Dr. Peterson! I'm 18 years-old and trapped inside of a perpetual Purgatory but I escaped Hell thanks to you. Over the last year and a half you opened up my eyes to the fact that there is a lot of order and stability on which my culture rests.. guided at least at its core by Judeo-Christian values. I've mostly stayed away from the social world but when I talk, I often accidentally imitate the characteristic themes of your speaking. The patterns of thought you've outlined in "Maps of Meaning" and "Personality and its Transformations" often encourage me during daily runs, weight-lifting, or while I strive stupidly and blindly to be "the best dish-washer" and prep person at Taco Bell. I struggle severely with amphetamine addiction to motivate myself to sit stupidly and quietly in college.. long enough to find real meaning and truth buried in the shallowness and ease of a lot of classes and the "tacit" mentalities of my classmates. I'm trying to quit and I'm making the most meaningful moral choices that I can conjure up.
Maybe it's stupid to pretend I'm writing this to you specifically but screw it. I'm sick of repressing my words to conform to the shallowness of the world. You made Christianity meaningful to me. You saved my life by awakening possibility in me. And even though I've hit a long plateau for the last 9 months, I'm treading it with a certain superordinate grace and faith. God bless you.

@S1Cool Gratitude is the key to fighting depression. I wrote a list of 10 things I was grateful for when I was living in my bed and just wanted to die and it worked! I was a homeless veteran and now I express my gratitude for having a roof over me and my dog. My friends died around me as a 35-year-old so I ended up without any other friends left. Its easy to feel sorry for yourself and the pain inside is driving you insane. Now I am over the worst part and have rewired my brain into another type of thinking! If I did it as a suicidal drug-addict anyone can????!!!!

To do something good for another person Is a great way to fight depression and anxiety. I gave myself the task of finding at least one stranger to help like giving a homeless man a meal or helping an old lady with her groceries. I spent 7 years in bed in a deep depression after several friends who were around 35 years old like me and my closest and dearest souls and they died for one reason or the other pre-pandemic. Practising being Grateful by starting each morning to get together a list of 10 things I was grateful for, no matter how significant it might seem, and together with tons of prayers by only focusing on gratitude got me out of my bed and back into life again.

    - Stop drinking or at least stop binge drinking.
    - Get to bed early and get enough sleep. (this is crucial)
    - Get out every day.
If any of those are difficult, talk to your doc about meds to help get you where you need to be. Therapy is hit or miss unfortunately, but it's worth trying if your insurance covers it.

I was depressed my entire life and occasionally still experience it. Now I have the tools to fight it though.
My mother nvr missed a chance to tell me what a "space cadet" and "loser" I was. I realized, in alcoholic anonymous al-anon that it was her voice in my head that was the main cause of my self-destructive behavior. Took me years of therapy to understand this and forgive her. I willingly cared for her in her last painful years of life (yup, ME, the black sheep) and was finally able to forgive her, bc I realized she was projecting what was done to her.
Forgiveness brings peace, and that, with taking responsibility for my own life choices, is how I moved forward.
God bless you, Dr. Peterson. You're truly a gift from God to today's confused world!! ❤❤❤🙏

I didn't grow up Christian but I found out that the concepts written about in the bible are literally real, not just metaphorically. Jordan Peterson was a blessing for me having a map of why the values really mattered but when I found out the literalness I realised there was a spirit world full of evil. And the reason I'm saying that is because the devil deeply wants to make people miserable, disobedient of God and full of darkness and lack of hope. So I wanna say that although I don't know the details and I wasn't in the exact same position as you , Jesus lifted me straight out of that place and gave me a real relationship with the Father and protection from the devil. It doesn't mean everything is always perfect and it doesn't mean the devil doesnt try to tempt and afflict and all that. - but Jesus has proved to be genuinely trustworthy and real - beyond my understanding no matter how wise my decisions are. When we're in sin and lack of faith, pathways to evil open up and allow it to afflict us more, when we put things on Jesus he can keep us spiritually safe - the big stumbling block is often choosing our own will and understanding over God. not every church is amazing. But Jesus is faithful. and the other lesson I learnt was drawing near to him and not waiting for some sort of miracle allowed me to open myself a lot more to him and eventually the assurance of his existence came anyway. Praying and being in the bible has been a complete refuge me and the devil tried very hard to keep me away from that - he even keeps Christians away from that where he can. It's not just a comfort, it's a spiritual reality which much of this dark world tries to keep us away from or doubting. We can still make mistakes while we're on the right path but the important thing is we're on the right path. The important part is that we have the core of his mercy and salvation - that our sins/disobedience (conscious or unconscious) of God - the source of goodness have kept us away from him and in darkness and lead us into an eternity without him because there is no darkness in him - and that what Jesus did on the cross was a sacrifice so that God was just in allowing us to have complete mercy and access to him and eternity with him in love and goodness when we put our trust in him and turn ourselves from darkness and disobedience. This is a real thing and may not make sense at first but i'm glad God allowed me to face some consequences of my actions to see how true this is. God bless you
Apologies if this is a messily written message but I hope you get the point, and if it seems right and good for you to do so then pray to the Father for truth in Jesus name and for his guidance and salvation (which everybody needs no matter how well they're doing)

