Full review of the Fujifilm X100VI: • Fujifilm X100VI vs X10...
Tony Northrup follows-up on his review of the Fujifilm X100VI compact mirrorless camera to go into greater detail about some of the camera's deep flaws. While the Fuji X100VI is the world's most popular compact, fixed-lens mirrorless camera, and it's gone through six generations of refinements, Fuji has overlooked some very serious problems while putting their energy into features that don't provide a feasible improvement (like the megapixels of the sensor).
These problems detract from a camera that's supposed to be fun. Reading a 420 page manual ( sdp.io/x6manual ) IS NOT FUN. Waiting 22 seconds for EACH JPG photo to transfer to your phone IS NOT FUN. Remembering, or forgetting, to dig into the menus to manually switch between dog and human eye AF IS NOT FUN. Needing to reset the focus point every time you pick up the camera isn't fun.
Look, we're willing to make some sacrifices to get great images. But in our side-by-side tests, the X100VI doesn't produce significantly better images in most scenarios compared to the previous generation X100V or even a modern iPhone 15 Pro Max.
This video isn't just to complain or put down the Fuji X100VI, because I love it. Instead, it's meant to provide some direction and inspiration for the next-generation X100VII so that it becomes a camera that's more accessible to a wider, younger, less technical audience. I do believe the X100-series cameras are the best first camera for younger people who learned photography on a smartphone, but if they're going to take their photography to the next level, they need a camera that's easier and more fun to use.

Tony, Chris at Pal2Tech had a great tip. In the settings you can change the transfer speed from 2.4GHz to 5GHz. I tried it and it speeds up the transfer considerably. I agree with you that the apps still sucks, menus are suboptimal, wish there was theft protection and computational enhancements.
Never seen Tony reacting this way before 😂
Can understand why. Guess it’s more like expressing disappointment.. after so much hyped and very looooooong waiting time this is what You’ve got with a premium price …..
Lol!😅
As Shakespeare once wrote, “full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.”
@@stevepatrick5818 😂
A wakeup call!
It’s not aimed at the tik tok crowd lol! It’s literally a revision of the last camera that they built which also WASNT aimed at the tik tok generation. Kids just fell in love with it because fixed lens film cameras are cool now (contax etc) and Fuji happened to have the only camera on the market with an OVF that feels like an old film camera. It’s that simple.
The lens was updated on the last gen so it’s not what they’ve had for lots of other generations. It’s sharp at close distance and at f2. It may not resolve 40mp but that’s not as big a jump from 26 as you think anyway.
Finally, they couldn’t build the V anymore so they retooled and redesigned the camera, built it in China etc. so they could basically sell the things again. Why would they radically change the most popular camera on earth that’s back ordered for years? That would be insane.
So it’s literally just a small revision of the same product. If they changed it more no one would buy it and they’d be still looking for the “OG” V version.
1600 camera should not be anyone’s first camera.. plus, it’s a real camera with proper controls so you have to LEARN how to use one. So manuals are a must. That’s part of the joy of a dedicated camera, multiple
Options and configurations so you have full control of the image. Not like a phone where the oversharpen the crap out of everything and AI it to death.
Rant over … :-)
Yes, but the huge overpricing of the X100V, at almost double its real new value, when bought used, was caused by TikTok.
The TikTok crowd only uses phones, and not even very expensive phones, anyway. Or if uses camera, they would go the Instax way.
And as you said, the "cool" factor, the "hype", the "fashionable" attribute are all that matter. Not the usefulness or practicality.
And also, this is NOT at all someone's first camera after their phone! No way! The Sony ZV-1, ZV-E10, a7C, Canon R50, R10, R8, with some kit-ish lenses can be that; and everything else similar to that - which are all practical in many ways, good for video too, with a zoom lens, and offers significant advantages (with proper lenses) to a phone, esp. to a mid-range phone - such as reach, or low light in longer focal lengths. This is a pro's or a fashionable photographer's (with enough budget) camera for travel and street.
Can’t believe how brain dead some people are.. you’re SO right this wasn’t made for the tik tol crowd.. tik tol crowd thinks the x100v was the only camera with film simulations.. that’s why they cared.. Fuji didn’t even have to market to them.
@@catalin-apindeed. I use lots of heavy Canon pro SLR kit for work and studio/labs etc and the excellent but tiny M series for my travel so far.
However when we put a small M kit on the scales (M5 plus two zooms and a prime) it weighed 3 times as much as the Fuji.
