They would have killed these people regardless.

I read that his sentence was 13 years because they could only prove, without a shadow of doubt, that one of the 4 men was murdered by him (although 13 years is still low for one murder). The rest of the deaths (that were not caught on video) cannot be punished by law, because there is no proof of them (although I have no doubt that they happened).
The most infuriating thing is that the rest of the crew were not charged, considering that what can be seen of them in video does not match their stories of "the captain made us do it", it is quite obvious that they were part of what happened, and that they had the same sadistic intentions.

It’s not even 100% confirmed that every attacked vessel had drugs on it either. The only thing bringing up the theory does is give a reason as to why those vessels were in international waters to begin with.
But regardless of why those ships were in those waters, it doesn’t change the fact that the captain’s actions (and the actions of the laughing crew) were wrong. Those small ships could be carrying a crew full of Hitlers and it’d still be wrong, there’s no justification for what they did.

Because the captain and his crew were a bunch of pirates themselves, eliminating potential competitors would technically always be better for them in the long run since crimes committed in the vast ocean are hardly ever investigated and even if they are the actual chance of the culprit getting caught is next to nil. Besides it's heavily implied that the killing of those 4 unfortunate men was part of a snuff film attempt to earn more cash, so they were essentially killing two birds with one stone by choosing to kill those poor souls