Seein Dr. Peterson bringing wisdom to a captive crowd is a thing I only imagined, but at the time, the turn of the decade I thought of him as a more reserved college professor at most, involved accidentaly into chaos by political activists who would share bits of knowledge to young (at the time) people. I'm glad this is actually happening, amazing. Those who kicked him out of the system and took away his license out of malice made this happen, thankfully he conquered this dragon and is using it as flying mount. I can't help but smile seeing these losers seething and him thriving.

One of the things people may know that you don't is about you. We tend to think we know ourselves best. That simply isn't true. We know ourselves uniquely. We see ourselves from an internal perspective that no one else can. That doesn't make it better or more complete than any other perspective, just different. In fact, we often miss things about ourselves because of that internal perspective. Listen when people describe you there is something to it. Listening doesn't mean heed; they might also be talking trash.

I know this is a great community so I decided to come here to get some advice. So recently I have been kind of the person everyone goes to if they need to get stuff of their shoulders, which I’m glad to be there for them don’t get me wrong, but it has started to weigh on me. And I’ve had a lot of stuff happen in my life, but over all I have a good life. But recently I have been getting more and more depressed so I went to my mom and asked her to take me to a doctor and therapy and all of that. I only told her that I have been very sad and I just wanted someone to talk to. I didn’t tell her that I have harmed myself and has suicidal thoughts because she has said that only attention seekers to that stuff. So she scheduled an appointment and told my dad about it so when I went to his house we started talking and he was talking about how my step sister needs therapy and that he doesn’t think I need it because I’m fine. So then I called my mom and told her to cancel the appointment she made and she said that he was right because I don’t have anything major going on. But then she started comparing me to my friend, who does not have it very good at all. She basically said that my friend has it super bad off and that I should be grateful that I have a good life and that I need to be there for my friend. And I am there for my friend they will call be balling their eyes out and I’ll try to be there the best I can for them. But they never ask me how I’m doing and if I start talking about my issues they will start comparing our problems. But I am kind of lost on what to do now because it just keeps getting worse. I’m open to any advice whether it’s in my favor or not. Thank you all!

I might not be as hopeless as I think considering I came up with this exact strategy on my own but I'd like to point out that scale shouldn't just be 1-10 (depression) but from -10 up to +10 (Depressed X Happy/Maniacal). I think it's slightly more accurate and gives more leeway for unexpected swings of mood (which was very useful in my case..). The problem is I never truly figured out what was causing the changes. They seemed random and, for the most part, not corelated with any external influences. I guess the only thing to do here, as always, is to try again like a madman, repeating things and expecting different results.

In the event that you begin to feel useful to other people, particularly your family, you will never again experience feelings of depression.
It is possible to recover from depression. Simply take things easy and look for a reason to function.

Quitting caffeine fixed my depression. I once spent every day wanting to end it all. I had no self esteem. No motivation. No creativity. Stuck in the loop. It turned out caffeine caused my episodes. Society doesn’t talk about this but we are ADDICTED and it’s causing a depression epidemic. Just look at how many caffeinated drinks there are at the local 7-Eleven. Look at all the kids holding a Frappuccino after school.

How did you even discover that? I would think that's a rare thing, and it's rarely one trigger for a person. I have to skip coffee some days due to stomach issues. it makes no difference, other than that I'm more tired that day. I drink small amounts that add up to a large mug or so a day, so I doubt it's that. One of my small pleasures in a sea of crap and getting by. Plus it used to be seasonal, where over half the year I was normal.

@@saintejeannedarc9460 Could probably be a case of overuse, or maybe a problematic association of coffee drinking with numbing the feeling of dopamine absence...while at the same time facilitating coffee-provoked anxiety, but the kind of anxiety that your unaware of, because the dopamine dose gives a feeling of "good-procedure-followed" that overshadows the realization of anxiety, although it is there. Self defeat is more bitter than honestly failing after trying your best because if you do your best and fail, you’ve learned something that may help you succeed next time but self-defeat is failure because you’re too lazy or cowardly to try. You decide your fate. If you’re a natural coward you can overcome it through effort. The same is true of lazy people. All it takes is effort. Tell failure to get out of your head; there’s no room for it there and it doesn’t pay rent anyway.