I’m going on a trip to China where there is a 5kg weight limit on carry on bags so it may end up as an M5 with the 55-200 and the Fuji for cities and key sites. A little Manfrotto hand sized tripod and a decent mic will also go along. I’ve ordered 2 of the necessary 3mm to 2.5mm mic adapters….
Hey Tony, please don't be too upset. Next time, I will ask Fujifilm to send you a review unit sooner and also let you keep it.
Have to say, GPS is the FIRST thing I turn off on a camera. Not having it is honestly a selling point for me... one less thing I have to hunt up in the menu to disable. Also, have to disagree that this camera is aimed at the TikTok crowd... it's definitely not, for all the reasons you mentioned. It's aimed at photographers who want to have a decent small camera with them without the need to carry a larger camera and all of its kit.
Why do you turn off GPS?
@@TroupeGoal A few reasons, but number one is it is a huge drain on your battery life. Like a cell phone that is constantly trying to connect, it is constantly trying to update location. When it doesn't have a good connection, it will suck the life right out of your battery. I haven't had a camera with active GPS that didn't.
I agree that I'd love to see them improve the lens. Everything else you said is completely off base. I don't want my camera to function like an iPhone. I want a camera that has not just retro styling but also retro functioning, and yet with modern quality--so that I put thought into the pictures I create with it.
Some really valid points. I think I would be happier if they stuck to the 26MP sensor and added IBIS. I have an X-T5 with the 40MP sensor and it just makes everything slower for no perceptible increase in image quality.
You can pick XS-20 with 26mp sensor and IBIS
x100vi does have IBIS?
@@j2thebee Definitely
40MP is the equivalent of ~90MP on a full frame. 26 MP is plenty on a point and shoot.
This is Fujifilm marketing gone mad.
@@DA-yd2nybeing able to a crop is a thing and it was a fantastic option to have with the 40😊
Most important thing in a fixed lens camera? The lens... Ricoh GR and Leica Q series blow the fuji lens on the x100 series out of the water. Goes past me why Fuji haven't given the lens more love
Nobody cares in the audience the X100 goes after. It’s good enough to share on 4k or less sized screens. The Ricoh doesn’t have the looks or the JPEG’s of the Fuji.
Indeed! The lens is very soft and lacks sharpness. It's doesn't accommodate the high res at all!
@@kalimarus I don't agree on the jpegs having shot with Fuji cameras for a long time and the x100 and x100v I can state that the GRIII(X) film sins are different but do a wonderful job. I'd argue that the monochrome on the GR is awesome and the film recipes match those of Fuji. That said the lens on the GR is sharper
@@PaulTakesPhotos I’m sure the GR has great JPEG’s, but it’s hard to argue that Fuji JPEG’s aren’t popular for a reason. The GR is sorta what the X100 was when it first came out. A really niche camera for enthusiasts, but it doesn’t have the iconic Fuji looks. No 15-25 year olds are bragging to their friends about a GR. I have no hate for that Camera, I’ve got a bunch of Pentax/Ricoh gear myself and have looked at getting one a few times. But the lens difference won’t matter for the reasons the X100 line went to the moon for sales.
Sony RX1R as well.
@TonyandChelsea, so what gets your recommendation for a similar style camera? I get the comparisons many are making to the Q3, but there’s also a massive disparity in the price. Would you recommend just going with an older x100 version? I’m someone with multiple bodies between a few older Canon ones and a few Sony, old and new. I’ve got the x100T recently and have had multiple preorders for the six from the start but still none have come in so I’m starting to sour anyway.
Im using discontinued canon m6 mii with 22mm f2 pan cake lens as my secondary camera. Excellent small combo
Ricoh GRIII/IIIX?
Do remember what Tony says in the end, he and Chelsea still love the X100VI.
@@amberhawke, and a spouse says they love their partner after hitting them. What’s your point?
Ricoh UI is brilliantly efficient, at least on the II (haven’t tried the III). All one handed, and the number of options is actually manageable.
Turn to the last pages of the manual; THERE IS NO INDEX! Just a table of contents in the front.
I have a x100v and have chosen not to attempt to buy the VI. You just validated my decision even more. Thanks Tony
Funny, I just saw a reddit post where some guy announced he had the new 100vi. So he turns the camera over and in red pen he had drawn an “i” after the “v”, lol
Thank you! Did you try 5GHz WiFi for transferring photos? Or reduce the size? But I agree on all points, especially when it comes to image quality…
It's funny you get to focus the X100VI the same way I do with the X100 - center AF, then recompose. I agree with most of your points, especially with the menu system. Unfortunately it's a widespread problem. Just open System Settings on your Mac and savor the horror.
did you really complained about the SD Card not included? I can agree about some stuff you said but some are really far fetch.
