Camping in DIY Instant Pop-Up Folding Origami Shelter

- Testing out the new creation on a quick overnight camping trip. I used corrugated plastic sheets and gorilla tape to build a shelter that folds down flat into a 4'x4' area at about 4 inches tall. I took it out to my favorite camping spot by the North Saskatchewan River outside of Edmonton Alberta.

Wife here: One idea that Steve mentioned to me but didn't disclose in this video was to use such a home made 'pop-up' structure as a shower shack in the summer! Just an idea for all you wonderful campers. And as always, thank you for supporting Steve.
O hay Jess
Jess H Hello BEAUTIFUL WIFE!!!!!
Great idea will look more in to this . We find it very difficult to shower the kids as we wild camp. All the best jess (wife)
@@denicejenkinsonfamilycampe2844 we bring 20oz bottled water and heat up 6 bottles in a pan of water then poke holes in the lids and squirt ourselves down and wash up. As for the shower enclosure I have a piece of 1/2 inch pex pipe that I can bend into a hulahoop and connect with a coupler. Then we just put cheap dollar store shower curtain and rings on it. Hang it from a tree and take a woods shower in privacy. We also stand on a short Pepsi crate so as not to get muddy feet.
@@niks983 thanks you will give it a go thanks for the tips 😁
With all the serious “bush crafting” videos on RUclips it’s nice to see a dude blasting a camp fire with a torch and hand sanitizer
Kai Wright a WD40 torch
I think these little hacks are more essential nowadays. Especially if shit hits the fan. I imagine a lot of people wouldn't last even though they had solutions sat in the cupboard or garage.
@37 pirate It's those first few weeks that worry me. Still a lot of people and eventually a dwindling presence of law enforcement. It becomes lord of the flies.
@37 pirate sad to say it's true. And don't expect to be helped in the UK if there ever is. The NHS is ran on a shoe string. Most are agreed they have families of their own and wouldn't turn up for work. I work at an A and E and it's filled past breaking most days. 3/4 to capacity is a rare good day. Pandemic scenario would be martial law chaos.
@@xPadge112x I wonder how martial law would work though I used to work for the Army up in Canada and there's a lot of the guys talked to just like weed show up at the base take her Farms go home and make sure our family was safe because you'd never be able to hold it

Keeps you coming? Niceeeeeeee
seeing steve's excitement sitting in his little shack makes me think he LOVED making blanket/cushion forts as a kid. i love it.
had the same thought. a empty refrigerator box works good too
I still do

Maybe that’s exactly why I like his videos? We had great forts. Tip: don’t let your kids have candles in crazy forts, the fire department knew our house.

1. I love your tent.
2. You never fail to come up with a new twist to camping. I love it.
3. I live near Atlanta. It gets dark around 5:30 pm. I was out in a short sleeved shirt in the afternoon. No snow here!
4. Have you ever thought of publishing your recipes for camping food? You have a knack for coming up with new ideas.
5. When I watch your videos, I feel I am out there with you. I like your conversational style.

Based on his camping raft video, I bought a case of those dehydrated hash browns! I've used a little bit for cooking at home, but the rest I will hang onto for camping and emergency supplies. I would never have known about those if I didn't see him cooking with that 🥔🍽️
It gets dark about the same time here in Northern MN Right around 4:20! Haha

If you need olive oil on a frozen morning, you could always pour it in the pan the previous evening, let it freeze, and thaw it out on the stove first thing. It doesn't hurt the oil at all, and saves packing two different kinds of oil.
Great idea, but not when camping in bear country.
You can also carry some coconut oil in a small plastic container. It freezes but it melts in the pan.
" I forgot my shovel but that's okay I have my snow shoes" The moment when you know this will be a awesome vlog!

When I was a child and we had time to dream, you know before we forgot how to fly. We made shelters like this and slept in them in the woods or backyard. Thank you for the memory recall.
Got wings, they just forgot how to fly, temporarily. And camping is fun, when you know what you are doing. If not, well... Let's just say it's funner.
I was convinced I could fly as a child….I used to dream about it……I was so disappointed when I woke up….. I really tried hard ……
@@BLUESBOYBENFIELD Never stop trying.
I remember camping on Dundas Island in B.C. with my grandparents. To warm our beds at night ,we took rocks from around the campfire , wrapped them in several layers of newsprint or other paper then a final wrap with some sort of clothing. It kept us warm and cozy at night, and surprisingly the stones were still a bit warm in the morning.
Great tip! Thanks
I do the same thing, but with Hot Pockets.
I’ve never found such a wonderful community of likeminded individuals than I have in these comment sections 😂😁
The shelter looks cool from the outside with the light on inside.

Anyone binge watching Steve in 2021?? I only discovered him yesterday and I’m hooked! Been watching since last night
It was fun watching him , it took me two weeks to watch most of his videos . This tent seam like his best. He might like a pop-up tent .
2022 but yes
Found this on 9/16/22.. I've been watching for three hours. It's 5:15 in the morning and I now going to try to sleep.
Found him a week ago. Binging the shit outta camping with Steve!!!!!
Found him right around the time of the bad news in August 2022, been watching a lot since.
in this day and age listening to this humble man camping and talking is a real pleasure. God job, Steve.
After watching Steve for a while I’ve realised he’ll eat pretty much anything & happily with a smile on his face.
I watch these videos because Steve’s demeanor is so calming. Some of the locations, such as this one, are really beautiful, and the cold and snow are soothing.
With the right supplies and equipment, I could spend a week beside that water . . .
@Daniel Dravot you should watch the storm beach camping epi
He has innocence almost like a child but that's a good thing.
To add to My comment a good example is Steve mentioning how ducks stay warm in ice water. Ducks feathers are coated in wax and none of the cold water gets to the ducks body, that's how it stays warml
Me: Enjoyed a video of Steve hunkering down in an excellent, home made, plastic shack.

