I've taken this trip 3 times. Every time was a lovely experience. The staff are incredible, the ship is kept clean and tidy. The food in the restaurant was a bit pricy, but had been prepared meticulously well. In some of their ships, they even had a cinema. Most of the ships have had a play area for young kids, soft play and so on. Which is great for families. Trip usually takes about 18 hours ? The waves are calm during they day time, but can be a bit more choppy at night. I recommend people who get sea sickness to have some medicine prepared beforehand. The views of the land as you leave, and other boats at night are great too.
Did this last year but got single journeys, stopping in Amsterdam for a few nights, the 4 hours just isn't long enough. The food & service on the boat, like you say is fantastic. In Amsterdam I recommend the Body Worlds exhibition for some fascinating human body dissections. I do wish they'd bring back the Norway service like they had in the 90s
Did this 20 years ago definitely gonna have to give this a go again mate, gonna drag wor lass up from Cheshire, can kids get in the night club ? Or better off leaving them at Hyem, 16, and 18 years old?
I flew to Amsterdam about 30 years ago, had 3 nights. It was one of the best times of my life. Since then I didn't want to go back incase I tarnished the memories. After watching this I think I will be going back by Sea, from the Tyne. Thanks great video 🖖
Did the ferry for the first time myself last year to see a Dutch progressive heavy metal band in Tilburg. Its an incredible, relaxing, easy experience. I'm autistic myself and sometimes travel can be a big stresser for me personally but wow I loved the time over there in the Netherlands, everyone's so friendly so much so I've got two trips planned next year to see bands again over there.
I took this trip from Amsterdam to Newcastle in 2018. A lovely journey and a wonderful ferry. I miss the old ferry service between Newcastle and Bergen, had that trip and few times back in 90s. That service may return in 2026. Anyway, nice to see a bit different video 😊
We did this with our daughter last month although we stayed in Amsterdam for a few days. Absolutely brilliant trip and was so good we're doing it all again next year!
We've done DFDS once or twice a year for a long long time now and I genuinely don't have a single complaint about any of the trips. Fantastic value for money for the price of a night out
Looks amazing. I used to live in the North East and really nice to see what is going on in the area and to hear the native accent. Keep doing what you are doing. Glad you had such a fulfilling journey and could share it.
Hi Eddie, nice vid, when i lived in Hull we did the P&O mini cruise to Brugge and yeah it was spot on, when we boarded i went and seen the purser and upgraded our cabin to a commodore class for £50 extra it was well worth it, food was VERY good aswell and we had a canny time on board, i figured 4 hours wasn't enough in Brugge so extended our stay to 3 days with a rather nice and helpful hotel right in the centre, as an ex squaddie i knew Ypres was only a short train ride away so took the opportunity to visit and stay for the Last Post which was very moving. Personally i think these mini cruises are brilliant and was looking at sailing from the Tyne to Amsterdam myself , this video has confirmed i will be booking :) cheers Eddie.
Yes please..would love to see you+ Helen mooching round Amsterdam in few weeks. Great content in this video...very informative...and love your style--humble+ honest x
Done this journey a few times would always recommend getting the ferry over flying the atmosphere on board is amazing can also get off at Percy main metro and walk from there 😊
Loving the video so far, I alway love seeing the King and the Princess leave the Tyne and always wonder what is is like for those on board 😄 Thanks for this video! 👍
Booked myself and my bike on the ferry this Summer and had a great experience, the staff were helpful and the ship was really clean and my cabin was fine. Spent about 9 days cycletouring The Netherlands and Belgium. But it wasn't cheap, £ 400 and that was an early bird deal in February.
The bar was more like a nightclub when I visited! It's great to do but you need longer than a few hours in Amsterdam! Great video & yes Filipinos are lovely people 😀
Great video. Been thinking of doing that trip for years. Will look into it again. Look forward to the video of a few nights in Amsterdam as 4hrs would be a pain.
Have fond memories over three decades ago when you could do mini cruises from Harwich. We did both trips to Esbjerg Norway and Bremen Germany a few times. Food was great then too.
Great video. I've sailed this route many times over the years, including the current ships a few times each. It's my favourite crossing to the Netherlands, even though I live in the Midlands 😂. When you consider the current ships are heading towards 40 years old, it shows just how well DFDS has looked after them and invested in them.