Why should a $1600 camera not take pictures out-of-the-box?
@@TonyAndChelsea because you would be stuck with only this amount of storage. Also the price of the camera would be higher. The SD card is replacable and cheap. I really think you are trying to make a problem where there is none here. Also you keep saying it’s a beginner/first camera but it is not. Name one camera under 2000$ that comes with internal memory.
My nieces and nephews who are in their teens look at the memory card like it’s the dumbest shit they’ve ever seen in their life. And when I see it through their eyes, I can see their point: It’s kind of like using a cassette tape in 2024. Their phones don’t need it Why should a $1600 dollar thing that doesn’t make phone calls be harder to use?
My question is why is this a Fujifilm hate when all manufacturers normally don’t provide internal sd
@@cybernetix86 "Name one camera under 2000$ that comes with internal memory." Your phone.
"because you would be stuck with only this amount of storage." They can include both an SD card and internal storage. Also gives you redundancy.
"Also the price of the camera would be higher" Seriously? First of all, the camera already has internal storage. That's where the firmware lives. It just needs to be bigger, and available for photos. Storage is extremely cheap. Increasing the storage by 64GB useable for photos doesn't cost more than $5 in bulk per camera. (proof: you can buy 64GB MicroSD cards for about $5) Would you pay $5 more for your camera if it had 64GB internal storage? I would.
Matt Granger in his review picked up the fact that the lens is not good enough for the sensor now. They should have stuck with the totally adequate 26 megapix sensor.
The funny part is there someone at Fuji who still thinks they nailed it with a 400+ manual.
@TonyAndChelsea Although you like to Poo Poo anything that is not your favorite pick of the month (Stated as someone who watching everyone of your videos), Do you have a recommendation for a small compact pocketable camera that is cheaper than a Leica (event though I named my new dobie puppy Leica)? I have been using the Sony RX100 series and currently have the RX100VI but it looks like Sony isn't coming out with a Sony RXVIII any time soon as the VII is old now. I love the RX100VI but eventually is will need to be replaced as it gets a lot of abuse. My husband has a GRII but I'm not a fan of the 23 mm focal length. This periodic quest to scope out a possible replacement brought me here. I would love to have the next RX100 but I've been waiting years (unless you have some secret insider info that a new one is finally coming). I have a collection of Canon DSLRS and lenses but lately it is only the big lens for wildlife & birds and the macro lens that gets used. For everything else I use the Sony RX100VI because I am no longer willing to travel with a bunch of bulky heavy camera gear.
Would love to see you guys do a comparison on menu systems of the big manufacturers and give them a rating? Who has the least worst, and how they compare to the likes of Lecia or Hasselblad...
I’m going to have to disagree on the big point. A camera absolutely should not be a computer or phone. I want a tool, not another Big Tech device that I have to constantly update. I don’t want to have to worry about a camera being hacked over the network. I don’t want to have encryption security on it that is guaranteed to break at some point while I’m out trying to have fun photographing something. I would have to stop, then having to go home, figure out where the recovery key is located, and then type it in on a small screen. I don’t want to have to manage and update applications on it. I want to largely set it up once and then just pick it up and take pictures. I only make minor changes to settings.
The menu could definitely be updated to be more friendly.
Your phone and computer are encrypted (for about the last decade) and they've never had a problem...
@@TonyAndChelsea not correct for me. I’ve had several issues with BitLocker. I can think of at least 6 times I’ve had to go through BitLocker recovery and the most recent one failed to work with the recovery key. Apple seems to have a better, more reliable design. However, most software companies would not get this right. Would the team that make the Fuji phone app get this right?
Disclosure: I’m a software engineer at Microsoft in Windows
When was the last (or first) time your phone's encryption "broke" and you had to type "something"? Pretty sure the answer is NEVER.
I think the best middle ground is just a good Bluetooth connection between camera and phone. Leica with their FOTOS app provides all that info that Tony was complaining about and the camera is still barebones. Heck, some leicas don’t even have a screen at all.
Get with the times
The Q button is for Quick menu. It’s where one can tailor-make to show the settings one usually wants to quickly adjust.
I have used Fuji cameras almost exclusively since the XE-1 so I find their lay out intuitive these days. I suspect it is what you are used to. Q = Quick menu.
I recently purchased a GFX camera and the interface was like coming home - it was so familiar.
