I will have to play with a more consistent ball position this fall and next season. Greetings from the San Fernando Valley in California! Five excellent tips Todd on how seniors can unleash their driver swing. As a VLS advocate, I am adhering to all of them, but will be making slight adjustments. You asked for stories on Palmer after using his finish as one of the tips, so I will give you mine. Anytime Arnie came into Los Angeles for pro tournaments whether it was Rancho Park or Riviera Country Club, I went out to see him. On one of the tournaments, I had him autograph the book he wrote "My Game and Yours" that I owned. On another occasion, when he was was at Rancho Park I saw him and asked for his autograph on the program and have my picture taken with him. A 8 1/2" by 11" framed photo of the two of us now sits on my desk in my office. There will never be another golfer with his charisma!!
The book was copyrighted in 1963 and contains 158 pages and sixteen chapters. The chapters cover things like: Golf is easier than you think, How to be the one golfer in fifty who holds the club right, how to buy a set of clubs and the right ball for you, how to talk yourself into better putting, the secret of accurate driving. Besides written dialogue, the book contains numerous pictures on basics and Arnie in different forms of the swing. My dust cover is rather tattered now and the pages are becoming discolored and rigid, so it's not taken out too much anymore. It was a book that was referred back to numerous times by me!
Experienced golfer from Florida. Played with my new Max Vert driver yesterday for the first time. Initially couldn't get the club face squared at impact. After several holes I found if I raised my hands just slightly it not only helped square the face but also gave me a few extra yards. Too soon to tell whether or not the Max Vert is going to replace my old driver, but it does look promising! Any tips on hitting the Max Vert?
I set-up like you do but with a slight difference. I start with my feet together, but I position the ball opposite the toe of my trail foot. Then I move my trail foot back but don't move my lead foot. This ensures the ball position is always the same, as it removes the possible variation of how far I happen to move my lead foot.
I like that you have a specific process in place, that is KEY! Here is some more details on the driver set up if you are interested ruclips.net/video/HuGq4q9_pSs/видео.htmlsi=l0CfhsPgDb1Pj2p8
Bonner Springs KS - Arnold Palmer- In the mid 90's for a number of years I volunteered at the Los Angeles Ralphs Senior Classic as a marshall on the first hole tee box. He was very much business but always kind and pleasant.
Great expanation of how to hit driver for seniors. Question: I'm using a 10.5 degree adjustable driver that can addup to + 2 degrees loft or take up to 2 degrees off the 10.5 normal loft. I used to play a driver that was listed as HL, and I found that I had to play the ball more off the center of my stance with the tee a bit lower to avoid the rocket to the moon skyball. If I'm setting the ball forward in my setup, should I be adjusting the loft to a minus setting to avoid the skyball and get more distance? I'm 82 yrs old (excuse me, experienced) from Daytona Beach and I did buy your VLS package, which I do find helpful.

Hi Todd. Mark from Sydney Australia. I have a question re teeing off on a par 3, using say an 8 iron. Would you tee up and hit up or down on the ball ? Alternatively would you just hit down on the ball with no tee ? Look forward to your reply. Regards Mark
I set up the way you demonstrate in the video, however the problem I have is, back surgery, I am unable to shift my hips through. I currently average 240 yards on my drives but would like to increase that number. My handicap is about 9 however my goal is 5 by the end of the year. I’ve been told ball flight is too high and I already have my drivers set to 8.5. What advice would you have for me!
Hi Todd... Two questions regarding driving. 1. Squaring the club face: When setting up the stance, is it better to set the driver on the ground and square the center of the face in the direction of the drive OR is it better to hold the club up in front of you, turn the face, (understanding that the driver face has a slight curve) and set your lead hand grip with the sweet spot perpendicular to the ground? 2. When starting the stance with your feet together and the grip center, moving your trailing leg back is going to turn the club face inward (draw). Should there be an adjustment by moving your grip a few inches toward the lead hip to effectively bring the face back to center? Thanks in advance and am picking up a number of valuable tidbits that have already helped my game as a 70 year old guy. Oh Ya, now living in Myrtle Beach.
Hi, from Bern Idaho, North of Bear Lake. I got tired of long winters so I bought a simulator and built a shed. With the low elevation I lost my distance, hope your video helps.
Let's make some progress this winter! If you want to continue your learning, check out our book THE BAD LIE where we cover this and so much more. You can find the book on Amazon
Saw Arnold Palmer in 1977 , play on my home course - En Joie Golf Cub , in the B.C. Open in Endicott, NY. It was a PGA event for about 30 years and is now a Champions Tour stop - the Dicks Sporting Goods Open.. He shot 65 in the first round and was tied with Lee Elder for the lead. He eventually faded from the leaderboard as the weekend went along - and as he left town he flew his plane over the course to say goodbye as bordering the course was a small regional airport that he had flown his plane in and out of in order to play in the tourney.
Allan Patrick - is there a drill or trick to avoid cupping of the wrists at the top? Tendency to cup trying to get to the top when I should be flexing the lead wrist.
Thanks for the reply. I'll try that. In focussing in on the wrists, I realized I need to go more up and forward from the takeaway position. I wass taking it inside a bit. Thanks again.
Regarding your last bonus tip. I took some lessons and was told about this. If you set your grip on your driver with the club head resting on the ground, your grip on the shaft is actually a bit too high. As you swing down, you are more likely to hit the ground first instead of just skimming the top of the grass and rising up a bit to strike the ball. Lifting the driver head up a bit before your backswing is actually going to help avoid striking the ground first. It works for me, when I remember to do it.
@@USGOLFTVshow Hi probably the hip turn ...I am 67 with two metal hips so I know that I don't turn enough. Going to try to work on this more ..Thanks again
You answered your own question about your Golden Nugget of hovering the driver, “it smooths out my take away”. I’ll try at the range and I’ve noticed some of the younger pros are doing that.
Thank you for watching David! We actually have a video on that topic: ruclips.net/video/HB_Itpd2iUQ/видео.html Be sure to check it out and let us know if you have any questions about it!
Todd, I have problem with tip 2. More comfortable and better when i leave weight 60/40 on lead foot thru my swing. It is better for me - one less thing to worry about- Rich
I have played lifting my club to the back of the ball my whole life. It always reminded me of T-Ball and I never pop it upor skull it that way just wish i could get more consistent and also hit my 18 degree off the fairway with no lice. I hit my 22 great not so much on the 18

