  • After an epic series against Ireland at home it was time for the South African Springboks to welcome Portugal to their shores.
At Toyota Stadium in Bloemfontein in the Free State a Springbok team with plenty of debutants in the match team would be up against the very spirited Portugal team currently ranked 15th in world rugby.
In this Post Game Show episode of Inside Rugby with Mark I take an in depth look at the game and share my views on the things I saw happen.

Had my eye on Portugal since the world cup where they had some absolutely cracking games against the other minnows. When they came home hundreds of people were at the airport to greet them and they didnt even get out of the group! Thats real love.
They play very kinetic, absorbing rugby which is a breath of fresh air and a joy to watch. Really hope they stick with it and keep climbing. Some of their tries against south africa were sick.

Looking at points scored in second half vs the first. Shows that converting your tries makes a big difference to all the die hard Manie fans out there. SFM👑10

Thank you Mark for your customary excellent and balanced reportage. You have now become my "go-to" for your assessments of the teams both before and after each match. I expect to follow closely your commentary on the matches between the four Southern Hemisphere teams during the forthcoming championships. I suspect that it will once more be a shoot-out between the two best teams, the Springboks and the All Blacks. Keep up the good work. You definitely have a fan here!

The Portuguese fans didn't have to travel, they live there. We have a very big Portuguese community in South Africa.

Portugal side of the stadium? With the former Portugese colonies of Angola and Mozambique as neighbours South Africa's has got a huge Portugese expat community who was in full attendance on Saturday. Many of them wore Springbok yerseys but with Portuguese scarfs and headgear.

Pollard and SFM immediate solution at 10, with SFM defunitely the future, Libbok will always be handy on the bench as he and SFM can slot in anywhere in the backlinr

I like to see Portugal progress since we played them in the world cup. The Springboks they know what to do the mistakes they need to rectify 👍🏉👍

I think Shasa put Libbock away also clearly an attacking solid flyhalf better suited for this position than fullback.
I am worried about our urgency to protect the ball at breakdowns, still slow there with support. First tier teams will punish us in this area.
Discipline is still a huge concern. Am did an excellent job covering both center positions.
Moerat and Roos did not exactly shoot the lights outs, but all in all the debutants did a good job with what was infront of them which is not a good dipstick. Roos did show that Kwagga is not a starting No8. I would have expect more albeit 1 man down which also compromised defence.
Rassie said this team was just as good as the team which played Ireland. What I will say is that if Morne, Shasha and Roos played in that team, we would have won. Rassie will have to give attention to discipline, breakdown defence in particular and decrease handling mistakes. Thank you Mark, enjoyed your insights.

I think another black mark has come against the boks yesterday with a third bok being banned for 4 years. This is bad for rugby and it seems to be happening to one team in particular.
But yes great for the game and Portugal were a breath of fresh air and a real positive the game…

It happened to Wales 4 weeks ago, dont come try here to isolate us from the matter. Its judt a reflection of how Transparent South Africa is about drug testing..and once again, it was someone who hasnt been playing for the springboks for years.

@davidwalker2402 I stand to be corrected but from your lazy comment I would hazard a guess you know nothing about Sbu NKOSI's personal life, nor the troubles of the other recent positive, being, Elton JANTJIES. This is not at all about the Springboks having a problem, this is about individuals and mental health, pressures and expectations. There is a fair bit in my thought process about why I think certain individuals are ending up this way but it's not for a public platform to be said why. Im assuming you are not South African, but i do take outside opinions with a grain of salt due to a complete lack of understanding about SA (that's noones fault, just the facts of the matter).

@bl2944 throwing my two cents worth in. I am currently conducting research for my next book which is focused on the current doping / drugs issues in world sport. It is a very complex issue, with many connections to mental health issues being one of the many factors involved. Over 80 countries currently have athletes banned and not eligible for competition for at least two years because of a variety of banned substances being taken. Implications of coaches, staff , doctors, and even federations involvement is widespread and in many situations athletes are not acting alone.

@@insiderugbywithmark drugs are in every sport worldwide thats true. But drugs in SA rugby is endemic there are no reports of drug use in rugby to the extent we see in SA today , and thats because its policed better in. Other countries and there is a will not to have drugs in our sport. I believe SAs World Cup success is tarnished by this .

@@insiderugbywithmarkI very much look forward to that. And if that highlights issues within the SA system that don't seem to be present elsewhere then I'll accept and welcome those findings as it will be research-based and not a mere opinion as some enjoy throwing around. I've got my own opinions but don't state them as fact. And I would hope any of your findings will lend weight to pushing for tighter regulations. It is concerning to me that within SA's positives a particular trend appears to be emerging at the moment though, and I think that's due to a unique and more modern-day complexity. I'll keep watching your channel and enjoying everything you put out. Thanks Mark