Great video! You could have mentioned the terrible battery life as well. You need to carry around at least one or two spare batteries for a full day of shooting😐
One of the few videos you've made that I have to disagree with. You made a big deal about things that have not made you crazy in other cameras, such as the AFL/AEL button. If you hate the Q button, do you also hate similar in other cameras, such as the Super Control Panel in Olympus? And why compare it so much to the iPhone? They are different processes, both of which can achieve great results. But the experiences are so different that maybe Fuji should be compared to other cameras, and iPhones compared to other phones. And re "aimed at TikTok," that disses the buyers who bought the original X100, X100S, X100T, X100F, etc. We did not have TikTok accounts, yet the camera was a success. So, TikTok put the x100 series cameras in overdrive, but it was a popular camera even before.
A voice of reason that is much appreciated!
I couldn’t agree more. The issues he highlights are present on almost every other mirrorless camera. His benchmark for photography standards appears to be the iPhone. Really??
@@careywalker1504 yes he’s comparing this Fujifilm with the device many purchasers could be coming from
It should have computational photography that rivals the iPhone. No excuse.
That's because the targeted group of users for this camera tend to be folks who are more accustomed to smartphone photography
have the 5 ,always problems with transferring ordered the6 but buy proably sony 7c 2 what do you think/
I'm a Sony guy, I bought the X100VI and I have no idea what to expect, I don't even like apsc cameras, but the simplicity is what sold me on it. The mindset. For me it's a photo only camera, and that's the mindset I want to be in when using it, a fixed 35mm lens, stock emulation, I don't want to think about the tech, I just want to think about the photo.
There's nothing which holds you back from "don't want to think about the tech, I just want to think about the photo" with your Sony camera. Or any other brand's camera. Configure it once to taste, and then forget about further camera configuration. Simple, eh? 🙂
Sure, but then you could've just used your sony. It's not like sony doesn't have literally every funcionality that this has
Mate, Get a used XT1 or XT3. Or a Q3 if you can afford it.
@@tubularificationed Yep, I agree with every single one of you. I can do all of this on my Sony, AND in full frame, just how I like it. I guess I just want to see what the fuss is about. I take all my photos on the A7S3 or ZV-E1, so I'm rolling on a tiny mp count, but that's all you really need. We'll see, but I'm currently very sceptical.
@@PhillipSkraba Completely agree mate, I have my Sony which can do it all, even a Panasonic GM5 with pancake, but my pre-order has arrived and I'm fighting the urge to put down 1600 just to see what all the fuss with this and the V is/was all about
Great Video. Last year I got a used x100S with very low shutter count and I love it. Yes, it’s slow and very offline, but that’s what I like about it. You have to take your time to get your shot. And the pictures always have a very distinctive look and great colors. I’m glad I didn’t fall for the hype around the VI.
This is why i still have the S model. Works fine, wouldn’t mind the weather sealing but that’s about it vs the new one. I could care less about 40mp when the largest screen anyone will look at an image on is 8mp and will be for a long time. Looks like the menu’s are still a tragedy on the new one too. Good thing the dials make it simple to use. To be fair about wireless, it’s slow on every single camera I’ve used to the point that I still just use a iphone SD reader and send to phone that way. Security features should be a thing on these phones but I suspect people would get really tired really fast of logging into there camera every single time it goes to standby or turned off. I mean I guess they could face scan you like the iphone but that would probably be expensive since they can barely handle developing menu systems. I suspect the Fuji X100 line is popular for a few basic reasons in the first place. 1. It looks cool, 2. The JPEGS look good with no editing. 3. Dials that you kinda can ignore the 400+ page manual to use.
IBIS is huge
I clicked on this to tell you that you are wrong about my beloved X100 series. Ha ha. Joke's on me. It is a quirky camera. I use all my curse words. You didn't tell the one that makes me crazy. You change one thing on the menu and half a dozen others go gray. If it's been a few days and I don't remember what teeny tiny thing I changed, I'm yelling WTF now?! But it is a beautiful camera!!!!
Yeah you're right that mutually exclusive settings is yet another PITA, especially since they don't give you any hint about the conflict.
I considered ordering one, because, a million people can't be wrong, right? On investigation, other than weather sealing, there was not much else that impressed me. I recently saw a second hand Olympus PEN F with only 5500 shutter actuations, and it looks a million time's better than the Fuji. I bought it and I am in love with it. 📷 Happy snapping folks. 😊
I am hoping for OM systems to release an updated PEN F. I have a SONY A6700 but Olympus cameras like my EM5 M2 are so much nicer to use if the lighting is sufficient. I rarely use my phone to take pictures - hate the ergonomics compared to dedicated cameras.
The pen F is a great camera. It just needs an APSC sensor 26 mp back side illuminated procapture , shoot 20 fps.