Thank you. Are you following the Vertical Line Swing system?
yes sir@@USGOLFTVshow
Saw Arnold Palmer in 1977 , play on my home course - En Joie Golf Cub , in the B.C. Open in Endicott, NY. It was a PGA event for about 30 years and is now a Champions Tour stop - the Dicks Sporting Goods Open.. He shot 65 in the first round and was tied with Lee Elder for the lead. He eventually faded from the leaderboard as the weekend went along - and as he left town he flew his plane over the course to say goodbye as bordering the course was a small regional airport that he had flown his plane in and out of in order to play in the tourney.
Awesome story! Arnie flying his own plan over the tournament is classic, thanks for sharing.
Saint Louis, good stuff!

I saw Arnie at the 1994 PGA in Tulsa at Southern Hills which was his last PGA. Question on hovering - do you hover your irons as well?
Had to be hot in Tulsa that time of the year. Yes, you can hover the irons as well, we do it mostly however with the driver.
@@USGOLFTVshow yes it was scorching. Same as the year Tiger won it there. Thanks for your videos - they help tremendously.
Allan Patrick - is there a drill or trick to avoid cupping of the wrists at the top? Tendency to cup trying to get to the top when I should be flexing the lead wrist.
Feel like your knuckles are pointing to the sky at the top. This will help keep the face closed to square. Hope that helps...
Thanks for the reply. I'll try that. In focussing in on the wrists, I realized I need to go more up and forward from the takeaway position. I wass taking it inside a bit. Thanks again.
Pittsburgh watching!
Thanks for watching James!
Good tips. Weddington, NC. Originally from Rossford Ohio, go Bucks.

Saskatchewan Canada
It worked well for Mr. Nicklaus, can't be too bad. Thanks for posting

Great to hear! What is the best course in Jamaica?

Thanks for watching and commenting Paul! Which tip did you find most helpful for you?
@@USGOLFTVshow Hi probably the hip turn ...I am 67 with two metal hips so I know that I don't turn enough. Going to try to work on this more ..Thanks again
I saw Arnie at Cherry Creek country club back in the 60’s. Pretty cool.
Did he win that year?
I don’t remember
You answered your own question about your Golden Nugget of hovering the driver, “it smooths out my take away”. I’ll try at the range and I’ve noticed some of the younger pros are doing that.
63. Alabama. I got to see Arnold Palmer in his final Masters appearance. Still have the program book.
What an experience. Arny was a legend of the game!
i'm a beginner player from Miami . Can we be friends ? maybe we can share knowledge and practice when we have chance ☺
Great tips. Tarpon springs Fl. What about learning how to play with Parkinson’s

Hi Todd, I noticed that you lifted your left heel as do I. Otherwise I it hurts or I am restricted in swing. I am now in my 70’s and from the UK.
Yes, we like the lead heal lift for most our players. It is a great way to increase range of motion. Hope you are enjoying the channel.
@@USGOLFTVshow Yes I do enjoy the channel very much. Thank you very much for your excellent teaching.
have the maxvert. straighter generally than my TSI, but 20 yards shorter.
Todd, I have problem with tip 2. More comfortable and better when i leave weight 60/40 on lead foot thru my swing. It is better for me - one less thing to worry about- Rich
You are a Stack and Tilt guy, nothing wrong with that my friend.
👏👏👏👍 Seminole a town in west Texas
All valuable tips, but would have LIKED to see the NUMBERS on a Trackman, e.g. carry, total, spin, x-factor.

I have played lifting my club to the back of the ball my whole life. It always reminded me of T-Ball and I never pop it upor skull it that way just wish i could get more consistent and also hit my 18 degree off the fairway with no lice. I hit my 22 great not so much on the 18

Welcome, hope you are enjoying the channel.
I saw Mr. Palmer play in the 1980's at a tournament in Maryland. I was standing close to a man in a wheel chair. Mr. Palmer saw the man and walked over and spoke with him a few minutes and shook his hand. Mr. Palmer was a geniunely decent man.
Thank you for sharing this story. Mr. Palmer was a class act and made a huge impact on those of us who love this game.

Good tips but I did not see you hover the driver in #1-#5. Maybe camera angle didn't show it.

My theory on hovering the driver off the ground enables the golfer to have a smooth take away of the golf club.
Agree, we expand on the concept in this video ruclips.net/video/p62YLWEf1Wo/видео.htmlsi=Heue6HGzl_gffUFn
