And I agree that Timmy, Ray and Loraine are being negatively impacted. bc of the others lying and corruption. And like Mark, I never thought Kenny would be in cahoots with the lying etc . I was so sure Mark wouldn’t send them any more money directly, because of the last episode but again I was wrong.
I was looking forward to Mark filming Timmy upon receiving his gift box, but I guess that’s not going to happen. If I could only get the Whitakers address, I would send the package directly, but I have no way of knowing it other than through Mark, and he’s not answering me! I feel the same way. In the last video Betty said she lied because BJ told her to do so. When she said that, it reminded me of something a kid might say. BJ also admitted she told Betty to lie. Therefore I agree Betty isn't capable of, concocting these stories on her own.
Betty knows well what she's doing don't be fooled she's the one running the show down there. The whole family came from nothing with nothing and then Mark came into their lives with what seemed to them like endless funds so they milked it until there was no milk left. Betty was never even appreciative for everything she got. The shopping trip that time she packed all the trollies and never even said thanks

I am really getting tired of so many saying there's nothing for anyone in Appalachia but a life of addiction. My father was born in a log cabin just a few minutes down the road from the Whittakers. We were very poor, even for the area, throughout my youth. I was absolutely surrounded by alcohol, illicit drugs, and all manner of familial disfunction. Like many, I did not graduate high school. However, I chose to do more - to become better. After having lived in W.Va., Ky., Oh., and Tx., we now live back in West Virginia, about an hour from where this video was shot. Life is a perpetual string of choices, and our position is the outcome of those choices. Whether a person is poor, wealthy, healthy, or strung out has absolutely nothing to do with their surroundings, unless that person hasn't the intellectual capacity to take care of themselves. The only thing needed to "fix" this state, region, country, and even world is an awakening of individual responsibility.
'Like many, I did not graduate high school.' Why not? Education and work is the way out of a poor environment. Without either, there is nothing left?
I’ve lived in 10 states and 7 major cities. There is just as much to do here as anywhere. The problem is the addict doesn’t want to do anything but get high just like the drunk addict who wants to do nothing but drink. There are millions from every part in America including major cities who will say the exact same about the major city they live in. What this mentality is is a cope and I say that as someone who said it 10 times. We tell ourselves it’s the area we are from that’s the problem not us. It eliminates accountability when there is somewhere to run away to. “Oh when I just relocate to so and so everything will be glorious” lol Moving away all those times all it did was shorten my life and make my drug of choice harder to find at the time.
@@eattherich9215that’s also not true at all. It can help the odds sometimes depending on what you educate yourself in but my dad has 6 siblings. All of them except one including my dad have a masters degree. The except one the youngest quit school in the 7th grade. He is richer than all other 6 combined and lives in southern WV. He owns numerous trailer parks in Mercer county

Your environment molds and creates you. It has been studied and proven. Lets not judge these people. There is a drug crisis throughout America. You can be rich or poor. Addiction does not care.
Mark we all know you have been so very incredibly helpful to this family....WAY TO HELPFUL.....I am a recovering addict....one thing u should NEVER do is hand a STRUGGLING ADDICT money!!! Yes...He was honest with u and had admitted he just got out of rehab and is already using again....but, unfortunately I can guarantee if u hand him the cash to leave WV, the money will be going to his next fix... And The money you give him could be what kills him.... So if you want to help him PLEASE DON'T give him cash.... Purchase his ticket for him instead!!

After working as a social worker in Appalachia I can say the family is paramount. The Whitaker’s are too simple to understand drug addiction and they will bow down to family especially if they are being threatened by that addict. They’re not taking advantage they are stuck

Do not blame or bash the family. None of this happened until Larry came around. They are not doing it intentionally, they are either under threat or completely unaware of how it’s negatively affecting them. They got a new trailer, ray got his knee fixed, they had food, furniture then Larry and bj came and always had their hand out.
I politely disagree with you. The whole of the family developed a sense of entitlement. The only two, who exhibit pure, childlike joy (and gratitude) when Mark shows up, are Ray and Timmy. The rest have learned to grift and to grift well. They have learned something else. They have all learned collectively how to scheme. I have not seen any evidence of empathy, compassion, or gratitude in Betty. She remains entitled and ungrateful. There is one more thing. I hate to say it out loud. I concede that the whole of the family has been dealt some bad cards. However, they have also "learned" to be somewhat lazy.