@@mawavoy Keeping any updated PEN F micro four thirds is preferable for me, otherwise my current Olympus/OM lenses would not be suitable. When I feel I need APSC (lower light) , I use my Sony cameras . Most of the time for outside hiking/street/travel photography , micro four thirds image quality with a decent lens is just fine for me unless I want to do severe crops . Except in low light conditions, in practical terms, even on a large PC monitor the image quality difference between an APS-C picture and a Micro four thirds picture is barely distinguishable, if at all unless you "pixel peep". Sony makes great APS-C cameras (i have the NEX-5, A6000, A6300 and A6700) but I enjoy my Olympus cameras more in terms of "fun factor" and style. It's great to have variety !
Some fair criticisms here but also a couple of things that are a bit harsh. Also, double tapping the joystick re-centers the focus point and change the default wifi setting from 2.5ghz to 5 ghz speeds up the file transfers
Still hangin for your zf review. One of the most reliable trusted sources of independent information.
The disadvantage of adding all that connectitivty features to your camera is that you'll constantly need updates. Certificates expire, protocols change, wifi standards change and so on. So if the camera manufacturer stops updating the camera (maybe after 2-3-4 years) it might become useless after that time. So if you ask me, I can live really well with cameras without all that connectitivity features. The alternative would be to do it right and support a camera with updates for 10 or 20 years. But I don't see that happening.
Very informative - you highlighted some things others fail to mention. Thank you! As a side note, another video mentioned the fact that you couldn't get the battery compartment door open when you have a tripod mount on the bottom, and the microphone input was on the same side you would hold the camera, so when using an external microphone it makes the camera very difficult to hold properly. For a great camera, it seems to have a lot of issues that shouldn't have to exist.
Thanks for someone addressing these flaws honestly, I decided to go for an R8 for this reason. And dont regret it.
Honest review and the reason I sold my Fuji camera was primarily the interface and then the file handling.
Very informative. Thanks!
Thumbs up for the unsponsored creative content! I hope that people will get that you're acting here. But you raised very valid points for sure, especially about the menu system.

I'm really looking forward to your video on the best setup options for the Fuji X100VI. Thank you.
I’m a Fuji shooter and agree with you on the UI being outdated. It’s often cumbersome and unintuitive and has remained unchanged for years now. You can get used to working with it but that doesn’t change the fact that theres lots of room fit improvement there.
rant videos are always my favorite.
Lol!😅
Thanks for posting. So how do you really feel? Time for a Q3? lol. I know, I know, you can buy four of the vi for one q3 and the vi has the added advantage of being used for target practice (shotgun not included). lol
I am so glad I watched this. Very informative from a credible source. Thank you.
Everything you said is basically an attribute of Fuji's current line up. Same 40mp sensors. Same menu system. Same apps and software ecosystem. A lens line up that is older than it is newer. Same lack of features -- that as you point out, many bodies don't have. So 4 complaints you should universally apply to all APS-C Fuji and a wishlist.
Tell them Tony!!! Also it should have a 0.5 aperture to obliterate that background and connectivity to Starlink 🤣🤣🤣
I think the Fuji App works amazingly well on my android phone (pixel). I've not experienced any issues with it.
Wish Fuji would say if an X-Pro4 is coming in 2025 or if that line of Fuji cameras is discontinued.
In the X-S20 in Auto mode the subject is automatically selected. They need to bring that option on all the modes and cameras
I was kinda taken back when you showed the menu. I still have and use the original x100 from 2011 and the menu still looks EXACTLY the same 😂
The menu systems in all the cameras is really shocking and starting to get annoying. Is Hasselblad the only company with a menu system that feels like it’s from the 21st century?
As a Sony user of 5 years, the Fuji interface is fine lol
The lack of computational photography that rivals the iPhone’s is a deal breaker.
How about going out and buying a Fujifilm disposable camera?
I’m sticking with my X100F. I think that was its peak in some ways. It still had the D pad then and the menus were simple. Over the years they have added more and more which has over complicated it. It’s meant to be a retro style camera, but it’s far from retro if it is not simple to use. Considering old film cameras only had 3 basic settings, aperture, shutter speed and ISO, there really is no need for menus this big.
Thank you
If the X100VI lens isn't up to snuff, how about the alternative of something like an X-T50 with a smaller lens, like XF 23mm F2 R WR? Are the interchangeable lenses better than the lens on the X100VI? Or are all Fuji 40 MP cameras limited by their lenses?
