I've got a WRB VB, and I prefer the black much better than this. The rear bumper is a whole different story, but the black on blue sides is where it's at for me.
I prefer the black much more, but I've seen a few color matched ones that looked good. Depends on the color of the car. My issue with these, and the bulk of paint matched flares, is that bottom piece of the fender that touches the fog light housing should not be paint matched. It flows with the side skirts and should be left black like the side skirts. Visually, it is not part of the flare.
I definitely prefer the flares to be paint matched, but I agree, even when paint matched they are still kind of a kludge. Kind of like those aftermarket stick-on widebody kits. In a perfect world there would be no wheelwell cladding there at all and it would just be smooth sheetmetal.
Ill be honest and i havent really cared for the styling of this one but the painted flares make a huge difference. The flat black cladding gave it a late 90s suzuki vibe. Made it look cheap. Im liking it more now for sure! My love is still for the evo though lol
You are making want to swap mine out now. I actually dont mind the black plastic look, its a nice contrast with the white color I have. Time will tell when whether I switch or not. Anyways...GREAT CONTENT AS ALWAYS!!
The STI started in 2 cranks of of the key this time. The wheels flares are dope!! If you compare the paint matched flares from the VB chassis to the VA chassis you'll notice that the VB chassis has an Octagon shape versus the VA chassis having a smooth round shape. The VA chassis fender flares look so much better.
The other option to tie the flat black side skirts in with the front and rear bumper would be to take what mat’s thought was a two piece on the front lower part of the front cover and tape it off at the line and flat black it. It would carry the the flat black and piano black layers all the way around, and it would be a lot cheaper than having the skirts color matched.
Yeah this is what you should do, I've seen people paint the side skirt and imo it looks weird because then it becomes to uniform. Just paint the small part of the flare that goes onto the bumper black.
Was not a fan hated it but now looking at with it everything you have done to it. I’m starting to actually like it. The rear is still an eye sore but it looks way better now
Dang never been so early haha! I’ve been watching this series since you started it (and other ones) honestly, I love how it looks with the paint matched sides but I think it all depends on your wheels and stance! It works for your build perfectly and your build and videos are such an inspiration! Keep at it man! Much love!
The cladding has grown on me and now the paint matched looks weird to me. I'm glad you made this video because now I know for sure I am going to just keep the plastic cladding on mine.
I think you guys might be a little crazy. The paint matched is looking good!! Maybe your only disappointment is it’s not a huge upgrade bc like you said you didn’t mind the stock so it’s only kind of better. But still better. Needs a wing now.
@@Smeedia I completely agree lol...I decided to not remove the 3M yet. I need a better product than goo gone. It's entirely too hot outside to continue, so I'll resume tomorrow morning. Looks good on you car ngl.
Initially, I hated the new wrx, mostly for the rear bumper, but they have started to grow on me, especially seeing ones that have been really done up well. Yours has looks fantastic and I love the paint matched flares and I'm looking forward to see what you do to the rear to make it better!!
As someone who drives down lots of dirt roads and my road to my house is gravel. I personally like the cladding. Don't have to worry about paint chips. I think it makes the WRX look the part. It's rally roots.
Renton Mike here!! I think it looks great and you dont need to paint the side skirts... the skirts tie together with the lip and rear... just my opinion. Car looks AWESOME Tanner! 🤘
Very nice, much improved like this. I think the reason why Subaru went with the huge black coutour was to imitate the trend for new models from other compagnies, hoping that it would make the WRX sell better. Surely their marketing people are not really WRX/STI enthusiasts. Now every WRX 2022+ owned has an easy solution + installation demo to "fix" this.
I love the paint matched flare/cladding so much more, but i kinda have to agree with Matt about the smaller piece side piece on the front bumper. The plastic cladding did kinda tie in the overall theme with the car and made it flow, but with that smaller fin on the lower side being painted, it kinda throws off the skirt and the front bumper a little. Persoanlly, i would maybe grab a black spray can, and paint that front side fin to make it flow again instead of paint matchkng the skirts.
