Your enthusiasm is infectious. Benwell lad who has lived in Scotland for 31+ years but keep coming back to your channel to see what's "Ganning" on back "Yem" 😂
Dropped my wife off there years ago. When I picked her up I said “how much did you make”? She said £50.50p. I said “who gave you 50p?”. She said “All of them !!”.
Oh my, I lived in The Forth pub back in the early 1970s. My mum and dad were Publicans there. I lived there from the age of 10 - 14 years. I remember initially, we lived on the very top floor. The middle floor was rented to some sort of photography business, and we did not get the full building until their lease ended about a year later. When we first moved in the place was so filthy we all slept for a time in the living room on the floor, we used to go to Bowers Restaurant to eat as the kitchen was none existent at that time. My parents worked hard to build up the trade and turn the business around. It was a pub with a hard reputation and lots Irish drinkers frequented the tap room bar. It is how we got our first German Shepherd in our family, for security, she used to be behind the bar during opening times and she was a good deterrent for stopping trouble. My parents started to do pub meals, once they got the middle floor and were able to create a huge kitchen space for catering. I have vivid and fond memories of my time living there. Thank you for this update. It brought back plenty of memories for me.
Another great one Eddie . I used to work on Bath lane and walked through Pink line every work day for years. Newcastle has so much to offer and Pink lane is no exception. Keep them coming mate 👌.
Living now in France, your videos bring back happy memories of my life around Newcastle back in the late 60's and erly 70's, especially around that area where we used to meet up at 'Change Is' night club most weekends..........some great memories and super videos, keep 'em coming Eddy
Class video, love a little history lesson about my home city. I’ve learned loads from that and will look at Pink Lane completely differently from now on.. thank you
Gunner House is where I did my interview to join the Royal Navy in 1974 ! My Mam is still living in Newcastle and often stay in the premiere apartments just behind Pink lane bakery at your start point ! Love your Vlogs as a exiled Geordie it's lovely to see areas of my youth keep up the good work mate
Of cause you're not getting free food Eddie 😂😂 tell ya what we just love these history videos you do , my kids keep asking " what tyneside video about this week "...they watch in their local history lesson for home educating..Please keep it up,we don't live too far away but never get the chance to visit so it's great to see the toon when you're walking around..cheers Eddie
Great video Eddie. Pink Lane's my regular route to and from St James' on a matchday and it's fascinating to learn a little bit of the history about my well trodden path. Cheers!
Interesting video, I worked for Turners Photography in pink lane house witch was just past the old post office, I think it still has Turners on the step. Turners was a large photographic retailer, professional film production and photography company. That ran until the 1990's
Gunner house around the corner used to be the Royal Navy and Royal Marines careers centre….used to have a cracking model of a navy ship in the window too
I really like your vlogs especially for the historical info. Even though I was born and lived in Shielfield and Byker I am always amazed at what I don't know about Newcastle. I left there in 1964 when I got married and went to live near Birtley and subsequently ended up in Canada in 1966. In my teenage years I remember Pink Lane and the Bigg market pubs being places that your parents didn't want you to go to, but we did anyway. My first job as an apprentice was at Robert Stephenson & Hawthorns Railway Yard on Forth Banks, a tough neighborhood. I worked there until 1959 until they closed that location down in favor of their Darlington works when I ended my apprenticeship at Marconi's in Jarrow. Do you or have you any vlogs in that area, I would love to see some. Keep up the great work from Des in Canada.
The old Thai massage parlour on Pink Lane was where my father-in-law went for his "acupuncture" sessions when he had sciatica. He couldn't get enough of the place. God knows why. 🤣🤣🤣
Nice one Eddie. Used to go to Henry's barbers for the quarter inch haircuts in the 70's. There is also a scene in the original 'Get Carter' with Michael Caine in the cafe that was near the bottom of Pink Lane.
Pink Lane bakery - best bakery I've ever been to, steak and ale pie is the best pie I've ever had, maple and pecan slice and the granola are unbelievable too. Great mention👌
Pink Lane was always one of my favourite spots in Newcastle. I used to go to Prohibition when it was originally called the Jazz Cafè and owned by Keith Crombie. Really miss those days! Gotham Town was owned by the leisure company I worked for. They still own a hotel and many bars in Newcastle and other areas. Gotham Town was good fun, a little rough but not too bad. Great vid!