I urge you to seek out a Catholic priest to talk to, or at least a legit, Christian-based psychology practice. They can do a world of good! Also, if there is anything of the occult or mildly occult in your life -- anything at all, like dark-themed video games, movies, TV shows, books, etc.,... or individuals in your life who are fascinated by that stuff... root all of it out of your life immediately and forever. Things like ouija boards, tarot cards, witchcraft, or magic spells, or even seemingly benign things like horoscopes or yoga can lead to darker stuff.
Next step is to root out anything that involves heavy internet use.

My advice. Find a provider willing to test you for meds that will work for you genetically, in addition to other things people are mentiining on here. A small town dr of mine did dna testing thru Geomind for me. I have been on so many different SSRIs over the years, only to still be painfully depressed and anxious. The thing about my depression was no matter how beautiful a place i was in life, i felt emotional pain without reason. I was starting to give up after a lifetime of depression, thinking that i may be treatment resistant. My dna testing found i have MTHFR gene issues that affect B Vitamin usage, not allowing them to be used entirely. B vitamins affect mood chemicals in the brain. Geomind identified drugs that will work and what would cause side effects or not be effective. Two prescription changes and i started living my life for the first time. I understand why people are happy. Now i can feel it. For the first time in 40 years. No depression. Feeling happiness and gratitude daily for my life. Annoying everyone i come across because i am in a good mood! I am devoted to my faith i will honestly say faith is the only thing that kept me here for many years. I thought i would die young but now hope to live to old age because the crushing pain of suffering is over. I have been healed. It can happen for you even if you feel you have tried everything. Try geomind testing

Hi - God bless you. I never used to be a Christian but in 2021 i found out that the spirit world and Jesus and that basically everythign written in the bible is literally real. And Jesus saved me from darkness I was in. The devil wants us to be miserable, to lose hope and to constantly associate everything with shame and condemnation. But God sent Jesus because even though every human being has disobeyed God, sinned and done wrong (whether conscious or not) and fallen short even by their own standards - which has extremely big consequences for our souls, because God is the pure source of love, goodness and life, so when we disconnect from him I believe it's disconnect from goodness itself - one small wrong part on a helicopter can make things go very wrong (sorry couldnt think of a good enough analogy lol). But even though have all these consequences which we do "deserve" - God sent Jesus to give us mercy and lift us out of that by living a perfect life, being a perfect example and being a sacrifice so that he could fairly/justly "pay the fine" for our sins and allow us to be saved by putting our trust in Jesus and obeying him - once we do that we're no longer trusting ourselves for salvation and goodness but we're trusting in God and God is living through us. Once we let go of what's hurting ourselves we are able to pick up what helps us. And praying and reading the bible (particular the new testament) was a complete refuge to me when I came to God. the devil literally tried to keep me away from those things and he constantly tries to lie to us, make us think his ideas and thoughts are our own, and pull us into temptation, lack of hope and condemnation - but Jesus has already set the path for us and saved us. We simply need to walk in obedience - and what saves us our trust in him (and I believe his sacrifice), not our own deeds/works. It's not always been perfect or easy but the more we draw near to God and stay away from darkness and keep asking him for truth the more clear it becomes - and one of the biggest gems for me has been realising that if we draw near to God first before waiting for any sort of miracle or anything - then our feet will be on solid paths and for me atleast it has become very very clear it's literally real. So God bless you. If some of this stuff sounds weird or overly religious don't worry too much. The important thing is a loving relationship with a heavenly Father who literally knows you and loves you - so just ask him - Jesus says "Ask and you will receive, seek and you will find" and as we draw nearer to him we find out exactly what that means. Obviously I don't know your situation , I pray God will bless you. For me a big thing has been leaning on God and not my own understanding and being careful of that pride, and knowing that when we sin/disobey God - evil has ways of getting in - and the devil loves putting temptation in our way the moment we are climbing out of darkness so yea. If this is a lot of information I wouldn't worry too much - Jesus allows us to have strength in him and not ourselves so we don't have to know everything or do everything from our own innate might. Even if the stars don't align immediately, it's unbelievable how good and merciful God is - and if we stay steadfast it begins to take shape , especially if we keep seeking truth and understanding. Just a side note: I don't personally recommend catholicism at all and I believe there are a lot of other churches which stay more faithful to the bible - but yeah not tryna make this super denominational or anything. God is good and knows our hearts. hope things get better for u and apologies if this is an insanely long comment ive just been tryna stream of consciousness share some truth which has absolutely saved my life on the deepest level. We speak against lies of the enemy in Jesus' name