Car looks great. Love the front end and WRB. With WRB, paint matched fender flares is a must. You're VB is coming along nice and clean! Keep up the hard work! Look forward to future conent
Looks good but I prefer the black cladding… it grew on me. Mine is white and i prefer the contrast look. That small front bumper piece needs to be black or alternatively paint the side skirts as well.
Tossing in my two cents, I’d argue this is my quintessential look for the VB chassis, it’s similar enough to tie it back to the VA, but different enough with the flat black around the bottom of the car via side skirts and bumpers, to pull it all together! 10/10 dig it
This car now looks perfect!! I used to hate how it looked when it first came out. Now color matched all around and the mods you have done make it look perfect. Its a car i could go and get now.. 😮. How flush the wheels and body look is just so nice.. this would be a perfect channel give away car lolz😅
Looks great but still a fan of OEM cladding. Painting the small piece on the bottom front flair black would 1. Look better than painting side skirts and 2. Be cheaper/easier than painting side skirts. Could prob just wrap it to see what it looks like. If you paint side skirts the natural progression is to go to rear bumper and there’s no good/clean way to do that with WRB (black/white with painted bumper can look good).
Don’t be so biased bro… elaborate on those who dont DARE take their cars off road. The flairs function amazingly from factory. Had a 21 STi and took it off road once. Flairs and side skirts get destroyed, especially with passengers. Love it keep up the great content!
I think for anyone who doesn't like the cladding, buy a black wrx and regularly use a trim restorer or something with uv protection. Probably easier and cheaper than painting the cladding too. Plus, if Subaru is right about the areo benefits, you get to keep them too.
That looks so good! It's almost like all the people that said it looked like garbage when the pics first came out werstipple! Please let us know how many MPG's you lose because your flairs don't have the special stippling!
Some of the Aeroflow dynamic guys are my neighbors. They sometimes have BBQs at my neighbor's house and it straight up looks like a car meet sometimes lol
Wouldn't it be easier to paint the little bumper piece of the new fender black? I actually like the side skirt being black, it makes the side of the car look sleeker. That said, my main issues with the design of the car is the shape of the bumpers (octagonal cuts look weird over a round wheel), and the rear bumper juts out in a weird way. If they fixed those two things, the car look immediately look significantly better.
The oem black flares are not that bad-looking, if you look at it from a rally-car perspective. But the color-matched looks much better for a "street-tuner" style. To each their own, but I kinda like the oem black pieces (except for the rear). Great color-match and fit from Aeroflow.
Looks way better with the matched flares. The only other thing I'd do is color match the textured section of the rear bumper. That's it. Some people go way overboard with color match, you still need some contrast.
The plastic cladding is so when you hit the most sensitive areas with rocks/dirt/etc, you don't need paint repairs. Don't understand why people don't see this - I've had it already happen with my 23 WRX and I'm super stoked that I can just replace the side skirt/bumpers with ease.
Yea I fully believe it looks better stock, when the cladding is still there but it's just painted it is still the same distraction. Only way to do it would be to make a one piece panel that was solid color and then it wouldn't stand out so bad. I am used to the cladding now and like it though, plus would already have 2 paint chips if it was paint matched or full body panels so practical in my eyes.
Your videos have inspired me to go get a ‘23 WRX. I’ll have it in the next few weeks, in ignition red. 😀 3 Questions - What rims are those? Did you get a price quote on color matching the side skirts? And where would you get a new color matched vented hood?
i feel the same i have the exact same car and color and at first i hated it but they have grown on me as well although when the cash is available ill probably get the paint matched as well great video as usual !
Tanner, I agree with Matt's take, but the solution isn't to paint the side skirts. Just paint that lower area of the new front flares black and you'll have a consistent line from front to back.