Great vlog i very much enjoyed it, back in 1970 i had a girlfriend from Newcastle. When i visited, her father took me to a pub that was run by Bobby Mitchell, being a Scot it was an absolute pleasure to meet the man who was a gentleman. Sadly i can't remember the name of the pub but had a great time while there.
Moved up to Newcastle at the very end of 2022 so know next to nothing about the history of it. I'd never actually been to Pink Lane (sounds like an innuendo lol) but had heard about it. It's video's like this one that are teaching me more about my new surroundings 👍
Just got back from a RN reunion weekend in the toon enjoyed all that area ,the pubs were brilliant. Could not get over the prices , I come from surrey pay twice what you do !! Great vlog 👍
Cracking Video. I would get a tour / history lesson every odd /other Saturday from the mid 80s to the early 90s off my old man. ( Pre Keegen glory years ) . Get off the train from Berwick , straight ower the road and up pink lane to the ground. Brilliant memories. Mind , I can't remember getting told about any red light districts 😊
I see Henry's barber shop is no more It was right over your shoulder where Subway is now. Famous in the 70's and 80's. They even had their own little song. Go to Henry's, Go to Henry's and get your sell a Skin(head). Been away since 1980 whole town looks so different now. Hope to be back next year to give me self the last fond farewell to the Old Girl. Thanks for what you do Eddie!
I remember walking up there in the late 70s early 80,s to get to the houghbra house wrong spelling of the place but its where you got massive drinks it was german based bar went every weekend without fail with my mates loved it and the music was amazing
Cheers Eddy, another great watch. I've got great memories of drinking many a pint in the Forth in the 80's and 90's. I'm really enjoying these in-depth looks at various areas in and around the Toon.
Nice video Eddie, very informative mate .... am a Man City fan, but i will definitely try one or two of the pubs in that lane the next time i visit Newcastle.
Used to work in Cavendish club at bottom of Grey st and when it closed at 1.00am used to pile into Bowers for food.looked very odd in dinner jacket but that was the uniform for bouncers
I worked nights in Bowers 24 hour cafe/restaurant in the 70s when I was a student. The building is now Gunner Tavern. The working ladies of Pink Lane came in for cuppas. I loved to chat with them at quiet periods, 3am onwards. They had fascinating stories to tell.
I met my wife in The Forth 30 years ago. She was wearing a blue fluffy coat. I miss the Rusty Old Tool Shop which sold...well... rusty old tools. Prohibition used to be the Jazz Cafe run by the infamous curmudgeon Keith Crombie. It got to stay open after licensing hours (which in that era was 10.30pm) by operating on a restaurant licence. When you went through the door you had to buy a pie to conform to the rules. The place was often strew with uneaten pies.
If my memory serves that Gotham town corner used to be the ArmyRecruitment Office in 60’s and early 70’s. Where I did my NAMET in 1970. Next to it on the corners was Henry’s Barbers where all the Skin Heads used to go to get shaved
I used to live right down the road from Pink Lane. Really miss the early morning walks down this way to grab a pastry at Pink Lane and a coffee ☕ a bit further down 💗
Great stuff as usual didn’t know any of that i have been down pink lane many times but knew nothing about it. Am looking forward to the history of the medieval wall etc 👍
Love these mate. You're a legend. Keep em coming. BTW, Gotham Town was alreet apart from the toilets. They were vile. I hope that's been sorted now it's Gunnars. 😂
71-78 used to run down Pink Lane after school to catch the earliest possible train to Hexham. Those cobbles were very tricky to negotiate. Much darker in those days, I have to say. Canny pubs down there nowadays.
Great video, loads of information which we as locals don’t even know. Keep em coming 😀 Gotham Town - used to be a great pub, the decor made you think that Batman would walk out at any point 😆
My dad bought the Newsagents on the corner of Bath St and Westgate Rd when the Wills factory closed on the Coast Rd. Match days were nuts with the crowds and the brewery guys were regulars.
Gotham Town was one of my haunts in my uni days (2010-2013) I was in there 3/4 nights a week, it was dark, dingy and your feet stuck to the carpet but there was never any trouble, the drinks were cheap and everyone was always good fun to be around
Great video Eddy. I remember Turner’s photography shop where my daughter had a photo session gift from the chronicle. She came 2nd in their Bonny Baby competition! in the early 80’s
Yes, Turners Photography. I got my first passport photograph picture taken there. They rented the middle floor of The Forth pub for a while back in the early 70s.