I took this in 2017, while traveling to Newcastle from Singapore to attend a match (NUFC Fan) I was the only Asian on the cruise with the staff 😊 Good to know the cruise is still so clean after so many years
We took the ferry last year as a family of four. It was great and the food is fantastic as you say. I was surprised by the number of oil rigs we passed after dark with all their lights across the sea.
I travelled on that ferry in the summer when I took my motorcycle to Europe; the ferry was first class and you’re right about the food… brilliant. Love the Vlogs keep up the good work mate
Never went to Amsterdam, but went to Hamburg years ago from Newcastle. That was a nice trip - its about 4 hours down the River Elbe once you reach the German coast, so the last bit of the ferry is like a sightseeing trip. Yes, some Amsterdam mooching would be appreciated! Hope you have a good trip next time you go.
Great video. My wife and I have travelled to England during 30 years 3 or 4 times a year but never took this ferry. We choose for Hook of Holland-Harwich or Calais Dover or in the old days the Hoverspeed. Not to forget Zeebrugge to Sheerness.
Cracking video Eddie. It would be interesting to explore old trade links from Newcastle to mainland Europe. Seeing as you like travelling, it could be a good excuse to visit similar cities and cultures! I think there used to be a ferry to Göteborg, Sweden or maybe it was just a trade route, anyway, at least I few people I've met from there noted an affinity with Newcastle...
Thank you for making this video. I'm actually doing the same journey myself to see my father. The information you have provided is very helpful. Until watching this video i had no idea what to expect. Thank you 🙏
Me and a few mates do that "cruise" every second year since 2005 (odd years) but we stay in North East Holland for 3 nights having a great time with a few Dutch mates who visit us every other year (even years). The whole service and experience on the ferry is excellent. We've never had any problems in all those years. Only down side was the sharp price increases on board in 2009 when the company decided to increase profits. We've had everything from flat calm crossings, to one particular crossing that was very rough, and quite uncomfortable.
Takes me back...Used to travel on that route regularly when I was posted in Germany for 11 years. Always good deals to be had and, as you say, the food is excellent. When I was younger I used to book a bunk in a shared cabin just for the lottery of seeing up what characters you'd end up with! .
I completely agree the food is amazing, the staff are amazing too! I love everything about this cruise and for the price 😱 we do it about 3-4 time a year. Can’t fault it ❤ thanks for posting eddie
@ we are doing Xmas for the first time…looking forward to a festive ship! Hope it’s not too rough!! We have never had a bad crossing so have been lucky at any time of year
@@TynesideLife forgot to mention, if u are looking for things to do then I would really recommend the Ajax stadium tour…we loved it! Just a few metro stops from central station so so easy to get to
A few years ago I did the New Year mini cruise and it was all inclusive with a Gala dinner on New Years Eve whilst on our way back to Newcastle. I can't remember how much it cost but it was good value.
I did that run with a mate on motorbikes in 2013. Wow, it has improved a whole lot. i remember the evening meal being massively expensive, so we 'tanked up' in the Brewers Fayre right next to the port. The breakfast before we docked in Imjuden was AWFUL, but I can't function without brekky. On the return leg we stopped at a greasy spoon on the A69 and got a FANTASTIC breakfast. You got a far better package than we did. For the Jockanese, it's a better run than hours and hours on motorways. Great video, would have loved to have seen those moves on the dance floor.
We did our first trip this year at Easter, beautiful place. We went to the tulip festival at keukenhoff, very busy on Easter Monday but lush. Stayed at a centre oarcs for 1/3rd thr cost of UK version. Did their big theme park at efteling. Did the windmills at kinderdijk. Lovely place, lovely people.
Ave done the ferry to the dam twice now best going in roughly march time can get it for 40pp couldn’t even do a nite out on that let alone be in a diff country wouldn’t recommend it tho for people going for first time as you really don’t get that long but when u have been loads of times and know what coffee shops to go too then it’s ideal for a wee get away a will deffo do it again at some point
This is how we go to Australia. Ferry to Ijmuiden, bus to Amsterdam, train to Schipol. The upgrade can be well worth it, except that you have to empty the mini bar and breakfast is worth the price of the upgrade. Great video. So well filmed and put together!