I think the side skirts look good black after replacing the cladding. But the rear diffuser bothers me. It’s a lot of plastic looking if you understand what I mean. Maybe carbon skirts and carbon rear diffuser might help it, but that’s up to you tbh. The car looks wayyyy better with the paint match cladding.
You should paint the side skirts, but leave a little black on the bottom. For the rear bumper idea there’s a RUclips channel called Street inspired. He’s located on the other side of the US from where you’re at but he also has a VB WRX. I think he may like how he painted his rear bumper.
I like it with or without the color match, color match is definitely better though. My only problem with the VB is the front bumper is just too rounded and it makes the headlights look tiny.
Oh, and as to the sideskirt, what if you only paint 3/4 of it... so there is still about 3/4in black toward the bottom?, then clear coat to make the remaining black glossy?
With as often as you remove the front bumper, you should just design you're own quick release bumper kit. I want to get a set of forged carbon flares myself, but they do look nice.
Everyone gives themselves away as a non-Subaru fan if they were surprised by the fenders. Subaru was showing them on their VIZIV concepts for years. Only difference was they were carbon fiber. But a road car isn't a concept car, and yeah, didn't quite have the cool/quirky effect as the concept. Well...until I dropped the car 18mm and mounted black wheels...and the VIZIV look began coming alive. I'm painting myself...black/clear. It will truly look finished. Rear bumper...it needs the BRZ rear bumper. No brainer. Doing "grafts" used to be reguler/rare thing...it was difficult. Mainly a European thing. Lots of grafting on Porsche's and BMW's in the 1990-2005 period. I figured 3D printing would make this stuff explode. That there would be 10 rear bumpers for the VB by now. Imagination appears to be fading away.
Not really sure why car guys have to argue so much about how someone else’s car looks 😂 If you like cladding then keep it, if you don’t like it then go paint matched. Options are always good, it would be boring if all VB looked the exact same. 🔥👍
I liked it before but I also like it as well now. I see why Matt says the side skirt throws him off now. I would say not paint the side skirts but paint black the small portion of the very front bottom black to match the side skirts.
Tanner, the area that Mattias pointed out on the front that does nor look like it is part of the flare but it is, is the issue. It should be black to match the front lip. It would look much better and blend with the bottom lip and side of the skirting, IMHO.
Just need to paint match the side skirts and the rear bumper body lines that flow from the skirt if that makes sense. I have dm'ed you photos of my Dad's VB with full paint matching for reference :)
Looks way better with paint matched flares. I think with paint matched skirts and redesigned rear bumper along with paint as well and the body will be as good as it gets.
The "cladding" doesn't bother me and in general I don't like how the painted ones look on most VBs. Except yours- it's about the best looking car with the painted trim. I'm not going to paint the ones on my silver '22 but yours looks good 👍.
The cladding has grown on me personally. Kinda looks different.
It grew on me too, but I definitely prefer this 🙌
Yea… like a civic. 😅 in all fairness what tanner has done with it has changed my opinion quite a bit.
It's not different at all. They 100% just did what they've done with the Outback, on the WRX.
@@mm6705 from other sports cars I mean, even different from other WRX's. But yeah I see your point
I've got a WRB VB, and I prefer the black much better than this. The rear bumper is a whole different story, but the black on blue sides is where it's at for me.
I love how everyone talked about how much they hated the stock fenders then when they replaced them they hated those too
Idk, I think I actually preferred the black which is crazy but it gave it texture and depth
I like both, the cladding definitely grew in me when I thought it wouldent 😅
I think the paint match looks pretty good, but I was diggin the black everything on the bottom of the car (including wheels). It had a presence.
I grew to like it, tbh both options I'm cool with. 😅
It’s the weirdest thing, when I 1st bought the car I hated the cladding but now I like it and am not fond of the paint match. I can’t explain it
Seeing it in person it looks so much better than the factory flares.
