    Fonteyn and Nureyev made history and blew open all the locked doors to aspiring dancers who wanted, wished for, and dreamed of becoming prima ballerinas and premier danseurs. It was the hand of God that brought them together.

    I had the great fortune to see Nureyev and Fontaine dance this very ballet at the Met in New York in the 1960s. I was little more than a child, and It is burned into my memory as though I were 9 again and very sad that Odette lost her love. I was already a student, though I became too tall in later years and had too many curves to suit a Balanchine ideal for a dancer. I've remained a fan of dancers beyond count. I particularly applaud Misti Copeland for blazing a trail for dancers who don't have the "right" body type for ballet. She is enchanting., Aurelie Dupont, Misha of course whom I know personally, Monica Mason- the list goes on and for every principal dancer there are a thousand who are blessed to reach the corps de ballet and are not chosen to "move up" within ballet's more competitive side. Ah to be young again and able to dance. Brava!

    A coupling made in heaven. They complement each other so well, and you believe the story they are telling. Many of today's dancers put technique over performance, which should include emotion without histrionics and hyper extensions, involving the slowing down of tempo to produce them. There is an intangible about Fonteyn and Nureyev. Everything they do seems so right, almost like the standard. Thank goodness for these recordings.

    Technique is better now because they redesigned the points shoe! And the materials used to protect the toes. Pointe shoes used to have a tiny box, which didn’t allow them to make the turns they do now. The shoes were redesigned with bigger boxes, more stable materials and dancers usually modify their shoes for best fit, comfort and flexibility.
    Rudolf was just a force of nature. He was born to dance. She was also much older than he was. In her 40s when she danced here.

    I’m very happy to have found this channel. I think there is too much emphasis today on technique and athleticism. Artistry is diminished in favour of hyper extensions etc which to my eyes are not always attractive. The partnership of Fonteyn and Nureyev was a “partnership made in heaven” to quote the English critic Mary Clarke. Certainly, the stars were aligned in that Nureyev came to the West at just the right time. Are there better technical dancers today? Of course, there were in his own day. Didn’t he say, “if you think I’m good, you should see Soloviev.” But he was the first, and for me the last. I’ve never seen a dancer like him and I doubt I ever will.

      If you are meaning by hyper extensions, the vertical splits by ballerinas these days, I totally agree: I think that they are ugly. Some are more extended than vertical and to me they look horrible. Perhaps it was a good idea to extend that way to some extent, but it is tooooo far IMO!

    A beautiful production in terms of scenery and expression, but how much the dancers' physical abilities have evolved since then. And Nureyev's choreography lacks the fire of the original version, especially in the dance of the black swan

    • @retrotheatretv
      @retrotheatretv  Год назад +11

      Thank you for your comment! I do agree that physical ability has evolved, not only for ballet dancers but in a general way of living around the world. I am sure if Nureyev or any other dancers from that time were training in current requirements, they would be doing just as well as they did in their time. But remember that ballet is an art form where we connect on an emotional level, not only on the dancers' physical abilities. And that's why when we watch Fonteyn and Nureyev dancing, we experience those beautiful emotions!
      Thank you for watching my posts!🙏🎵💖🩰

      @@retrotheatretv I reconsidered what you wrote. And I looked again at Nureyev and Fontayn in this ballet and compared it to today's ballet performances. Today's top dancers have both artistic ability and expression. Take a look at Friedemann Vogel or Petra Conti, for example.
      I definitely agree with you that Nureyev and Fontayn would have achieved the same skill level with the appropriate training. In any case, it's a pleasure to see the two dance. But I miss the fire of today's dancers.

      I understand what you are saying! With all great young and extremely talented ballet performers nowadays, no one will have what the Fonteyn and Nureyev have had, the time of the last century with the uprising the ballet, the eastern world (young man from Soviet Union) collided with western world (older mature established western women), where they are both enhanced each other lives, though friendship, partnership, workmanship and brought all that to their emotional performances!
      That what I see! 🙏

      Hunting was always a recreation of the aristocracy, as they possessed the land. And swan meat was reserved for royalty. This tradition survives in the fact that in the UK, all wild swans still belong to the crown.
