  • Since we had all these awesome bikes in the stable what better time that to pit them head to head in a short travel 29er battle. We took all these bikes out and I rode them back to back on the same trails timing each section. The winner is us. These short travel bikes prove to be super capable and a blast to ride.

    Love my YT Izzo 29 Comp. Very fast downhill and climbs well. I have broken the rear shock lockout twist grip so the shock is permanently open. The only full suspension bike I’ve owned that lets you stand up whilst climbing, with the shock open, without losing grip on the rear wheel. Still using the Forecasters which are fast on dry surfaces but sketchy, especially in the mud. Great videos, keep them coming 🤗

    Great review!! Coincidentally I had my first ride on my Spur X01 yesterday, and it was absolutely nothing like I expected... the bike it reminds me the most of is my Canyon Torque, a 170/180 enduro/freeride machine... This bike can descend in completely mental speeds, it absolutely rips.. Can really confirm and relate to your observations and comments. Sure it will not handle rock gardens like a 170mm travel bike, and will probably get me in trouble, but on the other hand it climbs really well (which the torque really doesn’t with 4kg extra weight and all travel). Thanks!

      All three of the bikes are great and any would be a great choice. They do have different characteristics which make the experience vary. The Spur seemed to have the most confident feel but the suspension on the Ripley AF felt more supple. The Izzo felt to me like the smallest bike in the group despite having the most travel front and rear...but more playful and poppy than the others. You really cannot go wrong with any of them and cannot ignore the Izzo's great value. Thanks for watching Ben.

    thanks for doing this comparison. I just rode my ripley af last weekend at culvert and confluence and I was blown away how comfortable and capable the bike was. im running a 140mm ribbon coil and a DVO Topaz which helps. I think a shorter stem and possibly higher rise bars would help a lot on the Izzo. I've shortened the stem so far which was a huge improvement. It felt too "over the bars" and sketchy in the stock configuration. Some burlier tires would be a huge improvement on some of the rougher trails as well, definitely not up to the task for my riding area. Great vid.

Took it on a good 13 miler today with a little bit of everything minus super steeps. I think the more chunky and rocky the climb, the better it performs compared to other bikes I have ridden. I already ordered it and am wondering what to expect when climbing compared to a full enduro bike? Is it really that much more different when climbing? Strangely enough I'm not much of a downhiller and more of a climber so I have a feeling that I'll be right at home with the spur.

      Compared to the the Sentinel V2 which I think is a great climber for an enduro bike, the Spur is very noticeably a better climber. It is lighter, snappier at the pedals, and easier to maneuver. The Spur is an excellent climber and think you will instantly notice it coming off an enduro bike.

    I've been really considering the ibis Ripley af slx build which comes in at 4000 dollars but it has because it has better shifting performance than the nx and possibly gx but the carbon izzo is a good contender I'm not sure which to get in I where to go short travel?

    • @StraightLine_MTB
      @StraightLine_MTB  2 года назад +1

      The Izzo will be a better climber and the Ripley AF the better descender. The Ripley is in no way a bad climber but the heavier weight and wider wheel/tire combo added to drag. To me the $700 more for the SLX build isn't worth it as I would rather spend that $$ elsewhere on the bike like lighter wheels.
      The AF felt more compact that the Izzo in the seated position so that is something to think about. Not uncomfortable but noticeable. The Izzo's price is nice for sure. Can't really go wrong with either bike honestly. Ibis wins the Customer Service battle as they are pretty amazing. I'm sure YT will take care of any issue but Ibis does have dealers which makes it easier.

    Great reviews! YT just came out with a new batch of Izzos. You have the pro level build, but if you were chose between the Ibis Ripley AF or the cheapest Izzo build aka Core 2? Similar specs and I believe the weight difference would be closer

    • @StraightLine_MTB
      @StraightLine_MTB  3 года назад +1

      Thanks T D. That would be a closer comparison spec and price wise. You'd get the Carbon frame of the Izzo which will be lighter and less flex in the rear in corners. The AF has a bit better spec and Ibis support is one of the best. I think the fit of the Izzo a bit better where I thought the AF feels more compact. I think the Izzo would probably still climb faster and AF descend better. It'd be a tough decision since they are both awesome. I do like the look and weight of Izzo but Ibis service and DW link are awesome. I think I'd go with the Ripley as I prefer the DH capability over the bit better climbing of the Izzo.

      I honestly think the aluminum frame supports a bit of confidence on the downs. The carbon frames are more laterally stiff. We already had the Ripley AF and I feel it fits into the category. I think this test also shows that a $3200 aluminum bike can hang with lighter more expensive bikes. It also sets the stage a bit if/when the Ripley V5 shows up as I think that may edge out the other two both up and down. This was more of a fun comparison and less of a "scientific" one just to see how each stack up.

Also the AF is a new model with a bit more aggressive geo so it lines up better with these two. They are all bikes in the same category so it isn't a far fetched comparison.