Tony - go into the communications sub-menu and switch wifi from 2.4 to 5GHz. Camera and app work like you hope they would. I know, that should be the default. Also, your basic premise about tick-tockers moving up to this camera having difficulty with auto-focus and the menu; if you put the camera in full Auto, which is what a tick-tocker should do when moving to any new camera, many of your complaints go away. For example, the camera will fully auto select; the focus subject detection and area mode, scene selection, film simulation, and scene or subject exposure. That doesn't cover all of your issues, but it does address many. Oh, and BTW, the power switch is under the shutter release for a reason. When carrying any of my Fuji cameras I simply switch the camera off. Settings can't get screwed up. When switched on the camera is instantly ready, and it's so fast and convenient I don't even know I'm doing it.
The camera came with a menu Tony. Besides, a 75 years old man is not the targeted market, so go buy a canon ok.....Nikon in your case
Their menus suck, too... Just not quite as bad.
@TonyAndChelsea it has never been a perfect camera, but it's better than a smartphone, so don't approach it with your decades of professional experience because it will only disappoint you
How is the SD card not being included with the camera a valid point?
Because he is seeking bashing points and has found no others 🤷♂️😉.
Why would it not be? Especially for someone's first camera. Figuring out you need an accessory to take a picture and finding the right speed and capacity is pretty complicated for someone new to photography. But anyway, I'm primarily asking for internal storage.
No other camera comes with an sd card. Why are you digging thing one out? Weird…
I’ve seen that to improve transfer speeds to the phone you have to use the 5Ghz wifi. I’ve seen it move way faster. I don’t have mine yet, but when I get it I will for sure test that.
6:14 Tony, you need to change the WiFi speed on the camera and it will speed up the transfers significantly. By default it’s at 2.4Ghz and you can switch it to 5Ghz, night and day. Menu item is in the lightning bolt, then Smartphone connection, then wifi frequency
That's a good tip but why the hell is it 2.4GHz by default?? And why can't it automatically select the fastest supported frequency like every other device? This actually makes me even more mad lol.
@@TonyAndChelsea So it will work with greater compatibility.
@@TonyAndChelsea 2.4 GHz is universally compatible as not everyone has 5Ghz wifi.
At first I thought it was going to be another video of a pro photographer asking the camera to be a boring one (flipping screen, boring 28mm eq. fov, two SD cards, pasm dial) but actually this is a very mature assessment. Specially the protection for the loss of these cameras, not only for people that robs it, but also for people that can find them and return them to their owners. Sometimes there are places we revisit with a different light and as so GPS location helps to organize it.
Love this video, it captures it how it is. And it's fun.
Interesting - can you also do a rant about Nikon Z8,Z9, Z7, Z6. Thanks
Nikon shooters are too fragile.
Yes I remember the video where you summarized: the weaker a brand's strategical position is (often evident also from market share development), the more fragile and sensitive their users react to painful truths about their brand. NIKON seems to become the new PENTAX in that regard? 🙂
Nikon's current problem: not competitive in the most important market segments, i.e. no serious camera offering apart from just the Z8/9. Nikon thinks, all they need to have is a prestige model or two, and then everything else wouldn't matter any more. This strategical mistake might be their final one, which might finally break their neck (in terms of their lost market share, and thus, lost market relevance).
Nikon seems to succeed Pentax by 10 years, and the Pentax case showed us: once the market share goes downhill and gets below a critical level, this becomes unrecoverable and unstoppable. And the market is more unforgiving today, than it had been 10 years ago.
I have a Sony a7CR & a7Riii and bought the X100VI as a fun camera and love it.....but Tony you've nailed the frustration! But I was in high school & college in the 80s and 90s so it kinda feels like listenting to the 80s on 8.
Tony, excellent critique. Turn the camera off while it dangles from you neck and the joy stick will not flick the focus box into a corner.
Concur that the Q menu is pretty useless.
On my x100v I have the blank top plate button programmed for shutter delay.
The lens on the v an the vi is an improvement over that on the older models. To make it fully resolve 40 mp would also make it larger (like the magnificent Sony/Zeiss E-1.8/24). What I love about this pancake lens is it excellent behavior in avoiding flare and chromatic aberrations, vs. many pancake designs. Resolution is still good enough for close ups of wildflowers, though not up to what I get with FF Sony and Zeiss glass (and for this we have Topaz Photo AI sharpening).
Ah well, that's why most companies moved on from designs like that some decades ago, but you can look like a cool hipster carrying it around and that's what really counts.
Can you not connect using a Lighting to USB-C adapter on older iPhones?