Those words SHOULD hurt coming off your lips. We have a severely, physically and mentally disabled family, the product of unspeakable, deeply rooted, evil and arguably sadistic and torturous in nature, tragedies and you’re talking about their work ethic. Imagine the trauma that pains them constantly that they can’t even dictate and if they ever did I’m sure they were severely punished. Achievable task for them, are most likely not going to meet most standards for any job in their area. In the impossibility of them being able to meet such standards; mental and physical strain would become a huge hurdle. They are not “scheming” they are trying to eat and have a place to lay their head. They have family members who I’m sure are emotionally handicapped by similar traumas but not affected physically or cognitively, who aren’t very good people. They found a money pit. Disabled people don’t have to be child like they can be humans jaded by misinformation or personal opinions just like anybody else.

You genuinely believe the disabled person who feeds and bathes her disabled loved ones jeopardized everyone’s well being so a cousin can get high? These people don’t have a malice bone in their body, they are simply trying to get by.

If you're truly done with them, be done with them. That means not checking in, not contacting them or anyone connected with them, AND not continually complaining about it how you were wronged when you don't. If you're expecting anything out of it, perhaps you're not giving that freely and you have expectations. You don't need to prove to anyone (including yourself) that you're a good person. One thing with trying to help people is that you are never guaranteed and outcome and it's important to remember that going in.
But I am selfish and want to see more! I find the videos so calming watching them as I fall asleep that family on the porch. Yes weird I know lol

Mark. Can hear the pain in your heart as you struggle to make sense of the betrayal from the Whittaker's and the loss of Rebecca. I hope you can heal and learn from these life experiences. You simply have to accept that "It's their life journey". You see all the possibilities of what these people's lives could be, according to the world you know. They have no concept, desire or even ability to desire or grasp what you are offering. They are taking their life journey in a way that is familiar and therefore comfortable.
Please continue the amazing video interviews that are so unique to your life's work. You continue to capture the only body of work that will be a historical review of how life is really lived in this time in history.
I was a Hospice Nurse for 30 years. I had the privilege of working with thousands of people and their families. The best part of my job was listening to each persons life story. Just people - waking up every day, living their life, going to bed at night. Yet, every one of them had done some amazing things that had touched and changed the course of so many others. People that lived in a cardboard box under a freeway overpass in L. A. to one of the richest families in America living in unfathomable wealth. I wish I had been able to record their stories.
Best to you Mark. Keep recording these stories. Learn to accept that you cannot change their lives. Your talent is to capture the truth of their journey. Recognize, celebrate and embrace your unique gifts.

Mark why are you giving money to a man who violently SA a 12 year old at 22 years old? He lies about it saying she lied and that he was 20. it was a violent assault on a 12 year old. He may feel bad about it but there is no way that you can come back from that especially when youre still lying about it. its right on the registry site...

Yes. The sad part is they are innocent people Timmy, Loraine, and Ray. They only know what they were born into. A lot of people with mental disabilities in rural areas used to be hidden away from others. Hidden in basements and never allowed access to the outside world. Mark became a part of thier world. I would love to have seen the money go to them specifically. To be helped and in better living conditions but I know removing them from thier family may also be traumatizing.

If anybody could report Lorraine, Timmy and Ray’s situation to adult protective services, I just know they’d step in. They deserve better.
Thank you for giving Jason a chance. He has a chance and you helped him. But after Jason, unless it has to do with getting Lorraine, Ray, and Timmy into some form of assisted living provided by the government, please don’t help them anymore. Betty, Larry and the rest of them blew it.

In his last interview he did mention his involvement with an underage girl in his hometown of Crystal Lake, Illinois however he tries to downplay it by making the victim a couple years older and himself a couple years older. He said that he was 20 and she was 14 (still highly illegal ofc) at the time of the offense when in reality he was 22 and she was UNDER THE AGE of 13. Yeah I donated to them also and I never have done anything like that before but I felt truly sorry for them and wanted to help. It is what it is I guess. It's sad how some people are so selfish and addicted they'll totally ruin all chances of their whole family being lifted up out of the swamp they're in. Even at my lowest in life when I was an addict myself I'd never done what she's doing. It's not just the drugs it's the soul of the person using them. Not all addicts steal or lie to get what they need. That's a big misconception.
You donated because you wanted to help, that's the good in you. What they chose to do with the money (and lied to get it so they could) is on them. A few of them ruined a big opportunity to better the whole family in that area.