Gunner House..I had my interviews there for the Royal Marines in 1986. I passed the aptitude tests then went for another interview. I did 60 pressups but struggled with pullups coz I had a slight injury. Never made it to the Marines. Ended up a regular in the Bigg Market....beer, girls and kebabs!!
MAGPIE TAXIS used to be facing Raffertys Pub,it was the 1st Private Hire Taxi Office in Newcastle, Bob Moncur opened it.I worked there in the late 80s early 90s.Used to get some characters walking up and down. For instance I once bought a 14inch colour tv for £11.Memories eh.
Coming from the Tyne Valley, Pink Lane was always the first port of call. The Forth, when it had an outside bog, and Raffertys when it was the North British. I used to get my hair cut at Henry's, which was where Subway is now. No need for one of those anymore, same hairstyle as you now mate. Cheers, Eddy.
Hi Eddy I met you yesterday in the Grainger Market so much a pleasure to meet you sorry for disturbed your lunch made my birthday weekend still buzzing
I left Longbenton High School in May 1976 aged 16. In the September I was starting what was then North Tyneside College of FE on the Coast Road. I got a summer job in a small department store called Newlands which was on Pink Lane. I remember a record shop being directly opposite. Newlands looks as if it's the Serenity Ladies gym now. Most of Newlands customers were with The Provident or Provvy as it was known then. I used to get the mick taking out of me when family/friends found out I was working at Pink Lane. 😂
Great interesting video. I've frequented a few (but not all) of the bars down there, good to know a bit of history about the place. I did used to go Gotham Town, a really grotty place, sticky floors, the toilets were manky, but I loved it! A good trebles bar in my youth. Gunner Tavern far nicer and now I'm in my 40s more my scene haha.
Cheers Eddy . To me pink lane is somewhere I walk through so often that I divnt even take notice anymore .I did know about the space invader piece.ive always been into graffiti.im not a vandal ,but I have enjoyed graffiti and back in the olden days I may or may not have dabbled with a spray can and a fat marker and if I had ever done anything so wild dangerous and illegal 😏then it would have been a long long time ago .back when I was a youngen, back in Nam ,back in the trenches , everything was black and white and dayglow 😉 I've had a flavoured life . A jack of all trades and a master of none . Belta video eddy I enjoy the toon history 🤝
Informative and entertaining. re Space Invader, he gets everywhere. He has one in my favorite pub in Brooklyn (ex pat here) called Iona. Pink Lane, my salient memory is of the original Timeslip comic shop. As a young 80s teen this place was heaven. It still lives - in a fashion - on as Forbidden Planet. Fourth, great pub since the 80s, was always vaguely "alternative" in my day but seems to be a good mix of all sorts these days.
Late 70s we used to go to Pet Sounds which was on the next street to Pink Lane then onto the Record Box in Waterloo Street. Where Rockshots is, was that a Adult cinema in the 70s further up.
Subway used to be a Barber shop and opposite that used to be P.N.E (Project North East) Business Enterprise centre, where Locals had support and trainning to start businesses through the Princess Trust ect in the early 1990s
Could you look at doing a video on the other side of the high-level bridge as you come out? There are some beautiful buildings and business there are boutique and interesting…including a microbus pub and Welness centre. I’d like to know a bit more about the area.
I remember the Gotham pub, was always busy! Oddly a lot of Goth's. Used to drink further up Pink Lane as well occasionally, 30 years ago now. Don't remember the names of the other pubs as they appear to have all been changed and i never left sober., back in the day. 🤣
Tommy Burns wasn’t just any heavyweight boxer, he was actually the sixth heavyweight champion of the world… he also used to put on bareknuckle fights in one of the rooms above the ball. Remember my dad saying in the 1960s and 70s when the prostitutes hung out in Pink Lane, some of them used to sit in the bars, and if the saw somebody they thought was interested in doing business, they would cross their legs, and you could see the price tag they used to charge on the soles of their shoes …
It was well-known as a red light district when I was a young man. One day I was walking through Pink Lane and a very pretty, scantily clad young woman stopped me and asked me if I would like a short time for £20. I said sweetheart I haven't had £20 for a long time.
Until the early 1980's, Raffertys pub was called the North British Hotel. Used to drink in there at that time, and the Forth Hotel, which was a rough and ready bar, with a pool table at the bottom end.
Great film. We are from Dunbar but enjoy visiting Newcastle. Good to learn about your city
👊🏻👍🏻
Your enthusiasm is infectious. Benwell lad who has lived in Scotland for 31+ years but keep coming back to your channel to see what's "Ganning" on back "Yem" 😂