Same here in winter, starts to go dark around 1600hrs. We have a name for that tent in the UK, its called a "Wendy House" 🤣 On a serious note, I admire and respect you tenacity to do outdoor hobbies at this time of year.

Steve pushes the envelop on how many ways are there to start a fire that is using something other than matches. :)
I've been a fan for 3 years. My favorite parts of the video is when you explore and I love to see what you cook before bed.
Steve you seem to have some knowledge and understanding (you have been boondocking for some years (yes, I watched your boondock documentary and I enjoyed)..about living frugally. I love your vids. He is the epitome of thinking outside the box. Really fun to watch.
Amazing how no matter how miserable the conditions you are always upbeat and positive! Thank you
"I gave you a chance to bail when I started the fire". Hilarious.
I teach the scouts in my troop to use hand sanitizer to start fires when the wood is damp. I don't know about the flame thrower spray can though. I'd be afraid of the flame going back into the can.
And a little hand sanitizer...burns well, lol. Pasts sauce, “c-l-a-s-s-i-c-o.” Canadian deadpan is legit great. Hunker, Steve, hunker.

That was a literal fortune by today's standards in hand sanitizer.

And a nice cupple of tip cuz i have a strange amount of experience with choroplast. If you just score the outside of the bend you can tap both sides and itl be a little more strong because you still have one side not cut. And if you have something thats bends a lot zip ties work nicely

Canvas strips with pop rivets and washers 👌
That's a really good idea, wouldnt be much to outfit it with a smaller wood stove.
I think I finally figured out why I love this channel so much. Its because you are so peaceful! Your kind and genuine character along with the sounds/scenes/quiet. It really is a serene escape from such a tense and aggressive world we are living in. Thank you so much brother for doing all of this for us 🙏
You could probably use some like Velcro to keep the tent closed when you build it instead of taping it.
Velcro and magnets are both a good idea. My first thought: add a 2 - 3 inch strip to both sides, fold inside tent, cut some slots in one side and tabs to fit, use some binder clips at top and bottom, or possibly you could just use a dozen or so of those clips, they're cheap AF & made for holding that stuff together anyways. However you do it, this is a fantastic idea.
@D PIW The Velcro and magnets are both good ideas.
Or add those giant Staples they use for mail bins
Pretty new to the channel but my wife, son and myself have watched about 15 videos in a few days. I really dig your style and my son says you and I are alot alike except you're more polite...lol.
Any you got a subscriber out of us and we really enjoy watching your stuff while we have a few step twos ourselves.
Bro. That is absolutely brilliant. It would not surprise me when you invent your own tent and survival brand. WOW STEVE! loved it, brilliant and it opened in about half a minute with a door?!?! Bro?! Sick. And that paper model!! Woooow.

He does though... Just subtly
Epic comment and equally epic reply .....! Love it ..!
Here in Hokkaido Japan, today the sunset was at 3:50pm , loved the tent shot from outside with the lights on the inside. Looks really cool!
I've watched a few of your videos now (past 2 weeks) and my favourite is the middle of the highway cos that's what I've always wanted to do (even just for a few minutes) But man, you're so cool, literally - I'm just totally calmed by the way you present these videos, your presentation style is awesome. It's like nothing can ever go wrong. And that I suppose, is testament to the fact that you know WTF you're doing! I'd like to see a tent close to a coastal cliff on a very stormy night. But if you do - stay safe cos I need my Steve Wallis hit - nothing is ever going to be the same again. I've gone and bought a hammock and tarp canopy - all cos of you really man! Wicked!
These videos are so relaxing, I love watching them before bed
I love how you help people with DIY projects! instead of spending so much money!
Hi Steve, Wayne from Tasmania here. We're just about as far south as you can go in the southern hemisphere without being in Antarctica. That means that, here in the height of summer, we can expect normal temps of 13-23 degrees C. The perfect range as far as I'm concerned. We usually get one or two heat waves a summer though, which will see maximums climb to around 28 or 29 degrees. In winter, it gets pretty cool, with a range that looks something like 4 - 10 degrees C. A few times every winter, the wind will blow in just the right direction to cause lower than usual temps, something like -3 to 8. Sunset in midsummer is quite late at around 21:15 (daylight saving, so 20:15 really), and much earlier in winter at around 17:00.
When I get out of slam, I'm going camping like this every day! Thanks Steve. You make my time go by much easier. I look forward to new videos every Thursday! 👍

I built a Coroplast camper in 2016. Of course I have to bend the walls to drive but this material is really easy to work with and useful. Here are some camping tips for your next trip this winter. 1. Use the red tuck tape. You might have to cut it every time, but this one is very sticky. 2. You should make a hole in your roof so the moisture can escape and maybe build one of those rocket type stove to warm your “tent”. 3. I found my coroplast (4 'x 12') at my local printer (they use the coroplast to make the election signs). 4. I'm assuming you keep your hand sanitizer now lol (use methyl hydrate, which is fondue alcohol instead). 5. I tried the dehydrated spaghetti. Oh wow !! easy and tasty as freshly made. 6. I freeze my eggs already cracked for camping. Your frozen egg was ready to cook. The texture of the yolk is a little different but tastes the same.

Very interesting design. I think you could try putting that board foam insulation (sold at big box home improvement stores) that comes in similar sized sheets on each piece, which would provide a great deal of insulation; maybe with a second layer of plastic inside & some real hinges/seals.