You can tell Jason has really gotten to trust you. In his earlier videos he was always to himself, not wanting to trust anyone, kinda tough and rude, but now i have come to really like Jason, i hope he gets clean and spends his time with his kids again ❤

I live only three and a half hours from the Whittaker's i feel so bad for ray timmy and loraine even betty i can relate to betty i got married had a daughter and stayed home never finished school no prom no career never learned how to drive just staying home taking care of my child and my disabled husband and our two grand daughters i love watching videos of the Whittaker's

The reality is that a person seeking drugs or a person not seeking drugs will be living in a place where they can get drugs no matter where they go. It's not a geographical problem.
Let's put on our thinking cap for a moment. Jason says he moved to the area because his mother requested. He's been living there since 2008. His mother died two years ago. He says he does odd jobs to make money, and he uses that money to buy drugs when he can earn it, says he doesn't rob people. Why is he on drugs? Drugs always cost money. Always. Did the change in geography cause him to start doing drugs. Was he doing drugs in prison? Doing drugs in prison is quite common.
Mark wants to paint him as being different from the rest of the people there, so Jason is going along with it. Drug addicts always tell people what they want to hear if it will get them something.

I'm from an area with a very high unemployment rate and lots of people on drugs. It's the same mindset- hopelessness. People don't see a future for themselves. The mines closed in Southern Illinois long ago but much like WV, people are still waiting for them to magically open and for the good old days to commence. No one ever seemed to listen to the stories of miners working 12+ hour days, dying of black lung or from a cave in.
This wasn't a follow-up on Jason. This was an opportunity for Mark to grill Jason about any info he could squeeze out of him about the Whitakers.
Mark, I have watched most if not all of your videos and while I agree that WV is economically depressed compared to a lot of the country, I would love to see you interview a family that isn’t caught up with drugs. There are plenty of well paying jobs here if you are reliable and can pass a drug test. We aren’t all on drugs and living off public assistance. The opportunities are here if you look for them… a good job doesn’t find you. I like all your videos and I realize you basically have a lane that you stay in. It would be nice to see a typical working family and how happy and intelligent that most of our population is. It’s sad to see that most of the help you have brought to this family has been wasted. You been here enough to know that most people here are friendly and generous. Thanks for trying to help these folks but some people can’t be helped. I think you are genuine in your attempts. Mark please understand it is the culture and the fact they r kinfolk. My sister married a man from West Virginia and to be honest I saw much of the same behavior among him and his family. He even has kids with his cousin as does his brother and sisters have kids by same man. He bounced around between my sister and his cousin. Sadly he passed away a couple of yrs ago from fentanyl overdose after once again leaving my sister and heading back to WV. I will keep this fellow in my prayers as well as BJ, because I don't think they understand the real danger of drug use nowadays.
He Hasn't seen his children in 20 odd years , I don't like the chances of his children excepting him , he could've found a way of seeing them before now , we all like a happy ending , but if history is anything to go by ???

You are a kind and generous person I get a sense that you were trying to come to terms with the betrayal. Just be careful out there. Take good care of yourself. I think the best way to give to a community is to donate towards a scholarship for a deserving young person who needs to get the hell out of there. This family is too far gone.
⚠️ Mark, Jason admitted to be an active drug user and even with the best intentions, giving him money will be spent on it! He needs to get clean for much more than 11 days to have a level mind to establish a job and reconnect with his kids. It would be great if you could directly pay the facility if he wants the help, but cash is going to be down his throat, up his nose or in his vein!

I live in West Virginia, and he is right. We are poor here, and drugs are bad. I myself an ex addict been completely sober for 7 years no suboxone or methadone which is another huge problem that doctors and people think that's the solution is putting them on something that is even more addicting than heroin. Grandparents are raising and adopting their grandchildren due to the problem. I hate it but lost my kids when I was bad off but so happy my parents adopting them, and they are very happy and taken care of. Now that I am clean and have been I have a great relationship with my family. Kinda wish they would do an interview with him but I don't think they would want to expose the kids' situation, which I definitely understand.

@YerDaddY. meth is really cheap, and people will do anything to get drugs such as stealing or even trade stuff. Also, people's tax dollars pay for their suboxone and methadone. They get it free. That's pretty much why every addict is on it. What's worse, that stuff is way more addictive than heroin. And yes, we are poor here. It's hard to find jobs and get no help whatsoever. It's a very rural place. I live near Charleston, which is our big city but it's actually pretty small.

I love this family. I hope you will reconsider and do more interviews. Rather than give them the money just take them shopping. You shouldn't penalize all of them because of the couple of them. I don't think their intentions are to lie. An addict is very good at talking someone into helping them, especially when they are a family member.
