      @Chris Howell Hi Chris,
      There are lots of trailers that offer theater seating instead of a dinette...Grand design 17MKE and the Geo Pro 19 or 19.5 are 2 good examples. I would suggest going onto RV Trader and using the filters to try to find what you are looking for. You can filter by year, length and you can type in Theater seat into the keyword filter.
      I hope you can find it! We recently had the same experience with a Class A floor plan we fell in love with. I thought we would never find it again but we did eventually find it on RVTrader.com
      Hope that helps!
      Mike

    • @cjc1103

      You would need a fifth wheel with a rounded nose cap, and a slider hitch or similar device. It greatly depends on how you set it up, and in my opinion is more trouble than it's worth. You need a 3/4 ton truck with a 6.5 ft bed, there are plenty of guides, towing capacity, payload capacity vary greatly. Get the right rig the first time instead of trying to make something you have work.

      Do you mean tow the 5th wheel with a half ton truck? If so we agree. These should only really be towed by the newer 1/2 ton pickup trucks. Older pickups may not be able to handle the weight...

    I have a 2014 Lite five Winnebago Fifth Wheel 26RKS (29ft) purchased in 2013, I have been towing it for 9 years with a Silverado 1500. No problems and we have been from Maine to South Carolina, and all over the finger lakes and PA with it. Truck has 150 miles it and it just did an amazing trip Connecticut to Ohio. We brought the truck the same time we brought the RV and the dealer said no problem and installed the fifth wheel hitch for us.

    At 1700 lbs cargo capacity, our half ton would just barely be able to tow the lightest of these three. Unless of course you don’t plan on filling the trucks gas tank or having a passenger or 2 on board. Great reviews, nice units. But really questioning how a half ton would legally tow any of these.

    Concur with many other posters. '1/2 ton towable' is marketing hype. The 3 trailers you highlight MAY be able to be safely hauled by about 5%-10% of 1/2 ton trucks on the road.....these would fall into the 'properly equipped tow vehicle' CYA disclaimer you'll find in the RV owner's manual. You would likely need a special ordered unicorn F150 HDPP, lightly equipped to have enough payload to handle any non-Scamp type 5'ver.
    The average pin weight on a 10K GVWR 5'ver will be about 2200 lbs (22% of GVWR).....not the 'dry' brochure weights published by the manufacturer. No one is towing a trailer without pots, pans, grills, clothes, hoses, power cords, propane, battery etc.
    As the payload capacity on a modestly equipped 1/2 ton truck will be about 1800 lbs, you would be 400 lbs over truck payload on a 10K trailer before any occupants, gear and the hitch were even factored in. Easy to see a 10K 5'ver putting an average 1/2 ton truck 1000 lbs over payload cap when all is said and done. Even many 3/4 ton diesels (due to engine weight) would bust payload on a 10K 5th wheel!

      We traded in our 150 for a 250 to tow our 6000-pound trailer because we were close to maxing out the payload capacity. I would never dream of pulling a 5th wheel with a 1/2 ton that's just insane.

      So True, So True! Just the fact that they have to keep touting that a 1/2 ton can pull these is a sure sign. They get unsuspecting RVer’s who believe this unsafe information. Better off to buy a 3/4 ton without all the bells and whistles then to pull these with a 1/2 ton. We never pull more than 2/3 the max recommended tow weight. Just our preference.

      @@RVBlogger You made me go hunt through pictures - Good job! We started with a F150 Lariat, 4 doors short bed truck and I pulled up the picture of the door tag and the payload on the truck was 1432. With a hitch weight of 1,192 this only gives me 240 pounds of available payload. My F-250 diesel has 2,118 pounds of payload so just shy of 1,000 pounds more. I personally would still add a tidbit about payload because guaranteed Grand Design has way more liability insurance than you. They are fantastic trailers and I wish they passed the driveway test because if they did I might be getting a 5th wheel (driveway is 25 feet long so trailer has to be shorter than 25 feet). Have a great day and happy camping.

    Look at the cargo capacity sticker on your half ton pickup and you’ll find your number. The more bells whistles you have the lower your cc. What they mean when they say half ton is a properly spec’d half ton, and that should be criminal. It is unethical. The cc on most half tons is in the low to mid teens. Add a hitch, batteries, propane, people, supplies, air bags and there’s nothing left. 1,200 lb hitch weight plus your hitch and a driver, and even the most stout half ton is at its limit or over. Remember, the weight of the truck and the size of the brakes make huge difference.

I just looked up the specs and saw that there are a limited select few 1/2-ton trucks that can legally tow these trailers. I highly suggest that if you are thinking about towing one of these with a half-ton truck, to verify your towing specs on the truck first, because not ALL 1/2-ton trucks can tow these trailers. however, it was a nice trailer review.

Yes, It's truly a nightmare accident waiting to happen. Family's get killed every year from advice just like this. The RVs are so good looking, the buyer trys to make it work on a less expensive 1/2 ton truck and the family ends up in the hospital with the RV scattered all over the roadway....

