Great video Slade! I've been a big supporter of thermostat and flaps for a long time. Almost every engine I've torn apart has had the flaps removed, you know cause people "know better than the engineers that designed it" 😄
this is a little part at the engine that kill or make the life off it. a lot off them letting it out, but i will put it on. if they made it from the factory on, there is a reason and you just explained fully why. very good video and can't wait for the next video.
Well I’ve been running my bus engine that is around 30 years old and was run daily until 2 years ago. Of course it has the thermostat and the flaps and still has 120psi on all 4. It’s cold here in England, I doubt the engine would have lasted that long from having no thermostat and over cooled from short journeys. What’s not to like about thermostats?
I watched the earlier video on this and last fall I picked up an original German thermostat with bracket for $5 at swap meet ...just to have an extra ... although haven't tested it yet...BTW this is good video on it too thanks for going further in depth with this
Good stuff. I tested my old thermostat with a hair dryer to establish a baseline after I bought my car. It didn't expand and was absolutely filthy with oil and road grime. Cleaned it up only to find the ribs were split. Bought one of those spring/wax types, but switched it out after finding out about the failing in the closed position design. So happy that videos like yours are out there. Sticker order placed.
I am in a much cooler climate --- but --- I am up to temperature -- and my Flaps are open --- received your video without a drop in degree -- it will be filed for future reference ---- Thank You for the video --- I like THAT SHIRT ---- where did you get that shirt ---as if I didn't know ---- Have a Good One ------- RODNEY
A heat gun or hair dryer is also great for testing the thermostats. It looked like the thermostat in the video was a type 3 heater thermostat. I was wrong. The type 3 is taller.
I just watched one of your amazing videos from a year ago. Could you tell me what the reverse wire is for that was hooked to hot on the coil? My 72 super beetle doesn't have that hooked up. One more thing. A harbor freight motorcycle jack would be perfect for dropping vw engines. 👍
The reverse wire should come from your transmission switch, up to your coil. And when you put the vehicle in reverse it activates the switch. Which kicks on your reverse lights.
I’m sorry I did not see this until now. I had it Sunday night. If all goes well I will place something on the community tab here on RUclips when the next chat will be.
I took mine out 35 years ago when I rebuilt engine and nave driven over 75000 miles. No problem. IBBUGN
Another great video. You are my go-to guy for help with my V-Dubs. Thank you!

Absolutely Nate, they had it there for a reason. Some people don’t like using them I’m not sure why.

Thank you my friend, I hope that you have been doing very well.
The water test can be done with room temp water instead of blowing on it, thank you for that demo

I love how you do your videos. Great job.
Thanks for the video.
Nice job, the thermostat is also linked to the oil bath air filter to provide pre heat to carb, would like to known more on this set up.
Great advice brother.. your getting good at that camera work..
Thank you!

Good find!
If it's short when cold -it should be good working order.
Always love watching your videos.

Sweet!!! That’s awesome

Very nice
My engine doesnt have a termostat is it normal???
Wow, it should have had the thermostat from the factory. Somebody probably has removed it

I used to use the hairdryer, then I got curious about the exact temperature. I think half the time i look for a reason just a mess around lol

The HF motorcycle jack works great for dropping vw engines. I use one. Look in the service manual for the reverse wire diagram.
@@vintage76vipergreenBeetle I lost that manual when my dad passed away.
Been meaning to get another.
Just thought I would ask.
Thank you .

Is there a chat tonight at 9 o’clock?

Thermostat contains Either. Break one and you will smell it.
When he said it opened at 160° l figured it would be ethonal or methonal. Methonal boils at 160, methonal at 140, (I love brewing sprits)
