroughly at the finish.
      To wash it, I use a "jeweler's soap" made from ammonia and liquid dish soap/detergent. I don't put it in the ultrasonic, I just use a very soft toothbrush. The jewelers soap is also good at getting the tripoli and rouge off your fingers, and other gear, because it cuts the grease. The ammonia does smell bad tho.
      Polishing is a process of taking out rough scratches by making finer scratches, so you move from rough grits to finer grits. Not cleaning the rough polish off before going to the finer polish seems like taking a step backwards, to me. But I have not made as much jewelry as Chris has, so...different opinions. So this is just my two cents.

    Hi Chris love your videos and find them very informative. But this one has me a bit worried. You are so precise and careful in your other videos but in this one you are mixing mops with different polish grades in the same container and not cleaning between different grades of polish. I have always thought that if you go from one grade to another without cleaning you can contaminate mops from both piece and hands, which can result in a diminished finish. What are your thoughts on this?

    • @DiamondMounter
      @DiamondMounter  3 года назад +1

      Probably sounds sensible to be more careful to not mix up the mops and polish but as for cleaning inbetween stages of polishing Ive never heard of anyone doing that.

    Hey! If I see stain marks on the piece of silver jewellery after polishing? What am I doing wrong?:)

    • @8866ryfxd
      @8866ryfxd 3 года назад +1

      Cover your whole piece with flux before anealing and soldering, stain marks are just cuprous oxides which are created when you heat up the piece to the right temperature, flux prevents oxidation. Ofcourse remember do pickle the piece, most of the times 30% sulphuric acid works best. If done right you would get very little stain marks. Stain marks can be polished out with more abrasvie pastes (e.g. green paste).

      Heard someone say something about to much heat from the polishing, but prehaps only on lower grade silver. I've had the probl on things made from sterling silver spoons.

    • @8866ryfxd
      @8866ryfxd 3 года назад +1

      @@CONEHEADDK that is right, silver cutlery was / is usually made out of 800 silver alloy. So the more copper in alloy the more cuprous oxides will be created. Polishing won’t heat up the piece to a point where copper would start oxidizing.

      Like dull grey patches? Its called fire scale or fire stain. Silver is prone to it. The black bristle brushes with tripoli compound polish removes it quite well. Basically just polish over it harder!

    Why do my bronze rings keep tarnishing so quickly after I polish like

    • @DiamondMounter

      Iv never worked with bronze i dont know much about it sorry

    • @allanfink6138
      @allanfink6138 2 года назад

      Bronze and brass are both alloys made out of copper, zinc, and tin. Bronze has more tin so it is harder and more brittle than brass. But it is the copper in the bronze that is tarnishing. Tarnish is copper's form of oxidation, similar to how iron objects oxidize or "rust". There are many things in the air that will cause tarnish, including moisture and air pollution, so it is kind of a losing battle to put a very highly polished shine on copper, bronze or brass objects, UNLESS you master the art of "patina". Patina is the art of using chemicals to control the oxidation of copper/brass/bronze objects. For instance the Statue Of Liberty in New York City is copper, but it has a blue/green patina. You can research "patina on copper and bronze" and find many colorful examples.
      Some art craft fair jewelers have had some luck dipping their copper/brass/bronze works in lacquer, (clear fingernail polish) which will keep the air off the polished finish, but lacquer is not permanent and will wear off over time.