Hi, sorry to butt into your comment, my sister lives in Australia so I’m just wondering why you don’t fly from Newcastle airport rather than do it this way? Cheers.
@ hi Clare. There are a few reasons. Sometimes it’s cheaper but also, travelling isn’t always about getting to a destination. It’s about the journey too 👍🏻
hope you managed to sleep on the ferry ok eddie, i didnt when the wife and i went a few years back, due to the couple next door shagging most of the night!! it was really busy on the trip going out when i went too, with most people there for the overnight trip, with a few hours in the city, but we stayed in amsterdam for 2 nights and thoroughly enjoyed it! the boat was a lot quieter coming back too, as the party goers had already come back the previous night!
What is also interesting to know, is there are dog friendly cabins you can book used if you want to take your dogs with you. I live in Holland, about 15 minutes from the Ferry terminal and bought a working cocker spaniel in Blyth and brought it to Holland once it had all the jabs and was 15 weeks old
Always travel that route with my touring bicycle, great ship , great food , summer time its rocking , especially if you get hen parties traveling to Amsterdam !
Ofter thought about going, but I was always under the impression that it was a bit trashy on the ferry. This shows that it's clearly not, so I'm definitely going to go. Thanks Eddie 👍
My wife and I are heading back to the UK for a few days after Christmas ... Driving from Berlin to Newcastle and cutting out all the tedious "south" of the UK this ferry is a no - brainer. We use it approx once or twice a year :) In the past we have done the Hull Rotterdam ferry and once we did the tunnel as we were heading into France. When we moved to Berlin, we even took our cats in the cabin with us (at special request with DFDS).
I loved going to amsterdam on the ferry but i felt by the time i settled in amsterdam and felt comfortable in the cafes it was time to go back to the boat think we got around 5 hours in Amsterdam will deffo be going back but would recommend staying a few nights
Did this trip about 20 years ago. Booked the meal but was seasick all the way there and didn't eat a thing. My appetite came back for the return trip though after spending some time in Amsterdams cafes.😵💫
There's a ferry port here in Plymouth that regularly sails to France and Spain that has mini cruises similar to the one you went on that I've always been tempted to try so maybe I will after watching how much fun you had on your video.
Hi Eddy my wife and i did the mini cruise a few years ago and we were not disappointed. Like you said everything was great, we hope to do it again soon. All the best.
Having travelled this way 12 times in 4 years I highly recommend asking for an upgrade on your cabin once on board. This time we went all out and spent €130 to upgrade to commodore deluxe but that gave us access to the private lounge with free snacks, wine, beer coffee etc. 😊 although with the dinner buffet we really didnt need much. The DFDS staff are just great too. Lovely vid
One of my Dutch friends I knew when I lived in Manchester used to get the boat from the Netherlands to Newcastle because he was terrified of flying, not because he was a boat aficionado!
This is such a great video. Thanks for making it. I watch your vids as a fellow Geordie who moved to Ireland 23 years ago. I found your channel a few months ago and am hooked as I love seeing the Toon again and your accent is brilliant mate. Great work Keep it up. 👍 Cheers
Having just done this it’s a big thumbs up from me… Everything was great…Thank you DFDS…. It’s like a cruise ship without all of the annoying cash making traps… I’ll be booking for a winter trip for sure👍🇬🇧
Done this return trip twice as my partner is German and we moved to the North East from Kent last year. We will always use this to get to Germany now. I like the drive through the Netherlands and especially Germany. We went in October and the trip out was very rough. Made sure we had some tablets for the return. Beats the Eurotunnel and driving up through France and Belgium. Great video. Glad RUclips put it in my recommendations. Subscribed.
Great video 👍 Worked in Holland 🇳🇱 22 years ago and used ferry ⛴️ a lot. Next to the train station in Holland, you have VVV is the tourist information. The train system is very good 👍
As per all comments below Eddie, class video and a glad you enjoyed it. I have frequented this trip many times and always find something else to do and visit. The Zoo is a personal favourite. The Commodore class cabins are amazing if you're wanting to treat your missus, also, food in Amsterdam, i would highly recommend Cafe De Klos if you like your meat and steaks..