I've just spent a month travelling in Asia with a Ricoh GRiiix. Takes phenomenal photos in a tiny package that no one even noticed most of the time. On the only 2 occasions when someone did notice it, they thought it was a $200 used bit of old tat. When I told them that I paid 1,200€ for it they looked stunned. Yes it's a bit of a pain to use at times, and low light auto focusing is a bit hit and miss, but I am happy to make the trade off for being able to walk in very suspect parts of the world without hanging an advert around my neck saying "LOOK AT ME AND MY EXPENSIVE GEAR"
Absolutely. GR is a gem.
I have a Leica m11 monochrome and a GR III. The GR III is probably the best camera on the planet for the capabilities it has in its form factor. No other camera can actually fit in your pocket and do what the GR can do at the level it does.
Did anyone notice the extremely slow and inaccurate AF in the filming mode? When in AF-S, the pre-shot focusing takes ages and is influenced by AF-C settings. I often missed the occasion to shoot a short clip because I struggled for 30 seconds to obtain focus (in AF-S!)
I can’t believe that the camera launched with such a rubbish UI and that is even more inexcusable for what Fuji charges for the camera. I just love the Canon UI - it’s consistent and reliable without burying items in sub menus of sub menus. This camera was on my grail list, but not anymore. I would end up getting so frustrated like Tony that it wouldn’t be used much.
It's pretty clear that you’re not a fuji user. The UI isnt bad at all.
💯, once you get used to it is just so easy to use.
As a long time, Fuji owner, the first thing I would do is watch a couple of videos on how to use the camera.
Next, I would learn how to use my menu, this speeds up everything much quicker. You can pick and choose what’s important for you to change on the fly.
Next, I would learn how to use auto ISO, which speeds everything up.
And lastly, I have gripes about cameras and phones, Apple used to be fairly easy to use, but it’s got more complex as the years go by. When Steve Jobs was alive, he used to say what can we take out of the phone, perhaps camera makers should do the same!
I don’t need a more and more complex computer, I just need it to auto focus quickly and accurately, have instant access to certain settings and stop removing the D pad!
I have the X100v and I'm not upgrading to the VI. No reason to - (most) everything the VI can do, my V can do just as well and with a smaller file size. Thank you for validating my choice.
Great points. I agree with how unintuitive the camera menus are...and this is not exclusive for the x100vi.
I also agree that transferring files between cameras and a smartphone wirelessly should be faster and more intuitive, but other cameras also deal with this in one form or the other.
On the transfer speed, I haven't received my x100vi and can't test this, I heard somewhere that if you're transferring pics to the fuji app over wifi, you can pick the 5ghz band on the x100vi to make it faster than the default 2.4ghz band.
I have the V and an iPhone, and definitely the photos are not at the same level.
Nitpicking features that don’t exist in any camera, common.
While I’ve been waiting for the highly hyped Fuji 100vi, I was able to get Leica Q3 and used it on my vacation before coming home and receiving the Fuji camera. I really wanted to love the Fuji 100vi but Leica Q3 completely blew me away, for the photo quality and how much more intuitive its menu is. Now im on the fence wether to keep or get rid of the Fuji camera because having them both is becoming more complicated and confusing.
It is simple. You use the Q3 to produce quality photography you care about. You use the other camera when you get tired of crisply focused, high quality, images and just want some good, old fashioned, soft consumer crap.
I know exactly how you feel. About time somebody let it all out and showed us what's behind the hysteria curtain.
On the first item on Q menu you can change between your user presets C1 to C7 (if you saved some).
So glad I hung on to my positively ancient Eye-Fi card. The app autoconnects and transfers everything I shoot to my phone while the phone's in my pocket.
Good rant!
Very good points!
Unfortunate that they've been using the same outdated lens. Same thing they do with their instax cameras. Fuji just riding the wave of hype and consumerism.
The menu is another concern that looks horrible. Even Canon's menus I wish were better yet I'd say they have one of the best ui's.
Absurd that any camera in this price point lacks GPS.
As for the theft issues. This is the only major channel I see bringing up this concern and should be an issue consistently brought up to force manufacturers to implement changes.
Basically a phone with a 'filmic' app could be on-par with the x100vi. With great ui, GPS, and anti-theft measures.
One can criticize the lens, but it's not outdated. Tony is incorrect. The lens was introduced in X100V, the very previous model, as upgrade to the original lens that ran for several generations. It's a lens introduced in 2020, so still rather new in this industry.
@@Sande1s But not new enough to handle the resolution of a 40 MB sensor!
I can't comment on the 100VI IMG quality as I have not used it. However, I thought they upgraded the lens for the previous model. It is not the same lenses across the whole x100 range. .