    Based on my personal experience, I would NEVER tow a trailer with a GVWR above 6,000 pounds and a total length over 25 feet with a 1/2 ton truck, regardless of the tow package. Any trailers above those limits are in 3/4 ton range. With the trailers described in this video, a 3/4 ton truck or larger is mandatory. Weights aside, the wind resistance of trailers this large would be unmanageable with a half ton truck.

    Fun fact if you buy a brand new half ton pickup and then you install a fifth wheel hitch you have voided your warranty because you have to modify the frames in order to make the hitch work because they don't make hitches for half-ton pickups and you have to buy it for 3 quarter ton pickup also your resale value drops dramatically because you have now cause frame damage to your vehicle because it was not designed to have weight pulled on the frame rails in that manner I work in the automotive field and when we find a half ton truck with a fifth wheel hitch is always assumed that the vehicle has frame damage and is not recommended by the manufacturer or anyone else to put any over the axle hitch and because of the damage it will cause.

      @RVBlogger it is common practice amongst dealers. A part of my job is finding frame damage on used vehicles. We are required to report all fithwheel hitches but if we find a 1/2 ton truck with one we are required to report it as frame damage not olny because you have to drill holes in the frame to mount it but because of the pressure on the smaller frame. There are holes in the frames of larger trucks from the factory because they expect it will have one at some point. My recommendation is to spend a little bit more for the gas powerd 3/4 ton truck. It will last longer and maintain its value better.

    BS, Do not pull a 5th wheel with a half ton truck. The pin weight on this 5th wheel is almost 1200 lbs. before you even put gas, cargo, humans in the truck you are already pushing the limits of a half ton truck. RV manufacturers will say whatever they can to get your money with no regard to your safety. I pulled an almost 8000 lb trailer with a Tundra that was "rated" to pull 10,500lb let me tell you it was all the truck could do to get up over mountains and back down. Not to mention have you ever tried to get 35' camper and truck into a gas station??? LOL that is an adventure in itself.

      I pull similar with a Ram 1500 with a very slightly higher tow rating (11,460). I've not had problems you've described over about 15,000 towing miles. The Hemi does seem to run out of breath a bit more easily at 9,000+ feet, but I expected that with a normally aspirated engine. I could go the speed I wanted, it's just not much reserve. My trailer (Apex UL 253RLS) is about 30 feet butt to ball, I never thought it exceptionally hard to maneuver around fuel islands. It's big, you've got to be careful and watch your tail swing. Not a problem.

    I hate when they say 1/2 Ton towable because it’s under 10k but yet the tongue weight is well over 1500 lbs. That eliminates it from the 1/2 Ton towable.

      @@vmxg8052 perhaps on the first unit. Not the others! Besides, dry weight really doesn't count. You must go off your loaded weight. Fifth wheels transfer 15-20% onto the pin, which transfers to the tow vehicle. These units are more suited to 3/4 tons and bigger!

    First 5 wheel would be 1/2 ton towable with a Factory Ordered Max towing Package, still better with a 3/4 ton, but doable even X-country. 2nd one is HD 1/2 ton towable as long as you stay out of mountains and limit trips to a few hundred miles tops, and planning on staying week stays at each site. The std. tow packages on 1/2 tons cannot handle this size 5 wheel. The Largest 5 Wheel in this video could only be towed by a HD1/2 ton to a close location for the season. For instance, a beach campground. \
    For reference i occasionally tow a 12,000 lb. equipment trailer with a GCVW 9,000 to +11,000 loads using a 1/2 ton with a rare Factory Ordered Max towing Package and added air bags. You will not find this type of 1/2 ton on a dealer lot. Were towing be part of my day job, I would want a 3/4 ton, however a capable 1/2 ton for everyday use rides so much better and uses 75% of the gas.

    • @michaelwitzgall9345
      @michaelwitzgall9345 Год назад

      On second though, as I've never had a white knuckle, soil my draws experience towing with my equipment trailer, along with moving a 30ft travel trailer on occasion, towing with our max payload/tow package 1/2 ton, just don't tow with a 1/2 don unless you are like me, a general calculated risk taker with a squad of guardian angels.

    I love this series. We have a Coachmen 246RKS that we love but a tree fell on it and it is totaled! We just replaced our F250 diesel with an F350 diesel so no problem with these units. We do not want to go too big. Somebody needs to clarify the term “half ton towable”! Newbies think “I can tow this with my half ton pickup “! Wrong! The correct meaning is some properly equipped half ton trucks may tow this safely. Some as in few! Towing involves pulling, controlling, and stopping your rig! Why would you risk the lives of your family by taking a chance. Get the heavier truck with the bigger brakes! Of course you could end up with an F350 like mine whose brake controller does not work due to poorly written software!
    Keep up the good videos and give your wife more screen time!

    Nice video , the thing that’s kills the first 2 fifth wheels is you have to put the slide out to get to the bedroom & bathroom . After pulling a fifth wheel for about 30,000 miles in the last 6 years there are times it’s just does not work . There are times you just need to sleep or use the bathroom & leave the slide in .