Sounds like you had a great experience travelling to Amsterdam by ferry! I'm really looking forward to hearing about your next trip there with Helen. I did something similar when visiting Amsterdam myself a couple of years ago, albeit taking a different sea route (Harwich-Hoek van Holland). Really blown away by the experience and the crew were also predominantly Filipino!
Hello Eddy, your video is great. We meet each other on the ship. (I'm Carsten 🇩🇪) And, yes the Meal was absolutely amazing. Nobody will leave hungry out there. In the beginning at the Harbour my wife and I are for an Second in your film 😊 On 5th of December I'll be next time on the boat to Newcastle (mini cruise) I'm loving it.
@TynesideLife Always dfds. Or p&o They've got very often Special offer with 50% discount on the cabin. The meal is always expensive. But I will have the breakfast in England so most I just book the cabin, the bus and one dinner. To Hull on P&O I never book meal's. In my opinion they are not worth it. (Sorry for my English, I try my best)
On 6.12 I'll be in Newcastle again. If we meeting us, I'd like to explain how to book a bargain. Or do you know how I can give you my email address that just you could read it.
I've been on the DFDS ferry to Bergen twice. The first time I lost my wallet in the taxi on the way to North Shields and spent 3 days in a room on the ferry eating Wotsits. The sea was that bad they warned us not to go on deck and it was £7 a pint in the bar. The second time the Mother in Law joined us along with our 3 kids all under 6. I felt like chucking myself overboard after a day. And the Fjords were shite.
Great vid as ever, we used it last year, then hired a car and did a 10 day drive around Netherlands and Germany. Car hire was about 1/4 mile from where the bus drops you off. Advantage over flying was we could take absolutely anything in our luggage!!
Problem with the ferry is at £200 return it's just not worth it, you can literally fly Easyjet or KLM direct from Newcastle and if you book far enough in advance it's much cheaper and you're in Amsterdam in about 1 hour. Edit: I checked prices for a flight next week....£88 return with Easyjet.
The video gives an insight as to what to expect on a mini cruise to Amsterdam. The package I opted for is not the only package and there are other ways to travel cheaper on this cruise, as discussed in the video. If my partner travelled too, there would have only been a slight increase in total price as I was occupying a double cabin. One also has the option to stay in Amsterdam for an extended stay using the same process. I’m flying to Amsterdam with my partner next month for a three night stay, which is why I did the quick turnaround (mentioned in the video). I’m flying with EasyJet. Thanks for watching 👍🏻
great video I would love to try this journey, maybe you could show some lovely hotels to stay in next time you go, I've always wanted to visit the tulip fields,
Company I work for has an office in Amsterdam and I visited for a client meeting beautiful city, I visited on the ferry about 15 year ago, definitely worth another trip it seems thanks for sharing!
Me 'n wor Lass is gannin' nixt munth... Thank you for this excellent video, very helpful. We are looking forward to it even more now. (From an 'expat' who misses the 'craic)😊'

Oo I was so travel sick I never tasted anything 😱
They UK gov & powers that be want war with Russia, have NATO partnership with Norway but will not allow cheap sea travel to visit Scandinavia hmmm 🤔
I flew to Amsterdam about 30 years ago, had 3 nights. It was one of the best times of my life. Since then I didn't want to go back incase I tarnished the memories. After watching this I think I will be going back by Sea, from the Tyne.

Did the ferry for the first time myself last year to see a Dutch progressive heavy metal band in Tilburg. Its an incredible, relaxing, easy experience.
Would be very interested in a video of yours and Helen's trip to Amsterdam
I would like to see more of Amsterdam when you return again.

Lovely vid
Great advice ☝️👍🏻
One of my Dutch friends I knew when I lived in Manchester used to get the boat from the Netherlands to Newcastle because he was terrified of flying, not because he was a boat aficionado!
This is such a great video. Thanks for making it. I watch your vids as a fellow Geordie who moved to Ireland 23 years ago. I found your channel a few months ago and am hooked as I love seeing the Toon again and your accent is brilliant mate. Great work Keep it up. 👍 Cheers
Cheers bud ☝️👊🏻👍🏻
Having just done this it’s a big thumbs up from me… Everything was great…Thank you DFDS…. It’s like a cruise ship without all of the annoying cash making traps… I’ll be booking for a winter trip for sure👍🇬🇧
☝️👊🏻👍🏻
Done this return trip twice as my partner is German and we moved to the North East from Kent last year. We will always use this to get to Germany now. I like the drive through the Netherlands and especially Germany. We went in October and the trip out was very rough. Made sure we had some tablets for the return.