The quality is brilliant with the new sensor, too. I had the F, the V and now the VI.
I’m curious to know which camera in this form factor does address these issues
Thank you for the honest review!
Nikon Z8 user.. bought the x100vi as carrying a giant camera and a 24-70 wasn’t always the most fun.. now I have this Fuji in my pocket at all times.. just did a whole trip to Dubai and took this as my only stills camera and it was ridiculously convenient and the photos turned out great.
Fuji’s menu system is infamous! Just really antiquated and messy. I remember reading reviews of the original X100 (way back when) and they were complaining about the awful menu system back then too!
I’ll stick to my RP with a 24mm pancake lens
Agreed! The most annoying issue with X100VI (also X100V) is that the first item in quick menu (Q button) cannot be changed. Who thought that this was a "feature" that user wanted???
Nobody wants to hear it but I’ve watched two reviews on x100vi that suggested that the lens does not resolve the 40mp sensor and one went on to say that the results are soft. These were RUclips channels with under 50,000 subscribers. I was waiting for a big RUclips channel to say something about it and finally Tony you do. Thank you. Fuji should have redesigned the lens or kept the megapixels to 26. Of course it would not matter to 100,000 people who are buying it as an accessory, but glad the truth is coming out, albeit slowly
Well it isn’t aimed at the tiktok crowd. The tiktok crowd just targeted this camera. I agree or partially agree with most of your points except for the SD card. Flash memory will wear out over time and i am glad that SD card is removable and i hope it will always stay like that.
Eh, internal memory can last a really long time especially with good software management. Have you ever had a smartphone with a memory failure?
@@TonyAndChelsea I have Surveillance cameras that grind through memory cards every couple of months. I know it is constant stress but I would rather have removable memory for peace of mind. Also I can easily upgrade my SD or take it out if I want to. Would you rather have internal memory in a professional camera?
So then really no reason that consumers aren't offered both options. Having Flash memory alongside a removable card. So no, it really shouldn't always stay the same.
They can easily add 64 GB of internal flash storage with a card slot.
Yep the tiktok comment made me laugh. This camera was conceived long before tiktok came along. If they were trying to cater to the tiktokers (or whatever they call themselves) Fuji would have a fully reversible back screen. So I guess Tony missed that criticism. But most of what was said in this video is valid. GPS was on my wishlist.
Like I already responded to the short about the Nikon zf, It's clear the zf caters to its part of the retro crowd better than the x100vi caters to its TikTok crowd.
I agree this camera could have been much more progressive in that regards. I also don't think the image quality actually surpasses my om-5 in any way, which it should. That's disappointing. Focussing is easier and more reliable on the om-5 as well. And it's weather sealed better.
All in all, I like the x100vi but I don't love it like the zf or the om-5.l before that.
And btw you're wrong about the lens not resolving the resolution. It doesn't at f/2 but stop down and it does just fine.
I got the new Lomomatic 110 camera this week, simple. remember 110 film?
I personally don't care about the hype about X100 IV, what I care about is, every time I pick up my x100s, it's instantly magic ❤
I think I'll keep saving for a Sony A7Cr. 61MP, and you can put any E-mount lens you like, on it.
Can anyone tell me when the X100 series became so popular? I sold my X100F 4 years ago at a very low price. I regret it. It was not that popular at all at that time. In fact, the design has always been nothing changes.
TicTok. Vintage is in style see M6
TicTok blew them up. Prior to that it was mostly people who enjoyed the analog dials and a rangefinder experience. They were never a fast camera to use but the JPEG’s do look great with no editing. I suspect it’s the looks and the JPEG low effort that was the magic combo.
Covid pandemic.
Those are fair points! Tried getting my teen into photography with the X100V (which I loved) - no interest, for many of the reasons cited 😢
What do you think about panasonic s5 ii firmware update?
I'm excited to test it out when it's released!
I agree with all of your points. All reasons why I would love to have one at some point, but not until the 100v is going for $500’ish on the used market. Then I’ll grab one.
the best thing of this camera is you can't put a plate mount on it and need to remove every time you swap a battery. for usd2000 for point to shoot camera is quite expensive
Very much appreciate the different view on the camera, this was interesting to watch. Regarding the app. I have just returned from 3-day long trip, where for the sake of experiment I wanted all my photos taken on XT3 to have location. This indeed was a little mess, but overall managenble. Turn Bluetooth off on camera, turn it on, open the app on smartphone, try to pair. I wish it worked smoother (might take a couple of attempts), but overall I personally like the concept of loading GPS and timezone data from smartphone
Finally! A great critical analysis of this lazy upgrade