    Looks like they have ducted air conditioning! The big 12 volt refers are impressive. I wonder if they have an adequate battery set up to handle that load off-grid. Grand Design seems to be popular for good reason. Still, wish they would lighten up the decor inside. Soo much storage in these, that I can't imagine using it all. I love the RearKitchen model. $60k and up is a big price tag, but worth it if you are using it a lot or living in it. We are trying to downsize from our travel trailer, not go bigger, however, there is a lot to like in these fifth wheels. I am not sure about hauling that much weight with a half-ton truck, tail waggin' the dog, and all that. I would recommend caution when choosing your tow vehicle. Thank you for sharing these RVs with us!

      No, these generally come with one 12 Volt lead-acid battery. You can’t draw more than 50% of the battery capacity with this setup, so unless you upgrade your system, you won’t have the juice for Boondocking. I currently have 2 lead acid batteries I’m getting ready to replace, and they didn’t have the power to do much of anything off-grid without my generator.

    Every video on half ton towables will be accompanied by the “no half ton should to this” crowd spouting gloom and doom predictions. I have towed literally thousands of miles with a 2020 F-150 3.5 ecoboost with max tow package. My Open Range 297rls is well within the limits on tow capacity and hitch weight. I run 10 ply tires, have Tembrels on the axles and the 10 speed transmission in tow mode eliminates any pushing that may occur on steep grades. With the right combination of truck and trailer it is more than possible, within the legal limits and certainly safe.

    How does your truck tow the 5th wheel camper? What is your tow capacity and your dry weight of your 5th wheel? I have a 2022 2.7 EcoBoost super crew with a 10,100 towing capacity. Hi Rodney, we recommend that you never tow more than 80% of your max tow capacity. So you would need a 5th wheel that weighs about 8,000 lbs GVWR so you are looking at a 5th wheel that weighs around 6,000 lbs so when you add 2,000 lbs of gear and supplies you are at about 8,000 lbs.

With minor differences they are practically sister RV's. Enough so that it is going to come down to a coin flip. What will probably settle the score will be the warranties and which company serves their customers better. Do you or your subscribers have any information to share about warranty differences and customer service of Grand Design versus Keystone Cougar? Thanks for the video. Very helpful and informative!! I agree with Susan on the 278BH, and we have the very similar 2017 Jayco 29.5BHDS, which has almost the same bunk area. The living room/kitchen areas are so much better though! We got ours for grandkid travels after two trips with setting up the couch and dinette every night for two weeks with our then Wildcat Maxx travel trailer, quite the pain! We’ve since had two long summer trips with the Jayco and so much better to have a ready to go area for them. When they don’t travel with us, it is extra storage. Another great review video. I love the magazine too!!!

    Well done! Love all the counter space in the kitchens. I'm surprised with fifth wheels that big and spacious they didn't use king beds. Being tall I appreciate the higher mounting for the showerhead, too, but why didn't the shower door frames reach all the way up to the ceiling? There's a huge gap there. Doesn't some water splash out?

    • @RVBlogger

      The shower doors don't go to the ceiling so you can vent the steam out of the shower. Steam in an RV is a big problem.

    Suggestion: Become more familiar with 1/2 ton truck load ratings and what it's like for a 1/2 ton truck to tow these weights up and down significant grades. Also, after living mostly off-grid for 12 years while relying on 12V refrigeration and its 24/7/365 battery demands, I'm thankful for our absorption system. 12V refrigeration sounds easier...but isn't unless plugged in or it comes with a very large/$$$$ solar/battery system.

    NO way would I attempt to pull that with a 1/2 T PU and I've been pulling RV trailers for going on 33 years! Pulling loaded weight maybe okay but still a struggle for a 1/2T gas, payload...no way! Most likely close to or at max payload for any 1/2T before even loading truck and trailer!

I've towed heavy bumper pull trailers in the past, and the wind was a bit problematic. The one we had was a 2001 27-ft bumper pull that was about 8000 lbs loaded. It was definitely an adventure pulling that one in the wind.

    After watching just the first two or three of these I can see why people are questioning the 1/2 ton towable description. It’s because they have trucks that are pre 2019 in model year. The brand new 2022 Ram 1500 has a tow rating of over 12,000 lbs and thats trailer weight. A fifth wheel by its very design will be easier to tow than a trailer. Thats part of the selling point of a fifth wheel. Of course you lose most if not all of your truck bed except maybe a tool box up against the cab. I suggest people have a look at some of the new Ram pickups. I was just in a Ram 1500 crew cab 4x4 short bed with a towing capacity in excess of 12,000 lbs and that wasn’t even the 🔝 of the line model. I think you can even look online at them. Makes you wonder what a 2500 can do lol

    • @BigBirdNest
      @BigBirdNest 2 года назад +6

      Tow rating isn’t the concern, I have a 2020 Ram 1500, crew cab, 4x4 and my payload capacity is just over 1400lbs…. The very first trailer he shows has a 1200lbs pin weight while it’s empty, then add close to 100 for your actual 5th wheel hitch. So to tow that trailer empty, I would be left with 100lbs available payload for my truck and that would be for me, my wife, and 2 kids, pets, and any other cargo that might go in the truck. In my opinion, there is no such thing as a half ton towable 5th wheel