Dropped my wife off there years ago. When I picked her up I said “how much did you make”? She said £50.50p. I said “who gave you 50p?”. She said “All of them !!”.
Bum bum 😂
ha ha lovely stuff.
50p for bum bum. God thats cheap
Good one.

Wow! That is a lane that simultaneously oozes history and life. Great video
Excellent video Eddy.
Had my stag night in the back room of The Forth in the 80s. A much more basic pub then. Many memories revived. Thanks
Looking forward to the video about the old town wall, very interesting stuff

Plenty more on my history and culture playlist 👍🏻👊🏻

Gotham town was Bowers restaurant in the 60s and early 70s. It was open 24 hours, 364 days a year. It features in Get Carter.
Used to work in Cavendish club at bottom of Grey st and when it closed at 1.00am used to pile into Bowers for food.looked very odd in dinner jacket but that was the uniform for bouncers
I used to go to one of the first Wimpy Bars in Gunner House in 60s,70s.

Used to go after a few beers on a weekend it was on the film get carter good memories
It got very lively at times, hence bouncer on the door but it was a fun place to work!
The Clayton street chippy must of been going at least 45yrs, 😮. Great video as always. 👍

i can just picture everyone leaving drunk at the end of the night with a pie in hand, as opposed to a kebab or pizza like nowadays lol

I did used to go Gotham Town, a really grotty place, sticky floors, the toilets were manky, but I loved it! A good trebles bar in my youth. Gunner Tavern far nicer and now I'm in my 40s more my scene haha.
Prohibition is also the bar Sam fender was filmed playing the piano signing one of his unreleased songs. 😃
That was brilliant Thank you so much
So glad it’s got nothing to do with the other “pink” venues around uk 👏👏👏👏👏
Cheers Eddy. Every day is a school day even at aged 59!
Pink lane has a few canny bars, used to have some great cafes, chip shop, Mr Qs shop was spot on…..used to be around there every day on my way to work
Could you look at doing a video on the other side of the high-level bridge as you come out? There are some beautiful buildings and business there are boutique and interesting…including a microbus pub and Welness centre. I’d like to know a bit more about the area.
👍🏻
I remember the Gotham pub, was always busy! Oddly a lot of Goth's. Used to drink further up Pink Lane as well occasionally, 30 years ago now. Don't remember the names of the other pubs as they appear to have all been changed and i never left sober., back in the day. 🤣
Brilliant eddie as ive said be for we live in a beautiful part of the world with the best ppl by far lol
Used to be a bouncer at Raffertys on Pink Lane. I miss those days....
Bum bum 😂

Great video!
Until the early 1980's, Raffertys pub was called the North British Hotel. Used to drink in there at that time, and the Forth Hotel, which was a rough and ready bar, with a pool table at the bottom end.