Beats the Eurotunnel and driving up through France and Belgium.
Great video. Glad RUclips put it in my recommendations.
Subscribed.
☝️👊🏻👍🏻
A friend of mine lives just outside Amsterdam so will be doing this trip shortly. Be nice to see North Shields from the boat as my dad came from there
Brave man getting off at meadow well metro, its rough round there m8. Another cracking upload 👌🏻
lol it’s really not
Bloody hell. Upgraded the service from when we took it in '99 when travelling from Germany, whilst in the forces too. Impressed.
Great video 👍 Worked in Holland 🇳🇱 22 years ago and used ferry ⛴️ a lot. Next to the train station in Holland, you have VVV is the tourist information. The train system is very good 👍
Having been on this ferry I think it’s a wonderful experience from the great city of Newcastle to the cheesy city of Amsterdam.
Excellent video as always. It looks great and I'm very surprised by everything you showed us. Definately worth a trip . Take care Eddie.
Food looks great, boat looks nice as well.
Another great video Eddy 🎉
slickest free upgrade knock-back ever 😀
😃
Defo do an Amsterdam video. I do 3 mini cruises a year, with my wife. We love them, lots of stories we've accumulated 😅 🔥
☝️👊🏻👍🏻
Sounds like you had a great experience travelling to Amsterdam by ferry! I'm really looking forward to hearing about your next trip there with Helen. I did something similar when visiting Amsterdam myself a couple of years ago, albeit taking a different sea route (Harwich-Hoek van Holland). Really blown away by the experience and the crew were also predominantly Filipino!
👊🏻👍🏻
Hello Eddy,
your video is great.
We meet each other on the ship. (I'm Carsten 🇩🇪) And, yes the Meal was absolutely amazing. Nobody will leave hungry out there. In the beginning at the Harbour my wife and I are for an Second in your film 😊
On 5th of December I'll be next time on the boat to Newcastle (mini cruise) I'm loving it.
Ahh hey Carsten, great to hear from you and meeting you on board! Loved the cruise and I can see you love it too 😃
Yes, I am loving it. Especially when it's an special offer. From 5.12 to 7.12 I pay around 80£ each includes one meal.
@@TynesideLife
@ that’s excellent! Do you book through DFDS, or do you have some tips to find cheaper deals?
@TynesideLife Always dfds. Or p&o
They've got very often Special offer with 50% discount on the cabin.
Excellent vlog Eddy. Look forward to the longer visit....cheers.
😂
It sounded ok apart from your mother in law.
Wow.
Cracking video Eddie, been wanting to do this for years but always remember it as a dirty booze cruise!
Great vid as ever, we used it last year, then hired a car and did a 10 day drive around Netherlands and Germany. Car hire was about 1/4 mile from where the bus drops you off. Advantage over flying was we could take absolutely anything in our luggage!!
👊🏻👍🏻
i have been on them loads of timeswith being a truck driver its better than driving down to dover then drive from calais to holland and beyond
Excellent video mate. I’ve subscribed.
☝️👊🏻👍🏻
Great video eddy . Good insight to travelling on the ferry ⛴️. Yes would love you to do more videos like this one . 👍
👊🏻👍🏻
@@TynesideLife One advantage is that travellers save on hotel accommodation in Amsterdam which, if you check the rates, is very expensive nowadays.
New subscriber and just wanted to say that I really enjoyed that.
All the best for you, your family and the channel for the future.
👊🏻👍🏻
great video I would love to try this journey, maybe you could show some lovely hotels to stay in next time you go, I've always wanted to visit the tulip fields,
Great video Eddy, hope you had a great time! Looks fab! Great stuff.
fantastic report looking forward to the longer version, rob
👊🏻👍🏻
Company I work for has an office in Amsterdam and I visited for a client meeting beautiful city, I visited on the ferry about 15 year ago, definitely worth another trip it seems thanks for sharing!
You should definitely do it 👍🏻
Me 'n wor Lass is gannin' nixt munth... Thank you for this excellent video, very helpful. We are looking forward to it even more now. (From an 'expat' who misses the 'craic)😊'
